  1. When I bought my 83VR in December I had no idea what oil was being used in it. I changed it using 20w50 Valvoline regular motorcycle oil. I would like to chance to synthetic oil. In the past when I tried to use synthetic oil in cars that had some miles on them they leaked oil quite badly. My 83 has 48000 miles in it. Do you think it would be safe to go to synthetic?
  2. Hey folks, I need your expertise. Today my wife and I took a quick ride to grab a bite, and basically clear the cobwebs before we start another weeks work. As I was pulling out of the neighborhood, going through the gears getting up to speed, in 4th gear the bike revved a little and it sounded like clutch slippage. It was so quick and faint that I wasn't sure that I had actually experienced it. then we stopped at a red light. As we pulled away from the light, in 3rd or 4th, I can't remember which gear, it did it again. This time I felt for sure that it was clutch slippage. A mile or so after that, we hit an entrance ramp and got on the freeway. After I clicked it into 5th, and was throttling up to 70 mph, it revved again. From that point on it never did again. While we were eating, I remembered that a couple weeks ago when I rode it last, it had done the same thing once as I was pulling out of our neighborhood, but then didn't do it again the rest of the day. I thought then that I had imagined it, but not today. I know what I experienced today. So, my question is, 3 weeks ago I changed the oil, and for the first time I used synthetic oil, could the synthetic oil be causing slippage? The bike is a 2007 RSTD with 24k miles and has been perfect up until now. Please advise.
  3. Hi, fellas. If you followed up on my last post, you know that I dragged home another project. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=65645 Now here is my question: Did Yamaha use a special break-in oil, or should I just dump in whatever I plan to run in the future? I like synthetic, since these things don't leak, but with less than 100 miles, I'm afraid the break-in period will be affected by the extra slipperiness of the synthetic stuff. Maybe some plain ol' dino oil for the first couple changes, then synth? Oh, yeah... Here's a pic. Not a great shot, but you get the idea. Once again, thank you for your time and wisdom. Bert
  4. We got this bike in late December, and got it ready to ride by Jan.1. Got it with 28 miles, now it has 3500 miles. So far I have changed engine oil 3 times. The first was when we got it, second at 700 miles, then at 3000 to Shell T6 full synthetic. At 3K I also went to shell synthetic gear lube out back. It seems to me that even before the switch to synthetic oils, I could feel the Venture loosen up. I think I actually felt it "break in". At first it felt kind of tight, and after I revved it, the rpms would drop back too soon. Now it feels like the sky's the limit with engine speed. Has anyone else noticed this "loosening up"? What a great feeling. Man, this thing flies.
  5. hi all I found this stuff at advanced auto vavoline synthetic brake fluid dot 3&4 ? do you think it good for the clutch on 83 venture. its good price about 6 bucks for a quart bottle. but i never seen brake fluid marked 3 and 4 . your thoughts???
  6. Riding in the Southern USA and going to change my Clutch Fluid, all I notice us DOT 4 full Synthetic Fluid, is this the proper fluid to use? I hadn't noticed in Canada if it was fully Synthetic or not.
  7. I know, I know, another "oil" thread... Looking to use some synthetic oil this time around when I perform my oil change on the 85 this spring. What are the better brands to chose from? Which are the ones I should stay away from? Thanks, Bill
  8. Is Castrol 75-90 synthetic oil good for the rearend on my RSV? I don't have an owner's manual but I think that it should work ok.....?? Thanks........
  9. I picked up the Oil this morning at Walmart for a nice price. It is Synthetic and the oil grade is recommended for our Venture as stated on the sticker in the trunk. T5 also has JASO certifications listed in the back of the container, but it does says Energy Conserving in front of the label. Has anybody used this in their Venture?
  10. Wal-Mart - $13.69 Canadian Tire - $15.99 Here in Ontario, it's a lot cheaper to buy Mobil 1 Synthetic MX-4T at Wally World....quite a significant difference in fact. I like the Mobil 1 oil, and this is the cheapest that I've been able to get it here. Not sure about pricing in the USA, but that's what we're paying here. gunk:think:
  11. I have a knock coming from the lower end of the engine, on the right side, in the water pump area. It's usually heard at idle and up to around 1500 rpm. I found some other threads about a similar problem, it has been recommended to sync the carbs, I checked them and they are spot on. I have fresh Rotella synthetic in it with no change. The coolant is full as well. Is it possible that the pump needs rebuilt? The motor has 70k miles. I'm really concerned about the knock, I just bought the bike and don't want to rebuild the motor already. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Briley.
  12. Would 47,000 on a '99 be too many miles to switch over to MC Synthetic oil? Whacha think??
  13. I hate to do this, but here we go on another synthetic oil jag: So I took my new '09 RSTD to the dealer for the first service (they are also putting on the Flanders bars and lines but that is for another thread) So I asked the service guy if they could put synthetic oil in when they change the oil. He said they don't like to do that and went on a discussion on how it causes the clutch to slip and on "R6 motorcycles causes a ticking noise that sounds like the engine is coming apart". He told me if I insist they will do that but they don't like to because of all of the complaints. Plus he intimated that if I put synthetic in they would have to tear down the engine to find the problems it will cause and it will only be fixed by putting regular oil in. Any way I swear by synthetic, I have always used Mobil 1 in all my vehicles. I am planning on using Amsoil. I will probably go a few hundred miles on this oil then change it to the amsoil. Gentlemen commense lobbing the bombs. David
  14. The full synthetic oil? I just changed the oil I could not find any of the recommended around here so I went with the synthetic 10-40 Mobil 1 4 cycle motor oil, did I screw up?
