Kevin, I'm sure many of us think that we are at risk of going down like that. It's so good to hear about going down like you did - without injury. Hopefully, you will be back in a saddle again soon. Good luck with fixing or replacing.

Being a snowmobiler in the winter, I mostly agree with you Steve. While I do ride year round here in Toronto, I do try to avoid recently salted roads (a problem in this part of the country) as it is hard on the bike and I also try to avoid days where the roads could be icy, especially if the temp dropped a few degrees before I made it home.

I know many will chuckle at me when I mention this but I will anyway to you Charlie. I once owned a few bikes including one that rode and felt good at 100+ mph. I got to like riding at that speed which I did on my almost daily 50 mile run to my horses. In fact, I eventually figured that I liked it a way too much for my wallet and health, so I finally decided that I really needed to go back to riding one of my other bikes which had a sweet spot closer to 70mph, something like my current VR. I doubt I would have survived the other bike cause my own riding skills are just not good enough for that.

Yea - and what pi---s me off is that as I get older and my reflexes aren't as quick, I try to leave some additional space between me and the vehicles ahead of me, but that just makes it worse as more and more, drivers are switching lanes and cutting in front of me into my "safety space". I'm told we have the busiest freeway in North America here in Toronto and I have to ride it almost every day to get into and out of the city.

[QUOTE=Condor;531482]On the bike I just leave the power cord plugged in and stow the GPS. In the truck, and Suburban, I don't even bother unplugging them...just turn them off.... and sometimes I forget to do that too... I hear ya on the hard wire. When I get around to saving up enough $, I think I'm going to try the Bluetooth route.... For me, I will put up with the wires to have the MP3 feature which works so well on my 1st gen. The major Garmin dealer told me that non of the newer units have the MP3 feature and I assume he knew what he was talking about. Because its not worth much now, I mostly just put a bag over it when I park my bike in a public place.

Unlike you Charlie, I try to limit my riding to anything above freezing weather. Last year I indulged and bought some better snowmobile gloves from Mark's Work Wearhouse. What a difference! Never had cold hands yet with these particular gloves.

That's what I have and I love it for its functions and performance, including the MP3 player. Mother provided me with a sort of "plug and play" switch that allows me to integrate all the GPS's functions, including MP3 player and bluetooth, through the VR sound system, This works great and I think there are a number of threads about this. However, I am a bit jealous when I see how easily others like Marcarl and Wizard765 can mount and remove their new GPS units while I have to unplug the power and headset wires to remove my unit.

Want to add my congratulations Carl and while I can't match your numbers, I can say that my grandkids (now 4 of them) have added major joy to my life.

VR Trunk Mirror Bolts

I also lost a nut when removing my mirror and did the same as mbrood, which I found quite easy to do. -
Good question - I have had a few close calls over my 47 years of riding, including deer, but no direct hits (also had a few very mean looking dogs chase me). My closest encounter was actually on my snowmobile when I came around a sharp corner on a bush trail and almost ran into a moose who was as startled as I was. Often wondered how I should react if, for example, I couldn't avoid hitting something on the bike, even a coon or dog. I assume the best riding strategy if you think you can't avoid an animal is to let off the gas and proceed straight ahead. Any comments on this??

--- let me repeat it publically - congratulations Scott and Sherry. Grandkids can bring amazing joy to your life.

I'm from Toronto and I could loose a few pounds --- where can I get some Charlie?

I guess Bob you will soon have some time to reflect on the rides you and Becky did (and didn't) make this year and some of the rides you hope to make next season. Happy thoughts!

Lots of interesting posts about screen names. In my case, I was in a rush to get info to decide whether to buy a VR, so I just used my name. These posts made me think a bunch about what I might have used with more thought. Maybe "Preacher" because back when I was a kid, my cousin and I shared a love for motorcycles and we had our own "club" of two. He nicknamed me Preacher. Many years later, he was killed on a motorcycle. While I didn't think of it at the time, it turned out that he was killed on the same year/same color VR as I bought.

Congratulations from Ontario and good luck with becoming pain free.

Headlight cover...
Evan replied to darthandy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Andy. Welcome to the forum. Like you, I bought a 1st gen VR after owning many other bikes and I am amazed at how much I like the VR as well as this forum (hope you become a supporting membver). Sounds like you found a good one. Where are you in Ontario? Also, I have a spare headlight cover, although it has been marked but not penetrated by a stone. -
Ben - I also somehow missed your post. Be strong for your family Ben and take some comfort from the fact that so many of us care and offer our prayers. In my case, it also comforts me to think that my fathers presence continues through the way he has touched so many others while with us.

What - no pictures Charlie?

I stumbled across this site when I was thinking about buying my first VR early last year. Now I am hooked on this site and as a bonus, I have met many members and made many new friends, which I also value very much.

Just sent you a PM Jack to order a brace if you have any left.

--- well, at least start watching out for ice on the road up your way.

Good luck Gregg. Like others, I can relate to your pain, as in my case, the damage was done when I hit a telephone pole on a runaway horse (long story - quick ending). Best wishes for a successful operation and speedy recovery without any more back pain.

This is a good point. For me, while it didn't rub on side, it did force me to sit in a less comfortable riding position and I could no longer put my feet flat on the ground until I cut the gel with scissors so it fit the top of my seat. Very easy to cut and works very well. No need to cut or sew anything but the inside gel pad.
