  1. RiderScan http://www.huntercreate.com/shop/riderscan I'm thinking about ordering one of these. I have a very well developed quick head pivot check for lane changes, turns, etc. but this will let me double check while keeping my eyes on the road in the midst of a maneuver. Lots more vids on YouTube or product website. It's kind of like safety chrome, no?
  2. I was looking for a replacement left side fairing mirror for an 85 venture. 50 or 60 bucks on ebay sounds like a lot of $$$. I see some of the goldwing aftermarket mirrors on bikebandit ($10) look awfully close. Has anyone ever tried mating one to the Venture?
  3. Folks, (On Kevin's recommendation below, let's call it: Right Front Turn Signal) My 84VR MKI had an unfortunate "garage crash" the other day for no apparent reason (aside from the sudden escape of front fork air). I had a 1x4 under the side stand (so she doesn't lean so much). I'm getting ready to replace the tires, and she'd been sitting for a couple of days since our last ride. So when I say "for no aparent reason" I mean I bent down to see just how bad the tread was on the front (cracks between the tread), and as soon as I tapped on the tire, the front end dropped 3-4 inches (air pressure had dropped to zero while she was sitting-obviously another issue), and because she had that 1x4 under the side stand, she dumped over on the right side, and crashed against a ladder hanging on a rack. The impact cracked the lens cover on the driving light, and the right mirror post. So getting on with my question: I've searched all of the service and parts manuals and can't find anything about a replacement lens. The only reference I've been able to find is a diagram calling out "driving light" ... with no parts breakdown or service procedure. So I don't know if the lens is available, or if I'm looking at replacing the whole light. Either way - no part numbers are called out. Is there a part number for the lens? And where can I find a replacement? Anybody got a used one they're willing to sell? Would also like to replace the mirror - although I can live with it for now. Any input is much appreciated.
  4. Anyone here have a stock 2nd gen left hand mirror they're not using? Larry
  5. The strangest thing happened to me today. We are in full throttle mode getting everything ready for maintenance day. Now if it was up to me, I would say "yea, things look good enough". BUT....SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED comes up with these HUGE lists of things that just MUST be done before people start arriving. So..... Today I spent about 5 hours on the weedeater. Now I use a 4 stroke Toro weedeater and it IS a little heavy but I swear it gets heavier every year. So I trimmed for about 5 hours and this thing just beat me to death. Now this is the first time I've used it this year but I've used it many times in the past. I just don't remember it beating me up so bad. So I finally got finished with most of the trimming and was surprised at how tired I was. I went in the house, had a big glass of ice water and then went up to take a shower. It was then that I realized what had happened. I glanced in the mirror and there was an old geezer in there. I don't know where the heck he came from but it about scared me to death. How the heck did he get in my mirror?????? I got over the initial shock and got in the shower. When I was finished and had gotten dressed again, I gathered up my courage and took another look in that mirror and the old fart was gone. Now it still wasn't no youngster staring back at me but things were a little better. The only thing is, that old fart left some aches and pains when he left. What's up with that?
  6. ok, so if your tall like me (6'3), you might have some problems with 1st gen mirrors. i do. i see mostly shoulder, and that wasnt cutting it any longer. i had a difficult time finding mirrors for our ride that have a 1" center-to-center mounting. in fact, i couldnt find any at all. several hours worth of research later, and i decided to do this: i used the old mounts, bought some mirrors from Dennis Kirk (after looking through dozens of them!), and hooked em up!. the mirrors came in a pair for 16.00 plus shipping. i like the price as well as, the cool 80's look they have. they are EMGO ROADHAWKS. first, i removed the old mirror from the mount. then, i drilled out the hole to hold the new mirror. fit perfectly, except....you cant fit a 10mm nut in there. so...i drilled out a space for the nut to fit in, being careful to not drill it out fully. i didnt want the nut to spin around. problem solved! a little finessing, some locktite and final adjustments....VOILA! custom mirrors. enjoy!
  7. I was looking at my 84 after I made the side cover block offs & something didn't look right. It finally hit me the plates where the rear foot pegs bolt on need some dressing up. The black with the ribs was to plain. I decide chrome would accent it nicely but as you all know, I could not find anything for this bike. When I was at Walmart, I noticed this for $6.95: It's basically a plastic mirror which is attached with double face tape. It cuts easily with a scissor. I took a piece of butcher paper & traced the opening I wants to chrome. Made the template & I cut the mirror. I used a regular scissor for the straight runs & a cuticle scissor for the tight bends. Here's the finished look: Though I would share!
  8. I was unhappy with the positioning of my mirrors after putting the Flanders bars on my RSTD. Seemed like I had to turn my head too far to look at the mirrors. So I bought some bar clamps and moved the mirrors forward as seen in these pictures. Had to buy some mirror stems because I could not find any metric reverse thread nuts for the stock stem that required it. Now I only have to slightly turn my head !
