Accessory Power?
GeorgeS replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I would say, one set of Running lights, ( 35 watt bulbs ) Or, Electric Vest and chaps. Or, 2 elect vests for driver and passenger. The alternator puts out about 30 Amps. If your running a lot of short trips, maby less, then keep a trickle charger hooked up. If you install an AGM Dry Cell type battery, you can get bye with a larger current darw. ( for shorter parts of the ride ) If you are useing the electic heated clothing, its advisable to turn OFF, any running lights. But if running a couple of hours after dark, with Vests, don't worry about it. If you are haveing trouble, switch to an AGM Battery, and check out your charging voltage, make sure its up to spec's. ( at least 13.8 chargeing level )- 4 replies

On an 84 model, if the diaphrams have never been replaced. Then you need new ones. I replaced them on my 89 back about 7 years ago. Rubber starting to deterioate. Check the tamper proof Screw, ( one on each diaphrame cover ) If never removed, then you most likley need new diaphrams.

YES!, remove the lower bolt on this cover, and you will get another 1/4 qt of oil to drain, and there is at least 1/4 qt. in the oil filter !!

Over the years I have had , One, Rear tire, " cupped " . And one front that wore excessivly on " both " sides, not the center. However, After 83K on that bike, and Several tire changes, I have noted that all the other tires fitted to this bike, Did Not wear unevenly. One other bike in the past that I ran about 49K, Never showed any of these signs. So, at this point, I have to blame it on the tire itself, and that was only one, rear, and one front. ????? So, I really don't know what to think or believe about all of this, other then to blame it on tire design, materials, or the mfg. OR, wether or not the wife is mad at me for something !!! Who knows ???? I would be more inclined to think the cause is frame missalignment.

See block diagram pager 7-11 Note item #72 a Condensor ( capacitory ) its connected to the Red wire output of the Regulator that goes to the ignition switch. Mine is mounted on the right side of bike just under the Seat. Its a small black plastic looking item . OK, Condensors have a very high resistance across them. BUT, they do go short, or can also be in some state of good, and bad. Find the Capacitor, follow the wires from it to a pull apart plug and disconnect it. Might be the current draw problem. If dissconnected, it will not effect anything. Its just there as a Filter a noise filter for the radio. One other item, you mentiond the charge voltage is above 12V --- It should be higher then 13.5. About 13.8 is considered normal !! At about 2000 RPM you DC on the Battery should read at least 13.8V DC.

Reflectors to LEDs (with turn signals)
GeorgeS replied to Motorpig's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Its not really advisable to mess with the OEM Turn signal system. Most folks who try this just cause trouble. If you are going to wire up New Marker ( running lights ) then its best to run all of the NEW lights thru a NEW In-Line fuse. To a the left side of the Fuse panel. The point were voltage is on and off with the Ignition key. This way if you new lights cause any problems, at least the original lighting is not effected. And run the ground for the new lights to a seperate source. -
I have one, never used it, ( Knock on wood ) Always carry it on the bike. Try the camping supplies section of local Wal Mart, K-Mart, whatever you have. Or maby the local friendly drug store. Lots of them avialable. I guess bigger is better.

Intermittent No Start Issue

What are the Symptoms ?? Give us the rundown, might be some good ideas here -
Anyone had a cooling fan fail?
GeorgeS replied to Grisolm1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
that plug at the sensor has a tendancy to come loose. Might just be bad electical contact at the pins of the sensor. -
Basicly, the 3 Phase AC voltage readings, should all 3 be about the same. They will vary with engine RPM changes. The main thing here is that they should be withing + or - 1 volt AC. If one of the 3 is substantially lower then there is a problem with one of the 3 phase's of the stator. You can get the Pin accessory for your volt meter probes, at Radio Shack, and stick thru the insulation on the wires to take the readings. Also be sure to carefully inspect the Plugs, for burn damage to the pins
-
Get the new one, ---- Its a considerable amount of work, not worth risking haveing to do it twice. Be sure to carefuly Inspect the Pins, inside the plug at the R/R Unit, for any sign of burn damage. I know of at least one person who had to dissenble the plug to find the damage, and replace the pins.

Just wondering, if a 1st gen rear shock can be used on a 2nd Gen. ???

