1. Last week a few friends were coming home from Sturgus, our friend waz (is) 75 on an Elec Glide just put $5k in it. They stopped for a break in Kansas and said lets pic it up a little we were doing 75-80, got up to 90 when we looked back he waz not there. Turned around went back cars were stopped around him , he was unconsince ribs broke arm all scent up from road rash. He is in the hospitial in Kas. Havent heard yet how he is doing.. Check out Google. Harley Death Wobble. Never heard of it before..
2. Amy just stopped over to give us the news. Tom is basically OK but in the hospital for a day or two. They were stopped to make a left turn and got rear ended by some younger guy doing 50mph in a 40. This happened around 7PM last night. Tom was complaining about chest pains after the accident, probably from the seat belt, but they put him in the CCU at Buffalo General Hospital. The force of the impact broke both seats and Tom literally bent the headrest brackets with his head. Amy thinks thehy will total her new car. If anybody wants to call Tom, or if you locals want to visit, he is in Room 415 and the phone number is (716) 859-6415.
3. When you've stopped at a restaurant or a gas stop/pee break .... in other words, you've left your bike unattended to go inside a building for a period of time ... 10 min - 2 hours or so.... do you lock your helmet on the helmet lock, do you store it inside the trunk, do you take it in with you, do you leave it on the seat or hanging from the mirror or something?
4. Jaybird happened to be at the Chrysler dealer doing some windshields and stopped to say Hi, guess he should have known better
5. This has probably been covered before, but I'd be darned I was able to find it during a search. Here's my problem. This just started on my 83'. I was driving down the road. Nothing special, just normal driving, when all of a sudden everything drops. Tack, engine, everything. Just like I'd hit the "kill switch". I stopped the bike and turned the key on and off, and the bike fired right up. I thought strange! But drove on down the road. Stopped to get some gas. When I turned the key to start the bike again, everything powered on...but when I hit the starter button...NOTHING!! Now keep in mind that all the lights on the dash are on. I can hear the gas pump do its thing. I checked all the fuses (yes its an old fuse box) but they were all good. I have a Delka (sp?) battery in the bike. I've installed the heavier battery cables too. New spark plugs also. Yes, I have plenty of gas. I then kept wiggling the "Kill switch" back and forth hoping that this would make a difference. (This is were I read something on the forum, but can't find the article now) Still nothing worked. I then put the kick stand up and down a few times hoing that maybe that would make a difference. Well, long story short...the bike finally turned over. I don't know exactly what worked though. So any ideas would be great! I'm a bit scared to take her out for a ride again, since I felt like I was lucky to get her home. I've since went back out to the garage and she's still starting OK. But that's a pretty scary feeling not even getting a buzz or anything. Thanks, Jack
6. Went on a road trip through the NE corner of Pennsylvania last weekend. Stopped at a place near Titioute on Route 6 called Simpler Times museum. Happened on it by chance, found the door to be locked, with a sign "open by appointment or chance". Just then an old timer (88) stopped by in his truck and opened up. He lives just out back, so if it's closed you can probably get him to open up.....he loves to tell you about the history of the stuff inside. Mostly old cars, trucks, gas pumps, drilling equipment and tractors. He'll charge you $4 to enter, and it's money well spent. He has quite a collection in the 5 or 6 buildings on site. I particularly enjoyed the two ancient Mac Trucks he has. One of them is chain drive. My peeps and I were glad we stopped. If you're in the area, check it out.....you'll be glad you did.
7. Monday... so if any of you fellow riders are in the area and would like to meet up let me know. was a great ride up we dodged the rain and it was PERFECT weather to ride, about 1/2 way up we stopped and put on a jacket and it was just right! we saw between 75 & 100 turkey's no lie & 7 deer...
