1. I recently purchased an 08 venture and it seems really high considering the seat height specs. I am not a tall guy at 5'7" and I'm not comfortable with it. Can anyone offer suggestions other than lowering the bike? I've had many people tell me a mustang seat has lowered goldwings as much as 3 inches for seat height?
2. Curious what tricks you guys may have used to get a lower seat height? Road my first gen for the first time ever last week and the biggest issue I have is reaching the ground. I had to take all the air pressure out of the rear shock just to have a chance of reaching the ground with some limited confidence. With time, I'm sure I can get accustomed to it, but I'd feel better if I could flat foot this sucker. For the record, I'm not the tallest guy around. I'm about 5-7 or 5-8 with a 31" in-seam.
3. Ok, so with all the kind help and advice from a number of you great folks, a few days ago I purchased a very sweet 2003 RSV. Yay me! Before it got cold here in Dallas, I had time to get a couple of hundred miles of “get acquainted” time on her, and also about an hour on the practice lot with a few motor-officer friends of mine. I’ve learned a few things, mostly that I LOVE this bike! I have already figured out that she’s a little top heavy, and at slow speeds she is kinda “un-forgiving”. The bike feels heavy in the front end, and almost “wallows” in tight slow speed turns. (I think a lot of that may be the Barons lowering kit she’s got on her). I love my new RSV, and safety and handling (especially at slower speeds) is important to me. So, I wanted to ask a few “new owner” questions, and hope that someone might be willing to offer a little help/experience? 1) I think the Barons lowering kit has to go. I've spoken to my bike mechanic, and he tells me that he can get the OEM Yamaha parts and put her back up to stock height. I've also read about the “Leveling Links” from Diamond R. Do these leveling links install in addition to the OEM parts to bring the RSV back to stock height, or in place of? I’m 6’1”, 225, with a 34” inseam. Would you recommend having the RSV taken back up stock height, or going the “Leveling Links” route? 2) Which helmet communication/intercom headsets do people use and recommend? As far as reliable and good functionally, I mean? When I'm looking/shopping, how do I tell which ones fit the RSV? 3) Does anyone know where I can find one of the Harley brake light frames for the back of my RSV? I am little paranoid about back lights. I was rear-ended at a stop light once, a long time ago. I did NOT enjoy the experience. ;-/ 4) Can anyone recommend a good set of really good “stubby” antenna to replace the stock ones? The stock antennas barely clear the ceiling in my garage. 5) I know I need to be able to adjust/control the air in the shocks. Can anyone recommend a good manual pump for the shocks, hopefully one with a gage built into it? (I'm assuming that it should be manual, rather than an air compressor like I use for my tires) 6) Lastly, I need to go become a supporting member of this great forum, and introduce myself on the “New Member” forum!!! Thanks again for the warm welcome, I’m looking forward to being able to return the friendship and the help!!!!
4. what would happen, if you put a longer rear shock on, say 12 inches instead of he normal 10?. Will it raise the seat height?. And if you changed the links could you lower it back down?
5. Don't have time to wait to buy a jack adapter How and where do I put wood so that I can jack the bike up just need to get front end off the ground but need to get at the clutch line either needs tightened or replaced and I have ti tighten steering change coolant so I just need to straighten her up and get a liitle height on the front end just so the tires an inch offf the ground. Oh my jack width is about 14"
6. I have a '87 venture and want to replace or fix my seat. I feel as if I sit too low. If I put my sheepskin gelpad down I sit pretty good. But if I put my wife's gelpad down on top of it I feel as though I'm sitting at the right height. Just the seat by itself and I feel like I'm way too low. Would a mustang or corbin make a difference with the height? Or should I get my stock seat "re-cushioned"? Appreciate any help. Thanks
7. I'm thinking of buying a backrest for my 2007 RSV. After checking out the posts on backrests I noticed that most them are old posts, and there seems to be a lot of talk about how comfortable a particular backrest is compared to one's height. So, I would like to get some up to date opinions and some more info on the backrest vs my height (5' 8"). Thanks.
8. finally got to take my bike out with the new F4 windshield.....for anyone that's around 6 ft tall and gets head buffeting with a stock height windshield and wants to stop it, this shield , which is 2 inches longer than stock and much wider, ...works..
9. Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. I hope i'm posting this in the proper spot. I am considering the purchase of a '99 RSV that has 18K on the clock. My first concern is the seat height of the RSV. I am 5' 7" and am wondering if I'll be able to handle the bike? Are there any other vertically challenged Venture riders out there that can give me some insight about this ? I have owned many Yamaha snowmobiles and they have all served me well. Figured it was time to try their 2 wheelers. Thanks, Jay
10. Does anyone know of a document that gives a minimum vehicle ground clearance that the manufacturers must meet. There are some local speed bumps that a lot of people (including me) drag bottom on, they claim that the speed bumps are less than the minimum legal vehicle height, I would like to find out what that dimension is. Preferably a document to reference.
11. Lookin to replace my short clearview. Has anyone purchased a shield from ceebailey's? I'm lookin to get back to the original height and width.
12. I bought my 08 with a lowering kit in the rear, front is still stock height. Thanks to a member (Big Tom) I now have the stock dog bones to put it back to stock. I can flat foot it with the kit in it know but I was thinking the ride may be better 2 up if I go back but I'm not sure of the footing. I plan on doing a butler seat mod as well and maybe lower the front? so that may help also going back to stock height. I'm wondering what kind of project it would be? Any thoughts or tips would be great, Thanks
13. I'm looking at putting wider/lower beachbar handlebars on my 96 Royal Star to give it a more retro look. Does anyone know the max width & height that I can change to without replacing clutch/brake lines & cables? Is it even possible to do on the old Edsel?
14. Ive read the current threads on the subject but i am lost. I am 5' 10.5" tall. I cut my factory shield down to 17" above the bottom of the gas cap area. At that height i was looking above the shield which is what i want. However the buffeting was terrible. So I contacted ClearView and they were great about pre-sales support. I ordered the shortest version which is 19" above the same point. We thought that since their shield leans back Id still see over it. However it didnt work out that way. The bigger problem was the buffeting wasn't reduced enough for me. The recurve helped but not enough. Let me say, the ClearView folks are top notch. Although we couldn't get to a solution, they took great care of me. SO, here I am asking for advice. I want to look over the shield and I want as little buffeting as possible. If this sounds familiar and you've found a solution PLEASE share! and thx......
15. Well, I turned 10,000 miles today on the Blue/Black RSTD I picked up new on April 3rd of this year. I would have to say I'm very happy with it. Its about the same weight as my ex-BMW K1100. I like the seat height, and would call it perfect for me, as is the sitting position. I was able to pick up a glove I dropped while at a stop light today without dismounting, that wasn't something I could have done with the seat height on the BMW. Gas mileage could be a little better, but its not terrible. I like being able to remove the windshield easily for short rides in good weather. The saddle bags are spacious and its easy to strap a big bag on the rear seat or luggage rack if I need to carry more stuff. This is the first bike I've owned with floor boards, I like them. I've got some farkles ready to go on this winter when I feel like a project: chrome bag guards, driving lights, and a small LED bar for the top of the license plate. And I'm back to doing my own maintenance, like I used to do to my Hondas and Triumphs in the 60's and 70's. This site gets a lot of the credit for that. Its been a good year for riding, and I've made a number of new friends thanks to this forum. So let me be the first to wish everyone a happy and healthy and safe Holiday Season. RandyR
16. Hi to all I hesitated to post this but thought it might be of interest to some RSTD owners. I have posted about the whine and the help I got from using Motorkote in the engine and the post on this topic has many interesting comments. Now to my latest adventure..... Several weeks ago I was riding to work early am and the windshield completly fogged and misted over. I could not see anything in front of the bike. Yikes! I started doing some internet and forum searches and found that having a windshield as tall as the RSTD is can be dangerous in these conditions. I KNOW THIS IS A PERSONAL PREFERENCE AND I AM JUST POSTING MY OPINION! Everyone has to make their own minds up. How and when you ride will effect your preferences. I purchased a windshield off ebay for $24.50 that was supposedly damaged and was pleasantly surprised that it only had very minor scratches on it. This gave me a cheap backup to have in case I did not like the modification to the height of the existing stock shield. I determined for me that cutting off 4" gave me what I was looking for. It turns out that height was perfect and I am happy with the modification I did. (there are posts on how to do this and was very easy to do) When I took it for a long ride I immediately noticed that I had to really concentrate to hear the whine. It appears that the changes in the aerodynamics of the shield also acted as a buffer against the noise. Don't get me wrong the whine is still there but is now more of a normal engine mechanical sound that just seems to get swallowed up in the other ambient noises of air, engine and the pipes. I am amazed that there could be this much change