  1. Carl is right - I did smile a bunch on our ride home! Also, I can now report to both of you that I have installed Earle's brake pads that Io got from him at MD and to my pleasant surprise, my front braking has gone from very poor to very good. So now, I smile even more when I stop and frown a bit when I go because I didn't buy a second set of pads for my other front caliper.
  2. Been meaning to pass on this info especially for those who have original foam grips that are showing wear. About ten years ago, I purchased some foam sleeves that went over my original grips. While I liked their comfort and feel, the quality of the foam was was not nearly as good as the original grips. However, the original grips on my 88VR were wearing badly so I decided to look for some new foam grip covers. I finally found a manufacturer that makes them - called "Grab On Quality Foam Grips" in WA. To my pleasant surprise, they make a size that is a perfect fit the 5in long x 1 1/2 in diameter original foam VR grips. They stay in place without need for any glue and are extremely comfortable and durable (so far). The manufactures says they are made from extra durable EPDM foam and claims to guarantee satisfaction. They are also an inexpensive fix at a price of about $10.
  3. While changing my back tire at MD, I took the time to grease my drive shaft spline. Good thing as it was dry. Now when I stop, it seams like my 88VR slips into neutral from 1st gear more easily than it did before. Before I greased the spline, it seemed to be more "sticky" when shifting into neutral. So, is this just my imagination or could a dry spline cause "sticky" shifting into neutral.
  4. Hey Wayne - I may hold off my ride north for a day in order to join you Thursday morning, probably at Mono Mills, for part of your day ride. If so, I would leave you probably somewhere near Bracebridge/Huntsville in order to head further north to our cottage on Lake Nipissing. Will let you know as soon as possible. Currently planning on riding further north to the Biker's Reunion at New Liskeard on Friday.

  6. Some lessons here, but good to hear in the end that Gunboat made it home. Also, sorry to hear you have to replace your new back tire Goose, but glad to hear you made it home safely. I also want to thank you so much for helping me with my rear tire change at MD. Very much appreciated!
  7. Yes, the bike feels better on the road with the new tire and I sure appreciated all the help. You guys are amazing! It took more time than I expected but I feel a whole lot better now that it is done.
  8. Glad you made it home this year without getting up close and personal with the deer. Also, thanks again for leading us through some most beautiful WNY country on the ride down.
  9. --- Great Pics Al - thanks for posting them.
  10. Charlie - It was good meeting you and glad you made it back without worse weather. I look foreword to riding with you soon in your area and I will be in touch.
  11. Dan - Amazing story - so glad it has a happy ending. I know the feeling as I had a similar experience a few years back and many years ago, I lost a rear tire on a VW when the axle nut came off on the highway. Both experiences scared the bej----- out of me!
  12. Don's Post: I want you all to know that what I feel about all of you and what this organization is NOT any pride that I have accomplished something beyond my biggest dream. I feel no arrogance, no conceit, no feeling that I am anybody special. What I feel is truly honored that you have made me a part of your lives. I am honored that so many of you have chosen to be a part of this group and very humbled that you all take the time to participate whether it be by attending this event or any of our others, by your participation here, however you choose to be a part of VentureRiders. I don't feel that I am doing anything special for YOU.....I feel that YOU are doing something special for ME by being a part of something much larger than myself. I wish I could better express in words how I feel about all of you but just know that you are a special and very important part of my life and I thank you for that. Don - Allow me to echo Bob's words and add that you are a very special and amazing guy. Like others, I feel fortunate to have met you through being part of this organization that I now cherish.
  13. Others have said it so well. The club and the forum and MD are all just plain special and I want to add my own personal thanks to Don and Eileen for all the obvious work to make MD so uniquely special. It is great to get to continue to meet members, especially at an event such as this. Also want to say that all the help from so many for my tire change job was enormously appreciated. Here are a few more pictures of this great event, starting with our rendezvous at bongobob's.

    Consensus

Cool idea --- and the outcomes could be interesting.
  15. I have attached a picture of another option that I came up with for my 1st gen. I replaced the top bolt holding the aluminum side cover with a longer bolt to mount the lights and with my running lights, I also inserted a half inch spacer for better clearance from the rad shroud. Works pretty good for me except I have to remove the lights to remove my lower fairing. also, one of the members noted in a post that these aluminum side cover bolts are screwed into light aluminum, although I have never had a problem with them.
  16. --- and I think the rate available to us there is just over $60.
  17. I have investigated a bit here in Ontario. Thought I had a reasonably good deal from Motorcycle Impacts for an E3 Dunlop at $135 delivered locally but in the end, all he could supply was a tire made in 2005, so I passed on that deal. The other place that seemed to offer better pricing was Sonic Cycle Salvage in London and I think their installation price was very competitive. I suspect others will have helpful information.
  18. I was all over the map but averaging about 36 mpg (US) before I recently replaced diaphragms and did the Skydoc shim mod. Since then, I have averaged over 42 mpg on my last three tanks riding mostly at 70mph +.
  19. If there is room for at least one more - from Ontario - I would love to join you folks?
  20. Interesting. My 88 is one of the smoothest shifting bikes I have owned over the past 45 years. However, it also is touchy to find neutral. In may case, I put it in 1st and let out the clutch just enough to inch foreword and then try to shift into neutral. It usually just slips into neutral with a light touch on the shifter.
  21. I'm looking for saddlebag lid rails for my 88VR. Ebay currently has a single right side rail only. Does anybody know where I might find a set?
  22. Would you recommend the same for a 1st gen?
  23. I would like to find a set of saddlebag lid rails for my 88VR.
  24. John, unlike the good advice you can get from others on this forum, I sure can't help you much but I thought I would share my own experience with my 88VR. It can handle all but the worst rain without any problem. However, if I even look at it with a power washer, it misses badly. In my case, it straightens out as it dries out.
  25. With Mother's help, I did this mod (or something like it) to my 88VR. Amazingly simple. Just removed the cassette player and plugged into the original line to the player. It is set up so I can now switch from operating my radio through the original system to operating a mp3 player through the original system, with the intercom and CB player still functioning in either case. Mother said he got the idea from this forum. I am sure others can provide more info on this.
