  1. Anyone know about this vehicle? Kinda looks like it began as a golf car.......... armored for the rigors of the golf course. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
  2. Motorcycles make more sense that autos and trucks. My wife's main vehicle has always been a big Jaguar XJ8 (I'll admit that I love it too!). But now that we are moving to a small mountain town in New Mexico, I just do not trust ever finding a qualified Jaguar mechanic there. I do just about all my own work on the Jag, just like the bikes, but there are some complicated things on that vehicle that I have no experience with, so I would really want a shop I could trust. We agreed to sell the Jag here in the Fort Worth area and buy a sensible Japanese compact all-wheel-drive for the mountains. So far, so good, but that is where it started getting weird for me. The Jaguar XJ8 is a big 4-door luxury sedan with a 300HP V8 engine - it has enough power that it is sometimes hard to drive it in a sedate way! And this big car gets 32 MPG on the highway! I have absolutely no problems making the entire 600 mile trip from here to Ruidoso on one 19 gallon tank, even when driving a steady 80 miles an hour most of the way. Now the Honda CR-V I just bought today is only rated for highway mileage of 26 MPG, and most of us have learned to never expect to even reach the posted EPA numbers. So what the heck is wrong with the world when a big luxury car with a great V8 engine gets so much better fuel economy than a standard Japanese vehicle with a small to mid size 4 cylinder? That little CR-V seems like a great little vehicle, but I'm betting I'll curse the mediocre fuel economy for years to come. Goose Anybody wanna buy a big beautiful Jag with GREAT fuel mileage?
  3. Federal law enforcement spokesman used the term "The suspect was armed with a vehicle" to justify a shooting and killing of a woman in California. The use of the term "armed" is what caught my eye. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/09/30/14161155-family-demands-answers-in-fatal-shooting-of-woman-in-car-by-border-patrol-agent?lite=obinsite
  4. In Memphis, Tenn., New Orleans, La., and Alabama, it's against the law for a woman to drive a car unless there is a man either running or walking in front of it waving a red flag to warn approaching motorists and pedestrians. (This is not a bad idea in some cases..) Although women in Saudi Arabia got the right to vote in 2009, they still aren't allowed to drive a car. (I'll repeat the above... This is not a bad idea in some cases..) In San Francisco, Calif., it is illegal to wipe one's car with used underwear. (now that's downright sh*tty...) To limit road kill in Pennsylvania, driving along a country road at night requires drivers to stop every mile, send up a rocket signal and wait 10 minutes for the road to be cleared of livestock, before continuing along the route. (I heard livvin in Pennsylvania was a very "slow pace") In Sarasota, Fla., drivers are discouraged not to hit pedestrians (or you'll be fined $78). (heck, there's a few times I wouldn't mind payin...) In California, it's against the law to shoot at wild game from a moving vehicle, unless the target is a whale. (seriously...??? LOL) In Wichita, Kansas, drivers are required to get out of their vehicle and fire three shot gun rounds into the air before proceeding through the intersection of Douglas and Broadway. (just make sure you don't hit any wild game....unless it's an whale... oh, that's in California ... never mind!) In Montreal, you may not park a car in such a way that it blocks your own driveway. (.... and prevent your spouses lover from escaping...) While some get a thrill from making out in cars, Massachusetts' law prohibits taxi drivers from having sexy time in the front row if they happen to be working (dumbass driver forgot to book off shift....) It's illegal to molest a car in Clinton, Okla. (now ya gotta be some serious weirdo to get arrested for that!) In California, no vehicle without a driver may exceed 96 km/h an hour. (... or it will be sentenced to public molestation.) If you have been convicted of driving while intoxicated in New Jersey, you'll no longer be eligible to apply for personalized license plates. (now here's a law that should be everywhere ... it would immediately put an end to DUI's ... or personalized lic plates...) Women can't wear a housecoat while behind the wheel in California. (fine... dump the houscoat ) In South Carolina it is illegal to display a replica of testicles on a vehicle. (real ones are ok though...)
