I have very little computer expertise, although I do have a desktop and three notebooks which I use for home and business work. Like many, I had little problem with XP in the past, and major frustrations with Vista which came on 3 of my 4 current computers. My son-in-law gave me a legitimate Window 7 Ultimate package (he is in the IT business) and I installed it a few days ago on one of my notebooks. So far, it is as stable as I recall XP was but with many significant improvements that I like more each day. Before you decide to upgrade, you can do a compatibility test in just minutes that will tell you whether any programs and/or devices such as printers may have a current compatibility problem. My experience with Vista was that there were just too many compatibility problems and it took way to long for most of those to be resolved by Microsoft or by vendors of printers etc. such as HP (and too many were never resolved). Based on my experience upgrading to Windows 7, I think the key issue for people such as myself is knowing whether any of your programs or hardware will not work.

86 VR 2nd Gear Indicator problem
Evan replied to Zfrebird4's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I can't help you with the indicator light problem but I would like to wish you many more enjoyable miles with your new VR. After 45 years of riding, I purchsaed earlier this year my 88 VR and now, like you, I would replace it with another if need be rather than something else. -
On my last two long rides, I had a cruise control problem that seemed to get worse (more frequent and consistent) as I rode. It got so that after about 5-10 minutes on cruise, it would pop out again. It would do this at different cruise speeds and while it initially seemed worse under load (on hills), it got so that it acted similar when not under load. It acted like I had cancelled the cruise setting. The on indicator light went off and the resume light came on when this happened as if I had hit the cancel switch. I could resume cruise but the problem would reoccur again after some more miles. I read with interest dingy's post yesterday on cleaning the switch which I understand could help. However, could this be just a vacuum leak that gets worse depending on load etc. and if so, is there a most likely location for that leak?

Gary, want to add my thanks for this great job you have done putting this info with pics together. I'm sure it will help many of us with 1st gen bikes, including me. In addition to my cruise cancelling on its own occasionally, my start switch recently stuck in the start position, causing some other electrical problems.

Tire change question
Evan replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I recently changed my front with a new Elite3. I found that cutting around the sidewall on each side about an inch from the rim with a sawsall was easy to do and it made breaking the bead and removing the remaining tire quite easy with the help of a clamp. Also, I used windex instead of soap based on a friend's recommendation and found it to work very well. -
I will be interested in what others have to say. In my case, with my 88VR, I haven't noticed or been bothered by any rear end noise. However, there are times (intermittent only) when I hear a disconcerting grumble when I go to neutral at a stop. Not sure of the source or if that is another common feature of our 1st gens. Overall, I love the way my 1st gen bike runs.

Same comment. Yesterday, I went through the very long list of Ontario members (15 pages). I was overwhelmed by the very large number of "Expired Trial Members". I wonder if this is caused primarily by people searching for something with no interest in the forum itself. I wouldn't want to do anything that discourages people from finding this fabulous forum, as I stumbled across it myself when searching for some Yamaha Venture information. However, assuming a lsit of expired trial members is valued, I wonder whether our member's list would be improved if the "Expired Trial Members" were somehow separated from the list of active supporting members. Maybe food for thought?

I'm told that the cost of a replacement key from Yamaha is outrageous. There are threads that deal with much cheaper options that you can search for. For example, one thread is "Need a spare key? Ace Hardware has 'em!". Since I am located in Canada (and have a 1st gen VR), I posted the following info in that thread: "Needed extra keys and went to the standard places here in Ontario (eg. CTC and Home depot) with no luck. Don't think we have Ace hardware places here. Anyway, I went to a lock and key place and for $3.00, they cut keys that work well in my 88VR using a Ilco blanc. In my case, they used a YM51 X75 blank." I suspect there is an Ilco blank that fits your scoot. Others may know what that blank code might be.

Any views or comments on whether Seafoam would also work well in my Yamaha Venture snowmobile, which has 2 stroke 700 triple?

Bob - I have been meaning to replace the headlight lens in my 88VR which has a rock chip. Any chance that you have one of these? -
Bongobob also helped me out earlier this year and he deserves our recignition.

Whats your choice for buying tires online?
Evan replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
While this question was to Gary, I can offer some info based on my recent attempts to purchase tires from US sources and have them shipped to me in Toronto. Many places such as the Motorcycle Superstore will not ship tires to Canada, although they ship other products. Those that do mostly ship by UPS. I could not find any source in the US who would ship a tire to Toronto for less than $100US. When you add that to the cost of the tire, it is hard to save compared to Canadian prices where many such as Zdeno's in Waterloo will discount MSRP's by 25%.- 12 replies

I took my radio apart on my 88VR to see if I could get the radio memory and station preset buttons to work. Couldn't see how to clean them with contact cleaner, as the station preset buttons seemed to be sealed switches. I wonder if my basis problem is most likely with the memory switch itself. I also wonder if the problem might be solder joints? Any info or suggestions?

Ben - Sure sounds like the outcome could have been much worse for your bike that you just recently repainted and especially for your neighbour. I also think the kind of support and offers for help from our fellow forum members is something special. Just one suggestion, make sure your table saw is no where close by when you do the painting this time.

I am about to buy new tires for my 88VR and I was leaning toward Shinkos until I did some more searches for reviews today (its raining here so I couldn't ride) and got the impression that the E3's will last much longer. It seems like they are both good for rain and snakes. Several have commented on the E3's cupping and being a bit noisy, although most seem to like them. Here in Ontario, I found quite a difference in quoted prices with the best prices being about $160 for the E3's and $120 for the Tourmasters which are much higher than US prices until you add the shipping costs.

Good to hear from you. There are quite a few active members in this area that participate in a number of meat and eats and other rides throughout the season. Like you, I have been riding for many years (almost 46 in my case) and just bought an 88VR this year which I am liking very much. You will see quite a bit of comments from members about 1st vs 2nd generation Ventures, and you are well positioned having owned both to set some of us straight. I am just down the road in Toronto and I look forward to meeting you.

Like most, it is cold weather rain conditions or sand/salt/ice on the road that keep me off the bike. I am more fortunate that I am located in Toronto with local temps moderated by Lake Ontario and I have indoor heated parking at our condo. As a result, I have often ride at least one day a month throughout our Canadian winters, although most of my winter rides are shorter ones.
-
Don - I have sent funds via Paypal for one mug. Thanks for taking this initiative. I hope use of the mug through our Canadian winter doesn't cause too much frustration because my VR has been put to bed for the winter.

I have read as many of the posts relaetd to tire selection as I can find and I need to decide soon. Unfortunately for me, I am located on Canada (Ontario), and tire prices are almost double those in the US and shipping costs to Canada are prohibitive. I was previoulsy thinking Elite 3 but I am surprised with the posative comments about the Shinko 230 Tourmaster on this and other sites. Here in Ontario, prices vary quite a bit, but the cheapest price for a front tire for my 88VR is about $160 for an Elite 3 and $120 for a Shinko. Interestred in comments on which way to go, as I value good performance on wet or snaked roads.

My trunk lid was badly cracked betwean and above the the hinges which I understand is a common problem with 1st gens (mine is an 88VR). I repaired the cracks and filled in a missing area of abs (about a square inch) with Plastex. That was 10,000km ago and the repair is still solid. I have never seen anything that works as well as Plastex and I agree with another response that it works as well as shown in the Plastex video.
