  1. I think the 10% figure for Hardleys that made it home is probably propaganda . . . most likely put out by Hardley. Think the figure is more like 5% (maybe 7% if kept in town and used for bar-hopping). But they DO polish up nicely. One should always carry polish when on a HD, as it gives you something to do while waiting for the tow truck to arrive.
  2. As one who has owned a few of the unmentionable rattlecans . . . they can and do just die sometimes. Often, in fact. Sometimes if you'll just pour part of a can of Bud over them or have a stripper rub against them, they will fire right up. Sometimes not.
  3. Guess they just get quieter as they get tighter. In that case, valve noise is a good thing. Now . . . if I can just get used to riding a bike that sounds like a coffee can filled with nuts and bolts, all will be well.
  4. I just had my valves adjusted as part of a 25K maintenance. There was always a little valve chatter, but now they sound like a coffee can filled with bolts. The dealer says that the valves tighten/quieten over time; seems adjusting the valves back to spec just makes them noisier. Does that sound right to you?
  5. Anyone have a source for the magnetic drain plug; it sounds like a good idea.
  6. Using Mobil 1 motorcycle oil, I do not see why the mileage could not be extended up to 10,000 safely. I never put 10K on my bike in a year and I understand the rational behind the yearly change. I am now planning/mapping out an early summer trip from MS to CO, MT, AZ, etc; the main reason I am so interested in oil change intervals is that the last time I made a trip like this, I ended up having the oil changed on the road (because it was past the 3K mark). Stupid! I feel very comfortable now in putting in new oil/filter and making a 5K trip without changing anything.
  7. Good info here. Looks like changing it once a year is the deal; seems mileage will easily stretch to 5K-7.5K between changes . . . maybe even 10K. Might do 5K and send in a sample and have it analyzed. Thanks again.
  8. THAT is my curiosity on this: do acids appear in fully synthetic oil? Are the acids a product of something other than oil breakdown?
  9. allwx, I have a 10,000 mile change interval on my car (VW turbo diesel). Last used oil analysis at Blackstone showed that I could go further still beyond the 10K, but that is VW factory recommendation, so I change every 10K.
  10. Found 7500 change intervals with the same oil at BITOG. I am curious if synthetic oil breaks down like conventional oil (reason for the 12 month change regardless of mileage). I would tend to think that synthetic oil does not need changing every 12 months like dino oil.
  11. Appreciate the response. I have a VW TDI (diesel) that is on 10,000 mile changes (Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil). That's the VW recommended change interval on the diesel. That is really what got me thinking that a 3000 oil change on the bike is ridiculous.
  12. That sounds good. I always change it once a year and always change the filter; I have just been doing it at 3000 miles (which seems like overkill). Thanks.
  13. I always change the Mobil 1/filter in the spring even when it has less than my usual 3000 miles between changes. I am beginning to think that 5000 mile/once a year change intervals would be adequate. What do you think? Is anyone using a 5K change interval with a top shelf fully synthetic oil like Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40?
  14. Just decide if you can live without a cassette deck; if you cannot live without one, get the Venture. Otherwise, get the RSTD.
  15. New Dunlop E3s here. Had Michelin Commanders before (got over 18000 miles and six years from them), but - like you said - no Commander II for the front yet.