  5. Someone drove by and inquired if I was interested in selling my 76 Chev Luv (156K miles). It is in really bad shape. Has a cracked head and has been parked for 15 years. I'll attach some pictures. The only thing I know about parts vehicle is that I'm looking for a 90 to 93 1st gen for parts for about $500.00. If readers could give me their opinion I'd appreciate it.
  6. My daughter and her husband is looking at them for the mileage claim is pretty darn good for a sport utility. Like to know the pros and cons of this vehicle.
  7. Last September 6th I traded my 2009 Silverado Z71 in on a 2011 Silverado Z71 and financed a portion of the purchase price. I paid $17 doc fees and $25 Title fees. I never asked questions about it , didn't have cause to. In the middle of November I paid off the mortgage on the truck and waited for the title to arrive. The last week of November I got an 8 1/2" X 11" sheet of paper saying that I could take it to my local title department and get a title. I did and it cost $16 for what I thought I had already paid for. After a call to the dealership and talking to the business whatever she was called I found that when you finance a vehicle that there is never a title issued. Everything is "electronic" and I guess it save's the .32 cents to mail a title to you and evidently nobody ever has a clear title to their vehicle. I'm still trying to figure how I can make life miserable enough for the dealer so that they will refund my $16 that I thought I had already paid for a paper title. I'm relatively sure I won't win but it'll be fun jabbing them as often as I feel like it.
  8. Warning: Scam Against Older Men Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven't heard about it. This is a 'heads up' for those men who may be regular customers at Lowe's, Home Depot, Costco, or even Wal-Mart. This one caught me totally by surprise. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your older friends. Here's how the scam works: Two nice-looking, college-aged girls will come over to your car or truck as you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. (It's impossible not to look). When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say 'No' but instead ask for a ride to McDonald's. You agree and they climb into the vehicle. On the way, one starts undressing and then starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet. I had my wallet stolen Sept. 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th, & 29th. Also Oct. 1st & 4th, twice on the 8th, 16th, 23rd, 26th & 27th, and very likely again this upcoming weekend. So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of us older men. Warn your friends to be vigilant. Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found even cheaper ones for $.99 at the dollar store and bought them out in three of their stores. Also, you never get to eat at McDonald's. I've already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth from Lowe's, to Home Depot, to Costco, Etc. So please, send this on to all the older men that you know and warn them to be on the lookout for this scam. (The best times are just before lunch and around 4:30 in the afternoon.)
  9. Looking at 1994 Mustang convertible on ebay with 11,000 miles http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/320768912686 Says clutch replaced? why if only 11,000 miles (maybe used at the dragstrip I think). So see ebay includes 'Free Vehicle History Report' Click on that and it shows the vehicle's title was transferred in 1999 with 39,000 miles on it. yet ebay's own safety check report says no discrepencies found ???????
  10. How much does a salvage title hurt a vehicle?? I've been looking for a older truck for a 2nd vehicle. Friend offered 08 Ranger w/44k for $6500. Didn't really want one that new but... This thing was rolled and rebuilt. It looks like a new truck. Super sharp!! Awlsome job on it. About what would it be worth and what does the salvage title hurt later?
  11. So I'm at a red light and I see in my rearviews this little red Suzuki car barrelling up behind me. It was apparent to me this gal was NOT paying attention to her driving as she was jacking her jaws on her cellphone. I hit the throttle and got out of her way just in time to avoid being seriously rear-ended.....And of course she blew the red light big time! She got t-boned so bad her vehicle was pushed across 2 lanes of opposing traffic and right onto the sidewalk. I parked the scoot in a safe location and helped her get out of her vehicle and sit down. No serious injuries except for a nice laceration on the side of her head from smacking her door frame. She was more concerned about the location of her cell phone than anything else! I don't even want to think about how bad it would have been if she had rear-ended me at the speed she was going! Gave the LEO my statement and I'm purty sure I'll be called to Court for the lawsuit she's gonna get slapped with by the driver who nailed her. Keep yer head onna swivel and check those rearviews often my friends! Boomer....who sez unleashing a group of pygmies in the Courthouse could prove to be pretty darn comical....
