  1. Have you " recently " had the rear wheel off for a tire change ??? or something. Check to see if that Thick Washer, on the right side of Axel, is installed in the correct place, or is it installed at all ??? But, also, be sure to check the rear master cylinder, for being Overfilled !!! Also, your pads might be worn down to bare metal ( well , maby )
  2. My 89 started same thing, around 25,000 miles, I re-sealed the rear case cover, several times, replaced the Brass O-Ring on the bottom, bolt, checked everything several times, and around 35,000 I just gave up on it. Its still leaks, the same at 89,000 miles as when it started !!! Best fix, is just forget about it, and go for a ride !! :whistling:
  3. Your Correct, on the hand pump at an HD , dealer. Stopped in one yesterday, they had seven of them in stock !! $49.00 plus tax !! Also, looked at all the " New Harleys " Hmmmmm ?? They actually had a lot of good deals. Some 3 and 4 year left overs !! marked down to the 12K range. A couple at $10K, and even a White Police model, an 08 I think, for $8,999.00. If anybody our there is interested, do some shopping around, there are deals to be had !!
  4. Well, the guy in Reno, said he had it in his hands, as we spoke, he even warned me that the box had been opened, and Re-Sealed. So he forwarned me as to that. Also, I believe that the price ( $82.00) is somewhat below Retail, ( not sure on that ) I gave him the numbers, and he said it will be shipped ASAP !! So, should know for sure in about 3 day's if it gets here. So your right, I'm lucky. !!! :cool10: And, I " LOVE " the new bike !!!!! :bluesbrother::bluesbrother:
  5. Turned over 500 miles on the new 08 today. So far so good, I love it !!!! Actually an eaiser bike to control than the 89.
  6. You need two different size Metric Sockets. At least for the 1st Gen. I bought two big sockets, to do the job, ( and the large torque wrench of course ) Those big sockets, cost a few bucks !!! Not cheap !!
  7. Been looking for a ""Rear Fender Luggage rack"" for my new 08 RSTD. OK, came up with nothing, but sombody on this site had posted a part number. "" STR-4NK51-20-00 "" This rack fits in place of the passenger seat, for a Solo Set Up . Also it was stated that this Yamaha Accessory has been discontinued. All True, !! I found an accessory vendor web site that listed that number , with a photo of the part, and statement that is was indeed " discontinued " OK-- SO ?? I stopped at a dealer today, and had the parts guy run the number on his computer system, and check parts warehouse's. He found, 4 of them still in Variious Dealer, Stock, around the country. One was in Reno, Nev. !! He hands me the phone, and I order it from the Dealer in Reno !!! ( Its being shipped to me as we speak !!!!! ) OK, so what ??? He also found that there are 3 more of them in stock at other dealers around the country. !!! If you want one, go to a dealer and ask the parts guy to try to locate one of them ( There are Three Left, Somplace in the U. S. on a dealer shelf ) My charge from the Reno Dealer, was $82.00 plus shipping. I'm sure there are at least 3 members would like to have one of these rear fender racks
  8. You mean you only lost " One Thingy " !!! You did good :whistling:
  9. One other tip. When re-installing the Cover, you have about 13 Bolts. Takes Some time to get the gasket in place with Sealant, and all the bolts installed, SO--- Be sure you use a Gasket Sealant, that does-- NOT--- start to set up in about 20 min. You want to use a Sealant that gives you about 45 Min. of work time. Also, be sure all the threads, on those small bolts for the cover are Clean, and I suggest running a Tap, thru the holes to make darn sure all the threads, are Clean ! Do a real good job, of cleaning the surface's and holes. The shift rod, Joint, UNder, the Aft Cover, the forward Joint, can be installed up, or down. Make sure its re installed in the correct position. ( I don't remember which now ) -- IT will go together WRONG !!!!
  10. Maby, Reset the position of the upper forks, in the Steering, head. Bye that I mean, loosen the Pinch Bolts. holding the Upper forks in place, and Tap Tap with rubber mallet to Relieve any Stress's. present. Loosen and Re-Install the front wheel Axel. Re Check the Torque Setting of the MAIN STEERING head nuts. Closely Inspect the Forks, make sure both are Set to the same Height, in the upper yoke. Be sure, both forks have the exact same amount of Oil Installed. Any signs of Fork Seal Leakage ? And, its possible that the tire itself, is defective, ??? ---- This being a Very Critical Saftey Item, Personnally I would Order a New Tire, Irregardless of what else I find as a possible cause You can't dissasemble the tire to inspect it. If you can see abnormal wear on that tire, trash it !!
  11. 2nd Gen, Sync Screws, work the same as 1st gen. ( just different size screws ) If one carb, Sync is far enough out of adjustment, that can keep that cylinder from fireing.
  12. I would suspect low fuel pressure, possibley a leaking fuel line between the output of the fuel pump, and the input point of the carbs. You said fuel usage was high, ??? hmmm, maby a leak somplace, Any Smell of gasoline while driveing ??? I would open each carb fuel , bowl drain screw, let pump run, make sure you have fuel thru all 4 carbs, Possibley a Plugged Screen in the Fuel Petcock, at the tank ??? Maby, your fuel filter is plugged !!! How long since you change the filter ???
