  1. My oldest daughter, biker name is Awahoo, who is a School Teacher now out near Sacramento CA hasnt always been a full grown woman.. A number of years ago (yesterday in my mind) her and I were on a bike trip out west.. We were riding a 1984 Blonde Royale who the kids named "Beeg" (Beeg's Blonde side covers can been seen on our current bike "Tweeks").. We had camped out in Badlands of South Dakota the night before, packed up and went looking for breakfast.. The west end of the Badlands pretty much emptys out into a place many of you have heard of, a place called Wall Drug.. We drifted into Wall Drug, found breakfast and got to goofing off in one of their many "Cowboy and Indian" tourist area.. I lost track of her for few minutes so, of course, I went looking for her.. I found Awahoo standing next to one of those Music Displays with a set of ear phone muffs on, standing there listening to a song with tears running down her cheeks.. I walked over to see why she was crying.. She handed me the ear phones and said "listen to this Dad,, they wrote this song about you".. Here is what she was listening to: When we left Wall Drug and headed toward the Black Hills a trail of water followed our bike and it wasnt coming from a leaking water pump!!
  2. The following description of my exhaust pipe problem encountered during the first week of our recent five week trip and my emergency repair was originally posted in my thread "Our Venture West". It has been over 10,000 km since I did this emergency fix and it has worked so well and without any exhaust leak that I don't plan on any further repair. While traveling along the Yellowhead Trail through Saskatchewan on our recent trip west, my exhaust noise got louder and still louder again after part of the chrome heat shield cover to the exhaust pipe broke away. The exhaust pipe from the collector had broken loose from the muffler and the muffler was left hanging by one bolt with no support. The end of the exhaust pipe was rusted and broken away so badly that it couldn't be reconnected to the muffler. Truly an "Oh Sh--" moment that could have ruined our trip west. The first picture shows the exhaust pipe after I removed the muffler. I got lucky as the next town had a Canadian Tire Store (open on Sunday) where I bought an exhaust pipe coupler designed to reduce pipe size and some aluminum duct tape. After removing the original clamp at the mouth of the muffler and wrapping both the front few inches of the muffler and the last few inches of the exhaust pipe with the aluminum duct tape for a tight fit, I slid the coupler over the muffler and the exhaust pipe and bolted my muffler back in place. To my surprise, there is no exhaust leak and I think the joint is as strong as original. I would bet that mine isn't the only first gen with a wore out exhaust pipe under the chrome cover. 3. Just wanted to see if anyone else is planning on heading West after the 2013 International. I know Leo3Wheel (Leo, NJ - '09 Hannigan) is planning on heading West as well, possibly Carbon-One (Larry, Michigan - '09 Hannigan) too. For us, we don't have a firm route yet. Only destination we have to make is Jack Fish Lake, Saskatchewan on the 15th of August. Between the International and August 15 we are free spirits. We aren't looking for mileage and would prefer to "smell the flowers" along the way, see the sights, probably camping for the most part. Anyone else considering a Western vacation (or headed West to get home) after the International? If anyone is headed West... post your general plans or destination and lets see if we can piece something together. Or if you live West of the International and want visitors....
  4. Anyone that is interested in a biker friendly spot going donw Hwy 36 I can highly recommend West Of The Brazos. Its a great little joint in Damon Texas http://www.westofthebrazos.com/. Good little stop if your cruising down to Freeport for the day. I love their burgers and a cold beer! Check em out next time you head out that way!
  5. We got up early this morning to go to early church, so we could go for possibly the last ride of 2012. We headed toward Indiana on the back roads, went to Brookville Lake first, then road to Liberty, Indiana and west of there to Connersville. Left there and road on 121 to catch route 52 to get back to West Harrison to get to our daughters for dinner. It was really windy. Supposed to be 68 out but with the sun covered with clouds and the wind blowing strong, we wore our leathers. I wound up put on my fleece face cover to keep the wind from blowing on my face. All and all though it was really nice to get to go on a nice long ride. The bike ran great. Nothing interesting to say, just sayin! Yama Mama
  6. This is just a feeler to see how many VR members from the west coast.... Vancouver, Washington, Oregon, NorCal, SoCal, Nev, Arizona would be interested in doing a 'weekend' Venture West V in 2012. No specific place or dates, just would like to know of any interest at this time. I'll try to do a poll... did one a long time ago but can't remember exactely how I did it.... Meanwhile your post will work.
