  1. This is in response to snaggletooth's post earlier about his side stand bolt breaking. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=48307 I started a new thread so people might look at it that had already viewed his. As was noted in previous post, the undercut on the shoulder bolt is deep. The threads are 10 mm on the shoulder bolt and the undercut is about 7.90 mm. This is about 20% of the bolts threaded diameter that has been removed. The shoulder portion of the bolt is 12 mm. I used a grade 10.9, 12 mm x 1.75 mm x 60 mm long partially threaded hex head bolt, a grade 10.9 hex head nut and a standard grade jam nut (hardware didn't have grade 10.9 jam nuts).Grade 10.9 metric is very close to an imperial grade 8. The hardware store had 12 mm x 1.50 mm bolts, but the unthreaded portion was a smaller diameter than the 1.75 mm. I would have rather had the finer threads. I used the 60 mm length because the unthreaded portion of this bolt was just the length that was required to pass through the front and back wings of the side stand. I did not want threads in that area, due to the threads would quickly wear down in diameter and increase play in side stand. The shoulder on the hex bolt measured 11.50 mm, just slightly smaller than the existing shoulder bolt by about .005". I cut the shoulder bolt to roughly 45 mm (1.75") long. Then drilled out the threaded portion of the kickstand with a 15/32" drill. This gave a very snug fit for the unthreaded portion of the new bolt. The drilled hole in the back wing is still a smaller diameter than the existing hole in the front wing of the side stand, so I do not feel it weakened the overall assembly. Replaced the side stand. I used blue loctite on threads. Tightened hardened hex bolt up until there was minimal play in the end of side stand, then ran jam nut up against hex nut. Cost was under $5.00 and took less than an hour including parts run. Comparison of new bolt & existing shoulder bolt. Back wing of side stand prior to drilling Stack-up of new fasteners after cutting hex bolt to length. Picture of side stand prior to spring being reinstalled. Gary
  2. get rid of the red hot poker sticking in my back between my shoulder blades after about 200 miles. Today I rode and at about 70 miles it came. . . . Tim
  3. I noticed that my 91 VR, elbow to shoulder wind buffering was quite excessive compared to the 2012 Goldwing that I test rode this weekend. I have the Clearview (Tallest & Widest) shield with the vent. Any my vent was open. Any suggestions as to how I might remedy this?
  4. I just got a call from my Dr after the latest MRI. "Your shoulder is being held together by a thread of muscle" surgery ASAP. It looks like my 2000 mm venture #222 will be for sale soon :crying: Lets hope by the time I can ride a big bike again there will be an upgrade Venture with Vmax based engine. Rod
  5. I had my stitches taken out today and the Dr said it was healing good and my ribs are doing good. I start rehab Monday but the plate in my shoulder is still a little uncomfortable. Tom
  6. I just got back from the Orthopaedic surgeon and now I have to go in Fri morning to have a plate put in my shoulder since it is not healing right, my right shoulder has dropped an inch and is getting worse. My day just keeps getting better now I may have to quit my job to get my money out of retirement to pay my mortgage and keep my house. So riding is not on the top of my list but I will not stop as soon as I am better I will buy another bike. TOM
  7. We went for a ride earlier today to meet our son and family for lunch. Decided to take the trike...mistake? About 30 minutes into the ride, I feel something hit my shoulder...a rock? a bug? Whatever it was, it really hurt...I reached up to rub my shoulder and THWACK! hit again! on my finger...then another finger started stinging..OMG!! STINGING!!! A BEE WAS CAUGHT IN MY SHIRT STINGING THE CRAP OUT OF ME!! I am now screaming bloody murder, twisting in the seat, begging Don to pull over, tearing at my shirt to get the bee out...all I can say is...KODAK MOMENT MISSED!!! finally got pulled over (according to Don, you can't just pull over anywhere) and surveyed the damage. Good thing I am not allergic to the dang things but boy did it hurt! Had some swelling but was basically ok. Made it to lunch and then home. What a wonderful Father's Day Don is having...LOLOL
