After talking to Don about this, I am having a back tire for my 1st gen sent to his place. Hope there is no problem fitting me in.

Did the shim replacement job myself last month. Very easy to do and as with others, it did improve my gas mileage.

Wishing you nothing but good memories. Have a great trip.

Maybe it's just my imagination or maybe it because I'm getting older but it sure seems to me like there are a lot more bad drivers on the road these days. Hope you don't have to pay higher insurance rates now Carl because of the bad driving of others.

Bought my 88VR last spring after stumbling across this forum. While Rob lives in Florida and I live in Ontario, I certainly share Rob's sentiments that he has expressed so well.

Gear Indicator / Neutral
Evan replied to tpalshadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I am also interested in any comments or advice members may have. My 88VR gradually went from showing neutral to showing 1st gear when actually in neutral with my green neutral light on. -

Congratulations Gary - Hope you enjoy - enjoy - enjoy! -
My current dream ride is to head out with my wife from Toronto to the west coast and then south to California, stopping in Calgary to spend a few days there with our grandkids. My wife has agreed to go so I am now looking to buy for a trailer for this ride. I hope to turn this dream into a reality next June.

Great news Don and many thanks for keeping us informed. You have a lot of people including myself who wish good outcomes for you because we think you truly deserve that.

Valve cover leak fix....easy!
Evan replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sounds like a great idea but for me, a bit late. I just replaced my valve cover gaskets a few weeks ago. It sure is great to have no oil leaks now. -
While I don't have anything useful to add Carl, good luck with your research and negotiations. Whatever the outcome, I hope you are happy with it.

Brian - Sounds great! I am up for this ride and I like your idea of going through the week. My availability is quite open with just a bit of notice unless I am at the cottage.

Bernie - My nephew here in Ontario does custom work with one of those huge machines. I will show him your pictures when I see him tomorrow.

electricians please help
Evan replied to curtis's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I recently had what sounds like the same problem with my 88VR. In my case, everything worked except for the headlight itself and dash light. If that is the same for you, I would highly suspect the starter switch which has two contacts, one for the headlight and one for the starter. These contacts get dirty which causes the problem. In my case, I was able to cause my headlight to come on again for a while by just wiggling the starter switch. There is an outstanding step by step 30 page summary with pictures on how to take the switch apart and clean it in teh technical library. I was shocked by how much crap had accumulated around the two terminals on the starter switch, which is the bottom switch inside the housing that also contains the kill switch, cruise switches etc. taking apart the switch box and cleaning all these switches is tedious but very doable with the instructions. In my case, Marcarl did the job and I am sure he could give you any further advice that you need. -
--- since the question is being asked, I have the same question for an 1st gen E3 tire? I recently ordered one here in Ontario and found out that the supplier only has E3's made in 2005 for a 1st gen.

This describes what we do better than I could. Two additional points. I also hold the front brake on while steadying the front when my wife climbs aboard. Also, I try to remind my wife to unplug her headset before she dismounts.

Sure would like to make it this Wednesday. Unfortunatley, I have a meeting Wednesday evening that can't be moved, so I will have to miss this one.

My side and front lowers are currently in my kitchen, but I an not sure about your specific question. These panels do not attach to each other. The front lowers attach at the top by two threaded screws (to the fairing frame I beleive). The side panels just pop into place. If you want, I can take pictures of these panels and PM or e-mail them to you.

Bob - The view from the rear end (in your pictuers) is striking and your pimping looks great. Can't wait to see the real thing! Hope that happens on May 8. Evan

I checked my carb diaphrams yesterday and found a few pinholes. Today I checked with Sirius and found that they still have these diaphrams in stock. Interested in any comments including how they fit (my bike is an 88VR), how they have worked out and how you removed the old diaphrams and installed these on your sliders - or other alternatives.

Repack Steering Head Bearings:
Evan replied to Evan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Many thanks for all the posts that were appreciated and helpful. I had the chance to spend some time with Scott (Mother) yesterday at his place. Because my steering was "sticking", that was top priority. I didn't have replacement bearings so all we could do was inspect and lubricate. We were able to do that by only removing the steering crown. No surprise - the bearings were dry and due for replacement. Scott greased the lower bearing while I removed, cleaned and repacked the upper (a la Bob and Carl's comments for repacking). My steering now feels "like new" and this should help until I replace the bearings sometime later this year. I think Yamaha's no-way-to-lubricate design sucks, and a greae fitting sounds like a good fix. We were on a roll so we kept going and checked the valve clearance (replaced two shims), replaced the two front brake callipers with an R1 and rebuilt calliper, checked the diaphrams (found some pin holes - so another job) and synced the carbs (for now) with my new Morgan tuner that works like a charm. Couldn't have done all this without Scott's help.- 16 replies
