I'm getting some miss fireing also, on hard acceleration, in 2nd and 3rd gear. But never happens under normal driveing. I will test again, and watch to see iff the Tach falls off , when the miss fire happens. Can't today though, pouring rain again :depressed:

Mechanic in Birmingham AL

Can you be more specific on the Source of the Leaking Fuel ???? Should not be to hard to pin point the fuel leak, ??? Several chunks of fuel line on top of those carbs, could be loose and leaking. If comeing from the Over flow on one carb, the obviously you need to check into the float valve operation of just that one carb. Sounds to me like your are almost there, as they say, don't give up now. Post a photo if you can of where the leak is comeing from :detective: -
Clutch friction plates
GeorgeS replied to Jimod's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On my 89, at 37,000 miles clutch started slipping, ( completly let loose ) I replaced it with the Barnett, Complete Disc's set, and Pressure plate. 87K, now on the bike, and absolutly NO clutch problems so far. Thats my 2 cents worth, for whatever its worth -
I think I would start over with the three proceedures from the Manual. Especially the Basic Throttle cable adjustment. 1. Throttle cable Basic Adjustment proceedure, 2. Basic idle speed adjust 3. Resync the carbs, Make sure you have some amount of Slack in the cable, as called out in the manual. Then back out All 3 Sync Screws, to the point of " Just Makeing Contact " with the Linkage assembly, Then --- hook up your Vaccum gauge tool, and Redo the Sync proceedure. See chapter Two of the manuel . I would also suspect some Intake Manifold leaks, or missadjustment of the Clamps above and below the Carbs !! To touch one other point, ( have you been test rideing the bike, Without the air cleaner, and Cover for the air cleaner installed ???? ) Just in case you are not aware, these bikes run like CRAP, without the cover installed on the Air Cleaner ( I know everybody knows that, but just in case :whistling:0

My dad was on a Battle ship, dureing the height of the Kamakazi Attacks, about a 2 week period. He told me that late at nite he would get a break from the Engine Rooms and go up on deck just to watch the Show !! ALL, the guns fireing at Incomeing Aircraft !! What a show, I would like to go back and see that. He said for about 2 weeks, they ran full speed, 24 hours a day, running cover for the Carriers, and the incomeing planes were constant. What a show, he said it was !!!

Starter Clutch Removal
GeorgeS replied to kevin5549's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The factory actually installs a small plastic explosive charge in a hidden compartment, in that clutch assembly. Too small to actually see, however its very effective ------ -
Just saw on Local TV station Seattle, Two guys in a small fishing boat, on the Columbia River ( someplace between Portland Or. and the Pacific Ocean ) were minding there own bussiness, just fishing . ( I assume for salmon ) And guess what ?? A Sea Lion, takes there Bait !!!!!!! Another near by boat, videoed the event, so its apparently On the record book !!! For all you Bull Head fishermen out there, Take heed !!!! Consider the possibilities, of have a Sea Lion, as the " Power Source " for your 12 foot fishing boat !!!! :080402gudl_prv::cool10:

Isn't it true, that there were changes in the upper gear ratio's of the 2nd gen bikes, from the 1st year of production, up to the present ??? If so, then the V-Max mod, might have different effects, depending on what year 2nd gen you own. My thinking here is that the mod would be a larger improvement, in driveability, for the later year 2nd gen models. Or am I way out in left field here ???

I changed rear tire yesterday, which I put a bottle of ride on in , Aug, of 2008. So, about 3 1/2 years, and 17,600 miles. (( an E3 )) Anyway, The residue was not to bad, 90 percent of it washed off with a Garden Hose. I went over the rim with a fine rotary wire brush, took about 10 min to clean it up. New tire installed, and I will put in another bottle of " Ride On "

No back brakes
GeorgeS replied to chrislemon's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Do you have a service manual ??? If not. From Home page, down left side, see, " VR Tech " Click on that. and find the Link to the Service manual for the 2nd gen bikes, You can find the brake section, all the information you need is there. However it sounds. like you just need to Bleed the Brakes, These systems are not easy to get all the air out the systems, A tool, call the " My T Vac " tool is very usefull for bleeding out the brake systems on these bikes. Also, its good to use "Synthectic Brake Fluid " Do not use the old DOT-3 stuff. Basicly, on the rear, and left front, you need to bleed the back, then the front, then the back then the front , maby several times to get the air out. It helps to have a Second set of hands -
Are you sure the throttle cable basic adjustments are correct, and the Sync Screws, are set so that All 4 throttle plates are fully closed, Check pull cable, for some slack -- Now adjust master idle, and all three Sync screws, to they are Just makeing Contact to linkage.

