Electrical question on an 84
dingy replied to raybear71's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If your bike does not have cruise control, I have a throttle side switch. It's probably the one I cleaned when I made the write up linked above in 2nd post. Also have a clutch side switch. And the RLU. PM me if you still need them. Gary -
Flywheel bolt question
dingy replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My guess is flywheel puller. Don't ask how I know this. It is also related to why I have a 12 x 1.25 tap. Gary -

There was a post a few weeks ago that Dano had pointed out an issue with one of the washers on the clutch basket would cause a similar problem if not put in the right place. You might PM Dano and ask him about it. I don't recall what thread it was. Gary -
Electrical question on an 84
dingy replied to raybear71's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The reserve lighting unit (RLU) could be bad also. Does the white light on the dash light up (Headlamp)? Is there a good bulb in this indicator. This is the warning light that the RLU has detected a problem with the lighting. It is a black unit about 4" x 2 1/2" x 1". Has an 8 conductor cable running into it. It sets behind the headlight with the relays. I probably have a spare if you want one. Here is a link to the wiring diagrams that are on this site. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42384 Gary -
First thing to do is the resoldering that is detailed in link below it does refer to an E4 error, but it can't hurt to do it for this one also. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=493 Diagram of E6 troubleshooting attached. Also check all the connections on the rear of bike involved with CLASS, there are at least 4, counting main harness 20 pin. Gary

Flywheel bolt question
dingy replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You are correct about the 12-1.25 threads. I have a spare bolt if you need it, it is the drilled variety, stator oiler. I only found the bolt, not the internal bar for the oiler. I also have a tap that size I can lend you. Let me know if you want it, I can put in mail tomorrow. Gary -

I should charge for each time I post these two pictures. Gary -
Pictures attached of unit & supplied instructions. I didn't use the scotchlock taps they supplied with it, I prefer soldered connections. I had horn & headlight switch functions backwards in previous post. Gary

This was a scheduled interview in this case, not a spur of the moment thing at an accident. The Ohio State Patrol often does these type things for public awareness. Seeing as how they are federally mandated to be legal in all 50 states, I don't think this officer made any sort of statement that was in conflict with the law and common sense. Many people seem to be fixated on the fact that a flashing light will cause them to pull over. In Ohio emergency vehicles must display either a Blue or Red flashing light. School bus often drive on foggy or low visibility days with a flashing amber light. Once the public becomes educated and aware of the modulator, it will be common place. The fact that it does 'Distract' drivers and focus in on the modulating light is just why I use it. It differs very little from all the other roadside distractions that are present. Billboards with TV like displays, sometimes excessive signage on roadways, advertisements on buses & trucks. There are strict guidelines on the amount of intensity and frequency that the modulated lights must operate within. Also modulation must be automatically be disabled in low light conditions such as dusk through dawn. The one I use can easily be disabled by rapidly pressing horn twice, this keeps it from being an annoyance to riders in front when riding in groups. The frequency of modulation can also be changed by flipping High beam switch twice rapidly. Also if modulator is set to off, pressing horn initiates it for 3 seconds. Copy of Federal law attached. The friction plates and steel plates are the same on VMax 85-07. The RSV's use the same plates from 99-10. The spring, pressure plate & clutch boss have the same PN's on the VMax's as the RSV's show. Go to partshark.com and you can compare part #'s. Gary

Below is a link to an article in the local paper where a Ohio State Patrolman endorses the use of a headlight modulator to make bikes more visible. He doesn't specifically use the term modulator but he does describe the effect. Copied in part here. "As a motorcycle driver, you need to drive more defensively than you do when you're driving a car," Randall said. The sergeant said a number of newer features enhance safety. "There are some headlights that almost look like they're flashing as they come at you," Randall said. Other enhancements include brighter turn signals and brake lights. "It's unfortunate that you have to spend the extra money, but in the end it's worth it," Randall said. http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com/article/20120331/NEWS01/203310314/1002/rss01 Gary

I have a Route 66 on mine. It came on the VMax rim I got last year. It has been fine as far as handling goes. I'm not one that you want to judge mileage on a rear tire by. It wouldn't have been my first choice if I had to buy a tire, but I wanted rim & tire still had little rubber protrusions on it so I am going to use it up. I have an Avon Venom on front & very happy with it. Handling issues are hard to diagnose from a keyboard. Does front end collapse much if you sit on bike with front brake pulled in and rock against handlebars hard? If not, progressives are doing their job. When you say felt bad in turns, do you mean twisty road type pushing the bike hard turn, or a parking lot type turn? Could be many other things cause a 'high speed' mushy feeling. Swing arm bushings loose, steering head bearings could need attention. Pre-load on front & rear axle bearings, or bearings themselves. Air pressure either end. Loose fork brace (Condor may still have great replacement) Gary

1984 venture linked brake system
dingy replied to Jay A's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My concern with linked brakes, as I have mentioned before, is that you always are applying a front brake when stopping. There are some occasions when the use of a front brake is not really advantageous, such as in gravel or at an oil soaked intersection in wet weather. I am 'old school' and just like having control of both ends independent of each other. Gary -
I'll send $21 for mine, that's what the highest single auction was for. $16.00 + $5.00 shipping. I challenge the rest to do this. It's not about a cheap shirt, it's about helping some sick kids get taken care of !!! Gary

Exhaust collector fix
dingy replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What did you find to use for the clamps on the Marks pipe ?? I was going to put some muffler cement on mine when I put it on. Skydoc said he has put them on & after some miles they seat in and quit leaking. I figure a little goo will stop that. May be a pain to get off, but will cross that bridge when I get there. Gary -

1/4 Mile?
dingy replied to TimRobertson06's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Holy crap batman. I know we tease the 2nd genners about speed, but these charts take it to a new level. The road glide is one of the slowest bikes I regularly ride with and it's posted times are 13.93 @ 93.1 for an S.E. 2000 and 14.39 @ 90.7 for a FLTR/FLTR1 1998 The RSV is 13.66 @93.6 for an 1999 and the RSTD is 14.57 @ 90.0 for a 1997. No 1st gens listed, but it isn't going to be that slow. I had a Gremlin that ran low 14's. Gary -
OK, I'll be the dumb butt that asks the question. Why is the left side better than the right side ??? Gary