  7. They are really building up the possibilities of winds/rain/damage for this coming storm. The NJ Governor just did a press conference (sounds like a nice guy btw). For members on the East coast take care the next couple days. Sounds like it will hit near New Jersey and then head North West and come as far as Toronto. I know the forecast/predictions are usually worse than what we get but better to be safe rather than dead or injured.
  8. Tomorrow (Friday) morning, Barb and I are heading on another trip. First off, we'll be heading down to south of Nashville to watch our grandson quarterback his grade school football team. (ScarryLarry---it's the weekend again, and I suppose you're busy.) We'll visit there, and then Sunday afternoon head back up to near Cairo, IL and meet our friends at their house (they ride a '12 Wing). Monday morning the 4 of us will head west. We're heading to Albuquerque by Oct. 6 so we can see the start of the Balloon Fiesta, but seeing that we have some 'extra' time, we plan on heading for Colorado Springs and doing some riding in southwest Colorado. I'd like to go up on Pike's Peak, if the weather is cooperating---I've head that they have the road completely paved now. It's been at least 15 years since we've been in this area, so maybe we'll visit Cripple Creek on the way west, and then ride over Wolf Creek Pass. After we get to Albuquerque, we're thinking of riding south and doing some site seeing there. I'd kind of like to see Roswell. Our friends have to be home by the 11th, so our route back home is still unplanned. The weather looks good now, so we should have a great trip. Frank D.
  9. Looks like we're gonna have to head west Thursday instead of our eastern trip we had planned due to hurricane Isaac. The question I have is, how much performance decrease should I expect once we get into the mountains in Colorado, NM, Ut, and Ariz? We have been all over the Smoky's and Blue Ridges with the 6000ft peaks, and really didn't notice a decrease, however, I hear out west with the additional altitudes, and dryer air, there might be an issue. Like to know what to expect so I won't think there is something wrong with my ride. Thanks
  10. The last time I was on vacation was May of last year. I need a break. So, I spent the last 2 months planning a wonderful 2 week 4000 mile ride for my wife and I to begin this coming Friday, but, guess who's coming to dinner? ISAAC! We were going to ride through Tennessee, ride The Dragon, and several other fabulous roads in the Smokey Mtn's, then ride all the way to the Outer Banks and spend a few days. Then, head up to Gettysburg, back through WV, Kentucky, and home. I've been glued to the Weather Channel trying to get a read as to where Mr. Isaac is headed. Is it going more east, or more west? Well, I did a check while on my lunch today, and the freakin thing is now predicted after battering our friends to the south in La, and Ms, to head STRAIGHT AT US, dropping boat loads of rain and t-storms Thursday night, Friday, and Saturday. I've been mulling around the idea of leaving after work Thursday afternoon and ride as far as we can get going northeast toward Evansville In. to try and go around the top of it before it gets up that way. Not sure that's a good idea. the dang storm is so big it looks like it's going to sling t-storms full of rain all the way to NC for days. Also have serious thought's of changing everything and leaving Thursday afternoon and heading west to Okla, Tx, NM, Co, Ut, and Ariz. Hmmmm, what must I do.........
  11. Starting on Oct. 1st, Barb and I will be travelling with some friends, heading west from Illinois and ending up in Albuquerque in time for the Balloon Fiesta. Our daughter lives in Albuquerque, and we were out there last year for the Fiesta. We live in northern Illinois, and our friends live in the southern tip, so it'll probably be best for us to meet near St. Louis, and head west to Colorado Springs. I've already decided that I want to ride through Wolf Creek Pass (again), and then like C.W. Mcall says in the song, end up in downtown Pagosa Springs, and from there we'll travel down to Sante Fe, and into Albuquerque. Something else I'd like to do is to ride up Pikes Peak. Is this too late in the year to think of doing that on a bike, or is there a posibilty that the freshly paved road up will be snow free? Any other suggestions of things to do in south west Colorado? We went to Sante Fe & Los Alamos last year, but our friends have never stopped there, so that's a stop we'll take. Also in the plans are to ride south from Albuquerque and visit Roswell. Anybody know of anything else to see in New Mexico?? Frank D.