  8. About 90 miles into the ride back to Houston from the Rockport Maintenance Day, Roxie suffered a catastrophic failure. I heard a loud clunk and felt her die. I pulled the clutch, and emergency stopped on the right shoulder. That was kind of exciting, as Dave P./Just Foolin' Around and I were passing cars and fellow VentureRiders. I turned off the power as Roxie spilled out oil. In fact, I'd left a long trail of oil as I made it to the shoulder. I am thankful for my friends, who came to a stop, and who u-turned to come back for me. We had quite a party there on the freeway shoulder. Kreg/Kbay went and got his trailer, and returned to carry me home. It seems to me that she'd thrown a rod. At least that's what we called it when I turned wrenches in High School. I'm not sure what they call it now, or even if that is accurate on a second gen engine. It looks like she lost most of her oil, and there was coolant in the puddle as well. The oil seems to have come out above the front motor mount. My warranty expires in April, and I am glad it happened now, and when surrounded by friends. Is there any way this is not covered by the warranty? I certainly have not heard of a well-maintained Venture engine dying like this. I only have 55,000 miles on her. 10. Gonna be selling my motorcycle trailer. Thought I might use it, but witht he bike gone, the more I think about it the more I realize I wont. Its an Americas Best, http://www.americasbesttrailers.com/ AMT XL Diamond. I have had it two riding seasons. Always stored in the garage. Tires good. Trailer just has a little Aluminum oxidation, but a good wax would probably clear that up. Just can't do that with my shoulder. I would like $1500 for it. I would be willing to meet someone with it to save a portion of their drive. PM, email, or call my cell listed on the forum. Thanks,
  11. Many of us have no choice but to travel the Highways and when you encounter such a delay in traffic patterns on highways such a road construction or accidents, getting trapped, then engine/clutch getting extremely hot, personal heat fatigue , etc........."Do you ride the shoulder ?". Please , I'm asking your opinion to a direct question, NOT "I only ride the back roads ,blah , blah , blah..............! ". Coming back from vacation, Becky and I encountered numerous highway congestion due to traffic accidents to road constructions. Yes we took mainly back roads for scenery and piece of mind. One instance back on the Highway, It was HOT ! Suddenly traffic backed up for over 10 miles, all traffic converted to one lane near end. No explanation was given over the CB from oncoming CBer's from the opposite direction. I was contemplating driving the shoulder of the road to get the wind in our face and cool the scoot. Scoot was getting hot as we were , if not hotter. I hesitated pulling into the shoulder due to maybe some cager might get mad and either swerve into us or open their passenger car door on us. While thinking about it , 4 MC (I think the were 1%'rs) came riding by in the shoulder. So I followed on in line, lagging back about 50 yards or so. Shoulder was clean with a few baby gators and a few beer cans. They weren't mine either.................... 5 miles from where we were , we hit an exit and took the back roads till we got home. I know myself if I were in my cage sitting in line for my turn and another cage came by in the shoulder (other than an emergency vehicle) , I would be pi$$ed. But a MC, I would be more forgiving knowing the extra stress we encounter. So again I ask , "Would you drive the shoulder?" BEER30
  12. "Brown Sugar" has decided to start leaking pretty bad on valve covers. mostly rear one. I'm going to try snugging them down but that can cause them to get worse. I know they have a shoulder on these bolt so easy does it. Question is which 2nd gen gasket is the easy to install one? Any of them? Or certain year.
