Carb rebuild kits?
MiCarl replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I can get you the K&L Vmax kit. Here is what you need to know: - Bowl o-ring is the same on the Vmax and the MK1 Venture - Float valve is different. Now, the Vmax valve may just be a higher flow rate valve and drop right in or it might not work. - All the other little o-rings tend to be fairly universal. As stated previously, the slide is not part of the kit. I can also get the slide assemblies. This would be the whole slide, not just the replacement rubber. -

No matter what you take it'll probably not be what you need if you have a problem. If it were me, I'd make sure all my maintenance was caught up before the trip. Then I'd take a few basics: - Some 16 gauge wire - Wire nuts - Electrical tape - A tube for each tire - Replacement headlamp bulb - Fuses (although they should always be in there!) - Basic tool kit (should always be there too!) - MasterCard I gotta believe that 1156 and 1157 bulbs are plentiful in Mexico, but you could throw some in for convenience. Have a nice trip!

Having owned both a used and new travel trailer I've learned a couple things: 1 - The floors typically start to fail UNDER cabinets and seats. We purchased a 15 year old trailer that looked like new and had been parked over a year. I walked the entire floor and could feel no softness. After taking it home it was visibly collapsing around the frame in two weeks. Fortunately I was able to repair it myself or we'd have been hurt big time. 2 - Try everything including sitting on the commode and getting into the shower. Our current trailer has exactly 6' shower height. At 6' it's annoying, if I was any taller I'd be in trouble. 3 - Think about your future needs. We got a trailer configured for the children to be able to go with us right before they reached the age of not needing parents. We'd be better served with more living space and less sleeping space. I've got to believe there are lots of people that recently bought motorhomes that cannot currently afford payments. I'd think there would be some real steals on the used and repo markets.

Triple tree swap 1200 and 1300????
MiCarl replied to Holgi's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Looking at the parts fiche you cannot just plug in the upper. Looks like vibration dampers were added in 86 so you'd need those and 1NL-23442-00-00 HOLDER, handle lower. This is the part the handle bars clamp to. -
Can't really hold it against you since it was a gift...... Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! Congrats!

According to the Avon rep. premium tires (Avon, Metzeler, Pirelli...) should be run at higher pressures than "stock" tires. According to him premium tires should be inflated per the tire manufacturers recommendation rather than the OEM spec. Avon recommends the Venom at 36 front 42 rear.

The "electronic signal point" is a place on the ignition module that is provided to connect a tachometer. I do not know if the module has one. Here's how that tach works though - it essentially "counts" the coil firing then divides by the cylinder switch setting to get the RPM. So, lets look at a 4 cylinder distributer automobile ignition: The coil fires for each cylinder every other revolution. Since there are 4 cylinders that means it fires twice per revolution. So, on the 4 cylinder setting the tach will divide by 2 to count revs. Your Venture does not have a distributor ignition, it has a coil for each cylinder. Each coil fires once per revolution (1 firing is wasted). So if you hook the tach to one coil and set it on 4 cylinder (lowest setting) it will count 1 firing per revolution and divide by 2. In other words it'll show you half the actual RPM. To get it to read properly you'll need to hook it to 2 coils. Problem is if you just hook it up because both coils will be firing twice per rev, once at the wrong time, and the current draw will be too high which could damage the control module. You need to put a couple diodes in to isolate the triggers for the coils and still let the tach see them. Probably not a "beginner" job.

Clutch Lever Free Play
MiCarl replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
MasterGuns, as I stated in my first post: the lever that was on my motorcycle when I got it was so worn out it would flap in the wind and the motorcycle shifted just fine. Problem with a lever that loose is the cruise won't stay engaged. I agree. Mine builds pressure steadily from the released position. I just remembered that I have a wrecked 86 in the shop. That clutch lever has at least 1/2" free play. The owner had not complained of shifting issues. I just decided to try something with my 89. If I have it idling in 1st gear I need to let the lever out at least an inch before it starts to pull. That's cold, I bet it's even more hot. In other words, I have plenty of room for 1/2" free play and still have a functional clutch. I think you either have air in the line or something wrong in the clutch itself (warped plates?). -
Clutch Lever Free Play
MiCarl replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm not really clear on how you are measuring but I can tell you my 89 has pretty much no free play. Having said that, my previous worn out lever had quite a bit and shifting still wasn't an issue. **EDIT** By ball do you mean the knob on the end of the lever? Answer still 0. -

I'd be inclined to use the same pads on the rear and left front. Mismatching them could change the "balance" on the rear brake. -
2nd Gen Rear Drive - new-4sale
MiCarl replied to brainfart's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
This will also work on a MKII 1st gen, just need to cap or plug the hole for the speedometer pickup. Nice replacement if the end breaks off the drive pinion. It will shift the rear wheel about 1/4" to the left, not an issue. Been using a 2nd gen rear end for over a year. -
It is a pretty good site. It's less social and more about turning wrenches than this one. You do have to keep your BS filter on for some of the advice you'll get. Lots of youngsters (and a few oldsters) that say more than they know.

D.I.Y. 4 Cylinder Carburetor Synchronizer
MiCarl replied to a1bummer's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
I'll bet the big air pockets above the fluid damp it so you didn't need restricters... The sensitivity of a manometer is inversely related to the density of the fluid. Trans fluid will be quite a bit more sensitive than mercury. Down side to more sensitivity is the need for a taller column, although your design neatly bypasses that problem by having less fluid than will fill one column. Be interesting to see if this set up can be used for carbs that are way out of sync. Nice job!- 35 replies

My last bike was a 650 Max. Other than the standard Yamaha fuse panel and stator plug the XJs are bullet proof. Oh, wait, 2nd gen guy: If it still has glass tube fuses replace the panel, it's about to fail. I see a lot of XJs through my shop and it's always routine maintenance unless they've been neglected or abused. One thing to do is replace the rear brake shoes. Some people have had trouble with the linings delaminating due to age. In theory that can lock the rear wheel. You'll find that the engine really likes to rev, and you should let it. The engine really doesn't start to produce torque until about 3Krpm, at about 7Krpm it'll feel like you lit afterburners. At freeway speeds you're turning about 6Krpm which will take some getting used to after your V4. Seats on them are notoriously uncomfortable for anyone over the age of 29, although yours looks like it might have been customized - almost certainaly an improvement. You might want to register for the forums at www.xjbikes.com. There is a guy there that specializes in parts for them (new and used). Not only are his prices better than the dealer he stocks the parts so you'll have them in a few days rather than a week or more through the dealer. He should have your manuals too.

I had a customer bring in her V-Star with brake pads she bought on eBay. The backing plate was just a little over size and they wouldn't go in the calipers. Organic pads are cheaper and easier on the rotors. Sintered pads perform better (especially hot) but are hard on rotors.

There is a DIN cable that goes form the CB to the amp. If it's not connected you'll get the symptoms you describe. Turn on the radio, then the CB with squelch down to where the display shows reception. If the radio doesn't cut out look at the DIN cable.

Stator Replacement
MiCarl replied to Saddle_Bag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'll back up Rocket's post with 2 additions: 1 - before you pull the stator cover off look at the shift linkage behind it. It can be put back with the linkage upside down which means you will have to take it apart again. 2 - all the phillips screws under the cover (8 of them I believe) are real tough. If you don't have an impact screwdriver get one before you start. Vice grips also might grab them. I've had to drill heads off then extract the remainder of the screw from the case (you can heat them AFTER the stator is out). You might want to go ahead and have some replacement screws on hand when you start the job. -
