  1. I put an "I" basket in my scoot which quieted it down really well. Until I dragged (or is it drug?) my trailer 400 miles and then it got progressively louder, to the point where it may be louder than it was before the "I" basket. So, now I'm going to look at this from a different angle. Has anyone considered some type of sound deadening coating on the clutch cover to maybe lower the amount of transmitted whine? I'm still researching this, but I do know that what ever coating used would have to take a bit of heat as the side cover gets fairly warm. Maybe some of that pick up bed liner. I figured that I'd pick up a spare cover to play with from Ebay. Yesterday I was experimenting with sound deadening foam. I taped a large piece to the lower fairing area as there seems to be a lot of sound bouncing from that area with no luck. No matter how much foam I taped or wrapped around the right side of the bike, it stayed just as whiney. Now to the next idea. I have my old "G" basket and I'm toying with the thought of having the teeth on this basket "machined" slightly. Maybe a small grove cut in the center of the teeth of the primary driver gear would change things enough to lower the whine. Or possibly a slight radius to the top of the teeth. Anybody with a metal working background have any thoughts on any of this? I'm going to stop and talk to the local high performance engine builder on Thursday to see what they say. Thoughts?
  2. Can't believe this happened but last night as I was pulling off the carbs, I attempted to sit my butt down on an empty 5 gal pail I use when working on bikes, and I missed. I could not avoid my falling backwards. All I could do was brace myself for the hit on the concrete floor. But when I landed on my back, I also landed on the lower left fairing piece that I had sitting nearby and it shattered into several pieces. Lesson learned; pay more attention when sitting on something used for working on the bike, or, move all items far enough away from the bike so you don't land on them if you do fall. Now then, does anyone have a lower left fairing for a 1st edition; any color? I've looked on E-Scam and none are listed. I will pay whatever. Thanks all. MasterGuns
  3. Hey Guys, I need some help. You would have thought as many RSV fork springs that I have replaced this past year, that I would have already done this, but I just haven't For anyone that still has stock springs in their RSV and has a motorcycle lift that takes the front wheel completely off the ground, I need your help. I need you to get me the static sag measurement of just the bike as follows: 1. Lift the bike completely off the ground to where the forks are extended all the way out. 2. Take a 4" length of masking tape place it on the right lower fork leg with one end slipped slightly under the top cover. 3. Now use the bottom of the top fork cover as a guide and draw a line on the tape. 4. Now let the bike down on the jack to where the bike is resting completely on the ground and slightly off the jack. 5. Holding the right handlebar to steady the bike, use the upper fork tube as a guide and draw another line. 6. Lift the bike back up and peel the tape off the lower fork leg Now you have a piece of tape with 2 lines on it. Measure that distance and you have the bike's static sag. I need that distance, please. Thanks, Rick I have attached a picture of this tape on the fork lower so you can see what I'm talking about.
  4. Does anyone know where I can buy chrome lower wind deflectors that mount in front of the forks? Like to replace the clear deflectors.
  5. And the hits just keep on coming. So the battery showed up today (thanks skydoc_17) and I put it in and she fired right up. Just as a double check since I was there I checked for charging voltage and I only had 12.30. I increased the idle and it only went up .2-.3 volts and the longer it ran the lower the voltage dropped. My background being with cars not motorcycles I'm asking here, where do you start with these? Is there fuses for the charging system on these or do I go straight to the regulator?
  6. I would like to inquire of those who have removed the front lower fairing leg on what they feel was the benefit and or what they regret or miss? I would also like to ask if anyone has blocked the front fairings air vent and again what they regret or miss? The purpose of these question is that I am still building my 85 project and am considering using the air intakes for the lower legs to mount a set of auxillary running lights in. In this forums opinion the pros and cons? I ask as I want to see if anyone else will come up with something I have not thought of or overlooked. I am considering installing a set of lamp in the least obtrusive location. Thanks in advance to all who reply and share their thoughts and opinions.

    Air Deflectors

I just bought a new RSV. I am looking for a solution to reducing the air flow off my upper legs. Is there a vent / deflector out there to cut some of the air? In the summer, not a problem. In the winter, I can see this will be a cold spot on my legs. I checked the Yamaha catalog and they have a set that mount on the outside of the lower fairing. This is great for the lower legs. Thanks.
  8. I've heard 30 mpg, 35, and I've heard of a Venture getting 40 mpg. Before the ignitech, I was getting 33-35 MPG. Now its 28-31 MPG with the ignitech. I haven't purified my Air Cleaner--again, its also a K&N. But what else? Is it something the Ignitech TCI is doing? I KNOW 100% I am running RICHER than I should be, as I can hear the popping and firing in the H-Pipe in the lower RPMs (2-2.5) it cleans up, but I noticed I got 32 MPG ridding her in the high RPMs, vs the lower RPMs yesterday. I rode from Hanford to Madera, and coming back I had enough gas to 2 up my sister from Hanford to Tulare, filling up on Huston and 99's Shell Station. I'd like to have my 35 back, or heck the 40 would be nice. I'm not going to take apart my carbs and chk the diaphragms, or sliders just yet... not until I've got replacements. Just in case they're the issue. Though She is running better now with the SeaFoam. Or am I hoping too much from the ol' Gal?

