  1. HI! New to this site. Looks like a bunch of good information. I am looking to purchase a '99 XVZ1300 Royal Star Venture for about $3700. I was reading up on the specs and noted this bike has carburetors. Aren't carbs hard to maintain? I have a good shop - how often would I need maintenance on the carbs? Thanks for your insights. Aaron
  2. This will be our 4th annual Maintenance Day here at our place, The date is June 27th and anybody that wants to come and camp is wellcome there are motels 6 miles away in Viroqua if you are not into camping. We start it out on Thursday and go till Sunday, I will have rides planed out for Friday and Saturday cant have a bunch of cycle riders here and not take them out and show them the great riding roads we have around here. Its been a great time each each year and look forward to many more. I will be getting it on the calendar so you can go on there and RSVP and I will put the list motels on there also. It will be good to see our old friends and get to make some new ones. Orlin and Sharon
  3. With so many of us traveling to Maintenance Day I wonder if there is a VentureRider.Org "standard" CB channel that is used. Anyone?
  4. I'm working on a '92 Royale and I will be removing the rear wheel to put on a new tire. I was thinking this would be a good time to change the wheel bearing (odometer reads 27,000+ but I think it's 127,000+). I'm having a hard time figuring out what exactly to order. On the fiche, I see a collar (90387-203H7-00), cylindrical bearing (93317-32635-00) and a bearing (93306-30417-00). Do I need all three of these parts? I can't find the collar. Do I need something else? What usually gets changed, if anything? Or, is the rear wheel bearing not something that usually gets changed and I just need to make sure it's greased? Thank you so much for reading this post and I look forward to reading any replies. Richard
  5. Ok you have to add on to see where this story goes, I'll start. I jumpped on my second gen and started riding to Maintenance Day, just a passing all those first gens. Then I saw...
  6. Please go to the calendar and add your name if you plan to attend. Here is the link to the event on our calendar. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=337&day=2013-6-8&c=1 For those who don't know anything about Maintenance Day, I just added some information here: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=73841 EVERYBODY is welcome. It doesn't matter if you have been a member for 4 years or 4 days, we would love for you to join us.
  7. I have an aux fuel cell connected via a valved T between the Main/Reserve selector and the fuel pump. Can I use that at Maintenance Days to run my bike if I take the tank off? Do I need to short the fuel sender unit or something? Dave
  8. What octane rating do you use? Does a higher rating make a difference in the performance level and maintenance of a Second Gen or late model RSTD motor?
  9. I just bought one used off of this site's classifieds and it arrived today. Wow, is this thing way more stout than I thought it would be. Pretty happy with it. Looking forward to adjusting valves and other maintenance this winter.
  10. OK folks. After taking a quick look at my schedule for 2013, I'm thinking about having my maintenance day on the weekend of June 8th. That is well after Marcarl's meet and the week before father's day. Am I missing anything?
  11. Hi all, I hate to be the new guy wanting help, but hey, that's probably why most people find this site. I just bought a '99 RSV and trusted the seller a little too much. Apparenty he lied about having a dealer service done a 30,000 miles including the valves. I called the dealer and they had no record, and emailed him. He admitted he lied. Sooo, now after gathering myself and considering suing the prick, I have much maintenance to do on the bike including the valves (it has 36,000 miles on it with some engine noise that makes me nervous), changing fluids, (since I found my clutch fluid almost empty today after the bike was lurching forward with the clutch all the way in), as well as other needed things. Is there a maintenance day planned in this part of the world in the NEAR future? I really don't want to spend the money it looks like I could have to in order to have a reliable bike I trust having my wife on, and I use this bike as my daily rider to work... Or perhaps someone in the area who would be willing to show me some things?
  12. Eileen want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you who came to Maintenance Day this year. We love doing this and our reward is seeing everybody having a nice time. That is all it is about. It was great spending time with old friends and familiar faces and always great meeting new people. As usual, you were all a class act. The numbers were down a bit this year but we still had a fantastic crowd. I think I made a mistake this year when I moved it forward by a week. A lot of folks had graduations and etc. to attend. We were not at all disappointed in the turnout but there were some of our regulars that we truly missed. I will try next year to move it to the middle of June again. A special thanks to all who jumped in and helped with the Maintenance activities. I simply could not do this without your help. I know that Skydoc truly missed having V7Goose around as well as Squidley and a couple others who usually jump in and help. Also, a special thanks to all the ladies who help Eileen get the food arranged and served and maintaining some sense of order to things. It was another successful weekend that Eileen and I both agree went by way too quick. We are already looking forward to next year. Well, at least we will be after a good nights sleep.
  13. Just wanted to let you all know that I will have 4 sets of Mic-Mutes available at Maintenance Day. Bill won't be able to make it this year but has mailed me 4 sets for the RSV if any of you need one. The price is $139.95 so you can be prepared. It is a great product.
  14. I will be riding two up from Charlotte to Maintenance Day. We plan on leaving just south of Charlotte NC at about 6am. We will be going straight up I77 most of the way. If anyone would like to ride with us all or part of the way drop me a PM and we will see if we can set it up.