8. After we hit the deer last night (See other post), as we waited for the police and tow truck, several cars went by and some of them slowed to look at the deer and our car, but none stopped. A young guy on a crotch rocket pulled over and asked if we were OK or needed any help. Doesn't surprise me a bit that a motorcyclist was the only one to stop. Had a car stopped, I would have expected the driver to also be a motorcyclist. Makes me proud of us! Andy
9. Tinkered with his bike a little. Last I saw he was riding into the sunset with a big grin on his face. Has he stopped yet???
10. Man, I had some stupidity rattling around my brain friday and saturday. I think I got it all out, but here's what I did. I wanted to adjust my brakelight to come on sooner when I hit the foot pedal. So- I looked in the pdf manual I bought and found what I thought was "brake light switch" adjustment. So I adjusted it much better. Then I left the acc switch on overnight and killed the battery. Noticed that one 2 hrs before I needed to pick up my daughter and got the charger going. No biggie- all fixed up and she started right up. Got about 4 miles down the hiway and I noticed it had no power. Then it hit me "oh shiyat I adjusted the rear brake too!" I had no tools- NEVER AGAIN! So I called my wife and she came to my rescue. BUT- there was a broken down Ultra classic a mile before me with a cop pulled up behind it. She assumed it was me and pulled in behind him. He turned and walked toward her and she says loudly "that's my husband!" LOL she said it was really embarrassing when a gal emerged from behind the cop car and gave her a look that could kill. Having recovered from the embarrasment and explaining to the cop and riders she wasn't really insane, she drove another mile and finally found me. Luckily I only cooked some pad life, but it was all good once I REadjusted it and let it cool off a half an hour alongsde the freeway. The same nice police officer stopped to see if we were ok, and we chatted bikes for awhile. He even waited with us to make sure we merged back off the shoulder ok. LOL I never accelerated away from a cop so fast legally. So all the drama completed, I picked up my 15yr old girl from her mom's for a nice country ride. We got a mile away and it started pouring rain. Since it was 92 out, that was kind of fun. It stopped, we dried out and later I pulled through an area of really really expensive houses that she likes to look at. I'm talking 4-5 million each. It pays to keep these teens motivated! Rode up a dead end street with no circle and stopped. Was gonna back into a driveway and pull away, but the Venture had other ideas, deciding it was now a good time to lie down and take a nap. Daughter did great, nimbly hopping right off and away once it was apparent the bike wanted a rest. Was impressed at the foresight Yamaha had in putting those wonderful shiny chrome bars that stopped it before it got really ugly. Anyway, emergency tipover-switch test completed, she helped me pick it up and we had a noneventful rest of the ride. My hip hates me today.
11. I have a supplier close to me that has three cyclemate trailers that appear to be new. He says he is getting out of the business and has them listed at about 400.00 off list. IF anyone is interested, let me know and I will go take pictures etc. I am not sure when they stopped being made or if they have stopped. I can not find anything but 09 info on most websites. If anyone has some more info on the trailer please post it here. I was looking for a trailer but I think he still wants too much for them. Especially if they are several years old. He has a white and a black cm2000 and then one of the more trimlined units. Not sure of that number. OK here are two pics I took of one of them.
