1. This will be another hard PGR Mission…. Every PGR Mission is hard… except for the one we did recently for a very much alive 90 year old that went for a ride on a trike. Monday I was informed that a friend of mine had passed after a sudden illness. Today they issued a Mission Notice that we were asked to complete a PGR Mission for him. This will be my second PGR Mission for a close friend. That just makes it harder, but yet more of an honor. I had the honor to baptized Harry many years ago. I was going anyways, now I get to honor him in another way. MISSION NOTICE: Harry Vandervoort enlisted in the United States Navy and spent four years defending this great country we live in. After the Navy, Harry joined the Arizona Air National Guard and spent the last 18+ years of his life in this service field. U.S. Navy Veteran Vandervoort was diagnosed a little over a month ago with a terrible illness and passed away suddenly on 3 January 2015 at 56 years of age. U.S. Navy Veteran Harry Vandervoort left behind his wife Rhonda, of 25 years and four children. The Patriot Guard has been invited and it will be a privilege to stand in honor of his service and love for this country.
2. 10/16/11 met Jim from Charlston 04 rsmv invited him to join 10/16/11 black red in Gatlinburg riding 2up 10/17/11 I think gold n black PGR banner on windshield on the dragon and again on either the Foothills Parkway or Cades Cove route.
3. I signed up for the PGR and I am still waiting for my newbie kit but I am going on my first ride Sunday to send off troops to Afgan. I hope they will be patient with me. Tom
4. Last week I participated in my first mission. It was a KIA. I knew what the PGR is about but I didn't expect to be emotionally drained afterwards. When I saw the flag drapped coffin being unloaded from the plane it almost put me on my knees. I can't imagine what the family was feeling. Since the mission was local I went to the airport for the arrival of the body, stood in the flag line at the viewing at the funeral home and rode in the funeral possession. There were over 150 motorcycles that showed up. It was an awesome display of caring. The Westboro Church posted on their web site that they were going to be at the church the day of the funeral, but they didn't show up. One of the ride captains said she hadn't seen any of the WBC people show up in about two years. They had a permit to picket at a church in Marietta, GA. The church was a small church and when they realized how many PGR riders were coming they realized they couldn't handle all of them so they moved the services to the First Baptist Church in Marietta. When the Westboro people showed up at the small church no one was there. They found out the services had been moved to the First Bapist Church so they went there but were told they didn't have a permit there and would be arrested if they didn't leave. I talked to a guy from Phenix City, Al that said he bad been on the road for 14 days going to missions. I told him I didn't expect to experience the emotional drain and he said you never get used to it. Go Patriot Guard!
5. Got the 89 loaded and ready to leave in 6 hours with the family to attend and funeral and PGR Mission for a friend. Sgt Brian Walker, Military Police , Airborne, gave his life on Mother's Day. Brian was a personal friend and was recently married to my daughter's friend Ashley. Brian and my daughter served together in Afghanistan 2009/2010. It is such an honor to be asked by the wife to serve in the PGR Escort. I hope I can at least ride straight with the blurred vision attack I am sure to have. Brian was a great man, husband, soldier and friend. RIP Sgt Walker, we'll take care of Ashley for you, I know you are pulling double guard duty from above.
6. I recently attended a meeting at the Patriots Motorcycle Club, and asked the President if I had the okay to sell and send their Patriots Supporter patches to the U.S.A. He agreed it would be great to have you wear an Australian Military veterans patch. The Patriots M/C was started by Vietnam Vets, and is a club that current service personnel, and veterans can join throughout Australia. The patch is unique and depicts all branches of the Australian Military. They do a lot of charity rides, and try to take care of veterans needs. We have a ride this Sunday, and all proceeds go to Legacy. If anyone is interested, the patch is $10, and postage paid by me. [i have Paypal] Maybe some PGR chapters might like to do a swap of patches, and I could ask Patriot members if they were interested in an exchange.