High idle, help!
GeorgeS replied to LIV2RIDENMI's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Most likley you are going to have to get the tool, to do the Carb Sync Proceedure. First thing to check is, #2 throttle plate, make sure its going from " full closed " to " full open " Check the pull cable, make sure it has some Slack ( about 1/16 to 1/8 inch ) before the plate starts to open. (( see service manual page 2 - 14, " Throttle Cable Adjustment " proceedure steps 1 thru 8 " )) Now check the other three plates. Make sure they are all in the same position, ( full closed ) Check the Service Manual, for above adjust ment proceedure, its all called out there. Then go on to the Carb Syncing proceedure. ( also in the manual ) (( see service manual page 2-12 to 2 - 14 )) Be sure to get the Cables, adjusted properly first, with the slack adjustment, to #2 carb, ( the master ) THEN, go onto doing the Sync proceedure of the other three. Most likly, sombody has been " Messing With "" the three SYNC Screw, and one or more of them is " Way Out of Wack " As they say. This is very common on these bikes, Manual is avialable on this web site, if you do not have one, ( See VR Tech, left side menu from Home page ) -
Yesterday I pulled into Yamaha dealer in Olympia, Wa. An older gentleman, was just getting onto his FJ to pull out of the parking lot. The FJ was one of the first years, for the model. My first question to him, was " How many mile on it ?? " and have you had any mechanical problems. His answer's were, 68.000 miles, and " No " problems, just Oil changes, and new tire replacements. !! Also, I asked about the seat comfort factory. His answer, was a trip with the wife on the back to Los Angeles, and back, he had no complaints. The FJ is still on my list of possible replacement bikes, I also spent a few minutes looking at the new Yamaha, Tenera On Off Road bike. ( did I spell that correctly ? ) It seemed to be a LARGER Bike, in real life, then looking at it in the magazine photo's. Pretty Impressive looking machine.

See: Chapter 3 in Service Manual. Page: 3 - 81, for photo of all the parts breakdown. Print out the page, to work from if you don't have a service manuel. ( Go to VR-Tech, on home page, to get to the Service Manuals on this web site ) Whatever tools, you need, Buy them. Forget about the toolkit. You will need Real Tools. Metric--- It the Canister, is burned out, there is a guy who sells a hombrew, fabriciated Replacement for the canister. (( chamber )) on page 3-81 Cost is on par with a new Yamaha canister, if its needed.

Did you do the installation, or did you have sombody else do it ?? From the photo, I cannot identify, if the washer, is actually installed. Lots of folks, have had trouble with the Washer,

http://www.stopngo.com/products/Standard-model-%252d-Tire-Plugger.html Good tool to carry on trips. It works. However, I would still be leary about continuing to use that tire. If you plug it, I would also, put in a container of " Ride On " Sealant. http://www.ride-on.com/motorcycle-formula-mot.html

Do you have the--- Washer, ----Installed?? Goes between the Head of the Axe, and the brake hub. See: Page, 6-6 of service manual .

Will the conversation ever end ???????? Anyway, my 2 cents worth, is they simply don't have enough power, and they just cost to much !!

brake pedal wont come back up!
GeorgeS replied to reddevilmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Go to the IPC, Web Site, " Yamaha Motorcycles " google search. Pull up parts , IPC, go to the section, " Stand - Footrest " See: Item # 51 " Spring Torsion " ( not available ) Is it installed on your bike ??? If not, did you loose it ??? upon dissassembly ?? It might be laying on your garage floor someplace. Probably rolled under the water heater !!! :detective: -
brake pedal wont come back up!
GeorgeS replied to reddevilmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, maby the Linkage itself is binding. Was it working OK before you remove the cylinder for overhaul ? Is the Return Spring Installed ??? Try some " Never Seize " on the two Shafts. Pedal, and the Shaft that goes thru the Frame. Make sure not binding on the two shafts. -
brake pedal wont come back up!
GeorgeS replied to reddevilmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Do you mean the Pedal is binding mechanically ?? Or do you mean the rear brake is Locking up" . Have you Left the Fluid Level about 1/2 inch below the filler port to allow for Heat Expansion, of the brake fluid " IF--- You completly Fill the Rear Resovoiour, with fluid, Heat from the rear exhaust pipe , will expand the fluid , and the rear brakes will lock up !! -
If the unit had been operating, with 12V applied, and No resistor Installed --- The board is most likley " fried " Eaisest, and cheapest fix, is to try to find another Instrument panel from a salvage bike. Swap the boards. Also, you will end up with an extra set of Speedometer, and Tach, if in future you need them.
