  1. Just saw your post about this terrible event. While I missed your moment of silence, I hope the group of Venture riders in the UK knows from these respones (from Americans and Canadians like me) that our thoughts are with you all. Hope you can communicate this on our behalf.
  2. Don - You can count on me for another one and I hope the responses are more than you need to proceed.
  3. I have teh opposite problem. One of my turn signals dosen't cancel most of the time. While I can manually cancel it, it is much nicer when it works properly. Does anyone have any advice for this problem?
  4. Other forum members have used a product called Plastex for repairing ABS. BAsed on their adevice, I have used it and and found it to be unbelievably good for ABS repairs. I beleive there is a Plastex website that will give you more info.
  5. A good friend - known as Mother on this forum - lent me a video called Riding Like a Pro by Jerry Palladino. Even though I am your age (in a few weeks) and I have been riding for 45 years, I got a lot from this video. He has one segment in the video about uprighting a bike back up after it goes and in brief, it is all about technique rather than size/strength. He illustrates this by having his wife upright a HD police bike using the technique that he describes. Good luck and enjoy!!
  6. Any chance you also have a luggage rack? Please PM me with details if so.
  7. All this reminds me of one of my own cold day riding experiences. I rode back to the college I was attending many years ago in cold weather. As I gor closer, the temp fell below freezing. The ride itself was not bad. However, when I arived and dismounted, to my sudden surprise my legs were so cold that I didn't have the strength to hold up the bike. Like mmost others (and as I have aged), I now don't like to ride in weather below around 40".
  8. Fabulous Story --- the type of experience that many of us hope for some day but seldom are lucky enbough to actually experience it. It also shows that it pays to check things out.
  9. Don - Like so many others I have got to know you most through the forum and your maintenance days enough to know that you are an amazing and generous person. Your update is truely appreciated and I hope it gives you some comfort to know that so many people that you have toutched like myself are thinking and praying for you.
  10. I relate to what Carl has said and what I would add that in my case (88VR), it only takes a minute or so for a smooth throttle response.
  11. Interedsting posts from different areas. Here is Ontario, we have had one of the coldest and wettest summers on record up until the end of August. Since then, it has been much warmer and sunnier than normal. However, fall is definitely setting in and the colours are starting to emerge. Makes for some of the most dramatic riding of the season if the weather holds out, although this week is mostly rain.
  12. Wayne - Would love to ride tonight but just can't get away.
  13. I wanted to buy a 1st gen this spring but had never owned/rode one before so I also was not sure what to look for. While I rode and liked the first one I checkled out, there were just too many little things that left me with some doubt. I passed on that one and shortly after that, found another to check out. Riding it immediately made me realize that my gut feel was right on. Also, by then, I had read a large number of posts which gave me much more confidence that I could fix some of the visible problems without spending a fortune. There are some great posts in the technical library and it is sure easy to seach for relevant ones. I know this isn't very specific, but I hope it helps. Good luck with your decision.
  14. Carl - I don't know the exact year but it looks to be in great condition for its age. Also, I bet a few rides help remind you of how great the VR is on the highway (and how heavy it is to move around). I found the difference betwean my old PC800 and my 88VR much greater than expected.
  15. Wayne - If we are not at the cottage working on what needs to be done (like shingling a roof), Anne and I will do our best to join you. Hope you have a great day in any event.
  16. So sorry Anne and I were not able to join you folks for this ride, but glad you had a great day!
  17. Glad you asked RDHC as I have the same question. I put Amsoil in the 88VR that I bought earlier this year and am about to change it at around 8000km. I phoned the tech people at Amsoil and they say that Amsoil mc oil does not need to be changed until double the reccomended change interval by Yamaha I am not reccomending that, just reporting what they claim. Also, my own experience seems to differ from others in that my shifting (especially into neutral) seems to be getting smoother with more miles, at lest so far.
  18. This question reminded me of how I hated wearing a helmet for the first few years after they passed a helmet law back in the late 60's here in Ontario. Amazing how you can get used to something once you have to.
  19. Wayne and Robin - Congratulations on this silver anniversary milestone. I rode almost 400 km to get back home today and arived in TO after 6:00 so Anne and I just couldn't make it to what I hope was a very enjoyable ride with friends on this special occasion.
  20. Dang it - I love to ride with you all and we would be there for sure if it wasn't for the holliday weekend date. Like others I suspect, Anne and I have long had plans for that weekend that I don't think we can break.
  21. Great post to stimulate good memories. Makes me regret not keeping better track of the types of bikes I've had since I can't recall many of the specifics. Anyway, back in 62, I was riding a bicycle 22 miles a day to get to a riding stable (my first love was horses) and bought a 50cc Allstate scooter to replace the bicycle. Then through highschool, rode everywhere on a Honda 90 305 Dream. One of bikes I liked best since then was my Kawasaki KZ650. Never been withoiut at least one bike since 62, inlcuding a Triumph 650 TR6, a Suzuki Titan 500, a Honda 750 Magna and PC800 etc. Like my current 88VR best of all partly because of this forum and the kind of people I am meeting as a result.
  22. I recently installed two sets of J&M speakers in an open face helmet. Very easy to do and it took only a few minutes with my helmets which, like most open face helmets, have an area without foam or padding in the ear area. The headset kit comes with a sticky velcro patch that you place in this area inside the helmet. You then position the speakers and hold them in place with matching velcro.
  23. Sorry I missed the poll. I was given a Venture rider guardian bell by a member when I first bought my 88VR this spring. During Maintenance Day, I gave a bell to another member who had been riding without one. Anyone interested should read the note that comes with and explains the Guardian Bell. Among other things, it explains how potholes in the road are related to the devil.
  24. After hearing lots of good commetns from riders here in Ontario, I bought the same for my wife and I and we are very happy with their quality - the purchase price here in Ontario was just under $100 each.
  25. I had another cassette lid problem. As I recall, my 88VR spring loaded hinge mechanism (that pops out the cassettes) is attached to the CD cover by way of friction fit over four small plastic lugs on the cover. Two or three of these plastic lugs broke off the cover and as a result, I could not open or close the cover properly. I tried gluing the lugs back in place, with some success.