Well, 4 pages, I just have to make a comment. They just cost to much !! A motorcycle just ain't worth that much money !! 35K MSRP for an Ultra Glide ?? Jezzzz, I can buy a New RSV for that, and still have enough left to take a luxurey , 3 week trip around the world via a 747 for that much money. Or buy the RSV, and a New SUV!! Last year I bought an 08 Chev TrailBlazer for 17K, with 8,000 miles on it. Think about it! 20 to 35K for a motorcyle, whatever brand it is ?????

Turn key nothing happens
GeorgeS replied to semaj's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Might be the infamous Ignition Switch problem. The Main " On - Off " contacts of the ignition switch. Find the " Ignition fuse " check there with volt meter, see you get voltage to the input side of the fuse, when switch is turned " On " This is a very common problem.- 4 replies

Some spark, then no spark
GeorgeS replied to saltcreep's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Try opening up, and Cleaning the Red Switch on right handlebar. Voltage for all the ignition Switch goes thru this switch. Ignition Fuse, holders are highly suspect. Clean the Switch, on the side stand, make sure its not sticking. follow cable from switch to a pull apart plug. check the switch operation with and ohmeter. From the Pick Up coiles to the TCI, is a 5 wire cable, about half way to the TCI is a pull apart plug installed in this cable, its located just about under your left knee as you sit on the bike. Find this plug, open it, and Clean the Contacts and Inspect the wires, make sure none of them are comeing loose from the pins in the plug. At the Left Front Carb, look forward, and UP. See, the " Barro Pressure Sensor " NOT easy to see. On bottom of this item is a Rubber Boot, covering the Electrical plug. Remove the boot and plug, and clean the contacts. I know of one bike where this rubber boot was Full of Water, and CRUD, which was shorting out the Voltage to the TCI. Its powered off the same Ignition Fuse !!!! ( This is a LONG SHOT, but check it anyway ) If all else fails, you might have a bad TCI. You might need to remove it, and remove the cover, and put it into an oven at 110 DEG. F. to dry out the Moisture. This is a common problem. -
I have installed Amateur Radio, HF Radiio equipment on my 89. Finished the installation about 2 months ago. An Icom IC-7000 Transciever, HF, VHF, UHF and 6 meters. ( If you are in Ham radio, you will understand ) This radio is a 100 Watt Transmitter on HF and 50 Watt on VHF and UHF. With the Two Odyessy PC-680's I have been able to sit in the drive way, and use the radio for about 45 min. and transmitt for about 10Min. total time, and still have about 12.4 volts across both batteries. ( thats about 40 precent charged ) I have taken 2 road trips since the installation, and used the Transmitter extensivly and have had no trouble with the batteries or charging system. I do have the upgraded " Electrix " stator installed. Just got back from 700 mile run, and next morning checked the voltage on both batteries, both reading 12.9 Volts, fully charged. If any Ham Radio guys out there are considering M/C Mobil Ham radio, I highly reccomend the IC-7000 transciever. Also gives you AM, FM, in addition to All Ham frequencies. I am useing Hustler Antenna's. I have installed two antenna mounts, and can switch between the two. I am considering buying and SGC Antenna tuner, so I can use just one antenna for all frequencies. The Ham antenna seems to work good for AM and FM station receptiion. Still haveing problems with the 40Meter band, RF feed back problems. The main point to all of this is the AGM Batteries !! Useing old Lead Acid types, I would not be able to operate this system. Simply not enough current draw avialable. I have #4 Battery cables installed to both batteries, and use double Starter Solinoid set up. The transmitter pulls about 20 Amps on transmit function, and about 3.5 amps on receive. Anyway so far , so good. Why?? well, mainly just to see if I could make it work on a motorcycle. And, being retired, I had nothing else to do this summer. The equipment also doubles for use in the TrailBlazer, and a quick move to the work bench in the garage to use with my main Ham Station Antenna's. If any Ham operators out there are interested in the details, would be glad to discuss the details.