  15. My troubles began about a month ago when I had an oil change and decided to try a synthetic by using Mobile 1 20w-50. My whine (which really didn't bother me) turned into a scream. I talked with the service manager and he grudgingly agreed to get me an "I" basket and we both agreed on going back to Dino. The factory tech suggested Yamalube (surprise) 20w-50. When I first drove the bike it seemed to be considerably better-the scream back to a whine and at a different pitch. A 100 miles later the whine is getting louder and so I decide to try Rotella 15w-40 and major difference. I'm beginning to believe it's the oil viscosity and will try 10w-30 at the next oil change (I've had 3 oil changes in the last 200 miles). It may not be just the basket but also viscosity. For the 1st 4000 miles I was using Yamalube 10w-40 and the whine didn't bother me. I had thought my troubles began when I went to synthetic, but I now believe it was because of the change to 20w-50. After I enjoy my bike again for a while, I may try synthetic again but at no higher than 40 weight-I think Amsoil makes a 10w-30. Something to think about!
  16. Just had my oil changed and went with synthetic (Mobile1 20-40). After 200 miles the whine is noticeably worse. I thought that the syn might actually help quiet the clutch basket (I assume that's where the whine originates?), but it seems the opposite has happened. Has this happened to anyone else? My new slip-ons don't begin to compensate for the increase in whine. Any ideas? Is my only choice to go back to Dino? Thanks!
  17. I have been using Rotella T 5W-40 Synthetic (Blue Bottle) in the past. I went to Walmart, Fleet Farm, and local auto stores but all I can get now is the Rotella T6 5W-40 Synthetic. The T6 has API Service CJ-4/SM where as the T has API Service CI-4/SL in the circular API logo. Has anyone used the T6 oil? Thanks Zeke
  18. I am set to change my oil and filter and the final drive gear oil. I bought Valvoline SAE 10W30 (4 qts) and gear oil Valvoline Synthetic. I know we can use GL3, GL4, or GL5 grade gear oil that is SAE 80 as stated by the 'MOM'. I got the Valvoline Synthetic Gear oil but it is SAE 80W90, GL5 instead if just saying SAE 80. Is this ok to use on mt '07 Venture?
  19. Please forgive me, I'm not wanting to start another "oil" preference thread... I've acquired my uncle's 96 RS, and figured I change the oil... Unfortunately he doesn' have the owner's manual, so I just want a quickie "how-to" to change the oil. Also, it only has 4400 miles (not 44,000), and should I put full synthetic? What weight? I typically use full synthetic in my sportbikes & motocross bikes. Thanks!
  20. Hey everyone and especially First Gen Guru's, Has anyone had any experience using synthetic oils in older bikes? I ask because last year I switched to Mobiles synthetic 10k oil in my cars and saw a noticeably cooling operating temperature and a slight increase in MPG. This got me thinking about trying it in my '83 Venture but Im hesitant to leap before asking around. I dont put more than 5 - 7k miles a year on the bike so its not reducing how often I change the oil that appeals to me, rather Im interested in running the bike a little cooler and hopefully squeezing a few more miles out of each tank. Any opinions? GeorgeoftheJungle p.s. sorry for the double post, I accidentally stuck this in "watering hole" too.

  22. Ok.. I've finally went the synthetic way on this last oil change.. AMSOIL 10W40 Synthetic.. no additives etc.. Not many choices around here as to what to use, Yamaha dealership recommended Kawasaki Synthetic Oil.. meh.. AMSOIL was cheaper, I had used it before in my VStar with good results.. Has anyone ever used Royal Purple Synthetic Oil? It's hard to get around here but I may be able to get a decent deal on a couple of cases, but not sure if it's suitable for the RSV as it's mostly for high performance engines.. It would end up being cheaper than anything else I can get around here.. Anyone have good or bad to say about Royal Purple?? Thanks in Advance.
  23. I'm getting ready to put refill my rear end oil. I bought Lucas 75W-90 synthetic that says it exceeds service level GL5. Will this work ok?
  24. Last Friday I changed out my Amsoil synthetic 10w40 oil and put in Amsoil synthetic 20w50. Thought maybe it would quieten the engine and the clutch whine. Around here, that oil costs $19.95/litre and it takes almost 4 litres with a new filter so, all tolled with taxes it came to $101 and change. To my dismay, the engine actually seemed noisier and the whine louder. I also noticed the temps on the gauge getting up to between 220 & 230. Yesterday morning I decided to go get some Shell Rotella T (non synthetic). I got the 15w40. I'm happy to report that even though I virtually wasted $100 on the Amsoil, the engine is quieter, the clutch whine is quieter, and the temps are sticking close to 210-215 on the gauge after a couple days running around the city in 30 degree celcius weather.. I drained the Amsoil back into the containers and kept it for some other future use. Think I'll be sticking with the Rotella T.
  25. I'm currently using Amsoil in my 09 RSV. I'm going to be changing the oil in a couple of weeks. Should I stick with Amsoil or move to another synthetic? Any harm in changing from Amsoil to another type of Synthetic (Mobil-1??).