  12. The Free Press, Mankato, MN May 11, 2011 (Name removed) was killed in three-wheeler crash in New Prague NEW PRAGUE — A North Mankato woman was killed Tuesday when she was thrown from a three-wheeled motorcycle on a roundabout near New Prague. (name removed), 62, was a passenger on the vehicle being driven by her husband. The State Patrol said the vehicle, a Harley-Davidson trike, hit a raised-curb median with its left rear and front wheels. The crash occurred at 12:38 p.m. Bonita Domeier was thrown from the vehicle and struck a street sign. John Domeier was found pinned beneath the trike in the center of the roundabout. He suffered non-critical injuries, the patrol said.
  13. Popped off the ol calipers today doing my routine checks (I also changed the spark plugs, shielded my audio wiring and did a few other minor things) and realized it was about time to change the pads. Once I got down to about half worn I started checking them every week or two and I am absolutely amazed how quickly these things wear when they get close to the end... This is only about 17k miles but since my bike is used as my primary vehicle it does get its fair share of stop and go. I did realize that some of these didn't focus all that well - oops. Next time, I will just change them out when they start to get thin!! This was a bit too close for comfort for me.
  14. This is what they classify as Stunt Driving - lifting any tire from the surface of the road (wheelies or stoppies) - intentionally causing any tire to lose traction while turning (skids or drifting) - having the intention of causing a vehicle to spin (not sure how they're going to measure intentions...) - driving a vehicle in oncoming lanes next to another vehicle longer than is "resonably" required to pass - driving with someone in the trunk (not sure what this has to do with racing or stunting) - driving while not sitting in the driver's seat - driving more than 50kph (approx. 30mph) over the speed limit - driving in a way that prevents others from passing - slowing down with the intention of slowing or interfering with another vehicle - driving with the inention of driving as close as possible to a vehicle, pedestrian or fixed object (i'm not sure what this one is about) - jumping a left turn at a green light before allowing straight-through traffic to proceed So what used to be considered "aggressive driving" falls under "stunt driving" now. Some of these are easily seen on the roads - people making left turns on green before straight-through traffic, slowing on purpose to block others..
  15. Are you prepared to know the warning signs? Do not ignore this. Google it, research it, know the early signs of use of these "legal" drugs and their affects. I live in a town of 600 people and we are seeing the affects and causes. Do not think your child would never do it. I just worked an accident scene that K2 was the direct link to this vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the 4 lane highway, out of control, and eventually trashing their vehicle after a few near misses of head on traffic. It is not detectable by conventional drug test, therefore rendering these kids with the lie of I dont know what happened. Parents are spending thousand of dollars on test because the kids will not admit to the use of these harmfull drugs. Be prepared and not blind to the fact that YES even your child MAY try this.