7. Thought the PGR riders would appreciate these. Cheap and $1.00 shipping is nice for these I think. You used to be able to get them with the PGR logo on them and I can not find them no where any more. These are blue. http://www.ebay.com/itm/251033570852?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_720wt_1270 Fuzzy
8. I have pictures and so forth to help explain what I have done to make a PGR 3'X5' flag pole to use as a mounted flag on the bike and then also removable to use at the funeral home and grave sites. I have been ask how to make these and I promised I would do a "how to" here. So I will do the best I can to explain this here. Rather simple to build, but hard to put in writing for me. So here goes; #1. I purchased a 8' long poplar 1 1/4" dowel rod from the local hardware/home store or where ever you may find them. Around $10.00 - $12.00 . You can find plenty 6' long for closet rods and curtains that are expensive to, but not long enough. You need to cut the rod to 6' 6". This length gives you enough to keep the flag from touching the ground while standing the flag line at a slight angle. The poplar are what you may find most of the time. Hardwood such as oak would probably be, or possibly be better, but the poplar does work well and is light and pretty tough. Pine would be to brittle and would most likely break when under stress, so no good. You would be surprised at the force generated at 70 mph with a 3'X5' flag flying. #2. So now you have a 6' 6" pole. Next attach a decorative type ball on what would be the top end of the wood rod. You can find these at the same hardware places and are easy to find. Around $2.00-$3.00 total. You need one with a screw attachment made in it. Mine did not have the screw and I bought one of the attaching screws with it. #3. I bought some eye lag screws. You need at least three. This explains what I am talking about. http://www.boltdepot.com/Wire_eye_lags_Zinc_plated_steel.aspx #4. Purchase your self a 3'X5' polyester American flag. The cheap ones are what I use. #5. I put an extra grommet in the flag at the center of the flag, so that it now has three. You might want to even use four of these, but three is enough. I purchased a grommet package for tarps that included the small tools. Be very careful when putting these in. Use light hammer force and quit when you have the grommet attached and cut the center material out with a utility sharp razor. #6. Attach the flag to the eye lag screws with these quick links, shown here just to give you an idea. These give you the freedom to remove the flag and place in a zip lock bag for storage in your saddle bags if you like and also to replace the flag very easily. http://fasteners.hardwarestore.com/16-63-chain-links-swivels/quick-link-134619.aspx #7. I put a screw and a washer with a rubber washer on the bottom end of my flag pole. This will protect it while standing the flag line and resting the bottom on the concrete and black top. #8. I spray painted my pole with a clear finish shellac. It worked OK with several light coats. The next one I am going to paint it on. I feel I can get a better coverage and a thicker coat than the spay on. Just remove the eye lags and paint the end ball/decorative end. Then after drying put your hardware back on. Hope this helps other PGR members and I thank you for your honorable decision to help such a great organisation. Take care and ride safe. Remember the PGR is not only for those that ride, but also for those that do not. There are times that we can help in the winter months and drive our cars and trucks to help to. I build Motorcycle Flag Pole Mounts to work with this pole. My main decision to do this was because of the PGR members. I hope I have helped you here with this little explanation of how to build the flag pole. Here is the link to the Motorcycle Flag Pole Mounts that I build. The best and safest way to attach the 3'X5' flag I think. You can use these on bikes and also other vehicles with a 2" receiver by using the reducer/adapter. The flag removes very easily with just one small pin and re-attaches just as easy. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showcat.php?cat=34 The 6' 6" flag pole. Needs to be 6' 6" to keep the flag from touching the ground. The decorative ball. The top ball. The hardware I used. 9. Just got back from a local PGR mission, while I was there, another PGR member walked up and introduced himself to me, and said he noticed my VR patch and asked if I rode a Venture, as he did, he is also a fairly new member here. His name is Matt, aka Doppler. He rides a very nice 89, that has only 27,000 miles on it, not even close to being broken in. Going back at 2:30 to continue the mission for the visitation. Capt. Nicholas Whitlock, USAF. Another fallen hero.

14. I just wanted to mention here that we recently had the need for the PGR out here. A 24 yr old Army Lt, Joe Theinert was killed in Afghanistan 2 weeks ago. He lived on Shelter Island, which is a really small community and very close knit...you need a ferry to get to it.. My In Laws live there and we know alot of the people there. The Town really came together and did not allow the family to do ANYTHING except some very personal things....everything got handled. Word got out that some inbred idiots who call themselves a church...(wont mention the name but you know who they are) were going to make an appearance. Well...the PGR came in with 75 bikes and made quite an impression on the community. The initial reaction of some people was to wonder what all these mean looking bikers were doing here...but once they saw them surrounding the service with their flags....they were truly touched. I think alot of people have a new view of scary bikers. God Bless The PGR
15. I know we have a few PGR members on here. Anyone else having problems with the PGR website or is it just me?
16. Check out this 10 minute trailer for an upcoming documentary about the PGR. I met these young film makers while at the memorial for the 4 murdered Lakewood Police Officers at the Tacoma Dome on 8 Dec 2009. This crew of young folks stayed with us as we stood a 10 hour Flag Line with tempertures never going above 25F. If this trailer is any indication of what the final product will be like, then it will be a documentary that will make the viewers proud and cause a tear or two. These film makers have earned my respect. silverdeer [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEeF77S9CbU]YouTube- The Patriot Guard Film[/ame]
17. is it ok to ride two up (my wife) during PGR missions? what is best way to mount the flag on a RSTD and where?
