  1. I bought my 1st Venture in April of 1986.I am now 64,I've had 4 1st gen and now ride an 08 RSTD and am thinking of getting an RSV as well.I still have my last VR a 1987 5th anniversary edition. I love that V-4 motor.
  2. I have been thinking about aftermarket FI for a long time for my RSTD and I have to agree,it would be expensive and not get enough change to justify the cost. Having said that I would love for Yamaha to add FI to the Royal Star line but I fear that their solution will be to discontinue the bike. The platforms that used that motor have shrunk from 3 to 1 and the sales of the Royal Stars are not and never have been really that great and Yamaha appears to have zero interest in developing the Venture any further.Sad days indeed.I went thru this once with the 1st gen and I don't think we are very far away from it happening again.
  3. Be sure to look at the throttle cables esp the ones from thejunction box to the carbs.!st gens had a problem with the pull cable fraying and since its pretty much the same set up its a good thing to check. Set the steering head bearings, maybe replace the brake lines with stainless steel.
  4. Answer to the 1st question is " I may be a perfect rider but the other drivers out there are idiots and you never know when you are going to meet one acting out their full idiocy." Part 2.Well she is 18 and like it or not she is going to be making more and more of her own decisions, and you wont like all of them. You have taught her the right way to ride and now you can only hope she will follow your teachings and hope that the lesson for not following them is not too costly.Keep reminding her of what is right and her boyfriends of what behavior you expect from them and you have really have done as much as you can now. At least her friends come around and talk to you and appear to listen you and that is a very good thing. You have a very good relationship it seems with both parties and having raised 5 kids myself I know how hard that is.It doesn't matter if the young man who wants to ride with you is smart or playing you the outcome is the same.Good luck.
  5. Why would you hold both buttons? All you have to do is hold the odometer button 3 secs or less and it switches to the clock
  6. No 83 thru 85 had the multiple coil springs and then with the redisgn for 86 the diaphram disk was instituted.
  7. carbon one those are K Car filters and we"ve used them for years in the 1st gens.Guess Yamaha is still using the same filter.
  8. It was all I could do to get 35 to 38mpg out of my 83 and my 86 was worse. There was nothing wrong with them I had them both balanced and the Exhaust Gas Analizer put on them and they were burning right.I have an 87 now and it gets 40,no more no less just stays right there. TheNumbers for the EGA were the same. The 2008 RSTD goes from 36 to 44 depending on whether I can keep my fist out of the throttle or not.So yes I would say that 140 to 150 is about right for an 83.
  9. Hi Pete long time no see. The speedo is a sealed unit and the only way to open it is to destroy it.The Speedo part is a strip of something like a printed circuit board that glows. There are no light bulbs per se but I don't know how the "glow" is actually produced. There was a discussion about this over on The Venturers board awhile ago when someone wanted to repair their speedometer. So are we going to get together this summer and ride? UTAdverture and the Temple Riders are coming down to Spring City to my house on Saturday May 29 for Spring City Heritage Days. Why don't you join us?BBQ Friday night and historic tours Saturday.Call me I think all my information is still on STAR.Or pm me here.
  10. I don't post here very often.I was with Bob and Don before the Venturers even became the Venturers.I followed Don to the MTA and then here but kept my membership at Venturers also and mostly i post over there.Don thank you for the posting on the early days.Whether you knew Bob Edwards or not Motorcycling lost one of its great ones this weekend. The fact that we have 2 fantastic places to come and talk about both 1st and 2nd gen yamaha v-4s is due to the vision and perservience of Bob and Don.We cover the world pretty much now but back in the day I think we only had about 20 or thirty of us and most of them were on the East coast or Texas. We will miss Bob alot. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could really tell a great story. He was always concerned for his friends in the Venturers. When my first wife died he was one of the first with condolences and right there with good wishes when I married the 2nd time.He even wrote about his illness with interest and some humor making it more then just a lament over current woes.We will ride with our passenger pegs down but I cant see Bob as ever being comfortable as a passenger. We will miss you Bob Good Luck and God speed.Don thanks for your efforts here even thru your own trying times.