from just lowering the shield. I can now see over the shield and don't experience much difference in the ride on the highway as far as buffeting is concerned. It is not the coccoon that it was but I feel as if I am still getting the benefits of the shield. This combined with the Motorkote has changed the annoyance of this terrific machine into something that I know is there but will be able to accept and deal with. Again, I am not trying to force my opinions on any of you and there is no garantee that any will experience the changes I got from this modification. I do believe that seeing over the shield offers a level of safety in certain conditions (which my New England climate gives me in both the early fall and spring each year) that can not be achieved with the stock height windshield. The bonus of the noise changing was completely unexpected! Just some ideas to throw in the cat box, it will either just lie there, get covered up or watch out the litter will fly! Have a great fall and be safe Dan
17. I was about to put this old ironing board in the trash when the light came on ! Works perfect for an adjustable height work table. easy to move around and store. Oh ya I did replace the one in the house.... Keith
18. I just picked up a sweeeet 05 rs midnight venture but the man before me lowered the rear with a kit that relocated the caliper and dropped the bike almost 2 inches can I remove these parts and return the bike to stock height without purchasing more parts or is it just removing the added parts and reattaching the stock parts?? Also not sure if he lowered the front I have read on here that u can adjust the front down without parts how can I tell if this was done or how do I return it to stock height? I am 6'6" 34 inseam and need it brought up thanks for any help guys.....ride on
19. Last minute preparations to go for a ride. Homemade table I made last year is great for prepping - oil changes - cleaning - etc. Goes to total of 39'' and is about half height in pictures. Works on hydrolic-ram after the original design of floor jack didn't work out. Works great with multiple height adjustments and can do it with a touch of a button instead of jacking up and down with the jack.Have used it to work on a few other bikes and is great also for lawn tractors and snow blowers.
20. Does anyone ride with a shorter wider windshield? I am considering the purchase of a wider and shorter tinted shield but i'm not sure I will like riding on long trips with it. Also I am not sure of the way it looks. If anyone here rides with one can you please post a pic, and tell me what height it is possibly? Maybe some pro's and cons of it too? Thanks in advance, Big Mike
21. Is it possible to adjust the seat height? I installed a new windshield this weekend, 5 inches shorter than the stock height and when I had it seated all the way down I couldn't see completely over it, or look completely through it, it was at that weird height where I was looking through it and over it and the same time ....so I raised it up as far as I could get it, and now I am looking through the top inch and a half of it, which is better, but not ideal. Since I have no wiggle room on the windshield I was wondering if the seat height is adjustable up or down??
22. Hi everybody, I need some of your knowledge and opinions folks. I have a stock 07 RSV. I'm 5'7" and I'm on my tips of my toes when I stop. I spoke with the yamaha dealer and they said there is a lower kit, but it only lowers it 1 inch. I've read the past thread about seat height, but is there a lower kit that will drop the bike 2 inchs? Basically, I need at two inches...any thoughts, ideas. I really love my bike and was planning keeping it until it died, but if I can't resolve the height of the bike issue, I'm not going to be able to keep it...it's just too tall for me. Larry
23. I have a 2005 RSV with a show chrome windshiel. The windshield sees a little short. Does anyone know what the height and width of the factory windshield is? Also does the show chrome create more turbulance? You would think Yamaha would put on the one that resulted in a more aerodynamic ride. Just wondering!! Also anyone going to the Texas Star-B-Q? Thanks
24. My wife has nearly quit riding with me complaining of too much wind buffeting. She says that after an hour behind me with our OEM windshield she gets headaches. I'm only 5' 10" and she's 5' 6", so on the pillion her head is slightly above mine. What windshield do y'all recommend including height and width.
25. I've been using 1 1/2" risers for a year now. I like the setup better than stock, but it still isn't quite what I want. I've thought about the G2's, but they are the same height as stock and I think I like the height the risers give me (I'm 6' 2"). I thought about putting the G2s on the risers. 1 1/2" more height and 2" more pull back. I would prefer to get rid of the risers, but that setup might give me what I want. Then I looked at the RSTD stock bars. 2" more in Height and 2 1/2" more pull back... and no risers. They are 2" wider also. Do they use the same bar weights? Here are the specs: Height Width Pull Back Center RSV 6" 31" 14" 7.5" G2 6" 31.5" 16" 6" RSTD 8" 33" 16.5" 8" I'm thinking I would need to go 4" over on throttle cables, upper front brake hose and upper clutch hose. If I decided I didn't like it, would the extra hose/cable length be a problem if I left them on but went back to G2 or stock+risers? Anyone got a set of RSTD stock bars for cheap? I would like to throw a set on just to see how they look and feel on the bike before I lay out the money for cables and hoses. Any thoughts?