12. Went to Port Dover this morning after midnight shift. Had bike all ready the night before BUT SNOW stopped me from ridding there.Got to Timmies and there was a Ural with side-car driving around. There was also an on-off road bike and maybe a V-star also that pulled in BUT you could tell they were from town or trailered as they were really DRY.Arrived there around 10am and left around 12pm and didn;t see any more bikes. Bought my shirts and a couple patches and left for home. Stopped in at Yamaha dealer in Delhi to look over the 2011 blue Venture they had and got a price of $18700 + tax & lic. Said they will be getting 2012 in around the 16th this month. They said it would be in same ball park for price. Kind of like the 2011 as it is blue with black lowers and 2012 is all black(one they are getting)
13. Almost, but not quite! Yesterday my wife and I were on our way back from seeing her sister who lives about a 100 miles away. We were easing along at about 60 mph on a 4 lane highway in the left lane. Traffic was moving along at a good pace when we came up to pass a slower truck in the right lane. Now get this, the road had a right curve as we were about to pass the truck. Up ahead on the right shoulder of the road was a GA State Patrol car with his blue lights flashing. About 1/4 way through this turn, the truck in the right lane all of a sudden whips into my lane with me. I shut down on the horn as I'm just behind his door and try to keep him from hitting us by moving to the outside of the lane. As I looked back ahead I suddenly realized I wasn't going to make the turn. The pavement dropped out from under me and I thought, This it going to be bad!! I hollered to my wife to hold on. I didn't know what was in the bottom of the medium so I tried to hold it as close to the highway as I could. As luck would have it , there were no washouts in that section of shoulder and I was able to get stopped without losing it. I got stopped about 2 car lengths in front of the GSP on the opposite side of the road. MY wife and I sat there and just shook for a few minutes before trying to get back onto the highway. What did the GSP do???? NOTHING!!! He just sat in his car. I figured even if he didn't see what had happened he would have come over and given me a sobriety test!! The guy in the pickup slowed down but didn't stop. My wife said that was the scaredest she had ever been as long as we've been riding!! Jennie told me later that the pickup driver never stopped coming into our lane. It always happens when you least expect it!!!! I sure am thankful it didn't turn out like it could have!! This one took our breaths away!!!
14. Leaving Milwauke today and at a large intersection I had a fall. The intersection had two left turning lanes, three straight through lanes and a right turn lane. As I approached the intersection turning left with an advanced turn the light turned yellow. I was not going fast as I was not familiar with the road and I slowed right down as the light changed. I looked back to see if Rhonda was would be okay and she stopped thank goodness. As I looked forward a car jumped the green and was right there so I hit the brakes and went down on the left side, and fell off the bike. The bike rolled/flipped to the right side and stopped. The guy who jumped the green before I could get all the way through the intersection and appearantly swerved away from me but never stopped. An older gentleman who turned right behind chased the car for a mile and then told the kid he caused an accident and he just drove away. The older fellow got his license and gave it to me. Three other people stopped to help and said they saw it and gave me there numbers. The police said nothing they can do as there was no accident as he went through a green but also stated he should have waited till I cleared the intersection. I have bruise on my knee and one on my elbow, no real road rash but a small tear in good blue jeans. The four crash bars did there job scraped but the front two bent backwards and broke the tabs in the centre of both lower fairings. That is all the damage that I can see People and the police were very nice and helpful. Two different officers showed up as they were not sure whos jurisdiction it was. The one officer was very concerned and very considerate to Rhonda feelings as she was obviously very shaken watching the whole thing. Obviously we were both very lucky as it could have been much worse, so all is good. Brad
15. I Stopped being lazy! Tell me what you think!
16. My RSTD has an odor of gasoline almost all of the time. I do not see any leaks at all. It runs perfect. Is there a vent tube or something I should check? When moving it isn't noticable at all, but at traffic lights stopped or even sitting in my garage with the fuel cock closed, it is still a pretty strong gas odor. Ideas?