  12. We will be flying in to New York, then hiring a car [Chrysler Grand Caravan] to drive to Freebird's MD and do a little touring on the west coast, till it's time to go to Portland OR to get the trike. Can anyone recommend car hire companies where we would get the best deal e.g: unlimited miles ??
  13. One old man on a 2007 FJR. Left Houston at 02:50, Saturday morning. South on the beltway to IH10 west. Sun rise as I was leaving the west side of San Antonio. Boerne, Comfort, Kerrville, Junction, Sonora, Ozona, Ft. Stockton, Balmorhea, turn around and head back. Arrived home at 20:30 just as the sun was setting. 1115 miles, 17hrs 40min. Odometer reading was 47 miles higher than GPS. Bike ran great. You can really haul butt in west texas where the posted speed limit is 80mph. Hot (upper 90s) and dry in the desert. Corbin seat and Heli bar pull backs did their jobs. No sore body parts. Hydration using Camalbak 100oz insulated carrier. 50/50 water and Propel Zero. Drank a full 200 ozs (6 liters) and only stopped to pee once. Thought I would be pretty sore the next day but surprisingly not so much. Hands were a bit tired and sore but that was it. Need to replace my worn out gloves. I am pretty much ATGATT. I was trying out a new base layer from Cycle Gear called Heat Out. It is similar to the LD Comfort riding stuff but only about 20-30 bucks. Fits like a second skin and helps wick away perspiration and provides cooling. It works. I like it. Durability remains to be proven. Zipcode Dave was tracking me with a ham radio APRS program that worked pretty well. I will let him comment on that. It was a good ride. Next...
  14. I and 3 of my riding buddies are heading west again tomorrow. We're headed to Glacier National Park via Cody Wy and Chief Josepht Highway, Beartooth Pass and Red Lodge. Here is a link to our approximate route: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=209345560562245148088.0004c40c214cc5ab7ecae&msa=0 We'll be making the big loop in a counter clockwise direction. So if you see 3 Goldwings and a Tour Deluxe going down the road give us a shout or a wave. Dennis

  16. Just a note to let all of our members in the areas affected by the storms are safe and sound. I know that many were hit very hard, especially those in West Virgina and surrounding areas. Please check in when you can to let us know that you are OK.
  17. Hey All, Anyone in the GTA (west end) with a carb sync tool to loan?
  18. 4 lane divided hwy traveling west I'm in right lane cage in left lane behind me another cage pulls out from side street turning west. Traveling 70mph grabbed both brakes an signaled left but cage behind closing to fast and not enough room that I felt I could safely stop. So I grabbed some throttle and used what little room there was about 2' on the shoulder and passed on the right. I know that's not a good thing to do but my gut told me it was my only option. I had just read Dons post last night and another one the other day on panic stops and praticing them at 80mph. Anything else I could have done besides rearending the cage. Any constructive comments you won't offend me.
  19. We are leaving this weekend for our own "Venture West", departing from Toronto. My wife and I now have five weeks available so we hope to make it to the west coast. Have rode to the east coast a number of times but this is my first bike trip west. Plan to ride west mostly in Canada (eh) and back mostly in the US, likely by way of route 2 unless we also go to Yellowstone. Going north of Lake Huron and then through the Michigan UP before we turn north to Kenora/Winnipeg and then westward. Plan on spending some time in BC (Banff, Jasper, Kamloops, Kelowna areas). Will mostly motel but also do some camping. Hope to meet up with some fellow Venture Riders along the way and will invite your specific route and sightseeing suggestions as we go.

  22. Cody is great riding! Jan had to be back early to work on her and Carol's chili for the cook off so we had a short riding day. Even with that, we were able to ride Beartooth from east to west. Got some great pics: http://s470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/VR%20org%202011%20Rally%20-%20Day%201/ Tomorrow Yellowstone! Oh, and sorry Black Owl Dave
