  1. Good morning all, Anybody have any tips or tricks to get the Venture up on the center stand? On my Virago, I just straddle the bike and crush the center stand down as I pull back, that does the trick for the Vgo. I don't think I can do that with the Venture, lol. Thanks in advance. Don
  2. Does anyone make a Center Stand for the 2nd Generation?
  3. Got a couple extra dinero and I've wanted a bike jack for awhile now. What's a good, cheap (mutually exclusive terms) bike jack? Any recommendations? I have an `89 XVR13 and I've read multiple threads on jacking the beast off the ground, etc. I can't seem to find any direct recommendations or references (other than "Harbor Freight") for a decent bike jack. I'm not a major wrench twister and the jack wouldn't get used much but I do have a couple of major items to fix on my Blu before she rides again and having her sitting on a jack will be far superior to getting my fat butt up and down off the cold garage floor... Harbor Freight has 3 (seemingly identical) "bike jacks" with PN's 61632, 60536 & 69995 - all for the low low price of $99.99. They also show PN 60636 with a different configuration and double the pricetag. All 4 are rated at 1,500lbs. Sears list model 34612 for ~$120 with same weight rating and featuring 3 locking positions. Any other links / recommendations / experience or leads would be appreciated.
  4. This is in response to snaggletooth's post earlier about his side stand bolt breaking. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=48307 I started a new thread so people might look at it that had already viewed his. As was noted in previous post, the undercut on the shoulder bolt is deep. The threads are 10 mm on the shoulder bolt and the undercut is about 7.90 mm. This is about 20% of the bolts threaded diameter that has been removed. The shoulder portion of the bolt is 12 mm. I used a grade 10.9, 12 mm x 1.75 mm x 60 mm long partially threaded hex head bolt, a grade 10.9 hex head nut and a standard grade jam nut (hardware didn't have grade 10.9 jam nuts).Grade 10.9 metric is very close to an imperial grade 8. The hardware store had 12 mm x 1.50 mm bolts, but the unthreaded portion was a smaller diameter than the 1.75 mm. I would have rather had the finer threads. I used the 60 mm length because the unthreaded portion of this bolt was just the length that was required to pass through the front and back wings of the side stand. I did not want threads in that area, due to the threads would quickly wear down in diameter and increase play in side stand. The shoulder on the hex bolt measured 11.50 mm, just slightly smaller than the existing shoulder bolt by about .005". I cut the shoulder bolt to roughly 45 mm (1.75") long. Then drilled out the threaded portion of the kickstand with a 15/32" drill. This gave a very snug fit for the unthreaded portion of the new bolt. The drilled hole in the back wing is still a smaller diameter than the existing hole in the front wing of the side stand, so I do not feel it weakened the overall assembly. Replaced the side stand. I used blue loctite on threads. Tightened hardened hex bolt up until there was minimal play in the end of side stand, then ran jam nut up against hex nut. Cost was under $5.00 and took less than an hour including parts run. Comparison of new bolt & existing shoulder bolt. Back wing of side stand prior to drilling Stack-up of new fasteners after cutting hex bolt to length. Picture of side stand prior to spring being reinstalled. Gary
  5. I would like for those of you who use the chat rooms to give me an evaluation of the two solutions that I have installed at this time. The old one is pretty slick and has some nice features but doesn't work from all devices. The new one isn't as slick but seems to work just as well and is easier to get into and out of I think. It will be your call. If you choose the new one called "Shoutbox" at the top of the page then I will update it to the pro version. That won't make it any slicker looking but will add a few features such as allowing you to detach and run it in a separate window, turn the notification sounds on or off, things like that. Like I said, it is your call. From a money stand point, it's not a big deal. I would have to pay for the pro version of the new one but I also pay a yearly hosting fee separately for the old one so for the short term at least, it's pretty much a wash. So lets hear it. What do you want? The other option is that I could keep both but not upgrade the new one to the pro version. Just leave it as it is. I really don't think that we need two chat rooms though.