  16. This is something I don't think we think a lot about, having debris thrown into us off the road from another vehicle. This is one of those random tragic events of life. RandyA http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/12/20/alabama-mother-killed-pothole/?test=latestnews
  17. Please send this information to ALL your family & friends, especially those who have kids in the car with them while pumping gas. If this were to happen, they may not be able to get the children out in time. MUST READ, EVEN IF YOU DON'T OWN A CAR. Shell Oil Comments - A MUST READ! Safety Alert! Here are some reasons why we don't allow cell phones in operating areas, propylene oxide handling and storage area, propane, gas and diesel refueling areas. The Shell Oil Company recently issued a warning after three incidents in which mobile phones (cell phones) ignited fumes during fueling operations In the first case, the phone was placed on the car's trunk lid during fueling; it rang and the ensuing fire destroyed the car and the gasoline pump. In the second, an individual suffered severe burns to their face when fumes ignited as they answered a call while refueling their car! And in the third, an individual suffered burns to the thigh and groin as fumes ignited when the phone, which was in their pocket, rang while they were fueling their car. You should know that: Mobile Phones can ignite fuel or fumes Mobile phones that light up when switched on or when they ring release enough energy to provide a spark for ignition Mobile phones should not be used in filling stations, or when fueling lawn mowers, boat, etc. Mobile phones should not be used, or should be turned off, around other materials that generate flammable or explosive fumes or dust, (I.e., solvents, chemicals, gases, grain dust, etc...) TO sum it up, here are the Four Rules for Safe Refueling: 1) Turn off engine 2) Don't smoke 3) Don't use your cell phone - leave it inside the vehicle or turn it off 4) Don't re-enter your vehicle during fueling. Bob Renkes of Petroleum Equipment Institute is working on a campaign to try and make people aware of fires as a result of 'static electricity' at gas pumps. His company has researched 150 cases of these fires. His results were very surprising: 1) Out of 150 cases, almost all of them were women. 2) Almost all cases involved the person getting back in their vehicle while the nozzle was still pumping gas. When finished, they went back to pull the nozzle out and the fire started, as a result of static. 3) Most had on rubber-soled shoes. 4) Most men never get back in their vehicle until completely finished. This is why they are seldom involved in these types of fires. 5) Don't ever use cell phones when pumping gas 6) It is the vapors that come out of the gas that cause the fire, when connected with static charges. 7) There were 29 fires where the vehicle was re-entered and the nozzle was touched during refueling from a variety of makes and models. Some resulted in extensive damage to the vehicle, to the station, and to the customer. 8) Seventeen fires occurred before, during or immediately after the gas cap was removed and before fueling began. Mr. Renkes stresses to NEVER get back into your vehicle while filling it with gas. If you absolutely HAVE to get in your vehicle while the gas is pumping, make sure you get out, close the door TOUCHING THE METAL, before you ever pull the nozzle out. This way the static from your body will be discharged before you ever remove the nozzle. As I mentioned earlier, The Petroleum Equipment Institute, along with several other companies now, are really trying to make the public aware of this danger. I ask you to please send this information to ALL your family and friends, especially those who have kids in the car with them while pumping gas. If this were to happen to them, they may not be able to get the children out in time.
  18. We are heading out next Friday for Port Canaveral, Florida for a Disney Curise:cool10: We will be driving and leaving our vehicle in the cruise terminal parking. My question is to those of you that conceal carry. What do you do with your weapon in a situation like this. Can't take it on the ship, but I'm a little concerned about locking it in the vehicle for 6 days. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,
  19. Has anyone tried this, and what makes it different from regular gasoline? According to what I am reading it doesnt get stale and its legal to store in your vehicle, so what makes it different? Other than the highly inflated price? http://sparefuel.net/ Brian
  20. Does anyone know of a document that gives a minimum vehicle ground clearance that the manufacturers must meet. There are some local speed bumps that a lot of people (including me) drag bottom on, they claim that the speed bumps are less than the minimum legal vehicle height, I would like to find out what that dimension is. Preferably a document to reference.
  21. I didn't win the lottery again tonight. But I was shopping for my new vehicle just in case. IF you won the lottery tomorrow What vehicle would you buy for everyday use. I was looking at a F450 King Ranch for 67k. http://images.loqu.com/contents/162/626/image/2009-05-15/3.jpg Didn't wanna go quite this far with a F650. Be kinda hard to park all the time. http://www.f650pickups.com/mmb.jpg
  22. I am looking to purchase a used vehicle and have been looking for a pick up or SUV. I prefer larger vehicles due to my size but I'm getting frustrated due to the costs. I'd like something one to two years old. I haven't purchased a new vehicle since 1985. I've never been a fan of Subarus but I would like 4X4 or AWD like the Subaru. Does the Subaru make a vehicle big enough for tall/big people or are all of them likely to be too small? I've never been in one so I really know nothing about them.