  9. I thought this might be of interest to you GL1800 0wners. Installation is fairly easy. 1 Remove the screw through the bottom of the housing. You'll need a good phillips screwdriver, the factory screw has loctite. 2 Wiggle the mirror while pulling it toward you. It will slide out eventually. On the bench the factory mirror is on the right. 3 Mirror housing with mirror removed. 4 From the front of the motorcycle, peel back the rubber boot to expose the wires and connector. 5 The wires are long enough to pull out in order to install the supplied harness. You have to lift the catch on the factory connector to disconnect it. 6 New harness connected, ready to fish through to the inside of the mirror housing. 7 Muth mirror turn signal connector protruding into the mirror housing. A little tricky to get it in there, just be patient and work with it. 8 Wires connected, I have them on top to better show them. Actual installation was with wires laying on the bottom of the housing. The extra length of wire was pulled back to the outside of the mirror housing and stored inside the fairing by the rubber boot. 9 Carefully slide the assembly into place, making sure the two tabs at the top are properly inserted into the factory bracket. Install the supplied screw. Viola!!! A turn signalling mirror.
  10. I'm driving in the center lane of three, I look in my left mirror and see a car what seemed to be plenty of room behind me to change lanes. I believe I turned my signal on and started moving to the left when I hear a clicking sound coming from the left side of my bike. Now as I look to the left I see the car that was in my rear view mirror right beside me with my newly installed highway peg doing the chariot thing on her front wheel. Thank the LORD that HE gave me the ability to remain calm and move slowly to the right away from the car that I was sharing the lane with. She slowed down, I moved ahead of her and we made a left hand turn off the road to talk. She the driver of the car asked if I was OK (I don't know yet how I was not shaken) I said yes as I looked at my peg and realized it was somewhat OK. We then looked at her car with a few scratches in the clear coat of her wheel and missing center cap. She's saying lets just exchange info and is gesturing that I pay for her loss. So, I reply lets call the police so the blame can be appropriately charged. She replied "Are we really going to do this" and I said do what? She said she had a good relationship with her dealer and she would be reasonable and did we really want to involve the law and spend a few hours doing it. I said OK and it probably was a wise decision once I was away from the scene but, I still am wondering why she was so adamant about no police. As I reflect I was at fault because I was the one changing lanes, I almost always look over my shoulder along with looking in the mirror and this is the reason why. Again thank GOD it could have been worse.
  11. As my mirror on the right side fell of the bike in my hand today while I was trying to adjust it I figured what the hack I'll atempt to fix it instead of buying a new one. Turned out pretty good. First I removed the glass from the black retainer buy using an exacto knife to remove the front edge as i found out the glass is not glued in. Second I removed the black retainer by taking out 3 small phillips screws. Third I drilled out the bracket still on the bike to let a 1/4 inch by 1 1'2 screw pass through. Then installed the base of the mirror with the 1/4 in screw using two 1/4 inch washer on the inside of mirror. Pic will show 6 but had to take back apart becouse the black retainer wouldn't go back in place with all 6 washers.Next was the black base screwed back in place followed by the glass. As I removed the retaining ring with the exacto knife I used 5 minute epoxy to hold the mirror in place. I'll post back tommorow as to how well this holds up as we have a ride planned for a couple of hours by the Petty Museum. Hope this works as well as I think it will as it was easy enough for a non mechanic like me to do. Just take your time with the removal of the glass so as not to break it. David
  12. Had a little oopsie today and cracked the swivel part of the mirror. The base is still good and no other damage to the bike. Had a quick search on eBay and did not find any for sale. Found a few old threads referring to tapping the base for aftermarket MC mirrors or perhaps using Ford Ranger mirrors, 91 or earlier I think. Anyone done either of these mods? Only 14 days before I need to leave for Cody and I'm having a panic attack.
  13. I have a scratched one but would prefer a mirror that isnt so beat up. Thanks, Ray
  14. FINALLY...THE BLONDE JOKE TO END ALL BLONDE JOKES! A blonde woman was speeding down the road in her little redsports car and was pulled over by a woman police officer, who was also a blonde. The blonde cop asked to see the blonde driver's license. She dug through her purse and was getting progressively moreagitated. 'What does it look like?' she finally asked. The policewoman replied, 'It's square and it has your picture on it.' The driver finally found a square mirror in her purse, looked at it and handed it to the policewoman. 'Here it is,' she said. The blonde officer looked at the mirror, then handed it back saying, "OK, you can go. I didn't realize you were a cop.
