  1. Recieved mine today also and yes they both look like new. I plan on installing mine after the riding season. Thanks again Dano for all your work on this. Rick F.
  2. If you are going to remove all the plastic on the bike I would look at having the valves checked as you have most of the work started with just replacing the gaskets. You might as well change out both that way you know both are in good shape and if you have someone checking valve clearances they most likely will put the covers back on for you with the new gaskets. Hope this helps. Rick F.
  3. Your swing arm is normal for you year of Venture. I have an 89 and just looked at it and my is cut at an angle also, just like yours. The is a difference in swingarms between the the earlier Ventures and the later first gens. You will also find that the relay arms are different also as the made a change to them in 1988 to those. Anyway the washer goes between the wheel hub and the torsion bar for the caliper. The caliper is mounted securely to the bar and it floats a bit on the axle. I did just rebuild my braking system and I ended up using some washers on the mounting bolts for the caliper to get it spaced out properly to clear the rotor. My rotor is warped a bit also and I plan on replacing it but I had one of the button bolts strip out the allen head on it so I just left it till I could get in the proper bolts for it. The spacers I used where the ones from the brake lines as I upgraded to steel braid lines when I rebuilt the system. You might also want to take a look at the hole the axle goes thru on the torsion bar as I have seen the very egg shaped. This might be part of your problem. I dont believe the hole is perfectly round from the factory but cant say for sure and this part isnt available anymore from Yamaha. Hope this helps you a bit and let me know you have other question. Rick F.
  4. Wish I could make it up that way. But the wife invited her side of the family to stay here that weekend and for some reason thinks I need to be here too. One of these years I am going to make it up to the PNP. You doing much riding Owl? Rick
  5. Check some of the topics at the bottom of the page. Your best bet is to get a replacement antenna and use that as the stock one are $$$ and hard to find. Good Luck Rick F.
  6. Sounds like a nice ride. I took a day off last Tuesday and went up to Duluth, over to Bayfield, WI and then to Hayward and Trego and then on some country roads straight west to Wi 35 and then down to Grantsburg and over to I-35 and back to Bloomington, MN. Was about 500 miles and was a great day for a ride. Very little traffic and weather was great. I had hoped to head up into the Iron Range but when I got to Duluth it was looking like rain to the north so I headed east along the south shore of Lake Superior. Hope you had a great ride. Rick F.
  7. Jay Leno did a short review video on this and has it posted on his website. http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.shtml?vid=1138960 He seemed to like the bike. Rick F.
  8. Dano, Just sent you the Paypal for my two Shindegan part # FH012AA. Let me know if you have any question about it. Thanks for doing this for us and Thanks to everyone else associated with it. Rick F.
  9. Yes I had this issue with my 89 VR after I purchased it a number of years ago. It too had been sitting for a number of years and had very little movement in the rear supension. I found the parts were seized and I had to drive out a couple of the rods and replace some of the bushing in the relay arms. I ended up putting in grease zerks so I could grease everything instead of taking it all apart. I didnt need to heat anything to remove them but just a little force on them did the trick. Hope this helped. Let me know if you have any other questions. Rick F.
  10. Go ahead and sign me up for a couple also. Thanks Rick F.
  11. I just came back from Indy to Minnesota and be prepared for lots of road construction in Ill. I-74 had lots of one lane roads and work area speeds of 45mph even when they arent working in the area. Iowa was fairly open other then a short section of bridge work between the Quad Cities and Iowa City and with some construction around Iowa City. Not sure what way you are planning to go from Waterloo, Ia but that is where I-380 ends. You have a choice of US 20, all 4 lane to I-35 or US 218 to US 18 to I-35, again all 4 lane. I usually go the US 218/18 route and did have a section of 1 lane road for about 10 miles or so, but traffic was moving freely on it. Cant tell you much about I-90 in Minn or SD as I havent been on those routes in a while. Cant tell you much about camp ground as I dont pay much attention to them. But I did stay at the Devils Tower KOA back in 1981 and it was very nice at that time. It is located right outside the park at the main entrance and had red cliffs as the background to it. Enjoy your time and be safe.. Rick F.
