96 Royal - not starting

As said above, check both ends of both battery cables, and the large nuts on the Starter Solinoid. And the Cable at the Starter motor, for Corrosion. ( carefull not to twist off the Stud on the start motor ) If that don't fix it, the solinoid might be bad. Also, your battery might be shorting out internally. Check the Voltage, key off, and key on, with an external volt/ohm meter ( preferable digital ). I would also pull out the battery, check water level, and Charge it with a battery charger, ( not a trickle charger ) -
I just used a needle attachment for my greese gun, to shot the greese into the bearings. Avialable at most auto parts stores. Just remove the nuts, and washers and shoot in the greese. Also, you will need a large Torque wrench to re-install the nuts on each side. And, you will need two large Metric Sockets. On the 1st gens, the nuts are different size on each side of the bike. Sorry, you have to buy two large Sockets. Check the maint manuel, for the size, and torque settings. ( manuel is on line this web site. ) if you don't have one.

Run some Sea-Foam, and do a carb sync. Maby a new set of plugs. Might need air filters cleaned, or replaced. Also, try draining the carb bowls. Maby check the charging voltage level, make sure you have 13.8 at 2000 rpm or more.

Remember, a battery can go bad internally at any time. If its 6 mo old or 4 years old. Pull it out, and do a full charge on it, about 3 amps for about 6 to 8 hours, then let it sit for 24 hours and check the voltage, maby 48 hours. If its bad internally the voltage will drop over two days. If its bad, get a new AGM type battery !!! Talk to " Condor " !!

If you take it to a welder, remember its made of Stainless Steel. So make sure the welder knows that. -

Just curious as to why you did not stick with the Honda ST-1300 ?? I have been considering buying one of those. I have been looking at a new 2nd gen Venture, or an ST-1300. I guess the " comfort " issure is whats holding me back on the Honda.

There were two other guys that reported haveing charging problem's this year. They pulled that plug out, and visual inspection looked OK. However, a Resistance check thru the plug proved otherwise. One guy found the wires burnt off at the Crimp Point, of the Pins to the wire ends. As I recall, he had to completly rebuild the plug. Not an easy job.

starting problem
GeorgeS replied to texasrices's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Ignition Switch Failure is very common on the 2nd gen bikes. Does not seem to be a problem on the 1st gen bikes. Probably best to order a new one. Try useing some CRC Electrical contact cleaner on the switch in the interum till the new switch arrives. -
For Motorcycle, Lead/Acid type standard batteries. Make sure the fluid if above the plates !! Charge at 2 AMP rate, with a Battery Charger, for about 6 to 10 hours. Check the voltage, the next day, should be about 12.1 to 12.2 volts, No Load. Then use a Trickle charger, to maintain the charge, during Storage Periods ! If you have a lead Acid, SEALED TYPE, and the fluid is Below the top of plates, most likley its on its last leg. ( I know, these, say, that adding water is not necessary, ) However, that , Ain't always true !!!

Well, Re-Check the area where you were working, Check every plug, that might have been disturbed in the area you were working. Check all the cableing in the area, you might spot something. Check the Headlight fuse with an ohm meter. sometimes they look good, but are not ! Check the headlight filament with ohm meter, Might, be a bad bulb ?? not likley, but anything is possible. Check the Ground Wire, at the Headlight bulb, make sure its actually going to a ground. ( AT, the bulb, plug )

Turn Signal Problem
GeorgeS replied to DesertRider's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The switch for the Shift ind. is located under the rear left case cover. 5 position switch, it throws a ground, to the CMU, for the Position indicator. About only thing can go wrong with that, is the switch itself. Each contact has a seperate wire going up to the CMU. There is an In-Line Plug, between the switch and CMU. find that, and clean plug before you pull off the rear case cover. The switch can most likley be repaired with a Dab of solder on each of the contacts. Most likley you will need a new gasket for the case cover, before replaceing it. If you pull it off, another job to do , while in there is to replace the Clutch Slave Cylinder, if its never been replaced. Kill 2 birds with one stone as they say. -

1986 Royale Carburation problem?????
GeorgeS replied to ahunt2412's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Check the Intakes between the box, and top of carbs. There is a " mark " to properly position them before installing the box. Ordering new set of Clamps, both top and bottom of carbs is " highly reccomended " Be sure the rubber around the tops of intake manifolds, is not damaged. This problem is fairly common. Also be sure your Intakes and tightly bolted to the Heads. Also, maby a new set of O-Rings at that point. Some folks have reported leaks at that point even with a New set of O-Rings. Advisable to use Sealant with the new O-Rings. -
News this morning, heavy flooding around Minneapolis Mn. Any detailed reports ?? Boy, Heavy Rain, in middle of harvest season, back there. Got to be Tuff on the farmers trying to harvest the Corn Crop, middle of Sept. !!

Seattle local TV News this morning. A guy in Oregon found a Couger, had been liveing under his Back Deck. His cat had been missing, for some time. He heard the dog barking, and looked out to see the big cat trying to catch his little Chiauga Dog. Animal control finally showed up the put the big cat out of its missery. They stated that apparently it had become to " comfortable around humans "

OMG... these bikes are so touchy
GeorgeS replied to RoyalStarRider's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
General rule of thumb, for the Air box, on both 1st gen, and 2nd gen Ventures, is don't mess with them !! Just keep the air filters clean . -
Fairing Crack Question
GeorgeS replied to MPK's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
All the top panels easy to remove. Then you have good access inside the cracked area. I would use some fiber glass auto body repair on the Inside. You might have to remove the upper fairing section to do the repair. However, don't let that crack determine wether or not to buy the bike. Look into other major maintenance that has been done on the bike. Frankly, though, I would look elseware. Lots of bike avialbale now, in the " down market "- 20 replies
