  1. I just got Commander2 on rear last year-great tire. NOW I need front tire. Michelin does not have a front available in our size. I have had bad luck with Avon VenomX recently. Thusly, that's not an option. I see the Dunlop E3 has the highest load capacity for 120/90-18 like the Avon had. Can anyone say if the E3 gives good turn in, and stability ? I ride back roads dragging the saddlebag trim WFO following my sport bike friends. ALSO any other tire options ?
  2. Removed lower fairings repositioned components installed highway bars and rad chrome Removed and blocked AIS complete Installing VMAx rear end Installed Dyna 3000 ign unit on upper curve Lowered ft end 1" and rear 1/2 inch (I'm inseam challenged) Installed and tuned Supertrapp exhaust Installed 4 single KN filters and installing Ivan's jet kit Custom paint LED headlamp and passing lamps Changed out Cassette deck for a power distribution unit and aux input New Avon rear and smaller Avon front tire
  3. Need new tires. So whats the latest word on the Avon Venoms? Cracking fixed? Stay away? Would be buying the new Michelin Commanders if they made a front that fit, not interested in running a narrower size. Thanks in advance for any input. Ross

    Avon Tire question

This is not a question of whether an Avon is a good tire or how good their customer service is or warranty or how long they last or how they handle. I like the way Avon's handle on my 91 VR. I am on my 6th or 7th SET of Avon Venom's in the last 5 years. And frankly it could be the 8th. I have lost track. I have yet to get more than 5000 miles out of either a front or rear tire before the sidewalls have cracked extensively and usually I get more in the range of 1000 to 3000 miles. All of the tires were mfg'd within 6 to 9 months of mounting. Understand that I maintain the tire pressure per the techs at Avon, bike has been garaged, I do not wash the tires with anything but rain water, I haven't washed my rims in 10 or so years. I use no chemicals or products on the rims or tires. I put the tires on and ride. The bike did sit for a few months after I had a hip and knee replaced but otherwise I try to get out and ride (ie: exercise the tires ...) when ever I can. I have found the Avon reps (and I have been through 2 different companies that rep for Avon here in the states) agreeable and out of all the Avon's I have had, I have only paid for one (1) set and mounting twice. Good for Avon. Whoopie. The bike has a touch over 200,000 miles on it. No problems that would affect it's ride or tire wear or condition. Period. Once again after a short time on this set I am experiencing rather extreme sidewall cracking. So here is my question: Has any one actually heard of or experienced a sidewall blowing out as a result of this type of cracking (not related to age rot) or is this just cosmetic? I am getting tired of putting tires on this thing every 3000 miles.
  5. OK, I've just noticed that my current rear tire says 42# max. Maybe I'm going nuts, but, I seem to remember they used to say 50# max. I've been running it at 47#. What does your Avon rear tire sidewall say? If yours says the same, what do you make of it? Is it no longer safe above 42#? Thanks.
  6. I have some good used tires that I would like to give away to someone who could use them. They are all about 50% or better. Best if you could pick them up as shipping could get expensive especially if crossing the border. 1 Avon front black wall 1 Avon rear white wall 1 Dunlop rear white wall
  7. I just got back from a STAR Touring BBQ in Branson, MO. 2500 miles, 900 of it MO & AR twists and whoop-t-doos. (rode straight home,950 miles yesterday,,, whew. About 18 hours.) So, my stock size Venom is now shot (now at 22k) I called my dealer to get another and was told they can't get it anymore. I looked on Bike Bandit and saw it only on CLOSEOUT for stock size. Guess that narrows the field again on stock size 150/80-16. No Avon, no Michilen Commander II. So I am having them put on a Dunlop E-3 Friday. Mike G in SC
  8. Just got my RSV back from the shop where they did some front end work,i now have a Avon cobra in the front and a Avon Venom on the rear. The dealer said the bike should run ok with that combo, it drove home ok. Has anybody ran a radail in the front and a bais in the rear? They will put on a Venom if i want one.