17. Hello Everyone: Wayde 67mini67 from Washington State made good on his promise to stop here in the Panhandle of Nebraska on his way to Freebirds. I joined Wayde and rode with him for another hour. Stopped in Alliance and had lunch. Sun was still out when he left, but I ran into rain on the return trip home. Nice to meet another member in person. Safe travels....Mark
18. I've been off work this week burning last of my vacation time for the year. As it's been a dreary week, cloudy and raining most the time I've spent a lot of time in the garage working on little things on the bike. Last of all a new set of pads all the way around. I'll post a couple of pics on that story later. LOL! Got my moneys worth out of the last set for sure. But I figured it was NOT raining today so a trip out to check the bike and seat the new pads would be a good thing. Almost ended up poorly. I rode for a few hours and stopped by my store to pickup my security keys for Monday. Stopped and BS'd for a while with some co-workers and they followed me outside when I was leaving to look at the bike. As we talked I was gearing up, armored jacket, leather gloves and the full face helmet and they were giving me static about all the gear, as usual. I just laughed it off and said "Parking lots are the most dangerous place for a biker." Not all that far off really ya know. I had just pulled away from them and as I turned into a lane through the lot I saw two sets of brake lights light up in two cars across from each other and as quick as the lights came on the backup lights lit up also. I hit the brakes and stopped as fast as I could. (YEA!! New pads!) Both cars shot out of their parking spots and met with a pretty good impact that crushed both rear quarters, folded the bumpers and sent pieces of taillight flying everywhere......all about 3 feet in front of where I sat. WoW! Cool! My co-workers came running over as I put down the side stand a waited for the cars to decide what they were going to do. All I could do was laugh and say, "See, what did I just tell ya!" Both drivers left their cars where they were and got out. A couple of Blue Hairs. You know... the ones that do 15 mph under the limit in a 25 mph zone. They had more speed backwards than they do going forward. They decided to exchange info before moving the cars out of the way. Now they are moving at the speed of mud as they do this. I'm just shaking my head and laughing. So the Cager Club Sandwich ..... Hold the Yamaha, makes sense now right? So where does the "Dip" come in? That would the three cars that pulled into the lane behind me, RIGHT behind me a felt the need to sit there and lay on the horns. Dips would be a nice term for them. I had a couple of other names for them but nobody would want that with a sandwich. I'm not a lil fella at 6'3" and dressed in full gear. I pulled my helmet off and walked back to each car and made my statment, "Ya'll back your a$$ up and go on your way. NOW!!" That worked, I love that Bambi in the headlights look, I really do. Some people say I have a nice smile. My daughter says it looks like I'm showing my teeth. Well, whatever, the effect works. LOL! So the lil old Blue Hairs both came over and asked me if I saw what happened. They both were fishing for a witness. "Yep, I did. And if either one of you contact me to be a witness I will gladly come to court and be a witness for the OTHER driver. You both screwed up!" So that sort of set the whole thing off and I was starting to see a remake of the famous Star Wars lightsaber fight with a couple of Yoda Blue Hairs and canes. Eww! So I rolled back and made my way out of the lot. Slowly. Safely. Back to the safe harbour of my garage. Ahh, Home. So folks, keep your eyes moving in the parking lots ok. Things happen fast in very little space. A few more feet and at best, I would have been rebuilding my front forks ....again. Ya see that Earl!!! Won't be needing anymore parts for a while! Ya'll ride safe, Mike
19. What type of windscreen is on this 1st gen? It's enormous- I want one! I much prefer very little wind buffeting. There's always plenty of airflow, even on hot days. 20. In lifes trials we walk thiunking we are the only ones with all these problems. I am one of those peaple anyways. Today I was humbled. My phone rang at 5 pm this afternoon and it was my wife. Weird time for her to call as it was when she was on her way to school. Kneedless to say this is when I was humbled to understand that all these things I thought were so important are really nothing. She was calling to ask me to come and get her as she had just hydroplained in her explorer. Shes not sure how many times she turned around in the road , but it was at least 1 1/2 times before she ended up turning around backwards in traffic at highway speeds. As best I can tell she was on 2 wheels and going over when the concrete barrier put her back on all four and stopped the explorer. As I siad shes safe so all the other worries are now in perspective. Laura has a little bump on her head and a head ache so Ill be watching her tonight for anything weird but she was able to walk away. The officer that arrived on scene stayed with her till I was able to get to her and I was a little over an hour away.Thank you sir as that was nice of you. My deepest thanks goes out to a Mister Steve smith. A good symeritan who not only stopped to check on her but used his personal cell to call me since Laura couldnt find hers. Sir I know you dont know me and probably will never read this but I cant explain what that means to me. Any ways thanks for letting me get this out as it all gains a little perspective as if the truck would have turned over who knows I mught not have the love of my life with me now. David
21. Loaded up and ready to roll south http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Ride%20to%20Kissimmee/100_0214.jpg Some late entries for the "big stuff" scavenger hunt... 22. I was out running my VR83 and stopped for ice cream,When I came out I noticed an oil leak under my bike.My bike never leaked anything.I did not think about it untill I got home.As soon as I turned it off,oil poured out from the middle of the kick stand area.It stopped after a few secs.I started it and it did not leak at all.Turned it off and leaked repeated its self.I have not investigated yet.Does anyone have any ideas where I should be looking? Thanks all....Ray:confused:
23. my wife & i were coming home from a beautiful ride on the Blue Ridge last Saturday. after we stopped for a late lunch, my wife wanted to go into one of her favorite department stores.....as i waited outside a man and his wife stopped to talk to me about my RSTD.....said he used to own a '97 TD and what a great bike it was..... he said i could get a set of 'front' turn signals from an '04 and earlier RSTD and mount them on the rear in place of the original turn signals...which would provide a running light as well as a turn signal .....he said the older fronts lights had an 1157 bulb and that i would need to tap into the red wire to make the running light portion work...has anyone done this mod??