  23. Well. I will reserve the details for now as I don't feel like typing it all out but the important parts are the passenger was sleeping and covered with a blanket upon impact so other than some minor blistering from the glass spray that occurred, we are both fine. Cannot get a windshield installed until Monday, at the earliest. Thanks to the local PD and FD for being very VERY helpful in all of this. I guess a little professional courtesy goes a long way... I'll update more info later, but I need to go eat and relax a little. As of right now I will be staying at a local hotel and am in the process of trying to setup a rental car until I can get a replacement windshield, etc. (Unfortunately since I am under 25 I will get nailed with the stupid underage fee too, but oh well). -- More to come. Rick M. EDIT: Here is a summary of what happend I was the driver of the 2005 Ford Escape at the time of the incident. S. bound I-69 Exit 26 (near freightliner dealership, just past off ramp but on overpass - etc. etc.) (~ 1500 hrs) After traffic cleared, I moved into left lane to overtake Dollar General Selmi-truck & trailer (unknown trailer plate number, tractor number, trailer number etc). Second vehicle moved in behind me, as I was passing the rear axels of the trailer I saw a chunk of, what I believe was ice, lift off of the top of the trailer (near the front most point of the trailer) appering to be the width of the trailer and at least roughly twice as long as it was wide (~8 ft x 16 ft) and tumble next to the trailer and collide with windshield of the 2005 Ford Escape that I was driving. When I observed the ice start to lift off of the truck I immediately moved as far left as I could safely do so and still maintain control of the vehicle and remain on the roadway. I was unable to reduce my speed due to the proximity of the vehicle behind me (make, model, driver, occupants unknown, and condition of that vehicle unknown). After the impact of the ice with the Escape and wen safe to do so, I proceeded to move into the right lane and on to the shoulder. After clearing the bridge I parked on the shoulder and proceeded to inspect the condition of the passenger. Anderson Fire department arrived on scene (~1510 hrs; within 10 minutes of parking on shoulder) in ambulance and continued examination of passenger. Anderson Police on scene within 5-10 minutes of Ambulance arrival. Officer took report. By ~1545 Escape was cleaned up enough and I proceeded to drive to Anderson Fire Department escorted by Ambulance, followed by APD vehicle and Fire Engine. Vehicle secured in Fire Station. Cleaned by myself and AFD while passenger proceeded to call insurance company and file claim. AFD assisted in attempting to schedule glass replacement same day. Were not able to secure a windshield replacement until Monday 11-Jan-2010. Etc.
  24. I had a little mishap in the driveway this week. Long story short, the bike rolled on my sloped driveway after I thought it was safe on the side stand and fell against another vehicle. Another LHS Venture rear view mirror bites the dust! Fortunately, no other damage to me, the bike or the other vehicle but I am now down a mirror. I am thinking that instead of looking for yet another OEM replacement, its time to adapt some standard lollipop m/c mirrors to my Venture. I understand some have done this successfully by drilling out the cast mirror base to accept the stalk ends of standard m/c mirrors. Thanks to this weeks adventures, I have one LHS mirror base but no RHS unless I deliberately sacrifice a good mirror. Actually I'd be interested in lefts and rights in case things don't go well. I'd like to wind up with a pair. So, I am wondering if anyone has any orphaned cast mirror bases that they could spare? Thanks, Brian H.
  25. We all run over something once in awhile, but usually will stop when it's safe and check the vehicle out.....especially if it starts to run a little different. A woman ran over a mattress but was in too much of a hurry to stop. The mattress got caught underneath and started what she described as a "slight driveline shimmy at high speeds". She still didn't stop until it caused a hole in the fuel tank. THAT is what caused the vehicle to stop. The tow truck driver looked underneath and this is what they saw when they got it on the lift at the shop...........I wonder what a BIG shimmy would feel like?
