  1. This has probably been covered before, but I'd be darned I was able to find it during a search. Here's my problem. This just started on my 83'. I was driving down the road. Nothing special, just normal driving, when all of a sudden everything drops. Tack, engine, everything. Just like I'd hit the "kill switch". I stopped the bike and turned the key on and off, and the bike fired right up. I thought strange! But drove on down the road. Stopped to get some gas. When I turned the key to start the bike again, everything powered on...but when I hit the starter button...NOTHING!! Now keep in mind that all the lights on the dash are on. I can hear the gas pump do its thing. I checked all the fuses (yes its an old fuse box) but they were all good. I have a Delka (sp?) battery in the bike. I've installed the heavier battery cables too. New spark plugs also. Yes, I have plenty of gas. I then kept wiggling the "Kill switch" back and forth hoping that this would make a difference. (This is were I read something on the forum, but can't find the article now) Still nothing worked. I then put the kick stand up and down a few times hoing that maybe that would make a difference. Well, long story short...the bike finally turned over. I don't know exactly what worked though. So any ideas would be great! I'm a bit scared to take her out for a ride again, since I felt like I was lucky to get her home. I've since went back out to the garage and she's still starting OK. But that's a pretty scary feeling not even getting a buzz or anything. Thanks, Jack
  2. the side stand switch doesnt actuall "kill" the bike anymore. should i replace it? i cannot seem to find a new one. could it be something else????
  3. I just tried to update the text in the fork brace ad in the 1stGen parts forum. Can't do it. It will not allow me to delete the curreent text and reword it. When I did a reword, and then went to delete a couple of the pics, the added text ended up be a garbled mess. A combination of the old text and the new.. So when the time comes I'll kill the ad and start over. I think it might have had something to do with the ad being shuffled around a couple of months back between the main board and the classifieds. OK actually what it did was kill my lengthy new text and replace it with the old text... after the pic delete.
  4. I have heard that using the kickstand to shut the bike down is not the best option and that the kill switch is best. Any reason why? Thanks
  5. Ok I have a very odd problem. It is not so much a problem as it is a nuisance. If I use the kil switch ti shut off the engine then when I want to start the bike up I have to 1) turn the switch to run 2) push the starter button 3) turn the kill switch off then on again and then start it. If I just flip it on then off then on again then I will be push starting. I have to try to start it before turning it of then back on. Any ideas? It is like some possessed anti theft or something. Shaun
  6. If you remember me with the stuck float, I've got it unstuck and tested by activating the kill switch. No more fuel out the overflow. Got it all back together. Now the Starter won't turn over. Kill switch is on Run. Lights and horn works. The last time the starter turned over was when I was turning the engine over trying to unstick the float. Open to suggestions.
  7. Q. How much cocaine did Charlie Sheen do? A. Enough to kill Two and a Half Men….
  8. Been on Eflea. Found some real neet parts to bad the bike are a distant dream of some owner . But I found a boost unit a pair of real nice engine covers, all the tabs in place!! The new trans repair kit arived , that pesky 2nd gear is going to be fixed over the winter and I have found a new home for me 3bdroom towny with a garage to kill for and the rent is great.. looking forward to the Venture comming apart So thanks to all who have been so helpfull!!! Mike in Calgary:fishin: Will call on all for more advice..
  9. I have a 2008 Venture and up until now, everytime I turned the key on and moved the kill switch to the on position, I immediately heard a series of clicking noises which I presumed was the fuel relay. My battery had died and I recharged it and now it makes no clicking sound but it will start OK. Have I fried the relay or is that even what the noise was. I called the stealer and he said as long as it starts and runs it is nothing to worry about but I don't know. Please help.