  15. Just wondering, it was previously discussed in a prior thread on stator and rectifier problems that the 2006 through current model has the highest output stator, equal to the upgraded models that are available as replacements. If that is so, they recommend that the wires be hard wired.Would cleaning and dialectric grease help prevent the bad connections that happen in these areas or would it somehow make it worse? I'm not having any problems right now, but was trying to do some preventative maintenance and save some time and money down the road. I don't want to have to hardwire until it is necessary. Also, what are some thoughts on replacing just the rectifier to one like SkyDoc17 sells. It is supposed to be better.but I'm not to good on electrical, and wish some one could explain it as simple as possible so hopefully I understand. If it would help,I would replace the original to get the most out of the system.Any thoughts or experience on this would be greatly appreciated
  16. Due to my work schedule I can never seem to get off work to attend "maintenace days", therefore this past weekend I relied on the forum and some general mechanical "know how" to do it myself. Most of the maintenance items are no big deal for most of you but a couple of things I completed was a personal accomplishment for me. The list of things completed: New tires front and back (E3's) mounted and balanced, brakes checked, engine oil and filter changed, rear hub and gears greased and oil changed. I would like to check my carbs and sync them and check/lub the steering head if need but goes beyond my comfort zone. Hopefully I can find some members close to central Arkansas that can help me with these things. I know I saved some $'s and I now feel less dependant on a dealer. Thanks to all who have posted pictures and descriptions it has been a HUGE HELP !!!!!!!!!!!
  17. Sunday night the clocks sprang forward an hour. Here in Atlanta the daffodils, jonquils and tulips have popped up and the Bradford pears are approaching full bloom. The weather guessers are forecasting 80 degrees this week, my floral Hawaiian shirts are finding their way to the front of the closet and my throttle hand has started to quiver. All of which are sure signs that riding season is upon us. With that in mind I am now motivated to complete my annual winter retrofit, maintenance and mod upgrade projects on the bike and look forward with adventure in my heart and planning on my mind for my Spring and Summer road trip schedule to catch up with old and new VR friends. Since I'm getting started a little too late to make Daytona Spring Bike Week :doh:and I don't anticipate having enough accrued vacation and cash flow to do Sturgis again this year. So far this is what I'm thinking as doable It might be about time to resurrect a N. Ga M&E day run and/or maintenance Day. In the next 4 to 6 weeks Myself and my friend Richard (Owner of the 07 Midnight Venture loaner I've been riding for the past two years) have tentatively planned a back roads route trip from Atlanta to St. Mary's/King bay, Coastal Georgia for a three day weekend trip. Free bird's Ohio Maintenance Day for sure this year in early June. The Western NY International Rally if at all possible. Isn't this a off year for Vogel and has anybody mentioned a Asheville M&E. Until then and most any decent weekend in between I'm up for a day trip or weekend overnighter within range. The point being what are y'all planning. Who's game to come with or invite to whatever rides you may be planning within my doable range:thumbsup2:, work schedule:bang head: and available disposable resources.
  18. Getting ready to do maintenance on forks and steering head on my 2005 R S Deluxe. any shortcuts for fork removal? Seems a little crazy! I'm used to pinch bolts and down goes the forks. While it's apart contemplating accessory lighting, BIG on function over cosmetics. ALSO Valve adjustment time any Advice/Shortcuts? My R S has 15,000 miles and is 7 years old, put 4000 miles on last year. Last Spring I did shaft drive maintenance and Bled original fluids till clear from clutch and brakes. Flushed coolant and replaced thermo. Any other suggestions while she'sapart? Many Thanks
  19. was thinking of putting together a nc maintenance day however i don't have all the tools and very little knowledge on working on these bikes.(no lift or stand) i have a two car garage for working on them just thought i'd ask for some feed back on this.not trying to get to fancy just trying to do something for nc.if i lived close to the coast it would be no problem, i could just kidnap muffinman, lol.please give me your thoughts and tell me if i'm grasping at straws or not, thanks.
  20. A buddy of mine is getting ready to sell their '99 Miata ragtop - - cherry condition, 88K miles, glossy black, custom rims, leather interior. Looking to get $7,000 for it. I am sooooo tempted, but I'm afraid that I might like it as much as my RSV and be totally conflicted on nice riding days! The maintenance and insurance cost would be a lot more, but it's a really pretty little car. A definite head turner. What to do, what to do?????
  21. Just put my 2005 RSTD in the shop for major maintenance (valve adjustment, plugs, etc, etc). I have a question: the maintenance schedule says to replace brake lines every two years. WHY??? I have had bikes most of my life, and I do not recall ever seeing anything in routine maintenance about replacing brake lines/hoses. As always, any help is appreciated.
  22. http://mic.org/downloads/MIC_Tire_Guide_2011.pdf A worthwhile reading tire and maintenance guide. Nothing startling and new though.
  23. I have been very lucky with my RSTD. The stock battery finally died last week (after 7 trustworthy/faultless years!) This is the winter to do some more detailed maintenance. I have an estimate of $750 from my local dealer for adjusting the valves, new plugs, synching the carbs, and flush/fill of the coolant system. That seems fair to me. However, the dealer is saying that - at 25,000 miles - I am overdue to have the steering head repacked at $900!!! No way. Just asking: how much have you paid to have the steering head repacked (and is it even necessary?) As always, THANKS! in advance.
  24. OK folks, I'm trying to set a date for Maintenance Day. I always have to squeeze it in between company meetings, trade shows, etc. At this time, I'm looking at Saturday June 2nd. There will always be those who have conflicts on whatever date I pick but so far, this seems like the best date. I'm just putting it up for your comments.