  9. FYI for those looking. http://newsletter.cyclegiant.com/display.php?M=20189&C=f044635e854e7d92159cecb457d04ee3&S=67&L=1&N=45
  10. I'm on the road in TX for work and need to replace my rear tire on 2001 2nd Gen RSV. Have Avon Venom on both front and rear now. The mechanic I talked to said both Dunlop and Avon are not showing front tires listed for the stock size. Just want to make sure I got my factys straight: Avon Venom Front: AM41 150/80HB-16 Avon Venom Rear: AM42 150/90B-15 Dunlop E3 Front: 150/80-16 Dunlop E3 Rear: MV85B15 Also - the trunk lower locking mechanism mounts all broke on the way out here. These are the mounts that are part of the lower trunk molding. Don't think glue/pvc cement with be strong enough. Anyone else run into this happening? Only thing outside of a new lower trunk I can think of is to fabricate a brace coming from the lower trunk mount bolts. Appreciate any help - MnM
  11. Have a new Avon Venom rear mounted. Was checking the static balance after being machine balanced and before mounting. With the axle through the wheel and resting on jack stands I can see some visible run out on the outer edge of the tire where the tread meets the side wall. Bead appears seated evenly all the way around, there is small amounts of rubber flash that is between the bead and the tire. I din't remove the flash and neither did the tire installer (Avon should have actually) but the flash material is really thin and doesn't equal what I'm seeing for runout. Seems to be in one spot. Is some runout normal on a new tire? On edit: Well according to Avon here http://www.avonmoto.com/download/Tires101.pdf > 1mm lateral, radial run = out of round Thanks RSTDdog

    Avon Venom

Well I was changing the oil and decided to replace the rear tire. Someone mentioned recently that Avon was replacing the Venom. Is that available yet? Thats one question. Another is, where is everyone else finding the best price. I want to get it ordered soon. thanks, Bob
  13. i received an e-mail this morning from Shadetreepowersports in n.ohio about a $40 mail in rebate on avon venom tires, they listy our front tires at $140,99 and the rear at $149.99 i've order many thing from them in the past they always were good to deal with, oh and says the tires are in stock,, steve,,
  14. Ok all, my nephew stayed 4 days with me this week. He is 20 years old and we done some turkey hunting. Then he helped me get my bike up on the layrin bike lift and we changed the front tire. Then my brother came over this morning and we changed the rear. So now this is what I have gotten done on the bike, with a whole lot of help. I am a decent boss on the how to part and I can hand a tool with the best of you, one arm, left shoulder surgery. So I did help as much as possible, until it came to the lifting that required two arms. #1. Flanders bar upgrade from Buckeye Performance, with stainless brake lines and throttle and clutch. #2. Removed all the old fluid and put in new brake fluid and clutch fluid. #3. New Plugs. #4. A.New Avon Venom front. B. New Avon Venom rear, greased rear diff. I already had done the spline and new diff gear oil last year at only 3000 mile earlier. Still going to do; #1. Wash and wax the wheels and mufflers before replacing on bike. #2. Change oil. #3. Check the K&N air filters to make sure they are OK and properly seated in the canister. I read where Freddy had done his and they did not seat properly, so I am going to check mine and make sure they are alright and fix if not. #4. I am going to get everything back together. #5. Wash the whole bike and add some wax. #6. Order a new set of bigger mirrors that I saw somewhere for around $30.00. Put them on. I think that is it...... Oh Ya, hopefully get to ride it in about 2-3 weeks ??? Doctor appt. Wednesday, May 2nd. I may be released to drive, work, and ride sometime in the very near future,I hope. Fuzzy
  15. About 2 weeks ago, I bought a new AM42 Avon 140/90B16 for my 89 Venture (it's not installed yet). This week, my brother brought the 83 around, and now it also needs a new rear tire. I looked, and couldn't find anybody that had the AM42 now--what they have is the AM72, and it costs about $200. Isn't the AM72 a radial tire? The one I have came from Chapporal Motorsports, and when I called them today I was told that the AM42 was discontinued and replaced with the AM72. $200 is too much for the little bit my brother uses the 83 for. I imagine I should just order a Dunlop E3 for it, but I also see the Metzler 880. Has anybody used them? How do they feel and how long do they last? This whole thing kind of upsets me....we find a tire that we like, and then they discontinue it.