18. Went to a CMA and PGR funeral friday. The man was 84 years old. He was married before he was drafted in 1943. His wife died a year after their 11 child was born. He never remarried and raised all eleven children by himself. He had 11 children, 31 grand children, 70 great grand children, 4 great great grand children for a total of 116 descendants. Quite a MAN! tew47
19. i recently joined the PGR and was wondering what the normal dress attire is when you ride the event. when you receive an email notice of an upcoming event, do you just show up at the appointed place and time or do you notify someone? i've looked on the PGR site and didn't really find any answers. thanks to any & all who have input.
20. As I am proud to support the men and women in uniform, both here in Australia, and our allies in the U.S.A. I am now a proud member of the PGR I try to support both the Vietnam Veterans MC and the Patriots MC here in Western Australia -- so wished to support our brothers and sisters in the U.S. forces.:clap2:GOD BLESS 'EM ALL.
21. I posted this on another thread earlier but with so many PGR members on site I thought I would re-post. Saturday, Sept. 19th the Mn PGR set a record for the longest flag line to date. U.S. Army Reserve Camp Ripley located near Brainerd Mn held it's annual open house, set aside it's helmet/safety gear reg. for the day. PGR riders began to arrive. A steady stream passed thru the gate as one by one, some in groups began to assemble. All in all, 1344 riders stood tall, flags waving, to honor our men and women in uniform. Beautiful! (Any takers?) Renne PGR USAF Ret.

23. During the last couple of weeks my 2004 Venture R/S has been back firing when I slow down, especially if the motor is hot. I have been doing a lot of traveling lately for the PGR and the miles are climbing. I'm sure some of you have had this experience; is it timing, plugs, or what? Need your help. PS: Leaving out this morning for Fayetteville, NC for a PGR mission. The mufflers will pop.
24. Want to say THANK YOU to all PGR everywhere. Had a funeral for SSG Timothy David who did 6 Tours 2-Afghanistan & 4 Iraq. I never knew him personally but when I heard of 6 Tours I got into my US Army Reserve Uniform and rode Bike 2 hours to Beaverton, MI. After paying my respects and honor I shook the hands of every PGR Member I could find and thanked them for being there nearly 100 of them. Some PGR members were very well aged and some in wheel chairs and walkers with oxygen bottles and they held Flags lining the sidewalks (THEY ARE GREAT AMERICANS and I told them so). IT WAS AWSOME !!! My first Tour was Afghanistan in 2003 and Jan 2010 all expense paid trip to Iraq (have to check up on Muffin-Man). As a Soldier myself and now a Biker and soon to be PGR member I can tell you that PGR makes a Military Funeral 1,000% Better. Charlie US Army, Captain.
25. This was an email from the Washington State PGR. Just incase someone here in Washington didn't get the info: Ladies and Gentlemen of the Patriot Guard We have been invited to ride with the Brothers-in-arms and our own Former State Captain, Cowboy, to the Wall escort. The date will be July 8th 2009 Staging Area McDonald's @ the end of the 512 in Tacoma (near Eagle Leather) 10417 S Tacoma Way Tacoma, WA 98499-4648 9:30am Staging 10:00am KSU to head north The Brothers-in-Arms will be stopping @ Exit 202 for re-fueling and then proceeding to Smokey Point Rest Area (northbound I-5) to group up for the Escort. (Estimated KSU 1pm) A few things I want to go over since Neither Cullen nor I can attend. 1)While this is not a PGR mission we hope everyone will act in the high standards the PGR represents. 2)The PGR is not a MC (Motorcycle Club) but several other riders will be. Usually, MC’s ride tandem (side-by-side) because the ride next to the same guy over and over. 3)We don’t ride tandem, the PGR rides staggered. It is safer for a group of people who do not ride next to the same guy every time 4)Have fun. Respectfully, Conan PS: while this is not a PGR mission, we are finalizing an official PGR mission for a Flag Line at the opening ceremonies on Friday 7/10/09
