  1. I would like for those of you who use the chat rooms to give me an evaluation of the two solutions that I have installed at this time. The old one is pretty slick and has some nice features but doesn't work from all devices. The new one isn't as slick but seems to work just as well and is easier to get into and out of I think. It will be your call. If you choose the new one called "Shoutbox" at the top of the page then I will update it to the pro version. That won't make it any slicker looking but will add a few features such as allowing you to detach and run it in a separate window, turn the notification sounds on or off, things like that. Like I said, it is your call. From a money stand point, it's not a big deal. I would have to pay for the pro version of the new one but I also pay a yearly hosting fee separately for the old one so for the short term at least, it's pretty much a wash. So lets hear it. What do you want? The other option is that I could keep both but not upgrade the new one to the pro version. Just leave it as it is. I really don't think that we need two chat rooms though.
  2. I am sure many of you will laugh at me but here it goes. The day is coming, although hopefully not for several years, when it will be just too much for me to get my leg over my 1st gen Venture and it will be just too heavy for me to handle it safely. I'm sure not looking forward to that day as I like my VR as much or more than any of the bikes I have owned over the last 49 years. Well, at the Toronto Bike show this past weekend, I saw a new model BMW that I think will allow me to keep on riding and enjoying it. Here it is:http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/motorcycles/2012models/2012-BMW-C650GTc.jpg Yes, its a scooter that BMW calls a C650GT which has all the features that I think will make it an extremely comfortable two up touring machine. The only limitation that I can see is that it may not allow me to pull a trailer. Has anyone here seen one of these on the road or rode one? Here in Ontario, I know BMW will feature this model at their demo day this spring.
  3. Over the years there have been a number of thread by folks regarding issues with their Web browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc etc) ... I don't think I've even once seen anyone post anything about Maxthon ... except myself. This leads me to wonder ... does anyone else on here use this web browser or am I the only one? http://www.maxthon.com/mx3/?v=3.3.1.2000 I have been using this browser since it first came out back in the late 90's. Then it was called MyIE. Of all the others I have tried and worked with, I always come back to Maxthon. It has some really great features and some of those features which are now available in IE, FireFox, etc were in Maxthon long before. Maxthon uses the same rendering engine that IE uses (Trident). If you haven't taken a look at it yet, check it out ... you might just find it a good (or maybe even great) alternative to what you are now using, especially if you've been having issues.
  4. What heated grips would you recommend for a 91 VR MKII. What are the features one should look for in heated grips.
  5. The main features I want are the navigation and the MP3 player. Is the 550 my best bet? I really don't think I will use features like loading in trips, etc.
  6. Does anybody have the I-Pilot on their trolling motor ? I just bought a CoPilot but am seriously considering an I-Pilot for the extra features. Anybody have any experience with one ?
  7. Yesterday at the International Motorcycle Show here in Toronto, I saw this new model Gmax open face helmet with some new features that appear to be good ones - you can see the helmet at http://www.g-max.com/gmax/replace-gm67s.html. One of the new features is an optional battery powered led light bar that fits into the back of the helmet and can be turned on or off and can also be synced with the brake lights by way of a small transmitter. A similar light has been available on Gmax snowmobile helmets but from a conversation with guys from the company that makes them, I am told this is the first helmet with these lights for their motorcycle helmets. I am interested in any comments on why this may not be as good a safety option for bikers as it is for the snowmobilers. In addition, this helmet has several other interesting features including a good quality internal sun visor that the rider can flip up or down, built in pockets for headset speakers and a removable chin bar plus more - and the show price was reduced 20% to $79 here in Canada.
  8. Any recommendations on a good tank bag for an 89 VR? Also for a good rear passenger bag. Like to know what kind of features to look for and why.
  9. I'm in the market for a new GPS. And I'm interested in the Nuvi 765T. My Question is. How is the Quality of the Build in MP3 and the Bluetooth...and is it easy to use these Features when you are riding. thanks

  12. This compact model comes with all the same features and functions as much larger units. Some of the features include motion sensor, proximity alarm and vibration alert. It is self arming and requires little maintenance. Don’t let it’s size fool you … this is a very effective unit!
  13. ...and I have to admit I'm super impressed!! Real easy to use, love the icon, and all sorts of neat features to it!! Also glad I spent the extra for the 550 instead of the 450. Can't wait to actually use it on the bike!!