  16. Just Ordered mine tonite. www.denniskirk.com Dennis Kirk has a great price on the Avon Venom AM41 Front 150/80H-16 $127.99 Avon Venom AM42 Rear 150/90HB-15 $110.95 Shipping is $5.00 a tire Total $248.94 Hopefully this might be a sign that spring sales are coming on tires. Everyone else was still at the $159.99 - $162.99 FRONT & $151.99 - $160.99 http://www.jakewilson.com/ http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ http://www.compacc.com/
  17. Well it is that time again. The Avon Venoms have 11,414 miles on them. I put them on new myself at 4,130 miles on the bike, bought bike new. I checked the bike after it started feeling kinda squirrely. A strange feeling, almost as if the axle where loose. I checked all the air as usual/tires/shocks/forks, and found no problem. So then I thought well maybe the rear tire is worse than I thought/previously checked it. So after checking it again this evening, tire must be replaced before any further riding. I had to lock it up once about a month ago, tractor trailer pulled out in front of me. So I think this could be the cause of the one bad wore spot/about 4 inches long. There is at least one other spot that is somewhat worn also. My question is this. Should I replace the front also at this mileage (11,414) ? The front tire is with in about 1/16 " of being down to the tread ware mark in the center. I love these Avon tires. I have always run the Dunlop tires on other bikes. This is the first time for me to change out a set of worn Avon Venoms. That is why I am wondering about the front tire. I checked some other threads and saw where some have gotten 14,000 miles out of a rear tire. I understand that, riding habits, where you live/road conditions and curves and hills makes a difference in the ware. As I said I am happy with the mileage. But I did not find anything suggesting the front tire change mileage. Should I replace the front also at this mileage (11,414) ? Where is the best deal on a rear Avon or both front and rear ? Also, what about the white walls ? Any issues with these ? Thanks everyone for your input. Fuzzy
  18. i am ordering an avon venom from jake w. am i tubeless? 83vr
  19. Just bought a new Avon rear tire and had it mounted today. The shop that mounted it told me that the tire needed 2 oz. of weights to make it balanced and that was very unusual and he even suggested I got a bad tire. On a side note, he tried to sell me something called dynobeads?. Anyhow, is it true about a new tire being bad if it needs 2 oz of weights and what is dynobeads?
  20. I know there has been other threads on this but it almost time for me to get new tires and what I am seeing is Avon Venoms or Metzlers or stock .Any other brands that are any good out there...... Ron:cool10:
  21. Just wondering if anybody has received there rebate on the Avon tyres purchased from April 1st 2011 to May15th 2011. I sent all my stuff in and have yet to receive anything back. Bob
  22. Just pulled off a set of Avon Venom off my bike today.....17500 Miles....could have made it for a few more......I have been happy with them but went back on with Dunlop elite 3 for no reason other then going to try something else
  23. Ok so let start this by saying. "Thanks to everyone that has commented on Avon tires that cracked":happy34: I've had Avons since 2005 (except for the emergency replacement). I would like to hear from members that have gotten Avon tires with-in the past year and had good tires. I love my Avons but am a little concerned about the recent cracking problems that a few riders have commented on. I almost ordered some E-3's but then decided to start this thread and wait till Monday to do the ordering.
  24. JakeWilson.com had a price increase on all tires. Today, I ordered Avon Venoms and paid $12 per tire more than when I looked earlier. Saving Grace, Avon has a $25 per tire rebate to 15 May 2011. Attached is the Rebate Form. MIKE aka Uturn
  25. I'm not sure if I put this in the correct category, but whatever. There was a thread a while back that sort of addressed a sidewall cracking issue on Avon Venom tires. My question is, has anyone successfully had a tire replaced by Avon due to a sidewall cracking issue? I've got a set of Avon Venom-x that were put on less than 1,000 miles ago (both front and rear) and I have a ridiculous amount of sidewall cracking on the front tire (right side only). I called the dealer that installed them and they told me to contact Avon directly, which I have done. Just looking for some input and to see if anyone else has had this issue and got it addressed by either their dealer or Avon. Additional information: I live in west Texas and the bike is stored in a garage. To my knowledge no tire dressing has ever been put on them and only soap and water has been used to clean them. (the guy I bought it from had them put on, and the bike had less than 50 miles on them from when they were installed at the dealership). The bike originally lived in southern california. The date code on the tire is 4205 (so it is obviously a few years old). The cracking is pretty consistent all the way around the tire. I run these at 36psi. I am trying to figure out what could have caused this and not a whole lot is making sense as to why it would only be the right sidewall on the front tire when the left side of the front and the rear do not have a single blemish on them. Any input is appreciated, and I'll keep everyone posted on what, if anything, I hear back from Avon. I have attached a few pictures to show ya'll what I'm talking about. Thanks a lot for your time, it is appreciated.
