  1. I get an uncomfortable feeling when riding alone in the twisties and my phone has NO SERVICE. Can you relate? Well there is a fix for that feeling. It is the satellite connected Personal Locator Beacons- SOS type button to summon the Calvary - but you don't always need search and rescue, just a gallon of gas or a ride on the back of a flat bed. Here is my review on a great product that really stands out among the competition. I hope you enjoy the read as much as I enjoyed writing it @cowpuc. 2. RiderScan http://www.huntercreate.com/shop/riderscan I'm thinking about ordering one of these. I have a very well developed quick head pivot check for lane changes, turns, etc. but this will let me double check while keeping my eyes on the road in the midst of a maneuver. Lots more vids on YouTube or product website. It's kind of like safety chrome, no?
  3. I got a new dog to guard my house. It was a little more than I thought I should pay but I think when word gets out I'll be a relatively crime free neighborhood. The nice part is he is a year old and already fully trained. For your safety you might want to call the house from the driveway and in the safety of your car!
  4. Got this from a member (with his permission) off the GL1800Riders board. Thought it was a good "guide" for all to consider when parking your scoot in a parking lot with the trailer hooked up for safety. http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/SilvrT/minimumriskparkinga1.jpg
  5. Hope everyone is enjoying riding season...I know we are. My lovely bride & I are starting to look at safety gear (Jackets & Pants). What safety gear do ya'll wear? We are looking for something that is cool enough to wear in the heat but yet strong enough to protect us if we go down. It seems so confusing. Thanks, Melvin
  6. Don't know if everyone is aware of this program by Allstate to push motorcycle safety. http://www.allstatenewsroom.com/channels/News-Releases/releases/allstate-installs-permanent-warning-signs-to-promote-motorcycle-safety-at-dangerous-intersections-1
  7. how many MI riders going to Freebirds on June 2? we should meet up! safety in numbers!!!
  8. The following is a BC Provincial Govn't new announcement. Moderators feel free to delete if you deem necessary. VICTORIA – To mark the beginning of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the Province is announcing new safety regulations aimed at improving road safety and reducing motorcycle deaths, injuries and crashes. Effective June 1, all motorcycle riders and their passengers must wear helmets that meet safety industry standards. This means motorcycle riders will no longer be able to wear novelty helmets, typically known as skid lids, skull caps or beanies, which do not meet the new requirements. In addition, the new regulations: · Will require passengers, including children, to place their feet on foot pegs or floorboards. Drivers can easily be thrown off balance and risk crashing if their passengers do not keep their feet fixed on foot rests. Children who are unable to reach foot rests will no longer be allowed to ride as passengers. · Will improve visibility and enforcement for police. The font size on motorcycle licence plates has increased by 0.95 centimetres (3/8 of an inch). Since May 2011, all new motorcycle licence plates have been issued with the larger font. In making the announcement, Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond said the provincial government intends to move forward with a graduated licensing program that includes power restrictions, following additional consultation to determine the best model. Feedback will be considered along with research and best practices to develop a model that improves rider safety and reduces motorcycle crashes especially for new riders. The Office of Motor Vehicles and ICBC will also partner on an awareness campaign to ensure automobile drivers are aware of how to drive safely when they encounter motorcycles on the road. The goal is to reduce fatalities and injuries from crashes involving motorcycles. While motorcycles are estimated to make up about three per cent of insured vehicles in B.C., they account for approximately 10 per cent of road fatalities. In the last five years, 203 motorcyclists have lost their lives on B.C.’s roads and 5,172 have been injured. Motorcycle fatalities increased by about 57 per cent between 1996 and 2010. The new rider safety regulations are the result of extensive consultations between the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, BC Coroners Service, ICBC, police and other road safety partners to develop a comprehensive approach to improve motorcycle safety within the motorcycling community and industry. The month of May will allow for a transition period that will give government time to move to the new laws by informing riders and the public about the upcoming changes. Starting June 1, police will begin enforcing the new laws and issuing educational materials to riders found violating the helmet and seating regulations. Fines for all new helmet-related offences are $138, and fines for seating requirements range from $109 to $121. In addition to fines, riders violating seating requirements will have their motorcycles impounded.