If its a Lead Acid, OEM type battery, be sure to consider that it could be discharging " Internally " If you find nothing else, then fully charge the battery, and disconnect the POS cable from battery. About 5 hours later, take a voltage reading, with Digital meter. Let it sit for a few days, then re-check the No Load voltage with Digital Meter. If its discharging internally then the level will probably be down around 11.5 or lower. If so-- the battery is toast

Cheap, replacement air cleaners - are there?
GeorgeS replied to Semi-retired's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
General rule of thumb for the 1st gens, is don't mess with the filter box, other then adding a few holes to increase air flow. But it you over do it, you will cause problems. Just as a test, remove the cover and go for a ride-- You will soon realize that the engine is not running quite right !! Mine runs like crap, with the cover removed ! -
Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance: Coast to Coast
GeorgeS replied to mini-muffin's topic in Watering Hole
Great video's of the old bikes. Thanks for the link !!! -
Yes to all the reply's. Especially if I had been in the left lane, farther back where the thing landed !! Also after thinking about the entire event, the 3 car's ahead of me, directly behind the truck that threw the tread. Its amazing the thing went to the left lane under the other truck, so those cars did not get into a chain reaction. If the first car had taken the hit, its hard to imagine what would have happened. I was thinking about why I was exactly where I was at the time, I had just entered the freeway from an " On Ramp " and decideing what position to take in the heavy traffic. Traffic from the state hwy I was entereing from, plus another local, on ramp. were all mergeing at this point, into a 2 lane freeway ( I-5 ) ( on south end of Eugene Or ) , and also entering curves. Sort of a bad set up. Its just one of those things we have to live with, if we are going to ride. Bottom line I guess is simply don't spend anymore time then is absolutly necessary close to the big rigs. And I am re-evaluating just how far those big chunks of rubber can fly thru the air !!

I have a PC-545 in my 99 Busa. its going on 5 years now!! No trouble !! The stock Yuasa's only lasted about 12 months in that bike. I have PC-680 in my 89 Venture, close to 4 years of service, still going strong. However the DEKA's have higher output rateing, and are exact fit. Don't even think twice, get the AGM type !!!

I rode down to Southern Oregon and back over the last 2 days, a nice 700 mile ride. However on return just south of Eugene Ore, had a scarry moment ! 18 wheeler, 3 cars ahead of me in right lane, I'm in the right lane. Left lane, 1 car just ahead of me, and another 18 wheeler ahead of that car. That trucks cab, was about abreast of the tail end of the trailer in my lane 3 cars ahead of me. Speed about 65 MPH. The truck 3 cars ahead of me, throw's a tire caseing, from rear end of trailer. I don't know if the cars got hit, but the caseing went to the left lane, and went under the rear wheels of the 18 wheeler in the left lane. The loose caseing was propelled, Up, and back, and flew over the Car, that was directly behind the 18 wheeler in the left lane. ( that guy was very lucky, it did not go thru his windshield, cause he was tailgateing the truck !!! ) I watched as the large caseing ( about 1/2 of the caseing ) went flying bye me on my left, about 15 feet in the air. I watched it land about 40 feet behind me in the left lane. Lucky for me, it was traveling straight aft of the truck. !!! About now, I'm hitting the brakes as the car's ahead of me are slowing, and I see a dust cloud ahead, as the truck that threw the caseing, was takeing the shoulder of the road and hitting the brakes. Whats the morel of this story ?? Stay away from trucks, which I have said many times. And obviously yesterday I was not following my own advise. I was to darn close to those trucks, and I am darn lucky I did not get hit !! Other then that it was a nice trip, except for the 12 year old kid on a bike in some small town on Hwy 99W in Oregon who darted across the street in front of me. I almost hit him !! Oh well, such is life, Ride safe my friends, you never know whats comeing down those roads !!

Carb Frustration. I'm goona shoot it!
GeorgeS replied to Sheradan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Completly drain your tank at the petcock, and start with new fuel, and Sea-Foam. Drain all 4 carb bowls seperatly with the bowl drains, letting fuel pump run fuel thru the bowls. Go for a good hard ride with the Sea-Foam in new gas, see if anything changes. Pull the plugs and see what they look like. You might have an ignition problem on one cylinder. Try a new set of plugs. Screw the plug caps off the Ignition Wires, make sure the copper strands are not chewed off at top of Resistor caps. Find the Pull apart plug from the Pick up Coiles going to the TCI, and clean the Pins. This is a known trouble spot. Pull both plugs from the TCI unit, and clean the pin contacts. ( might help ) And of course !!! Check for Intake Air Leaks, Above, and below the Carbs. Also, check the two bolts holding each Intake Manifold to the Cylinder heads, you might have an In-Take air leak. These engines do NOT like Intake Air Leaks !! Manifolds, have an O-Ring, at the heads. Also use sealant if you replace the O-rings. Those Clamps above and below the carbs are fairly chezzy clamps, I had to get a new set of them. Old ones were stretched, and would not seal.