  12. there in nothing like seeing a big steamer rocking along the tracks. If you can, take the time to go and see them. Also check out site http://www.sp4449.com for the path of one of the steamers. Rick F.
  13. No you shouldnt have to mess with the exhaust. I did remove the footpeg and shifter but was able to work it out and back in after rebuilding it. Just take your time and it come out and go back in. Good Luck Rick F.
  14. I have the same issue with mine. Talked to Tech support at Motion Pro and they said something about putting grease on the adjustment screws. Seems the new units are coming with direction that have you do this before using. Havent tired it myself as I am await replacement fluid for mine. Try contact the tech support at Motion Pro and they should fix you up. Rick F.
  15. I just installed the Progressive Springs in the front forks with 10W Fork Oil and am very happy with the ride. I didnt use the plastic preload spaces as I left in the aircaps and the factory metal washer. I have about 500 miles on them so far and am very happy with the ride of the bike. Figured if I didnt like it I could also add them later but as of now I dont expect I will. Good Luck and enjoy your bike.. Rick F.
  16. I ended up using #6S brass washers I got from Home Depot. They are smaller in diameter then the regular #6 and worked very nicely for me. I ended up using 3 of them as each one measured out at .6 mm in thickness. Hope this helps. Rick F.
  17. When bleeding the brakes, you should do the rear brake first and then the left front and then bleed the portioning assemble that is located at the top of the triple tree. You will need to remove the false tank cover and you should see another bleeder up near the triple tree and you will need to bleed this one with the rear brake pedal. This is the high point for the linked brake system. You could have other issues but try bleeding them this was and see if it helps with the linked brakes. Good Luck and enjoy the bike. Rick F.
  18. I thought I would add to this post with my experience with replacing the plastic fitting in the carbs with some brass #6S washers. I measured the plastic fitting to be 2.6mm on my carbs. I ended up using 3 of the #6S brass washers and each one ended up being .6mm thick. With 3 of them I was at 1.8mm. I did this to all 4 carbs and was able to get my mileage up from 36-38 to 46MPG. Engine runs strong and seems to be responsive also. I did replace the diaphrams with the new ones. I have driven roughly 500 miles and mileage is stay stable at 46mpg and speed have been averaging around 60mph. I havent pulled the plugs yet but plan on that at about 1000 miles and will let you know what I find. Thanks to everyone for suppling information about this as I am sure it wasnt something I would have tried on my own. Rick F.

  21. Just a note on this. If you are measuring the new oil level, you need to compress the forks when you take you measurement. I just got mine installed and I ended up trying it with out the PVC spacer to see how it is. Unfortunately I havent got it back on the road just yet but should by this coming monday. Just take your time and it doesnt take long at all. Good Luck. Rick F.
  22. There is a plastic washer that goes between the base of the antenna and the stud. I have found that without that, the antenna wont tighten up properly. Check out the part fiche and you will see it listed there. Here is the information from Flatout on it. It is listed under Audio 1.. 28 WASHER,PLATE 90202-17211-00 (replaces 26H-88149-00-00) 1 $3.23 Hope this helps. Rick F.
  23. Randy, I do have mine. Let me know where to send it and I will get it in the mail sometime this week. Mine is ok with no leaks, I just replaced all my hoses with Buckeyes steel braided hoses due to the age of mine. They are off a 89 VR and look original. Rick F.
  24. I believe I have one as I just replaced mine with steel braided hoses. I will make sure I havent thrown it away but I am sure it is just sitting in the drain pan right now. You can have it for just shipping cost as I was just going to toss it. It is off a 89 so it is 20 years old but it wasnt leaking. Let me know. Rick F.
  25. I dont expect to make it as I have a bike in pieces and need to finish the brakes and carb work. Hope you all have fun and it is a nice weekend. Rick F.