  14. OK folks...it's that time again. I have some updating to do on our software here and it is pretty major. I may even have to back it up before I do it this time. First of all, in preparation of a major upgrade, I will be slightly changing the URL of the forum. This will affect you only if you have the actual forum bookmarked and come straight here instead of to the home page. The URL is now http://www.venturerider.org/forum the new URL will be http://www.venturerider.org/forums The only difference is the plural forums instead of forum. The reason for this is because about 4 years ago when I started this site, I used forum instead of forums and should not have done that. All upgrades and changes that I make assume the default is "forums" and it causes me a LOT of extra work having to change all the files. That is just the small part. There is a major upgrade coming in the very near future. Not sure yet about the exact date but I will give another warning. It could be a few days from now or a couple of weeks. The new upgrade will add a number of new features. There are some new features included that I will likely disable because I just don't know that I like them. One such thing is "social networking". It basically allows members to create their own custom profile pages, much like MySpace and similar where you can post pictures, personal interests, even public messages and responses. I don't know that I like that idea. I am afraid that it will take away from the general forum. If everybody is posting and swapping messages on their personal pages, I think it will take away from the "one family" feel that we have now. There are other features also though and some good reasons for doing the upgrade. More on all of this later. I will give another warning before making the changes and then will list the new features gained from it.
  15. This morning, I found this article under my News Headlines on my google news home page. Scary, but interesting, especially since I come from a "typewriter" age. What do you guys think? This author with the New York Times had a link on there to share - so I copied and pasted this article. You’re Not Buying Gadgets Any More, You are Subscribing To Them By Saul Hansell Tags: Blu ray, digital television, Televisions When I wrote last week, about the apparent victory of Blu-ray discs over HD DVD, there was a deluge of comments from readers. Those that agreed with my take on things, let’s say, were a rather small—if well-informed—minority. One of the many assertions that readers found objectionable, was the idea that any standard for high-definition discs is better than a format war. HD DVD’s defenders listed that format’s many advantages, such as the requirement that players include an Internet connection. This enables interactive features as well as updates to the player software. The readers are right. It was silly of Sony not to put an Ethernet jack on the back of every Blu-ray player. It was perfectly clear when the specification was being finalized that we are in a connected world, where nearly every experience can be made better by a network connection. The most common Blu-ray player, Sony’s PlayStation 3 console, does have an Ethernet jack, of course. But technologies evolve. Smart engineers hate limits, and they create ways to overcome them. Indeed, today Ars Technica has a long analysis about the Blu-ray 2.0 specification. Guess what? The next generation of Blu-ray players will have network connections, as well as more memory and processing power so they can match some of the tricks of HD DVD. Of course, the 500,000 people who have bought stand alone Blu-ray players won’t have access to these features. But that is the price of being an early adopter. To stay sane, any consumer needs to think of digital technology as a subscription rather than a product. In the old days, you could buy a typewriter, television or a camera, and it might well last decades. Computers have been different. Once you buy a PC, you are really signing up to upgrade it on a regular basis. Now digital consumer electronics are the same. Your camera, video disc player, and even your television are now likely to become obsolete in just a few years. Everyone who walks into the Best Buy understands that you pay more for a device with fancier features and newer technology. But the price difference is greater than what appears on the price tags: To keep yourself on the leading edge, you will have to replace your devices more frequently with more expensive devices than those people who want older, more established technology. Buy a G.P.S. and you can choose to be on the $900-every-two-years plan, the $300-every-four-years plan or the $150-every eight-years-plan. Sure, you can replace your cheap machines more often or keep your expensive machines longer. But you are letting your position on the innovation curve shift. It’s no different than changing from the cheap to the expensive Netflix or cable package. Indeed, the price of high-tech devices can often tell the buyer where on the replacement cycle the product is. Clearly, anyone buying a high-priced high-definition disc player this early is signing up for a much shorter replacement cycle. (But note: Toshiba may be using heavy discounting to signal consumers that the technology is far more stable than it actually is.) Digital televisions are especially in flux. The features are changing. The quality, reliability and especially the affordability improves substantially each year. So every buyer of a digital TV has had to cope with the feeling that come up seeing the Sunday ad supplements offering a set with much better specs at a much lower price in less than a year. But again, if you choose to think of a television as a subscription, this may get a little easier to swallow. Accept this idea of consumer electronics as a subscription and you can defend profligate spending on the latest gadget or pinching pinching for a necessity.
  16. I know little to nothing about GPS's. So I was wondering what you thought is a good GPS for bikes. Preferebly one that is priced reasonable. Would like to know what features one should look for, and what options would be beneficial to have. Thanks Brad