  6. FYI: (Fri Aug 16) Just talked with Stephanie at Rivco about a center stand for my 2000MM RSV. She said if they can get 20 orders (with a deposit to be charged when the stand is shipped), they will make a production run of RSV001 which is their center stand for '98 and newer Ventures. Their catalog shows a price of $349.95.. She said they have several calls/orders now and looking for minimum of 20.. Ask for her at 1-888-801-8222 www.rivcoproducts.com Thanks.. (I have no interest in Rivco in any way...other than purchase a center stand)
  7. I know we talked about this a couple of years ago and I checked mine then and put in a new shoulder bolt......and checked it again a year ago. But did I check it this year? Well......er ......no. So today I'm leaving work and I'm out in front of the store. I had to run back in for a second so I pull the bike up by the front walk and threw down the kick stand, leaned the bike over on it and was lifting my leg up over the back rest and I felt her start to drop. Like a rock. I've got the right leg still in the air and the left foot is sliding away. I'm a big fella at 6' 3" and 285 but the bike had me at the disadvantage at that point. I got my right leg back down on the far side and got my left foot to stop skidding and got the bike stopped from going over any farther. So there I am.....holding up the great beast at a rather difficult angle......can't tell if I'm at a stopping point or if I let her back to the left if she will keep going. Hummmm....why am I sweating like this? So there was a fella that saw me wrestling the bike and he came running over. Nice guy, and thank you sir for the offer, but he's all of 5'5" and a 150 lbs if that. He asked what he could do to help. Me: "Look for the pink thing" Him: "What's it look like?" Me: "Pink....maybe a little purple by now" Him: "What's it shaped like?" Me: "Kinda round.......a little fussy looking" Him: "Where would it be?" Me: "Probably by my left boot" Him: "Did it fall off the bike?" Me: "No sir.....it may have fallen off me!" Then it hit him......and at that point he was worthless. Couldn't quit laughing. But he was able to give me a boost back up and got her balanced again and able to get off and get her on the center stand. Yep....broken shoulder bolt and the flange was spread open. I was prepared. I had an extra kick stand at home. A spare part I never thought I would need. Yeah...right. Now I don't know how many of you guys have tried to get off one of these things without using the kick stand and have a back rest to boot.....but it's a bit probmatic. So take a minute to take a look at that bolt and save yourself the conversation I had to have with a complete stranger. I'm betting he will remember the big guy in the leather jacket and dark shapes that sounded like a choir boy. Check all your nuts while you're at it. I've got mine on ice now. If I make it back to tenor by tonigiht I'll be happy.
  8. I again want to remind everyone to check the play in their side stand. When changing the oil on Rocket's 86, out of habit, I checked the side stand and there was at least an inch play at the end of the side stand tip. When I removed the side stand, the forks were splayed open and the bolt was bent. I was able to use my hydraulic press to bend the fork tips back parallel and also straighten the bolt. With the side stand now fitting the frame mount just snug enough to not bind, I pulled the side stand off and checked the seating of the bolt. The shoulder of the bolt seated with a gap under the head of the bolt so I used a thin washer so the bolt seated at the shoulder and the nut at the same time. I cleaned everything and reassembled and tightened the bolt to the point it was almost binding and then tightened the nut. I was able to get it to the point there may have been an eighth inch play at the tip of the side stand without any binding. When we did his 83, there was about the same amount of play, but the bolt was not bent, but there was a slight step worn on the side of the bolt and the forks on the side stand were splayed about the same. Again did the washer trick and got about an eighth inch play when tightened back in place. I am really glad I was able to fix this as his bike has a lot of lean on the side stand and with the trailer hooked up, it would have been a disaster to encounter a broken side stand/bolt. Rocket should pick up another side stand bolt, but for now I believe he is good to go as long at he monitors the looseness. Again, for those of you that have never had you side stand fail, and it will if you let it get loose enough, you can hardly imagine how big of a problem it can be. RandyA
  9. I have read some old posts about center stands but nothing lately. I found this site that sells a stand but they claim it only works on models 99-06. Of course I have a 07. I’m going to give them a call tomorrow and see if that may a misprint as I would think they would all be the same. Does anyone have some feedback on the subject? http://www.buckeyeperformance.com/products.htm
  10. Well I finally finished making the bracket to mount a 1st gen center stand onto the RSV. Seems to work well, only problem is the retract spring. The one I bought for it is waay to flimsy for the task. Can anyone recommend a suitable spring that I can buy that will do the job? Cheers, D.W.
  11. Hey, fellas. Today I built the bracketry to mount a first gen stand as per Freebird's excellent tech article. I have, however, run into something Freebird never encountered, and he suggested I post here to find out what to do. As you can see, the charcoal cannister has to come off to make room for the stand. Seems like connecting the 2 hoses together is probably the way to go, but I'm afraid it will change the way it runs. The cannister is vented to air, so should I put a tee down there? Any suggestions to keep me from messing things up would be appreciated!
  12. I just mounted a 1st gen center stand on my 99 RSV. I now need to remove the rear wheel to replace the wheel bearings. Is it possible to do this using the center stand instead of the bike lift? I'd hate to remove the center stand to facilitate the bike lift. I'd have to remove both bags and one side rail but will I still need to jack the bike up to get the wheel out or is the center stand going to be high enough ( the rear wheel is 1.5" off the floor with the center stand).
