  1. Just an additional note, again based on my own experience. If you do try using Plastex, you will be pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to work with. However, for your particular job, you may not be successful without taking your fairing off (whick is doable). That may not be the case with fiberglass applied on the inside - at least it wasn't for me. However, as a 1st gen owner, I couldn't get by without my Plastex for other repairs inclduding broken tabs and cracks.
  2. Great story James. Your post is appreciated as many of us share your sentiment.
  3. Enjoyed your trip report and comments Rick. Also impressed with how you dealt with your "challenges" to complete what sounds like a very successful trip.
  4. I had a side cover pin that broke off and I tried to glue it back in position. Mine didn't hold either. I ended up moulding a new pin with Plastex and mounted it, again using Plastex. That was two years ago and it is still holding. However, if I had seen the pictures in this thread, I would have tried to follow one of these fixes, which look good.
  5. Good story Rick! My four grandkids are a major source of joy in my life --- and yes --- every one of them has sat on my VR which is called "Papa's motorcycle". My one daughter has said that as soon as we can find a small enough helmet, I can take them for a ride.
  6. Enjoyed your comment Don, given the recent beer thread.
  7. Had a similar crack although not as far advanced and separated as much as shown in the pictures. I have used Plastex quite a bit on my plastics with great success. However, from my experience, the best fix for a corner crack like that shown in the picture is a fiberglass patch on the inside of the fairing, which as others have noted, is quite accessible. I also was able to jerry-rig a clamp to close the crack and I used scotch tape on the outside so the fiberglass did not show from the outside. I am sure not an expert on this but this is what worked for me.
  8. I have read every post in response to the initial post by Panjamdrum that started this thread. On reflection, I consider my comments on my own drinking habits and preferences to miss some of the main points contained in this thread. In my view, one of the main points is the substance of Goose's comments which I will not repeat or try to express more diplomatically, although I do support his comments. The other key point (again from my perspective) was the comment made by Rick (SilvrT) which was: "I do not see this (VR.org) as a "club" but rather, a group of folks who've joined into an on-line forum because of a few commonalities. We ride a motorcycle and moreover, we ride a Venture. We have various "get-togethers" and rallys but as yet, we are not a "club" as other clubs go." --- then he goes on to say: --- "The minute it becomes a club, with "rules and regulations", etc, etc... that will be the day I depart." I have always struggled in finding words to describe this great forum to others as it does feel like a club, and Rick's comment sure helps me. With that said, I would suggest that any concerns about drinking (eg. having a beer with lunch or concerns over excessive drinking) are best addressed by and among those who choose to ride together on any given occasion. What If?

Bought my first bike at 15 in 1962 in order to make the 22 mile daily trip to my first passion, which was horses. Never been without a bike since then and I ride every day that I can. But I also enjoy some of my other toys. Like Condor, I also love to sail and yes, as you can see, I do have a bunch of other boats. In the winter time, I sure enjoy my snowmobiling on the fabulous trails here in Ontario. Oh, I'm also sentimental about my ford 8n tractor which is the same as the one my grandfather taught me to operate back in the summer of 54.
  10. Took your advice Phil and grabbed a coffee as I watched all of your amazing trip show. Well done! My compliments on the trip and how you have shared it with us.

    I'm hosed

Hang in Doug. It will be worth it.
  12. That shouldn't happen to anyone but to happen just before you leave for the Smokies - sure feel for you Tom!
  13. After reading of a few bolt failures, I bought a new bolt from a dealer here in Canada. It was a few bucks more here, but readily available.
  14. OK --- your new dance partner may look and smell better than charlie, but can Rover dance on a table?
  15. Read the entire report Charlie - facinating - but the race took place several months ago. How did it do?
  16. Thanks Charlie for the "bump". I'm good to go for a while now.
  17. Thanks Wayne for letting us know about the Saturday ride. sounds good. Unfortunately, we must miss another one as we are heading north for the weekend tomorrow. Hope you and others have good weather and enjoy the ride!
  18. I went from E2's to E3's on my 88VR and so far, I am glad that I did based on performance. Geting this type of mileage will be a bonus!
  19. I bet theer were many more glass fish than you showed in the picture. Happy fishing Charlie!
  20. I was thinking of posting a clutch question myself. My issue is different than Brian's, but I will tag on to his post. In my case, I sometimes get a bit of chatter when starting off in 1st gear which I notice more as my temp increases. Other than that, gear changing is exceptionally smooth without chatter or slippage. However, a week or so ago, when I was two up pulling a trailer and cracked the throttle wide open in 5th gear to check for slippage, there was some above about 6k rpm. Any suggestions?

    Oh deer!

Gary - Glad it was not worse for you. There sure seems to be more deer on the roads these days in our area. Its affecting my riding as I find myself going slower in more vulnerable areas and in the evenings.
  22. --- mine took me down 5 miles of remote, single lane, stone roads recently. Apparenntly, it was the shortest route to my final destinaition.
  23. I also often take along my EpiPen for bee bites which for me, could be fatal. After reading all the posts, I am inclined to leave it in the bike along with a new first aid kit rather than try to remember it. Also, Marcarl and Wizard made a good point on our ride to MD. They said be sure to tell others on the ride that I am carrying an EpiPen and where to find it.
  24. Thanks BuckShot and others for these comments. I will play with my preload (which I left on 2) as well as shock pressure. This is another example of how great this site is for useful info and support. I love it!
  25. Had the same problem which I understand is a common one. Went to Marcarl's and we took apart and cleaned the starter switch/light switch. There is an excellent post showing step by step pics for this. No problems since then.