  15. My brother bought my '88 VR and before he had a chance to ride it after he got it home his area was hit with the tornadoes on April 27th. He was fortunate in that he had only minor damage to his home. His bike was in his shed but was blown over and the windshield and right side mirror were both broken. I had a spare windshield luckily and have already set him up with that. He still needs a right side mirror. If anyone has a spare please let me know what you would need for it and I'll be happy to pay a reasonable price for it. We have tried ebay but have been outbid. We'll keep trying, but I thought someone here may have a spare lying around... Thanks! Don yamadawg
  16. I'm looking for one of those to put on the sidecar (which will make my wife happy). I know JCWhitney has some very basic ones, but I am looking for a door mount style with a cone shaped housing. I need the right hand side one. Every website I have gone to either requires a log in or asks for a make and model. They just don't seem to list my sidecar. A friend of mine has an old car sitting in a barn but he seems reluctant to let me pull the mirror off. Something about it being worth 60K (as is). If you have one of this style mirrors lying around and want to part with it shoot me a pics and price; if you're better at surfing the web and finding this kind of stuff, I'd appreciate the link. Y'all have a great weekend, riding tomorrow!! :happy65:
  17. I have an 84 VR, and am wondering how many had the same mirror base. If enough people were interested, I am looking to have the base moulded, so I can mount any mirror. If you read this and are interested, can you spread the word (this could be cost effective)
  18. If anyone is looking for a left mirror, I have a place for you to look. Also if anyone knows where I can find a right mirror that would be great. Contact this person. They are in BC, Canada. Good price $20. Good luck countrymotorsport@gmail.com
  19. After living in the remote wilderness of West Virginia all his life, an old hillbilly decided it was time to visit the big city. In one of the stores he picks up a mirror and looks in it. Not ever having seen one before, he remarked at the image staring back at him, "How about that! Here's a picture of my Daddy." He bought the mirror thinking it was a picture of his Daddy, but on the way home he remembered his wife didn't like his Father, so he hung it in the barn, and every morning before leaving for the fields, he would go there and look at it. His wife began to get suspicious of these many trips to the barn. One day after her husband left, she searched the barn and found the mirror. As she looked into the glass, she fumed: "So that's the ugly thing he's been running around with." SHHHHHH don't anybody say I posted this!!!!!
  20. Brown Sugar is back at home again. She is so tickled that she got a roof over her head again she is grinning from mirror to mirror. I peaked in on her and even saw her turning cart-wheels, popping wheelies, spinning donuts and front wheel stands. I guess there is no place like home......
  21. I removed the Trunk Mirror out of the trunk so I could fix the mirror hinges. In so doing the 4 mirror bolts dropped somewhere into the Back Rest. I was wonder if someone can point me to a thread as to how best to retrieve the Trunk Mirror Bolts. I searched for Trunk Mirror but found nothing very helpful.
  22. Well, I became a supporting member Wed, and Thurs I went down, so I guess I gotta send another donation in. I was on my way to work and people were all and out not driving worth a darn. I had to slam on the brakes and one second later I'm sliding on my left side. Probably was going 25-30 mph. Helmet got some scratches, jacket, glove and boot just got some "character" added to them, pants got a small hole. Bike lost it's left mirror, sanded some paint off and chipped the edge of the turn signal. Highway peg, saddlebag bar, and pipe took most of the abuse and had the most wear. Guy behind me stopped, helped me right it, and push it to a nearby parking lot. Me, I got some bruises on my left side, some rug burn most likely from my shirt moving (jacket kept it from being road rash) but the worst injury was my RIGHT thumb must have hit something because it was swelling and hurt like a sob. Wife picked me up and took me to the dr. Nothing broken, just sprained. But now I can't grab the throttle. So after work, I had a buddy come and drive it home for me. Started ok, rode fine, he liked the power of it (1st gen rule!). So for now, I put in on winter insurance, will have to fix the mirror, I want to repaint & repair all the cracks in the fairing, and will de-link the brakes, which is what I'm sure put me down. My son asked if I was getting rid of it. I told him "No way". -Andrew
  23. I just finished mounting and wiring my rear view camera and display today, and it works like a charm!! Now I can see the whole world behind me right up to my trunk!! With the type of driving Ido, which is a lot of interstates as well as main roads, I have my left and right mirrors adjusted the way they would be on a cage, with the right miror looking down the lane on my right, and the left mirror down the left lane. I have a pair of parabolic mirrors on each mirror which helps the view directly behind me but not as good as I like. Now with the camera and display I can see everything I want and need to see!! Glad I made Becky buy me this for my birthday last month...:wow:
  24. Howdy folks. All was going well. I was on the way back to where I was staying from where I work so that I could drop off my stuff and go get a bite to eat. There is a ramp that goes down below to the parking garage area. Someone decided it was a good idea to wash off the concrete and not tell anyone (one of the housekeepers just doing as they were told). Well, for a 4 wheeled car, it would have been no big deal. For someone on 2 wheels, I might as well have been driving on ice. I'm fine, but my windshield snapped off when the bike hit the ground. The front crash bar was bent a little bit, but other than that, I don't see any other damage (some how my mirror got twisted around too). While I was standing next to my bike and looking around, the little housekeeper comes sprinting across the garage and puts down a 'caution, wet floor' sign right next to my bike. Thanks for the warning lady. Ug. SO, if anyone nearby has a windshield they would be willing to let go for cheap, let me know - I'm more than likely interested. EDIT: By the way it is a 2001 RSV
  25. FWIW, here are a couple of pics of the final version of my mirror mount mod: Billet Aluminium mirror mount http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad39/UxHamby/vehicles/bike3/7204bc1f.jpg?t=1276049880 Mirrors from Ebay http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad39/UxHamby/vehicles/bike3/79c1c8ab.jpg?t=1276050706 I think they look good and the new mirrors have worked out much better than my old OEM mirrors which just wouldn't stay put anymore. Hope this if of interest. Cheers, Brian H.