  10. Would someone explain to me how my engine stop switch on my right handle bar is supposed to work. I have an 89 Venture Royale and the switch says "run" and "off" I believe. The writing is a little faded. If it is in the "off" it will not start with the start switch but "off" does not "kill" or "stop" the engine when it is running. Is this the way it is supposed to work on the Venture? Usually the "engine stop" or "kill" switch does just that. I was wondering as there might be a problem with the wiring as the previous owner did a few modifications. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you. Sam
  11. Yeah, so it's not a Venture... But I can't figure it out. I put together a go cart for my kids, using a single seater frame, and a Honda 5.5hp engine I got from Craigslist. I got everything together and buttoned up and apparently it's a Naskart. You can only turn left!!! If you make a right turn, the engine just shuts off! You can turn left all day long (which the kids are getting bored with) but turning right means I have to walk across an acre of land to pull start it again. Here's what I've checked, feel free to make suggestions... Oil level is good. (Thought there might be an oil-level kill switch that was tripping when oil shifted to the left side) Gas tank is full. Cleaned the jet on the carb, and put new gaskets on it. (Yes, I'm running SeaFoam) Checked kill switch. (Thought maybe the wires could be grounding out on turns) I'm running out of ideas (and tired of walking across the field.) I'm open to suggestions!
  12. I found a RED one (the fastest color)! What a cool bike. It handles soooo much better than my bar hopper Sabre. Now, I need guages. RPM, water temp, ambient temp, compass. I see someone on the forum buildes them..............We'll talk!!! Need a shorter smoked wind shield. I see they're for sale Also I think I want to ride without the trunk. It seems easy enuph to take off. Seems like a few bolts and the whole assembly comes off. If it is easy to get off and on then I'll only use it when on the road. (seems like over kill for around town). I will need a back rest to bolt into the same holes. Has this already been done??? Thanks for all of your help with my pre-purchase questions. Rich
  13. Biker gang indictments... CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — National leaders of the Pagans Motorcycle Club and more than 50 members and associates of the outlaw biker gang are accused of plotting to kill and extort rivals to consolidate the club's power, according to an indictment unsealed Tuesday. Article here.
  14. So i drained the battery the other day by leaving it on Today I tried one of those jump starters that plugs into the wall. Heard some popping and it didn't turn over. But the popping didn't sound good. Does that thing put out too much amperage? Did I kill it? How much is this going to cost??? :bawling: I guess it's time to send the seat to rick since I may not be riding a while...
  15. Hi guys. Weird thing started happening today. Rolling down the road, the warning light pops on and the dash goes through it's start up routine. It doesn't interupt the motor running at all but it'll kill the cruise if it's on. Happens every 50-75 miles with more and more recurring frequency. Any one have any info on this? Thanks! Great forum!
  16. Ok this doesn't make sense to me but I don't know much about motorcycles. My volt gauge reads right at 12 volts but if while cruising down the road I keep slight upward pressure on the shift pedal it reads higher:confused: I guess I will just adjust the pedal so it always sits in that possition but I was wondering why it would do that? Also another issue with the kill switch. If I put any pressure on the switch it kills it. And I don't mean it the up direction that is supposed to kill it, I mean if it is down and running if I push down more on it it dies. If I relase the pressure its fine. It's not a big deal because if I don't touch it it's fine I was just wondering if that means the switch is going bad and should be replaced so it doesn't cause a problem in the future.