  9. Safety not Saftey. True story on MLive today; A 42-year-old Grand Blanc Township man may do well with a refresher course on gun safety. The man was hunting small game in Grand Blanc Township on Sunday when he tied his shotgun on a rope so he could carry it up a tree. Nothing could possibly go wrong with that plan, right? As he was making his way up the tree, the hunter dropped the gun and it went off. Repeatedly. The first shot his left leg, followed by another shot that hit his right leg. Ouch. He was able to crawl out to a nearby road where a relative came to his aid. He was taken to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition. He later told police he thought the shotgun's safety was on. Officers then informed him it's probably not the best idea to tie the rope around the trigger. On the bright side, the Department of Natural Resources came out and ruled it a hunting accident and that the man had not broken any laws. http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2012/02/offbeat_unsafe_gun_use.html

  11. Has anyone installed a "Rear View Safety Camera System" on their Venture? If so how is it working for you?
  12. Hey Vancouver Island riders. The last week two riders were killed on the Malahat high-way {cars crossing centerline} In case you have not heard there is a ride from Ogden Point to the Parliment Buildings this Saturday. It is an impromtu ride , not organized by any particular group to reinforce the call to divide the highway for the safety of all drivers. Muster up at 3 pm at Ogden, then about 3:30 at the Parliment for some speakers and a moment of silence etc. Cheers, Gary
  13. ting these next weekend. I think these will look nice and add a safety factor. http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=558&cat=199&page=1
  14. I failed a Health and Safety course at work today. One of the questions was: "In the event of a fire, what steps would you take?" "Friggin big ones" was apparently the wrong answer.
  15. Beaumont Hamel Unit of 2nd CAV (http://2cav.thecav.ca/www.2cav.thecav.ca/Beaumont_Hamel/beaumonthamel_index.htm) will be hosting our annual Support the Troops ride in St. John's NL, CA. This year we are raising funds for a "Wandering Garden" at the LA Miller Centre Veterans Pavilion. When we held the announcement of the event, some of the staff at the center suggested they might want to ride along as passengers. Some of them have never been on a motorcycle before so I thought we should have a safety briefing and I wrote up the following: Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome aboard today's Support the Troops ride from St. John's to Holyrood and return. We will be travelling at an ass-altitude of 24 to 30 inches for pilots, and 30 to 36 inches for passengers, at a cruising speed somewhere within whistling distance of the posted speed limit. For your safety we reccomend that you remain in your seat for the duration of the ride. Each motorcycle is equipped with a 360 degree emergency exit system. In the unlikely event of an emergency, and at the direction of your pilot, please feel free to exit the motorcycle in the direction of your choice. Should you need to speak with your pilot during the ride, either (1) shout really loud, or (2) jab him or her in the ribs until he or she pulls over. Due to the short duration of this morning's ride there will be no in-ride food or beverage service, but food and beverages will be available for purchase at the brief mid-point stopover in Holyrood. You may be asked to exit the motorcycle during the stopover as it may be necessary for your pilot to (a) refuel, (b) add oil, © tighten or re-attach loose or missing parts, (d) polish chrome, and/or (e) walk about complaining about his or her sore ass. This is a non-smoking ride (unless your pilot smokes), and, although none of the motorcycles is equipped with a washroom, you may be assured that if they were, they would be equipped with a smoke detector for your safety. Lastly, we realize that you have a wide range of choices to show your support for your troops, and we wish to thank you most sincerely for choosing to ride with the CAV. Details about the ride, and the veterans pavilion can be found at http://www.healthcarefoundation.ca/events-programs/ride-for-veterans If it is in your heart to support this cause I would appreciate your clicking the "Find a Rider" button on the ride-for-veterans page, click "B" and then the "Donate Now" link under "Spencer Barnes".