  13. Thanks for that ! First time I pull the tank off for something, I will make up a Temp Fuel line, and add it to the tool kit. Just one more comment. after haveing the new bike for about a week, and about 150 miles, I love it !!! Handles great !!! Comfortable !!! But, lots of Whine from the Transmission, but, I'm wondering if the gear noise will drop off after a reasonably break in period. ???
  14. OK, maby a Stupid Question : But I have to throw this out there ---------- I just bought a New 2nd Gen RSTD. As to the fuel pump. Being as the fuel tank on this bike is " Above the Carbs " IF--- ( just poseing the question ) here, I run a fuel line from the Petcock, to the Carb s Fuel feed point, will " Gravity Flow " of the fuel keep the bike running ??? Or, put it this way, Is the Fuel Pump, really necessary ???? Has anybody ever tried this, simply as a method to get going out on the road, in the event that the Fuel Pump Fails ??? My thinking here, is to make up a tempory fuel line, to carry in tool kit, just in case fuel pump fails, on highway 50 going across Nevada !!!
  15. I would start with a good dose of Sea-Foam, Replace the Plugs, and Drain the Carb bowls several times. Give it a few days for the sea foam to clean the carbs. You might be due for a Carb Sync !!!
  16. Follow cable from pump. about 6 inchs, open the plug, check for 12 Volts. Check the Ignition fuse. Check the Run Stop Red Switch on rt handle bar for High resistance. Check resistance across the On off contacts of the Ignition Switch!! You might have one of the infamous failing Ignition Switches.
  17. Pull up the maintenance manuel, and see page showing carb linkage Sync Screws . ( 3 each ) Larger Straight slot heads, One on left side, and two on right side. Idle adjust screws, ( 4 each ) Bottom of Diaphram cover on each carb. Correct setting is about 1 1/2 to 2 turns open. Usually they never need to be messed with !! ------------ If you have been turning the " SYNC SCREWS " without, useing a set of Vaccume Test Gauges, as PER, the MAINENANCE MANUEL , proceedure, then, your linkage is REALLY Screwed up !! As a general rule of thumb, If a 1st GEN, has the throttle linkage " Properly Synced " then, you would NEVER rotate any of the three SYNC Screws, more the Plus or Minus, about 5 to 10 degrees of rotation !!! IF you been rotating those screws, its " Way Out of Wack !!! " :no-no-no:
  18. And after all those miles your rideing an RSTD !!!! Hmmmm, I guess I made the correct decission this week, when buying my New ! RSTD !!
  19. I could not forget all that I been thru with the 89, I love the ride, but the first 30K were , well, lots of problems !!. But it was worth it, nothing like cruzeing from Seattle to Los Angeles, on a 1st Gen !! Especially thru the Mountains, of Southern Oregon, 4 lane's of I-5 , Twisties, at 75 to 80 MPH, playing dodge em Cars, with the big Rigs !! I remember one trip, I had all 3 brake Calipers Smoking !!! going thru those mountain pass's !! Ahhhh, it was a " Good Day " as they say !!
  20. No, thats not the type rack I want. I'm removeing the Passenger seat, and want to install a Fender Rack, Over the top of rear fender. Complete SOLO, set up !!
  21. After 19 years of rideing my 89, finally decided its time to get a new bike . Not getting any younger, so decided, to get one now and most likly will last me till its time to " Hang it Up " as they say !! ( Whoever they are ? ) Anyway, as of yesterday I'm the proud new owner of a " New" 08 RSTD " ( Blue/Black ) . Purchased at Enumclaw, Wa. Yamaha. What to do with the 89 ?? Hmmmm ?? not sure, the Darn thing is still " running like a Swiss Watch " !!! OK, down to business, Modifications !!!! ???? --- Will be setting it up for " Solo " traveling. I'm removeing the Passenger seat, and will need a Solo, Luggage Fender Rack. Started searching last night, but not much luck ???? Anybody know who carries a Fender, Solo, Rack for the RSTD ??? I'm all ears !! And one more thing !!! Its still Cold, and Raining in Seattle this week !!!!! Also: Whats the source for that Niffty little Hand Pump, for Airing up the Shocks ??? Can't locate that information. I remember a few years ago, sombody mentioning the " Preferred " hand pump to carry on the bike And just to " Stir the Pot " After, about 30 miles on the new bike, I " Love the Handling " Very different world from rideing the 1st Gen !!! Not better, Not worse, Just different !!!!
  22. The Flashers, and brake lights are very seldom " ON " so, why bother to change them to LED. Your saveing an extremely small amount of current, so why bother with all the trouble ?? I can see replaceing the tail lights, and forward markers with LED, but, the brake lights, and Turn signals, hmmmm ??? whats the point ??
  23. Make sure battery cable bolts are tight on to the Battery. Check the RED bat cable connection on the starter motor, ( clean and re install ) Possible, failing starter solinoid, ( maby high resistance across it internally ) Remove and Clean the Grounded end of the Black Bat. cable on the engine case. -- Do a resistance check across the ON Off Contacts of the Ignition Switch, failed ignition switches are very common on these bikes !! Purge the carb bowls. each seperatly, open bowl drain, and Key On, make sure fuel runs thru each bowl. One at a time . And run some Sea Foam, might help. Remove the Plug, from the R/R Unit, and inspect the plug for any sign of burnt or damaged electrical pins.
  24. Your not supposed to worry about how much it costs to ride your bike !!!
  25. Thanks for the comments, Interesting - Outhandled the RSTD ??? Very interesting.
