TCI Problems
bongobobny replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Me thinks it's either a secret military project or UFO's causing the problem... Hey, somebody had to throw in a little comic releif! -
I keep forgetting the cheap meters that most people use do not have a 2 ohm or 200 milliohm scale! I'm used to autoranging meters at work and bonding resistance meters with built in 4 wire system...
-
See? There ya go! 420 milliohms! OK Hal, pure resistance of a piece of wire, in this case wrapped in a coil is expressed as DC resistance measured in ohms aqnd is not to be confused with AC i9mpedance also expressed in ohms. When you read impedance you are looking at the "j" factor of both DC resistance AND the sum of the inductive reactance and the capacitive reactance. A coil is an inductor as opposed to a capacitor and it "resists" AC current flow differently than a DC current. The output of your stator is an AC current, the rotor is the magnetic part that's attached to the crankshaft and spins around while your stator stays still, and as the magnetic lines of flux from spinning magnets from the rotor pass the coil a rising and decaying voltage is created across the coil asnd depending on wnether the north or south side of the magnet is passing, the current will flow either in one direction or the other Your stator is a 3 phase output AC voltage/current and the rectifier/regulator converts the AC to DC for the battery. The rectifier changes it to DC and the regulator keeps the output at a steady level voltage and regulates the current as needed to charge the battery. Now that you are thoroughly confused...

OK Not running you look for the same DC resistance between all combinations of any two white wires. Running, you are looking for equal AC voltage between all combinations of any two wires. No, I'm not sure of the values but someone will chime in. If your stator is bad one combination of wires will read different from the rest, whether it be resistance or voltage. The combinations, take 2 wires and check. Of those 2, use one of them to check the third wire. Then check the third wire against the other wire you first checked. If the DC resistance is all very close then at least you don't have an open winding, but you could have a winding shorting out with another winding in the same coil, so you still need to compare the output voltages to all be the same as well. The stator is actually 3 coils connected in the center in what is known as a wye (Y) configuration...

Yes, but I used my Squidley mounts for my driving lights, a little different than what Brad designed them to be used... -
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Amy!!!

I've met Bill too in person, and he is a great guy!!!

Finally got my wife to ride the 85 VR with me.

Anti dive brake hose need one

There ya go!! There are a few members that also have them extra for the same reason! A similar situation just came up a couple of weeks ago... -
Way to go DANO!! I'm so glad you're even able to ride again much less ready to get back in the saddle again! Sweet looking ride but it's got waaaay too little miles on it! Better be planning a few long distance rides, like maybe to the International?!!?
-
Aww Reet!! Even the color matches!!! Way to go Tom!

Good luck with having that Wally World battery last more than a couple of years! When you have to replace it again, spring the extra money and get a DEKA battery, lots more cranking power! I would let the dealer fix your bike, but there are also upgrades to both the stator and voltage regulator out there. Buckeye Performance can fix you up with a high output stator and a better voltage regulator...

Bad boy/stebel horn
bongobobny replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I used a piece of aluminum angle stock to mount mine and buffed them out (the home made aluminum brackets) to make them look like chrome. I think it was 1" stock. One hole on the end to mount the bracket where the stock horn bracket went then a larger hole on the other end to mount the horns. They are REALLY loud!! -
Yes your swing arm will have to come out. Perfect time to inspect and grease your bushings as well! You might want to consider replacing the ball bearings as well as they are not that expensive and are quite old at this point. Now to replace all the bushings on the shock linkage on the other hand will bet rather expensive to the tune of about $200 or more. Don't ask how I know this! Speaking of those bushings, you may want to consider drilling and tapping for some zerx fittings so you can periodically grease them...

You're gonna get some quality work if Larry builds it! It'll be hurricane proof with electricity and running water too no doubt...

decided enough is enough! We have to get to Don's! So, I got out my cell phone to reunite all of us, first and second gen's alike and even a Harley and some guy on a moped so we could get this road trip back on course. We decided to all meet at...

Another new way to mount stuff on a 1st gen handlebar.
bongobobny replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Watering Hole
Wow! Almost makes me want to ride the 1st gen again! Great idea!!! -
Yes Jay, that thought did cross my mind that I may have gone overboard on the diameter! I went with a 1 1/8 bore 1" stroke and I probably should have went with a 7/8 bore 1 1/2" stroke but I was concerned with delivering the most volume with minimum travel. I'm sure once I get twice the pad area on bigger and thicker rotors things will be the way I want it! Right now it has about the same braking power as before I started. They have about the same braking power as the front brakes do which also leaves a lot to be desired but I'm sure when I switch to the R1 calipers that will also improve. I did last nite's write up for someone that wanted to know if just the master cylinder made a difference and the answer is no, just a firmer pedal with less travel, which is to be expected...
