  1. Just wanted to get some opinions, feedback and/or comments here on this idea/project. I'm putting together a 4.8" TFT Touchscreen instrument cluster for my 1983 Venture Royale Deluxe ... I want to replace the current dash/cluster with the touchscreen display that will show the following: Battery Voltage Fuel Guage with MPG reading Speed / RPMs Odometer / Tripometer Compass / GPS Turn Signals / hazards (when on) Outdoor and Engine Temp Clock with alarm Neutral Indicator (maybe indicator to show which gear as well) Side Stand / Kill Switch Indicator Burned out headlight and HI / LO tail, brake light failure indicator High beam indicator. Possibly Oil level indicator. (any additions or changes please comment and let me know) I'm also thinking that there could be a few user selectable display variations (themes). I have the electronics / programming know how to do this and I am planning on doing this for myself either way, but was wondering if others would be interested in this as well? Thanks, Jason
  2. Another post jogged my memory to ask about this. I notice on my '06 that when the low fuel indicator comes on, the mileage indicator changes to the trip meter. Is this normal? Can it be stopped? Does anyone else have this happen and do you find it a good thing?
  3. So many of you guys have a lot more mechanical wisdom than I do so I am posting this question for your opinions..... I recently went completely through my bike getting it restored (99RSV), new paint, new parts, new mods, blah blah, blah- you get the point. When we reinstalled the gas tank getting everything put back together the low fuel indicator light now stays on. The contacts appear to be good and I cleaned them for good measure(where they connect in front of the tank), still the light stays on. This morning I replaced the fuel thingy in the tank.....still same problem. Now though here's what happens: Turn key on, get correct fuel level reading on gauge momentarily then all fuel bars blink 7 times pause, blink 8 times pause, blink 8 times again, then only the top fuel bar continues to blink(the bar for totally full) none of the other bars light, meanwhile the low fuel indicator remains lit. The tank has about 5 gallons of gas in it. One more thing I will include is that I replaced all my indicator lights in the dash with LEDs which take much less wattage to operate are a lot brighter and have a long long life. What are your thoughts ?? :detective:
  4. I have a friend who is visiting with his 87 Venture. He dropped the bike on the kick stand side a couple of days ago. No apparent damage, so he rode it for an hour after. Everything was fine. Today he was heading to my house and the oil level indicator came on along with the flashing red light. His oil level is at the top of the sight glass and was changed about 1000 miles ago. Does anyone know where the sending unit is for the oil level warning or have any ideas? Thanks ..... Peter
  5. Greetings! Just traded my 05 V-Star 1100 Silverado in on a 07 Royal Star Tour Deluxe, my dream bike! One problem, when I test drove the RSTD, I was in traffic so didn't test the cruise control. Then my husband goes up and buys it for me (a total surprise!), and he didn't try it either! So now I finally get it out on the open highway and when I slide the control up and push the set button, nothing happens. The indicator light does come on, but that's it. And to keep the payments down, we bought this without a warranty. I know...live and learn. Any ideas? I also didn't get an owners manual, so any leads on obtaining one would be helpful.
  6. I"m doing the clutch slave cyl and figured I'd tackle the gear indicator issue while I was in there. Mine reads 4th gear for everything except 5th That part was not really planned cause I didn't even realize the switch was in there!! Anyway, I did the testing as per the manual and I guess the switch is bad. Any body got a GOOD shift indicator switch they want to part with? How much is a new one here in Canada? I really dont' want to try building up the contacts with solder like I read in one thread...I"d rather just change the switch. If I go ahead and do the slave cyl. and put the cover back on....do I have to order another gasket and crush washer to do the switch later or can I just re-use the "new" ones I would have just put in?
  7. My white headlamp indicator stayes on. Both low and high beam works. I've converted all my dash lights to LED. Any suggestion. This next item is probably not related to the dashlight. But I don't know Also have two allen screws left over. Have no idea where it goes. Any ideas?
  8. My low fuel indicator has stopped working. The light does not come on and the odometer does not switch to the "find a gas station, dummy!" mode. Is this an indicator that the sending unit has gone bad? Anyone had any experience with this? The gauge itself still works.
  9. I need to fix the gear indicator and have read in the tech section that I will probably need new gaskets and O-ring. Is there a good place to get them in Canada?
  10. I am now on my SECOND 86 VR, because I know that bike via 89,000 miles, at my YOUNG age of 70 getting another one just made sense! \ BOTH have had the second gear indicator light not working. The first bike was brand new. and the indicator worked for awhile. It's no big problem to me, and thanks to your posts on the second gear I will not be gentle with my second gear. Sounds like on the 86 it was well solved. Any wisdom on the light? Doubt I'll put much money out for the correction though. Just a question. Thanks to all, and all ride safe. 11. One of my front turn indicator beauty rings (chrome ring between the lens & housing) split over the winter. Wondering if anyone has an extra. I have one turn indicator visor, free (including shipping) for any member that needs one. PM me with info and I'll get it shipped off to you. Thanks, Jim
  12. The headlight indicator in the monitor on my 1983 XVZ12TK is always on when I use low-beam. The headlamp itself is on and it shines brightly, but the indicator in the monitor LCD is on and, of course, so is the flashing red LED. On high-beam, no problem. I want the red LED to warn me of real trouble. I don't want to become so accustomed to its flashing that I ignore it. So, I use high-beam all the time and crank the lamp down with the manual up-down knob to a reasonably level just to keep that annoying red LED from flashing. What I can't figure out is why this should be so. I've changed headlamps, and no change in behavior. If you have a clue, I'd love to hear it.
