Brake lights added
cimmer replied to cimmer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Here are some sites with a good comparison. http://www.ledropelightsandmore.com/led-smd-comparison.html http://ezinearticles.com/?All-About-LED-Strips-4---The-Eternal-Debate---SMD3528-Vs-SMD5050&id=4670120 Hope that clears some things up. Rick F. -
Brake lights added
cimmer replied to cimmer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have replaced my stock travel trunk reflector with an out of production aftermarket unit that had 4 194 bulbs that can be wired for either brake lights or running lights or a combo of both. It also has a pair of turn signal indicators on each side of that. Taking that about isnt too bad as you can use a heat gun to soften the glue or you can work the cover off also if you take it easy on it. I am not sure how to remove the reflector from the mount but if you could I believe that you could add these LED as brake in that also. Hope that helps. Rick F. -
I had purchased one of the replacement turnsignal/brakelights for the reflector on the travel trunk on my 89 VR and never was happy with how much light the 4 194 bulbs put out for an additional brake light. I liked the idea of it up higher and more eye level with the cars behind me but just didnt do the job in my mind in getting their attention. So I have been on the lookout for more lighting for it for a while. I finally took the plunge and tried out some 12vdc strip LEDs in red. These are what is called a 5050 LED with 3 sources of light per LED housing and has 300 LEDs per 5 meter length. I ended up filling the rear of the housing with over a 100 leds and I must say it is now bright and noticeable. I purchased them off of Ebay for $26.00 shipping included from a China location. Here is the seller and he has lowered his price it appears. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Red-Waterproof-5050-300LED-5M-60LED-M-Light-Strip-12V-IP65-LED-LAMP-Car-Auto-/120894815654?pt=US_Car_Lighting&hash=item1c25e47da6 I feel that the light is just as bright if not brighter then the stock brake light and comes on quicker then the stock brake light also. I am thinking the next step is to try a modulator that has the lights at 33% power to work as a taillight and then flashes the LEDs for a bit and then goes solid. I really want to get their attention of those behind me. Here are some pictures of the setup. Let me know what you think. File 1 & 2 is how I set them in the housing. The LEDs are waterproof and have 3M sticky tape on the backside. They are able to be cut every 3 LED and have solder pads to attach wires to them. File 5 is the LEDs on but the red cover is not installed yet. File 6 is with the cover installed and the LEDs on and the overhead garage lights on. File 7 is with the cover installed and the LEDs on and the overhead garage lights off. Thanks Rick F.

Have You Recently Purchased Roto Covers for MKII.
cimmer replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
I purchased a set of NOS rotor covers on a buy it now and with shipping paid $130.00. Now I feel I got a steal as I seen used ones in good shape go for over $200 for the pair. Hope that helps. Rick F. -
I wouldn't know why it would be close in May unless you are talking Beartooth Pass. That would depend on what the snow fall ends up being for the area but the pass usually isn't open till June usually. Here is a link that you can check the conditions of the pass before you leave. http://www.beartoothhighway.com/ I was out there in middle June a few years ago and they had just opened up the pass the day before we arrived there. The snow drifts along the road in places were about 20 ft tall and the snow melt was refreezing on the road when it was in the shadow of the snow drifts. But if it is open, well worth the drive. Hope that helps you a bit. Rick F.

I would think it would be for the carbs and electronics if they are functional. The link under the stator is most likely the wires coming and it has oil leaking around it. How are the vents in the side covers? If they are complete they are worth a bit but if they are broken, not much worth there. I wouldnt be too concerned about the tires as I dont know if I would want to trust them unless they are only a year or two old. Good Luck and let us know. Rick F.