  13. I am feeling rather foolish to have to ask this -- but I don't have a Clymers manual for my 85 Royale as of yet... I need to check the trany fluid level -- and my feeble brain can't figure it out. I had noticed some leakage about a week and a half ago after bringing the bike up to where I am staying during the week. It was on the right side dripping off the exhaust pipe -- which was strange since it was leaning left on the kick stand. It did not leak directly after parking it, but a few days later after having sat without being run. It has since stopped the leaking... I do have it on the center stand now and the engine oil is very near the top line in the sight glass so I don't think it was engine oil unless that had been over filled. The coolant is where it should be (don't think it was coolant anyway) so the only thing left is the transmission... Would someone point a quasi weekend mechanic in the right direction? Thanks Scott
  14. does anyone have a good kick stand sping I notice mine KS is starting to hit when i take sharp curves. Thanks
  15. Your supposed to check the oil level with the bike standing up on a level surface, correct? IE not sitting on the kick stand? My bad but I'm checking the oil for the first time since buying the bike last week from the sealership. Either the stealership or the PO WAY overfilled the oil. I can't see the top oil level unless she's sitting on her kick stand!
  16. Is it just me or is it slightly harder to pull the bike off the side stand with the leveling links installed? Honestly, it could all be in my mind but I installed the links this weekend and it just seems to me that it's harder to pull the bike off the side stand. Anyone have the same experience?
  17. I've been working on the 83 Venture for the last couple of months. My brother has been riding this and a lot of problems developed, and he brought it back for repairs. This bike has 140,000 miles on the clock. The stator was bad, so I changed that and now it charges fine. The clutch was slipping a little, so I installed one of Earl's kits and how it's great. The right half of the fairing had a lot of broken/cracked tabs as did a lot of other plastic, so I dug out the Plastex kit and went to work. New plugs made it run a lot better, and I also pulled out the TCI module and checked it for corroded diode leads....still looks perfect, and the diodes are fine electrically. I installed a new rear tire, and fought with the mess that the old formula Ride-ON left. I serviced the driveshaft and also changed the oil in the shaft drive unit. I'm sure I fixed several other things that are slipping my mind now, but it was ready for a test ride. Now, when Mark brought it to me, he told me that the low brake fluid indicator has been on for quite a while. He says he filled up the rear master and it had been empty and the fault went out. I bled the brakes, including the top line near the top steering bearing, and I've haven't been able to get what I call a good brake pedal. It has a lot of free play, although when it does finally apply the brakes, the pedal is firm....no more air in the line. I looked at the rear master cylinder, and I can see where the paint has bubbled off. It looks like that's where the brake fluid went, although nothing is leaking now (it might leak during winter storage). I suppose I should add that this bike has braided brake lines, and the anti dive has been disconnected, so the brake pedal was high and firm when Mark took the bike. I've got to decide how to take care of this. Another thing that became obvious....the shift lever has a lot of play in it. Yesterday when I watched my brother shift, I saw that he's not at all gentle, but pushes and lifts the lever aggressively. Anybody have any idea where to look for something in the shift linkage wearing out?? Then I"ve got to figure out what's not correct with the center stand. The small link that the spring attaches to keeps on bending. This bike isn't really an 83 anymore, because when the 83 frame broke where the center stand and rear shock attach, I installed all of the 83 pieces on an 84 frame. From the beggining, I 'assumed' that there was something different here and I just lived with the fact that the center stand didn't come all the way up when it was not being used. I looked in the Yammie parts fische, and 83 to 93 all use the same part numbers for the center stand, link and spring....no changes made when they redesigned the frame. My son and I inspected the center stand and link, and my son saw that the link was bent. We removed it and straightened it out, and then re-installed it. Then the center stand released all the way up against the frame like it was supposed to. That was until I put the bike back on the center stand and then the link bent again. I've got to determine what's bending it. I want to get this bike out of my garage again. Frank D.