  13. The question has been asked a few times if there was a gear indicator available for the Royal Star Venture and the Royal Star. I have been in contact with the same company that makes the Speedohealer and they do have one that will work on our bikes. I have been 100% pleased with the Speedohealer so decided to add the gear indicator also. This is a simple plug and play device that indicates what gear you are in. I just ordered one and will give a full report on it after I receive and install it but if this is something you have been interested in, you can find the information here. They told me that we should purchase from their USA Distributor: http://www.calsportbike.com/gpx but the manufacturers website is: http://www.healtech-electronics.com/ From the info they sent to me: The GIpro X-type will work great. Part number: "GIPRO-X-color + GPX-Y01" Where 'color' is either Red or Blue Price is $132.99
  14. Has anyone used these type of PSI indicator caps on their tires? http://www.bikemaster.com/bmstrv2.nsf/Products/EE6E9572ED4BD60D86257713005D53AD?opendocument
  15. I'm not sure if I shorted something out or what, but when in Neutral the green light goes on, but the gear indicator still reads 1. Do I need to replace a fuse or something. Just a few days ago it would show N like it is supposed to. Thanks, Todd
  16. Hi, Perhaps I have gone blind but, I have looked in the various XVZ1x schematics I have and that are available here on VR.org and I am not finding info on how the dashboard gear indicator works. What I'd like to know is how does the indicator on the OEM dashboard know what gear the bike is in? What is the connection between whatever is sensing the gear in the transmission and the dashboard display? Ultimately, I'd like to know right down to wire colours and plug pin connections. I hope I am describing this clearly. Can anyone illuminate me on this, or point me to where it is shown in the schematics. Thanks, Brian H.
  17. Anybody have an extra gear position indicator switch they want to part with? And how much you want for it? Need one for my 84. All I have is one for an 83. Thanks, Bill
  18. Hey guys, Blonde has a hick up. She cuts off right after I start her up in the morning when I put her in gear. The kick stand indicator is not on the display which whenever she has trash in the switch the indicator would show the stand down even when it was not. After a few minutes of idle and picking around she will suddenly go in gear and work fine. Now once I get her on the road she might for a split second or two have a complete power loss but then be fine the rest of the ride. Any ideas what it may be? She just started this last week but seems to be getting worse. At first it was just a hick-up power loss for a fraction of a second and then ran fine. Im pulling what few hairs are left on my head out. Any ideas? She is a 1987 Venture Royale. Thanks
  19. My apologies up front if this is an incorrect post....My First. I have a 1983 Venture Royale 1200 that just now started this prob. the neutral light comes on whenever you even slightly pull in the lever - in every gear. It stays on when the lever is pulled and during shifting. the only thing I have noticed is that finding neutral seems to be harder (more touchy) than before. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Roger
  20. Does anybody make a shift indicator as an add on for an 07 rsv and if so has anyone installed and used it?
  21. One of my new turn signal dash indicator lamps I put in this winter burned out already. The original that was 20+ years old and was blackened and still worked worked forever, but a new one died in 30 miles. That's my luck. so today, I decided that I needed to replace the dash turn indicator as well as upgrade it, in bright sun I can barely see they are blinking and I need an indicator that reminds me that I'm being an old geezer riding with a signal blinking. I went to autozone and found the 194 lamps in a yellow led form. they have 4 super-bright LED's on each and they are $10.99 for 2 of them. They fit just fine and only work one way (flip it over if it does not blink.) The results were incredible. they are blindingly bright with high noon sun shining directly on them. no way to miss my blinkers are on. At night it will light me up as well as act as a side indicator to cars sitting next ot me. I'll try to post pics later of them working and the empty package. I forgot to take photos as I was doing the change.
  22. Today my battery on my 06 RSV stopped working after a 8 mile ride. While sitting in the parking lot at a park in Florida. I had shutoff the engine and left the key in ACC while I was adjusting my GPS and radio. This only took about 10 min. until I tried to start the RSV. All I heard was the clicking noise from the starter. I jumped started the RSV and rode home about 10 miles and tested the battery with a load-tester. It's just on the boarder-line, but it looks like it needs to be replaced. I'm slowly charging it now and will try again later to load test it. Questions: 1) How long does these battery last (YTX20L-BS) 12V 18 AH ? 2) What does the stamped dial indicator mean on the bottom of the battery, I have three dail indicator stamped on the bottom. The first number is 3, second 1, and third is 5. Is this battery 2005 or 4 years old? 3) The final question, what battery should I get that will last more than 2 1/2 years and should I look for a higher amp hour battery?
  23. Anybody know the part number of the indicator bulbs on the panel? I pulled my headlamp indicator bulb out recently and dropped it. Wouldn't you know I stepped on it while looking for it... I bet it still worked after the drop too!
  24. Anyboby know why the oil light on the board is lit up and the oil level is fine? I understand it is a level indicator. How would I trouble shoot and where would I look? Thanks for any help.
  25. This morning on my way in to work, my low fluid indicator light came on, on my 89. At lunch I checked the front fluid level and it was fine. I have no visible signs of fluid seepage at the front calipers and the rear is dry also. Is the indicator light also tied into the rear brake reservoir? I hope that there is a simple fix, I'm not looking forward to chasing wires! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Andrew 89 VR 01 V-star
