  1. OK, I know most folks are not to interested In AM Radio Reception on motorcycles. However: If you are, I have hit on a simple ( but cost a few bucks ) way to greatly improve AM Radio reception on the bike, and also cars. Being a Ham Radio Op, helps a little here. ( I'm also an antenna, "freek" in addition to a Motorcycle adict) Anyway, by modifying some Unused, Ham radio Antanna's I have come up with a greatly improved AM Antenna for the bike. If interested, PM me for the Details, if you are interested in an Antenna project, IF, better AM reception is of interest to you.
  2. Ditto !!
  3. In Washington, you simply notify the Dept. of Licencing immediatly upon the sale. You can do it on the internet here. Or, simply stop at the Dept of licencing office on the way to the bank to deposit your money from the sale. I have done it several times after selling a vehical, just jump in the car, and head for the DOL office, a special form on the back of the title paper that you normaly keep in the car with you.
  4. Look in the VR Tech section this website. There is a complete write up there on how to replace the Fuse Block with an ATM type Fuse block. Avialable most auto parts stores. Use TWO 6 fuse holders, this way you will have extra fuses. for adding things, and also its good idea to rewire the Fuel pump, and one tail light, and Horn, and maby a few other things, onto a seperate fuse.
  5. The turn signals, and brake light bulbs won't make much difference as they are very rarley " On ". Replaceing the Tail light bulbs with LED, will help some. If you are going to run 50 Watt running lights continously you need to Upgrade the Stator, and install a DEKA 330 CCA battery. ( AGM Dry Cell type battery ) The stock charging system is just able to keep up with the Stock Equipment, as set up OEM. I had lower wattage driveing lights on my 89 ( now sold ) but I only used them at night when the extra light was actually needed.
  6. Does anybody have an 05 to 08 RSTD Stock Solo Seat they want to sell ?? I need one to send to " Russell " for conversion to a " Russell Day Long " Thanks ( 425 466 4094 )
  7. Maby loose battery bolts. Maby corroded Negative Batt connection right front corner of crank case. Of course, check the large white plug for burnt pins. Output of the R/R Unit, open the plug and check for dirty corroded pins. Check the Fuse holder if you are still useing the OEM Fuse Block, for loose fuse . Possible Internal Failure of the Battery itself. They all fail sooner or later, how old is your battery ??? If over 3 years old its suspect. Are you still useing a lead Acid type battery ?? If so, switch over to a new Dry Cell , AGM type, they are much better. ( DEKA, 330 CCA are now the preferred type !! ) Your Main grounding point is located under the upper left side fairing, hard to get to, but 5 black wires are grounded there, if that bolt is loose, Not Good !!! This is a maby, just mention it as a possibility. Being that it was all OK before you left it parked for a week, my thinking is the Battery itself, is the most suspect item.
  8. Your report on the Inerd's of your carbs is why we All Here!!! Use "" SEA-FOAM "" Several Times, per year !!! Any new members, or lets say fairly new Venture owners take notice !!! Buy some Sea Foam on the next trip to the store, and make good use of the stuff !!! Nuff Said
  9. As I understand it, all H Dealers carry these pumps. I paid 48.95 plus tax I think. They work great, as advertised !! No chance of blowing the seals.
  10. My theory is the driver wanted to make sure the biker could not testify against him in court. Back in 1969 or 70, on a 4 lane freeway, sunday morning, almost no traffic, I was in the #3 lane. A large Caddy slowly passing me on the right, one old fellow driveing it. I glanced over at him, he looked to his left, and glared at me, then crammed his wheel left and tried to run me into the center divider !! Basicly the guy tried to kill me !!! No doubt about it What I did, was, I swerved left, across lanes, onto the shoulder ( luckly there was one ) and slammed on the brakes. I was far behind him as he crossed the #3 and #4 lanes ( where I had been ) . The guy was driveing an almost new 4 DR Caddy, and wearing a very distinguished business suit. I was about 25 at the time, I would estimate this guy was about 60 to 65 at the time. I have come to conclude over the years that there are a lot of folks out there who simply " Hate " Motorcycles !!! As to why?? Don't know :confused24:
  11. Don't fool yourself, this is not just a Harley problem. Any Motorcycle will do it !!! My 89 started the wobble around 30K. Fix is usually the torque setting on the steering yoke. My father in law, went down back in 1970 on a Honda 450 because of head wobble !!! ( there was no doubt about it !! ) If you have never taken your bike out on a straight, and level highway, and checked for " Head Shake " up to around 90 MPH, it something you should add to your yearly Schedule !!! This condition, is dangerous, and it will kill you, and it applies to ANY, Motorcycle
  12. See: this link-- http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5944 Sorry, its not a fun job. cost about $110.00 for the parts, and whatever tooling you need to buy.
  13. Did you open the drain on each carb bowl, one at a time , and KEY to ON. Let fuel pump run fuel thru each carb seperatly. ( with, good dose of sea foam of course )
  14. Well I ran an E-2 and E-3 on the 89. 1st one went 22K, the 2nd one the E-3 I pulled off and replaced at 17,300 miles, and it would have eaisly gone another 2 to 3 K !! I got about 14K from an Avon, and 15K on a Conti. on the 89. Also, I cross cut the old E-2 Caseing, after removeing it. Point here is that the caseing on the Elite Series dunlops. is 1/2 inch thick, Plus the tread depth. As compared to the D-400 Series Dunlops, the caseing is only 1/4 inch thick. Not sure on the Avons, or Metzlers, how thick the caseing is. ?? Bottom line is, I'm sold on the Elite series Dunlops!!! I'm going to try one on my Hyabusa soon. Dunlop now has a replacement for the stock Bridgestones that are used on the Busa's. Will see how that plays out.