  13. Here's a bit of an update for those who might remember me. Last year about this time I ruptured a bicep tendon in my left arm at work. Due to surgery and recovery, there was no riding allowed for me. This year I am having trouble with my right shoulder. My family doctor says it was probably caused by compensating for the other arm...the worker's comp people don't see it that way. So, the constant pain in my shoulder coupled with my very patient girlfriend becoming less patient about me being in NY while she is in SC, forces me to make the very difficult decision to sell the Venture. I need to gather info and photos for the classifieds section, but I figured I'd o a quick overview here, mostly to garner sympathy, but also to kind of ease into the process and see who might be interested. This is really killing me, but here goes. 1989 Yamaha Venture Royale, 2 tone blue. not sure of exact mileage, but I will get that info. I put around 6000 trouble free miles on it over the two years I was able to ride it. The left side fairing was banged up by the previous owner and it was missing a side cover when I got it. I have collected most of the replacement pieces, but I have not had the time or money to paint and install them. There are also some Yama-line pieces that i bought as NOS a couple of years ago, I think I have a few more still in the packaging. Whatever I do have will go with the bike. I have no desire to part this out . I promise to have more details properly placed in the classified section in a day or two.
  14. Well I wrecked the RSV yesterday. Truck pulled out in front of me and I had to drop it. Missed the truck, but he drove off anyway. Plenty of witnesses though, but none got a license plate. It tore up the whole right side of the bike. Me, I went over the handle bars and landed on the right side of my helmet and my right shoulder. Stayed alert through the whole thing. I ended up breaking my scapula (shoulder blade) and my number 4 rib. In the process of doing this, it caused me to have a partial collapse of my right lung. Spent the night in the hospital. My lung inflated on its own without surgery, thank goodness and the rest will just take time to heal. Went and checked out the bike today. She fired up, but didn't sound good. It would idle and I could give it some gas, but it sounded a little sick. Just waiting to see what the insurance says about it before making any decisions. Anyway, stay safe and be alert out there.
  15. I've been getting a sharp pain in my shoulder after I ride for a couple of hours. It starts out feeling like someone is stabbing me with an ice pick in the area marked with an X 0n the silhouette below. I just started riding again after 25 years without a bike. I really thought I would work through it after a while, but it just seems to be getting worse. My wife and I were on the bike for 6 hours yesterday and the pain was unbearable. I've tried adjusting the bars up and down and it hasn't helped. After a while it spreads up into my neck and makes it hard to turn my head to my right. I've read posts where others have had a similar problem. I'm curious if anyone has had success in fixing the problem. I'm willing to try about anything.
  16. Just got a note from Jack's wife - Bev - updating their situation. Would ask everyone to keep both in their thoughts. "Just thought I should tell you that we are ok in case you hear otherwise thru the grapevine. We were on our way to meet up with Gregg and Sandy yesterday morning to head to Laughlin, when a lady pulled out in front of us. Jack has always been very cautious so he had stomped on the brakes & slowed way down before we hit her. Our front tire hit her front tire & turned the bike sideways. Jacks' right shoulder hit her drivers window and shattered the window, and separated his shoulder. Otherwise he is fine. I ended up on my back next to the rear tire of the car. Don't remember getting there, but don't think I blacked out at all. There were some really nice witnesses there who helped us a lot until the ambulance arrived. I was held still so I wouldn't move my neck, really couldn't see Jack, but knew he was talking and trying to find out how I was. And I also heard him say he thought he had busted his shoulder, he could hear it grinding. Took us to the hospital & fortunately Gregg and Sandy came looking for us & found us before the ambulance took us away. They got all of our things off of the bike & then followed us to the hospital, stayed with us until we were released & brought us home. They are such great friends! Anyway, I just seemed to be bruised up, except today I have noticed that my left knee is not happy, swollen & hurts to bend. Gonna go have that looked at soon. So, Jack got a call from Ryan (Visalia guy) last night & I guess the rumor in Laughlin was that we crashed in the middle of the desert (only 40 miles from home) and that we were airlifted to the hospital (I guess if you call a gurney airlifting....). Sounds sort of like the little deer we almost hit that became a moose before the night was over when we rode with a Harley group! So, Jack has an appointment on the first with a real good ortho dr. We are also looking forward to the new Venture this lady will be buying us! " Get well, soon, guys - and what color is the new Venture going to be?
