Do a search on punching the filler neck. Once done you can put in the full six gallons. After punching don't fill it to the brim and park in warm sunlight. Or you will discover how well the vent pukes out excess fuel. Mike

On the subject of torque to yield bolts. To tell if the bolt is completely ruined . Pinch two fingers or finger and thumb together one on each side of the bold. While doing this slide the bolt between the fingers. Start at the head and slide it to the end of the threads and back again. If you feel a little dimple anywhere in the bolt it is stretched and no longer serviceable. Bolts that pass this test mayor may not work. But those that fail are for sure bad. Mike

Do not use any cleaners in the oil. Change the oil and filter then run the engine for ten to fifteen minutes. Change the oil and filter again. You are good to go as far as oil is concerned. Use a good grade of detergent oil. Changing the coolant when you do the head gasket is generally good enough. Just be sure to add extra water pump lubricant or you may be changing the pump in a few weeks. On a side note. Antifreeze molecules are coarse like liquid sandpaper. Depending on how long the engine was run with a seeping head gasket engine main or rod bearings may have sustained some damage. Unfortunately only time will tell. If it holds up great. If not it is not because of anything you did or did not do. It is because of the nature of liquid sandpaper in the oil. I have done hundreds and hundreds of head gaskets and engines. The odds are somewhat in your favor but not completely. Good Luck Mike

I don't know how to tell you this but it might have bitten you. Some of the old automobile electronic voltage regulators would burn out if you tried to test them without the case being grounded. Unfortunately I don't have enough experience with the Venture regulators to know for sure. So anyone with experience is welcome to chime in here. Mike

There is no need to drill any holes. Just put the short end of the guard in a vise and pull the long end until the desired angle is achieved. Mike

I often heard that retirement isn't so good. But since retiring I have come to realize that is what is said by those who are still working. What I really don't understand is how I ever had time to go to work in the first place. I must say retirement is the best thing I ever did. Congratulations on yours. I hope you enjoy your life as much as I do mine. Mike

Oil leak and smoking???
MikeWa replied to Wesley G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The smoke from the exhaust is probably caused by one of two things. First is condensation in the exhaust. Just remember water vapor is a natural by product of good combustion. This smoke, steam should clear when the engine warms up. Second is oil in the air intake (filter) from having the oil overfilled or less likely from some sort of piston ring problem. Returning the oil level to normal will not immediately clear this. It takes time for an oil saturated plenum and air filter to deplete this excess. If you inspect the air filters and find them saturated replace them. Also be sure to check the drain tubes. Make sure they are connected and free of obstruction. Mike -
Rear tire change.....what to do???
MikeWa replied to Kettlinton's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
First time around I would remove both saddlebags. It will be easier to see what is going on. Also while the wheel is off be sure to lube the rear wheel clutch pins. Mike -
Borderline is a heads up for you. It means you are not full blown diabetic yet. You can still tip the scales back in your favor. It is a pain in the ars but diet and exercise, diet and exercise. Did I say diet and exercise? Reduce the carbs, loose some weight and you may be surprised at the results. Wishing You All the Best Mike

How to instal a tire with zip ties I would have never thought of this.
MikeWa replied to tufftom4's topic in Watering Hole
Thanks for the post. Very slick method of mounting the tire. But for those of us who are cheap the large wire ties are reusable. There is a release in the latch. Mike -

It could be a poor ground connection, a poor power connection under the fairing or a bad bulb. It will help you a lot if you can make it flicker by tapping on it. Mike

I can understand their thinking. The Slingshot is as much like a small sports car as a motorcycle. Except it does not have the automobile required safety equipment. My understanding is in Washington State it does not require a motorcycle endorsement to operate it. But it can be licensed with motorcycle plates. Go figure. Mike