  15. Don't worry about it !! Drive on, hit the road, head west young man !!!
  16. The new RSTD, ( well new 3 months ago ) just turned 5900 miles. I put the narrow E3 on the front yesterday, and took out for test ride. Yes!! it is better handling, then the OEM Bridgestone. Today, I installed the new Rear E3. and greesed the drive shaft, and rear spline. And yes, it does feel better with the E3 on the rear. So my point here is to confirm all the past comments I have read about changeing the OEM tires on the 2nd Gen. Handles better, and feels more like a 1st Gen Also, the Rear Bridgestone, would have been bald at about 7,000 miles, But decided to remove it today. And, Yes, there was hardley any Factory installed Greese, on the rear Drive spline, or on the drive shaft splines !!! If you have never pulled your rear drive unit, or drive shaft, be sure to do this job, and get you hands Greessy !!!
  17. Took a 60 mi. out and back ride this afternoon. Heading out I was passed in op direction by a dual sport bike ( BMW I think ) and he had some kind of a rig sticking up on his back seat, with a bicycle mounted on it. ( Rear tire sticking up above his helmet ) Ok, I'm heading back home, and near the same location the same guy passed me going the other direction. Hmmmm A Motorcycle with a Bicycle mounted on the passenger seat. ????? At this point, I'm not sure if I really saw, what I saw ??? :confused24: And, I stopped at the top of Snoqualime Pass on I-90, to make a pit stop and get something to drink. I'm standing there talking on the Ham radio to a friend in Calif. , and a nice old gentlemen pulled in with Alberta Plates. He comes over with a map and wanted to know the exact loaction ? Fine, I marked his map for him, then he says, that about 2 miles up the road his car was hit by a large rock. ( They have been blasting the Mt Side there for several years to widen I-90 ) Anyway go over to look at damage, and his Right side Rear View, Mirror is completly " GONE " . Nothing left but the gasket, and Wire connector !!! Not another Scratch on the Car !!! Mirror, completly gone!! I'm thinking a rock about the size of a baseball must have come down off the Blasting area, and hit his car. ( Road is closed during blasting of course ) Must have been a Delayed Rock Fall !! :confused24: The blasting here has been going on for about 3 years now, takeing down a good section of the Mt. Side to widen I-90. He said it sounded like a shot gun went off inside his car !!!
  18. Please Sir, replace it now, we will all feel much better about this matter
  19. If its running good now, keep a fair dose of Sea Foam in the fuel for a couple of tanks and run the engine hard !! Another item, is Screw the plug wires out of the plug caps, and Nip off 1/4 inch of wire and re-install. Also, you might want to pull the Two Electrical plugs out of the TCI, and Clean the pins with a contact cleaner. Do you know if this bike has ever been stored " Outside " for a prolonged period of time ? If so--- You might need to pull out the TCI, and remove cover and dry out any moisture inside. This is a fairly common problem. Also, check the Two Allen Head bolts that mount the Intake Manifolds to the Cylinder heads. ( they are know to come loose !! ) Any Intake Vaccume leaks are bad on these bikes. Also, check the Clamps above and below the Carbs, make sure everything is properly " Seated "
  20. I stopped at " Hinshaw Honda" , Auburn Wa. yesterday to buy a couple odds and ends. Lots of used bikes parked in front of the dealership. Anyway, they have an 09 RSV, Black, in good looking condx, price tag I think was either #8 or 9 K. I would estimate the bike had around 35K as the front tire was an Avon. ( if we assume the OEM front went about 20K. ) Also, they had a 91 Venture, All in one piece, with 44K on it, asking 3800.00. Anyway, for an RSV, Trunk, fairing and all the goodies, for the price if anybody is interested, lot better deal then 20K for a new one !!
  21. This is all part of the insidious plan to get us all switched over to rideing " public transit " I hear that California is planning to build a new Passenger Train, from Bakersfield to somplace around San Jose. I think it will be in the 8 to 10 Billion price range. I just can't wait to ride a Bus to Bakersfield, so I can ride the new train to San Jose !!!
  22. 08 Venture, I would only worry about keeping the Gas Tank , Full !!! Assumeing, of course, you have a good battery, and good tires !!! Hit the road, enjoy the ride, don't worry so much !!
  23. Look into the cost of simply " Renting One " during the time you want to spend down there. No upkeep, no storage cost, over time, maby , would be far cheaper then owning anything !! Also, if things don't work out over time, you are not locked into takeing care of something. At the present time, RV's are a Glut On the Market !!!! I once, compared the cost of " Owning a time share " as compared to simply staying in a Middle priced, hotel room. Turned out, that over about a 10 year period of time, it was far cheaper to simply book a " Hotel Room " !!!
  24. If pump is bad, fill the tank, and should run with gravity feed, well maby. Open one carb drain, turn key on, see if pump is pumping fuel thru the carb bowl and out the bowl drain line. Any chance the fuel filter is plugged ?? Also consider the Screen on the fuel petcock might be plugged, not likly though, but a possibility. How about a Kinked fuel line somplace from the petcock to the filter, to the pump etc etc Have you checkd the Fuel Tank Vent Hole ??
  25. I bought one 3 weeks ago, and installed it. It Fits, it works, and is very high quallity !. For the amount of welding skill required to build this item, and the fact that it fits perfectly, I would not consider it to be over priced. ( especially when you consider the OEM price ) Also, the sound is nearly exact same as stock. Well to my ears anyway.
