Mount a DVD screen on the back of your helmet! Have you tried to reposition the trunk back a little?? You would be amazed whast just an inch or two can do for passenger comfort! Also, if you haven't done so yet, install arm rests for her and a giant cup holder. As far as getting her head above yours, she wouldn't enjoy all the wind. Convince her she does not have to do the driving so there is no need for her to keep her eyes on the road, the scenery is to the side...

85 venture parts on an 83
bongobobny replied to jeffg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes most parts are interchangeable! The upper fairings are interchangeable. The engine covers are not directly interchangeable however but can be made to work. The wiring harness from a standard to a Royale is NOT interchangeable but similar. The CMU is not interchangeable but the rest of the dash is. The TCI is not interchangeable nor are the carbs. As was mwentioned, the '83 had a frame issue that was corrected on the '84 on up. The second gear issue was fixed midway during the '85 model year so later '85 does not have the problem. Early '85 does still have the issue... -
OK now to add fuel to the fire. Kevlar, being stronger, won't erode as much as cork...
-
Outstanding!! You're right, in a major US city the spectators would join in the shooting...
-
Very amusing!! OK on the subject of Kevlar vs cork, kevlar is a lot stronger than cork and if there is any degredation of material, the kevlar partacles, in theory, will be a lot more abrasive than cork causing more parts wear potential as the same oil that goes thru the clutch also goes thru the entire engine. In reality the actual degredation of the kevlar is minute and the larger particles will be trapped in the oil filter, or should be. This brings up an entirely new topic of which oil filters are better but I'm not going into that here. So, bottom line. Everything is about decisions. In this case do you want performance or longevity? If you want a more positive clutch then by all means go to the kevlar. If you are planning on driving the bike until the frame rusts out then stay away from the kevlar...

Well now that wasn't a nice thing to happen, was it! Glad you're OK!!

Preferred Fluids
bongobobny replied to parsonsm's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK brake fluid for a 1st gen is DOT 3. I prefer a synthetic as the boiling point is higher. Motor oil, do NOT use any additives or mileage extending auto oils as we have what is known as a "wet" clutch, so if you don't want your clutch to slip, don't use those. Use either motorcycle oil or diesel oil, 15W45, like Shell Rotella as mentioned or Chevron Delo or Mobil Devron. Anti Freeze, make sure it is compatible with aluminum!! Very important! -
The question being what types of bikes do those braggarts run?? A lighter bike will be a lot kinder on tires than our heavy beasts...

Wow, when it rains it pours, eh?!!? Sorry to hear the waters have been rough lately. Remember that there is a reason and purpose for everything in life even if we don't understand at the time. When life settles down for you then you will really understand how life can be great. If life went smooth all the time we wouldn't appreciate the good things! Better not forget your anniversary or you will be in some deep doo!! Treat that bride of yours extra special this year 'cause she is indeed a very special lady! We'll be praying for you.

No back brakes
bongobobny replied to chrislemon's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You mean besides pay someone else to do it??? -
Engineering change 2177! Was all set to mount up the whole assembly when I noticed the brake pedal was all of a sudden binding and not returning. {Problem being the rubber dirt boot on the front of the master cylinder was binding up on the floorboard assembly. A splat of crazy glue and the problem should be fixed...

side stand switch
bongobobny replied to reddevilmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
New ones are not that expensive, but usually when they go bad they act open, not shorted! You can ohm out the contacts on a bad one that is open but it will read some resistance, sometimes as low as 10 ohms or so, but they will kill the engine when you shift out of neutral with the side stand up... -
Yah! That's what I'm thinking too, the drive shaft is not engaged into the U joint. I did that once on my 1st gen...

Yes, it does seem to point to the idle circuit in the carbs. Seafoam may help but you may have to do a teardown on your carbs. I would also inspect your diaphragms for pinholes. Lastly, new plugs and wires may help out as well...

Just Wondering?
bongobobny replied to Power Trippin's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The sender unit most likely needs servicing/adjusting. It's located on top of the tank under the seat, and comes out with 2 bolts... -

Looking for a Good Starting Point
bongobobny replied to parsonsm's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You are right, PLENTY of miles left in it! OK first change all the fluids, brake fluids, clutch fluid, radiator flush, rear differential, and of course oil change. Next, buy a can of "Seafoam", half a can to a tank of gas, and drive it like you stole it! After that then you can start to pay attention to necessary things to fix, as well as a whole bunch of "mods" you will find about here on the site. Welcome aboard!! -
You'll be a little feistier off the line, and your RPM's will be up for the same MPH, but it makes the top gear soooo much more functional! Didn't do mine but the late JGorom did his and I got to experience it...

No, we all get the smae price, but I can guarantee Larry makes up quality stuff!!!