  11. I have a 2008 RSTD bought new in Feb of 2008.Currently has 29000mi. I have added chrome edge trim to the fenders,VentureDad hitch,Yamaha bag guards,Drivers back rest,Yamaha lugage rack to sissy bar,Tank mount chrome covers, chrome levers, passing lamps,Visors on all lights except headlight, rear brake resevoir chrome cover,Kuryachen grips modified to retain stock bar ends, chrome carb covers, custom tribal pinstriping, www tires front and rear,Yamaha studded driver and passenger seats and I think thats all for now.Oh I also removed the hubcaps from the rotors as per Eagle Eye.Soon to be added,Garmin Nuvi 500 GPS and AutoCom ActiveDuo. I would also like to add a matching color tinted(blue) windshield ala Memphis Fats if anone has any suggestions on where to get that?? I waited 12 years for this bike and it is worth every minute.
  12. This is a Test.It is only a Test.If it were a real Post you would be reading something interesting here instead of this nonsense.
  13. I used the Metzler 880 in 130x16 on the front but they did not have a 150X15 in www. I now have the Dunlop 404 on a 2008 RSTD. I had good success with both brands
  14. I would be interested depending on price. Also which size is the best for an RSTD.I have been thinking of going to the darkside but lack of a WWW has kept me from it.
  15. I have had marker lights mounted on the calipers on my 1st gens for 20 years with no vibration, road debris,or blub longivity problems. I have run spot lights and driving lights there on other bikes with no pronlems.
  16. Didn't we do this awhile back? Anyway the 87 5th Anniversary Edition VR is The Golden Hind and the 2008 RSTD is Pegasus Blue Star.
  17. Good for you.It has been so cold here in Central Utah we haven't been out. I can hardly wait for warmer weather. The snow in front of the shed door is almost melted enough to get the bike out.
  18. 25 but I should have done better.I confused Nathan Hale( I regret I have only one life to give for my country ) with Patric Henry ( give me liberty or give me death).
  19. EBC,Braking and DP(Dunlopad) and Yamaha all recommend a 100 mile break in period on new pads and disks to mate them to each other and prevent glazing. No hard stopping or heating them up.Easy applications.
  20. Look at the ends of the weights. You wil see a chrome cap.CAREFULLY pry it off.underneath you will see a screw.Take it out and the weight drops off in your hand.I put Kurys on my 08 and like them.
  21. Does a Midnight come in Blue?..............No That is a standard RSV of 2007 vintage. The "S" model came in Charcoal and Black and replaces the Midnight.
  22. Wow I sympathize with ya man.It must suck knowing that every time you ride you have a good chance of smacking a bird:rotf: In 45 years and I don't even want to think how many miles I have only hit one bird and that was on my first road trip in the 60's. A humming bird hit me between the eyes just outside of Moab by Arches NP.I was riding a Norton Commando, no windshield and if my sleeping bag had not been tied on the seat behind me I would have done a back flip off the bike.I was wearing goggles but the bird mess covered them and I could only see a little out the right side, just enough to get it off the road without a crash. My buddy was laughing so hard he did drop his Bike when he stopped.:headache:Head and neck ached for a week.:rotf:I still laugh when I think about that.
  23. OK since you don't have a sync tool easiest thing for you is to check the diaphragms.Hold them to light and look for pin holes. When you put them back be sure to seat them properly.Next check the vacuum advance unit.I don't have my manual here and its been too long since I did one but someone here can tell you if you don't already know. A bad advance can make it run odd and be difficult to spot.Good luck. BTW I second that previous advice, keep wife happy and all else will fall in place.
  24. Firemist Blue Metallic with White diamond Pearl panels. The sun will hit that and everyone around will go green with envy just before they go blind from the flash.