    road trip

looks like i'll be making a little road trip if everything works out the way I hope. the "big" question is which way to go, my choices are either I40 East from CA to SC or stay a little lower and take I 10 and I 20. any thoughts? I want to do this in three days if possible (2300+ miles) -- hmm, maybe four:hihi:
  10. Does the front wheel have to be removed to lower the front end (2008 venture)?
  11. Need a Right side lower cowling for 2000 RSV MM. Looked on Pinwall Cycle Parts with out any luck. Couple of web sites show they can get the part, but being a 12 year old bike I'm concerned that Yamaha would even have any of these left. Does anyone have any sugestions where I might look, or someone, on the outside chance, have one laying around they don't need?
  12. On my last road trip, my right lower wind deflector bracket broke on my 99 RSV. I didn't realize how well they work until I had to go without them. I've tried brazing and welding and now I am ready to just replace it. Does anyone have one laying around that you would be willing to part with or know where I can get one other than the Yamadealer.
  13. Anyone know of a place to get a set of lower windshield mounting brackets for a 96 Royal Star? I have the lower glass, no way to mount. Thanks
  14. Wife has long legs and i need to lower the rear floorboards 2 to 3 inches. Does anyone know of an adaptor kit to accomplish this? Thanks in advance Bob
  15. what would happen, if you put a longer rear shock on, say 12 inches instead of he normal 10?. Will it raise the seat height?. And if you changed the links could you lower it back down?
  16. Well, It finally happened. I was involved in a motorcycle wreck. Only major damage to me is I have no palms and no hide on my left side. The really bad thing is they consider the bike totalled. The question is do I keep the bike with lower payment from the insurance or turn it over and get a new one? I will post pics when I can.
  17. Anyone know where one can order replacement lenses. Small one is for the lower wrap around side bag guard. Larger one is for the lower chrome unit below the turn signal and Yamaha Lens.
  18. I have 3 accessories. 1) Markland Trailer Hitch; 2) Lower Chrome wrap around lights; and 3rd) the Lower Chrome Side bag protector guard. My question is can I mount the Markland Trailer Hitch and the Side Bag Chrome Guard first and the Lower wrap round lights later with out taking off the Markland Trailer Hitch?
  19. What's the function of the lower cowl/scoop/chin-spoiler on the XVZ1300? Is it just for looks, or does it have a real function? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88 Venture
  20. Looking to see if Stebel has a distributor in Canada. A location I had purchased mine from before no longer lists it on their product page. Went to Stebel's home page and the banner says "we are now back in business". http://www.stebel.it/stebel2012/default.asp Considering replacing the stock horn in the left lower fairing. One question ... is there room for a Stebel Nautilus (or Wolo Bad Boy) ? Second question... how loud will it be considering it is inside the lower? Better place to mount it? (off engine guard above and to the right of the toe shifter was a consideration)
  21. Does anyone have the lower fork air deflectors and brackets that they want to unload? Roger:mustache:
  22. Like many, I noticed my water temp gets very close to the redline before the fan kicks in. Once it does, it cools down nicely but I feel more comfortable with the fan coming on at a lower temperature. The thread for the switch is 16m x 1.5. Using that info, I did some searching. I found a good cheap alternative on ebay that switches on the fan significantly earlier than the stock one. The one I got was from a 1988 Chevy Sprint, part number Beck Arnley 201-1367. It is normally open. Opens @ 185 Deg. F; Closes @ 194 Deg. F Fits in with no problem and works like a charm. Fan comes on a lot more but the water temps don't get over half way up the temp gauge. It cost me 5 bucks plus shipping. Just cut off the connector and add a couple of flat, male connectors and they will fit right into the stock harness. 24. I'm on the road in TX for work and need to replace my rear tire on 2001 2nd Gen RSV. Have Avon Venom on both front and rear now. The mechanic I talked to said both Dunlop and Avon are not showing front tires listed for the stock size. Just want to make sure I got my factys straight: Avon Venom Front: AM41 150/80HB-16 Avon Venom Rear: AM42 150/90B-15 Dunlop E3 Front: 150/80-16 Dunlop E3 Rear: MV85B15 Also - the trunk lower locking mechanism mounts all broke on the way out here. These are the mounts that are part of the lower trunk molding. Don't think glue/pvc cement with be strong enough. Anyone else run into this happening? Only thing outside of a new lower trunk I can think of is to fabricate a brace coming from the lower trunk mount bolts. Appreciate any help - MnM