24. Sorry friends for what I have to say, but coming home tonight I stumble unto an accident. I've seen my fair share of horrific accidents, but when it comes to children, it is hard to grasp. It had been raining with a some water standing on the roads. Just as I was coming in front of the main gate here at Camp Lejuene, a lady whom witnessed an accident was on the outside side of the road. Trees in the medium that were planted years ago in remembrance of the Marines lost in Beirut. In them trees was a ford P/U twisted among one of them with a man wondering beside. No other traffic stopped to help, so as I passed, slowed down, stopped and backed up and applied my 4-ways. Lady came to me to let me know 911 was called and was in fear as she was by herself other than her small child in her car that she could not leave unattended. I approached the man, he was in near shock. I asked if he was OK, and I he could say was."Where is my baby?" We were within 10" of his truck and I glanced over towards the truck. I wished I hadn't............. I knew there was nothing I could do for the 5 year old child. I will not go into what I seen , but it I tell you is one of the most heart breaking thing that one will endure is seeing a child in the manner that I had seen. All I knew now was to keep the father from going further into shock by talking with him , asking him simple questions to keep his thoughts away from what happened. I asked him his name, where he live, and then his wife's name. And then he told me he lost his wife 3 years ago and that he was a single parent and suddenly he pleaded,"Please go check on his son" repetitively. I knew there was nothing I could do for his son, but to say that he was OK for now and when the EMT arrives , they will do a better job to take care of him that we could. I could not , nor would not tell him what had happened to his loved one. Only to keep him occupied on answering simple questions to avoid him from going to his truck. It was about 10 minutes before another car stopped to help as many rubber-necked as they went by. A man gets out along with his wife to give me a blanket to lay the father down. Then a few more minutes before a lady stopped and thankfully she was a nurse. No one else knew that the child was in the truck until he cried out loudly again of his child. I could only give signals to others when the father wasn't looking that the child was lost, but she went over to the P/U to access what I have gestured to her. Soon, JPD arrived and took over the scene with the EMT and FD soon arriving shortly afterwords. I was relieved by the JPD as I did not witness the accident. I was only 15 miles from home and it was the longest 15 mile ride that I could remember. I cannot sleep right now though I tried, nor do I think I will fall asleep here soon. I don't lean on shoulders much , but this is really eating at me at it involved a child and hopefully letting this out might get some of it off my chest. Thanks for lending me your ear. BEER30
25. I purchased this tach a year ago without any problems to date. Yesterday while leaving Salisbury NC and heady about eighty miles to my house it quit near Gastonia NC. When I got home I shut of the bike and turned the key back on and the tack did not cycle like it should but the needle droped lower than 0. Today I put the key in and it went up to 8,000 and back to 0 like it should, so I started it and went for a little test run. After two miles it went back to 0. I stopped and fueled up and it is working fine again and has not acted up. I originally thoght something is loose but before I tear into it I was hoping someone else has some input. The tach may be bad also.