  18. As always, Craigslist cost me some more $$ today. Saw a simple ad for "cargo trailer" in the motorcycle section, clicked and it read "Shoreline cargo trailer. Works well". No pictures in the ad, no phone # but I sent a e-mail for more info and sent my phone #. I forgot about the ad then later this morning I get a call from the guy. I asked what kind of shape it was in and he said.....Well it has a few chips in the paint in the front from being towed and a small scuff in the paint on a back corner. I'm thinkin....wouldn't it be great if that were the ONLY issues?! I got the directions and headed over to look at it. It turns out he bought it new in 1981, used it gently for a few years then it sat in his barn "for a looooong time". His description was right on! When he first bought it he didn't like the short tongue and the way it towed and he wanted to get the ice chest out of the inside for more room so he made a new 1 piece tongue, added a rack for the ice chest, made a insulated cover for the ice chest then decided to build a rear bumper and have it chromed. He also said there were some problems with the wiring when it was new and instead of laying on the ground to work on the wiring,he built a really neat stand that slides under the trailer hooking on to the axle and rear frame section. Once the stand is under the trailer, you simply pick up the tongue and the trailer rolls on to the back and is VERY sturdy. This makes it a breeze to check the wiring, pack the bearings etc. He had the trailer stored on end in the barn for years. This demo of the stand gave me a good opportunity to inspect the bottom of the fiberglass and frame etc. Anyway, the fiberglass is in like new condition, the original paint is still in pretty good shape(good enough to use as is) and he included a chrome swivel hitch, the stand, the ice chest and cover and 2 new unmounted tires. It cost me about as much as a new HF tagalong would have but The Shoreline is built much better IMO. So far my only plans are to change out the bulbs for LEDs,clean, inspect and pack the bearings, mount new tires and change the plug out to one that will hook to my bike. I couldn't resist and took it to town, loaded up 80 pounds of dog food and a weeks worth of groceries and it pulled fine. I haven't had time to clean the barn dust off yet but it don't look too bad............ http://i47.tinypic.com/30139ea.jpg http://i49.tinypic.com/1zoak95.jpg
  19. Does anyone here happen to have a sidestand for my 85 G1? If you do please pm me asap with price etc, so I can get it shipped out airmail as I have a trip planned for next Friday and I am not sure it will make it even with airmail. it will be an intersting trip if I have to use the center stand everywhere.....lol Thats quite a shocker when the stand lets go and the bike and you come over on to the pavement...All is good, just a couple of small scratches on the new paint and left mirror....my elbow took a good whack on the parking lot, but it will heal and at least elbows dont need paint. I know Ive had plenty of warnings from all you guys here, and Ive given my side stand a look once in a while, but I didnt do the real good look over like I should have. So, to anyone else that hasnt checked your sidestand go outside and check it right now!!!
  20. Iv'e looked through page after page, and can't find anybody having my problem. I can turn the key off of my 2002 RSV and put it on the kick stand and walk away, and the next thing you know the radio and my GPS that is plugged into my 12v outlet comes on. I can get back on the bike push the starter button, it won't start then I can set it back on the stand and it go's back off. All with the key in my hand. After standing it up, and it coming back on,then setting it back on the stand, and it going back off several times it stays off. Now it has set for a few days I get on the bike stand it up and it comes on. I start it, the battery is charged I turn it off and the radio and GPS is still on after the key is out. I lean the bike over on the stand it go's off.
  21. Since it will be wet and the ground possibly soft. I will bring a supply of polished Stainless steel pads to put under your side stand (a pair also works well under the center stand) so we do not have to pick up to many bikes that might want to take a nap in the nice soft wet grass. It will be first come first serve.
  22. A Tennessee fan walks into a restaurant and sits next to an Auburn fan with a Auburn hat & t-shirt on. He says to the fan, "A-U-B-U-R-N, what does that stand for?" The Auburn fan replies, "Alabama Usually Beats Us 'Round November." He turns to the Tennessee fan, sees UT on his hat and says, "What does UT stand for?" The Tennessee fan replies, "Us Too."
  23. I recently learned about the donation process when you dump your bike. 1) It was back in around Oct of 2010. I was in the garage and wanted to turn the Venture around. I was recovering quite well from open heart surgury on 4 May 2010. But I was in no condition to picking up an 800 lbs of Venture. The Story: While turning the Venture around in the garge, I knew had to be careful. So I put the kickstand down so it would catch the fall in case I dropped the VR. So with the side stand down I was also off the Venture's left , I pushed the Venture foward, In so doing the side stand druged on something and kicked the stand back. beyond the threshhold point. After I got the bike where I wanted it I let it onto what I tought was the side kick stand down. Oops no side kick stand, the bike started go down and I just let it go. I first put it in gear and took a come-along and hooked it to the frame of the pick up trunk and got the Venture up. 2) I pulled off the side of the road where it was paved. It was up hill on a sharp corner and the sidepaved road went up to greet me. I also stoped for I needed to turn around the VR aroiund for I went too far. So I stop where I could let gravity push me back and to the right. Well because the right side of where I stoped was quickly going dow, I had to get the bike stopped and leaned to the left. Everything happend so fast. The bike leaned over to the right side and over she went. It so happend that a you guy stopped and asked if I needed help get the VR back upright. I humbled accepted his offer.
  24. Is it possible to remove the front tire/wheel on a 2007 RSTD, or Venture, with using just the center stand and raising the front tire with the center stand down ? I am going to put extra bracing and such under the front of her if this is possible to do. Looks like about two - three inches of room there to get the wheel off. Just wondering if anyone else has tried it ? I have a jack and a lift, but I need to change the front and the rear. So plan to remove the front and do it and then put her on the Harbor Freight lift and do the rear, I know that works great. But never tried the front with just the center stand down, not side stand, but center stand that I put on last year. Thanks you all. Fuzzy
  25. I need to replace my kick stand,I have the replacement. What's the best way to remove/install the spring. Thanks George