  16. Ok folks, I think I may be outa my mind. I am a scooter rider (SYM RV250) and wish to upgrade and get more power and do a bit our touring with my wife. Am I biting off more than I can chew by looking to ride this big-boys bike? My only experience with a clutch bike was the Highway Patrol's safety course. I have been riding my scooter for 6 months. Should I be looking at something a bit smaller and work my way up to this bike? Thanks Ken
  17. I dont know if anyone else is interested in this or not, but here goes. There are almost 12,000 members on this board. Does yamaha monitor this forum? If not they should. Here is a group that not only owns these bikes but take the time to share their ideas. The 2nd generation Venture is basically the same as 12 years ago, it's got to be time for an update. I love a lot of things about my bike but would like to see some modernizing. So I will offer my ideas. I welcome challenges to my opinions and input from others. maybe Yamaha will keep some of these ideas in mind when they develope the next generation. here is a start: ADD Fuel Injection. Improve economy (A BMW with the same weight and displacement can get 55 MPGs). Better cold starts. No more cleaning carbs. Etc, etc… Hydraulic Valves. No more adjusting. Longevity. ABS. Safety. Insurance rates. Linked Brakes. Safety. Insurance Rates. Adjustable Windshield. Ala BMW and Kawasaki. Because they are awesome! Adjustable Handlebars. They just don’t fit everyone. 3rd Brakelight. Safety. Insurance rates. Tachometer. Self Explanitory. Other Guages. Nice to have. Temp, Volts, Air Pressure. Gear Indicator. The bike is quiet. When I ride next to Harleys I forget which gear I am in. The Tachometer will help with this also. On board Air Compressor. Can adjust suspension. Have air for flats. (If not an onboard compressor at least link the front and then rear shock air system together so they can be equally adjusted) No Roll Back Clutch. Subaru used to make one. This is a heavy bike. Loaded down with passenger and luggage, in traffic, on a hill sometimes it is a monster to take off. It must be able to be disengaged with a thumb button right next to the clutch lever so the bike can be moved around a parking lot. This will give you something the competition does not offer. Delete Cassette Player. Self Explanitory Keep V-4 .Everyone has a twin. Seat. The best stock one out there IMHO

  19. Hello Everyone: Thanks to everyone who recommended the Signal Dynamics 100 LED tail light upgrade. Mine arrived today. 5 Minutes installation or less. Very impressed!!! This should be the very first SAFETY item added to any bike. Thanks again.....Mark
  20. Got a postcard from the local Star dealer for a test ride on an 2011 Stryker. If you take the test ride you get a pair of Oakley sunglasses. The bike only had 3 miles on it.... well I fixed that. You really shouldn't tell me to "take it all afternoon if you want", because I want. It handled really well for the amount of frt rake. More than enough power for me and I didn't have to pay for fuel. It was a good day. Except I left Brenda at the showroom alone with all that "safety chrome" around for her Classic. It would have been cheaper to stay home and just by the Oakleys online. Below is the link to the test ride offer if anyone is interested. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/stryker_demo_promo.aspx
  21. I have added a little safety chrome. (and hitching) (and lighting) (and shifting)
  22. more safety stuff!!! and for the Yamaha too! http://www.ridesafer.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=RS0200 you know you all need one or more:mo money: dray
  23. All of these safety switches I just cant get the starter switch to work, I still start the bike but I have a switch hooked to the starter relay (solenoid) and the + post on the battery. It works but if it doesn't start right away well all those amps going thru a 10 Gage wire the smoke starts puffing and soon there's fire. I bought a new right hand throttle Assembly from a site member so I'm sure the starter switch is good. All the possable relays and safety switches are mind boggling, kick stand, clutch, neutral switch on and on. On my riding lawn mower the first thing I do is bypass them. Is there any way to bypass all these switches and just get the starter switch to work or a way to rig a switch up to get the job done. I know the switches are there for safety reasons but as far as I'm concerned if you don't know your in neutral or the kick stand is up you probably shouldn't be riding the bike any way. Any help would be greatly appreciated its been a tough few years and the funds are tight so I really need a cheap quick fix if there is one. Thanks Pete
  24. I am putting together a day in New London Mo (63459), looking at March on a Sunday. Going to have reps from dealers and be showing the Ride like a pro DVD series at no cost. As I get all the details I will update. So anyone who is near my area think it over. Should be some good eats, good times, and a heck of a riding safety training session.
  25. My loving bride got me alittle safety chrome..... now I gots to install them!!
