  1. I read the VR tech article but it seems to have a lot missing, particularly when reinstalling. If my memory serves me correctly, although probably incompletely, there are quite a few hints or tips scattered around the thousands of threads on this forum thatt I don't recall the details and can't seem to find. There is something about: - using Locktite but was it the red stuff or the blue stuff? - what about torque on the 3 inside bolts and the 2 outside ones? - using a spray gasket remover instead of a scraper? - properly aligning the shift shaft or it won't work after getting it all together - the washer that fell out when I pulled the stator cover off? It has a lip on the inside edge and a couple of bends that would work like a compression spring. Which way should it go in? - before sealing, is it better to just pull the new wires through the case grommet in place or remove the grommet from the case first? There may be more but that is all I can think of now. Only 5 days before I want to leave for Nelson Kruzen the Kootenays. No pressure.

I have pictures and so forth to help explain what I have done to make a PGR 3'X5' flag pole to use as a mounted flag on the bike and then also removable to use at the funeral home and grave sites. I have been ask how to make these and I promised I would do a "how to" here. So I will do the best I can to explain this here. Rather simple to build, but hard to put in writing for me. So here goes; #1. I purchased a 8' long poplar 1 1/4" dowel rod from the local hardware/home store or where ever you may find them. Around $10.00 - $12.00 . You can find plenty 6' long for closet rods and curtains that are expensive to, but not long enough. You need to cut the rod to 6' 6". This length gives you enough to keep the flag from touching the ground while standing the flag line at a slight angle. The poplar are what you may find most of the time. Hardwood such as oak would probably be, or possibly be better, but the poplar does work well and is light and pretty tough. Pine would be to brittle and would most likely break when under stress, so no good. You would be surprised at the force generated at 70 mph with a 3'X5' flag flying. #2. So now you have a 6' 6" pole. Next attach a decorative type ball on what would be the top end of the wood rod. You can find these at the same hardware places and are easy to find. Around $2.00-$3.00 total. You need one with a screw attachment made in it. Mine did not have the screw and I bought one of the attaching screws with it. #3. I bought some eye lag screws. You need at least three. This explains what I am talking about. http://www.boltdepot.com/Wire_eye_lags_Zinc_plated_steel.aspx #4. Purchase your self a 3'X5' polyester American flag. The cheap ones are what I use. #5. I put an extra grommet in the flag at the center of the flag, so that it now has three. You might want to even use four of these, but three is enough. I purchased a grommet package for tarps that included the small tools. Be very careful when putting these in. Use light hammer force and quit when you have the grommet attached and cut the center material out with a utility sharp razor. #6. Attach the flag to the eye lag screws with these quick links, shown here just to give you an idea. These give you the freedom to remove the flag and place in a zip lock bag for storage in your saddle bags if you like and also to replace the flag very easily. http://fasteners.hardwarestore.com/16-63-chain-links-swivels/quick-link-134619.aspx #7. I put a screw and a washer with a rubber washer on the bottom end of my flag pole. This will protect it while standing the flag line and resting the bottom on the concrete and black top. #8. I spray painted my pole with a clear finish shellac. It worked OK with several light coats. The next one I am going to paint it on. I feel I can get a better coverage and a thicker coat than the spay on. Just remove the eye lags and paint the end ball/decorative end. Then after drying put your hardware back on. Hope this helps other PGR members and I thank you for your honorable decision to help such a great organisation. Take care and ride safe. I build Motorcycle Flag Pole Mounts to work with this pole. My main decision to do this was because of the PGR members. The best and safest way to attach the 3'X5' flag I think. You can use these on bikes and also other vehicles with a 2" receiver by using the reducer/adapter.   3. Have to replace the front speaker grill. Looking at the parts list online, besides just a nut, washer & bolt to attach the speakers, they also show a collar, a rubber grommet.   4. I am looking for the name of the grommet that holds the top lid down in the front. I call the top lid the lid that you have to remove to service the air filter, (not the air filter box lid), it is held in the back by the one phillips screw and washers. My front lid is wanting to come up as I am driving, and I think there is supposed to be a grommet that it presses into in the front, or under all the wiring. Does anyone have one for sale or send me in the right direction with a part number, or that has come up with another method to hold the top lid down? Forgive me if I am calling the top lid by the wrong name, I tried searching using a lot of different phrases and came up empty. It is an 89 Venture. This is the one I am going to fix the fuse panel on this winter. Thanks, Don
  5. I am going to put my tank back together after painting and then put on my 04 RSV. I went to put the front grommets back into the grommet hole & realized that one side is fatter. after looking at the service, user and parts manual, the pics aren't clear which side the larger end goes. Can someone tell me how to orient the larger grommet end - inside or outside of the grommet hole. I made a mental note of the orientation when removing them, but i have lost it. the mental note that is.

    Ok, who put the straw in strawberry? you don't know - well, i'll tell ya - nature did - that's right - nature. who put the freak in french fries? you don't know - well, i'll tell ya - there aint no freakin french fries. know what else no one knows - including me - which way the freakin grommts go on my gas tank. no one can take a minute and look at their 2nd gen AND TELL ME HOW THE GROMMET IS ORIENTED. do you know how frustrating it is to ask a simple question and get no responses.
  7. I'm sure it's been mentioned somewhere here many times, but when I 'searched' nothing jumped out. On my 89, I'm in the process of changing my alternator stator (and my starter drive clutch, and my rear wheel bearings and my....). I think that the last time I did it (on my 83) I sealed the leads in the grommet and the grommet in the case with RTV. Is there anything better to use, or does everybody still use RTV? Thanks, Frank
  8. The rubber grommet that the front tab on the false tank cover fits in on my '86 VR is in pretty bad shape. Anybody got any idea where I can find a new one? Every now and then the tab will back out of the grommet and I'll see the tank cover start to lift while I'm riding down the road. It causes a feeling that is somewhat less than comfortable. Thanks for the help.
  9. OK, so I'm technically challenged!! I got the Electrical Connection Taillight Conversion Kit, sounded like a good and Easy idea for the 2008 RSV.. I figured out the wiring connections, but darned if I can figure out how to get the turn signal bulb grommet out of the lollipop without tearing it up. I believe this must be removed so the wiring can follow the same path as the original wiring. Also there is no slack in the wiring even after removing the lollipop from the fender so no room to play with. If it's only a matter of pull&rip, I can get the grommet out, but I'd rather not. While I'm in there I'd like to replace that FUBAR light socket with an 1157 socket. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I've had her apart for 2 days now and I've scratched a bald spot on the 'ol noggin.
  10. Has anyone fixed the plastic pins for the side panel the push pins things that go into the rubber grommet and how did you do it?