  17. Today on my way home from work, I was cruising along on my 99 RSV at 60mph in 4th gear. Radio off, cruise control on. All of a sudden the engine died as if I'd hit the kill switch. Initially I thought that the cruise had just dropped out. Nope. Checked the kill switch, hadn't hit it. Flicked it back and forth a few times and tried to restart. Nothing. I have read all the posts on ignition switch failure and this sounds different. All my lights, radio, dash lights and instruments are working normally. The only problem is that when I hit the starter button nothing happens except for the engine temp light (red light on the lower right of the instrument panel) comes on until I release the button. I can hear the fuel pump run, 4-way flashers work, horn (Stebel) works....everything but the start circuit. I'm thinking kill switch failure. Any of you wizards have any thoughts before I start tearing her apart? Sure am thankful that this didn't happen last week in the middle of my 2000 mile Appalachian mountain range trip! Joe
  18. Ok folks.. need some help here. Out on the weekend for about 1300 Kms. At one point stopped to stretch etc. Went to get started and the engine won't turn over. Found out that I'd hit the kill switch to off with my helmet. So I turned it back to run and still nothing. I rocked it a few times and at one point I heard a click inside the bike. After that it started and I had no more problems. Is there a relay or something attached to the kill switch? How do I prevent this from happening again? I never use that switch (except accidentally) HELP?? Wayne
  19. Took my first ride Saturday and the bike started shutting off. Got caught at a light and it quit and had to do the tip toe walk to get it out of traffic. Got it started and as long as I kept it revved up, I could keep it running. Sunday, I took the battery tray out and cleaned the connections on the TCI and tightened the terminals. I also took the kill switch off and cleaned with contact cleaner. I also put my new diaphragms in and a new set of plugs. It still was acting up. When I got home today I took a good look at the electrical schematic. I pulled the windshield and headlight and found the emergency cut off switch, the 60º tilt switch, out of the rubber holder and hanging down. I took it apart and checked it inside and tightened the terminals and reinstalled it with a spacer to hold it tight. I started the bike and it sounded very good, very crisp and responsive. I put it back together and as I started down the driveway, it went dead. I got it started and made a loop around the block and at about 30mph in 3rd gear I let off the gas. The tach dropped to Zero and it was dead. I flipped the kill switch on and off and it backfired and it was running again. I got it back home and again took the kill switch off and checked it out. When checking voltage across the two wires, there is no voltage drop across the two wires. I really thought I had found the problem with the tilt switch hanging down, but obviously that was not the problem. I don't know anything about the TCI and when it is running, it runs very good, especially with the new diaphragms. I also pulled the pressure sensor hose loose and put a vacuum pump on it and it would rev up when vacuum was applied. I also blew cleaner through the #2 carb tube and it was open. I also checked the clutch lever and it is out all the way. Tomorrow I intend to start the check on the TCI, but for anyone that knows about these things, is it common for it to be intermittent and run so good when it is running? It is obvious I am loosing electrical power somewhere, but with it being intermittent, I am having a problem isolating the problem. I appreciate any suggestions. RandyA
  20. Anybody know a sure fire way to cure or kill a cold? It is supposed to be a great weekend and Doreen want to go for a ride. I have such a cold that if it is going to kill me, I just wish it would HURRY UP and get the job done. Thdecongestant I have taken has messed up my head so much, I have had to preview and redo this three times. Hate spring colds. Dave
  21. I need some help in tracking down a problem! In the past couple of days, I have had my 84 not willing to start. She seems to run OK but twice now when I go to start her, she won't turn over. It acts like the kill switch is off, but it isn't. The first time it happened I played with things (turning the kill switch off and on, kick stand up and down, turned the key off and on, etc) and she eventually fired up. The second time... same stuff, but no help....sooo being on a hill I jump started her, no problem at all. After both times, she started up later and runs ok. SO I am off tommorrow and have some time, where should I start looking? and how should I test (I have a low wrench IQ) Dave
  22. Hi all, anyone got a spare left hand cruise control kill switch for an 84 Venture Royal for sale? My one works but one of the lugs that hold it in place has snapped?
  23. Oh no, The Ebay guys have got me again, A White 86 with side car and under 30,000 miles. My wife would kill me, but it would mean a trip to New York to pick it up. It is Perty though Wilkie:178:
  24. I ran across this on eBay. At least somebody can see humor in the situation and of course........make a buck on it. LOL! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300294771244&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem= Freebird.....if this falls into the debated political issues feel free to kill it.
  25. Does anyone know where to find the power wire that feeds all four coils? The hot licks kit I'm installing has to tap into it to kill all coil power on the motor and lite the exhaust.