Front Axle Right Spacer ?
cimmer replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sounds like that would work out. I agree making the spacer out of one piece would be a lot easier then just making a washer. Let us know how it works out for you. Rick F. -
Front Axle Right Spacer ?
cimmer replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The bore was straight thru with no step. I measured both ends of the axle bore just to make sure of that. All measurements were done with a Harbor Freight digital caliper and I did zero it out a couple times to verify all the measurements taken. I dont have an axle available to measure so I am not sure of diameter of that. I hope that helps. Rick F. -

Front Axle Right Spacer ?

If you need measurement of the spacer, I have a NOS set that I havent installed on my 89 VR yet and would be happy to measure the spacer for you. I had posted the instructions that come with the rotor covers in an earlier post, http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66503, I hope this helps. I also just noticed in the part list at the end of the instructions it list the measurements for the spacer in question. Rick F. -
I have a set that I havent installed yet and would be happy to get you measurements on them. Might be next week before I can get you the information but I will work on it. If I have the install docs for them I will scan them also and post them here also. I will include a ruler in the scan so you can scale them to the correct size. Rick F.

Looking for a Good Starting Point
cimmer replied to parsonsm's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you haven't found it yet, here is the link to the post with the service manual site one of the members put together for us. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3384 You can download a PDF of the service manual for your bike and that will help you figure out how to do some of the items and where they are located at on the bike. And if you arent sure of something... Ask away here all you need too. Rick F. -
I have noticed at my local Home Depot that they also stock Seafoam and have it priced at $6.48 also I believe. I havent purchased any yet as I still have some left from the last time I found it on sale. It was located around the lawn mower section of Home Depot. Rick F.

Vent resistance?
cimmer replied to Rosie1965's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
For my side cover vents I used a tie wrap and used a screw in the head part and and screwed it in the boss on the back side of the vent and then cut the strap to hit the indents on the back side of the vent. This provides the resistance needed to hold them in the position you set them in. I hope this helps. Rick F. -
We havent traded off but his wife has rode behind both of us and stated that the bigger windshield did block the buffeting a lot better she thought. I actually get better mileage then he did last year but he had electrical issue with his bike that was cleared up with a new fuse block. I am averaging about 42-45 MPH but I have also leaned the carbs down a bit so I cant say now much I lost if any. The comfort makes up for any mileage I might have lost in my opinion. Rick F.

Mine is the GT25 model with a grey tint and the vent. I have attached a couple of photos that show a stock windshield and the GT25 on a couple of 89 VRs to help you compare and some pics of just the GT25. I choose the grey tint to help with night drying and glare issue I experience from time to time when I dont have my yellow tinted driving glasses on. The GT 25 is 25.5 inches tall and is also wider then the stock shield. http://clearviewshields.com/shop/product.php?id=82 Hope this helps. Rick F.

You might try BP Blaster on it. That helps sometimes and if that doesnt do it, I would be tempted to remove the whole shock assemble from under the bike and get it somewhere you can work on it. Might also be a good time to add some grease zerks to the pivot points. There is a tech article on that in the library. You should be able to live the swing arm in place but if you havent, grease the splines on the drive shaft also. Good luck and it might just take that BFH to get it out. Rick F.

I have the Clearview Shield on my 89 VR. I got the bigger and wider one with the vent. I havent experienced extra buffering compared to the stock. I was curious about how they compared as I gave my old stock one to a buddy. We were riding together and he had his wife along with us. I had her ride on mine after riding on his and she thought there was less buffering behind mine then there was with the stock windshield. I do tend to run with the vent open a bit and on hot days I have it directed toward my face and go get more air that way. I believe that I have a picture in my album of the windshield also. Hope that helps. Rick F.

rubber grommets
cimmer replied to deanmay's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I usually get mine from http://www.PartShark.com and they have the parts diagrams for the different Yamaha products. They are a good reasonable source for factory parts. Hope this helps. Rick F. -

Welcome Rosie, Here is the link to the service manual for the 86-93 Ventures in a PDF format that one of the members scanned in for our use. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=90 I think you will find it very useful and help you with alot of your questions too. But never be afraid to ask them here also. Rick F.
