  1. Some pictures of a 1st gen switch. 1st picture is non-class on top, class on bottom. 2nd shows a class contact plate. There is an extra set of the contact plates on this as opposed to non class equipped bike. 4th shows detent in housing at bottom inside. Last picture shows order of parts without contact plate. Gary
  2. Impact driver with tight fitting bit in it. And a good size hammer. Hit once and hard, as I use to say. Also heating screw a little, not cherry red, may help break loctite bond. Gary
  3. Here are a few pictures of my 83 in that area. Verify that the center two screws are in correct holes. 2nd picture. Gary
  4. Actually, this is the second one from this group that I heard had a few misses. To help the connectors get a better connection there are a couple of options. First is to replace the harness end connectors with the replacement ones I sent along just for that. Second, and a tad easier, is to take needle nose pliers and twist the male terminal on the adapter harness 6 & 8 pin plugs. Just a tad, about 1 or 2 degree. This will help them engage better with the plugs on the harness If you can get computer hooked up to bike, there is a pure stock map file that Ignitech sent with TCI's. It is in the "Ignitech Supplied Files" directory on CD you have. MAP file name is "v-max old venture v88.ign". Ignitech refers to the 4 pickup coil bikes as "old" and 1 pickup coil bikes as "new". File in same directory named "120221b_tcip4A_v88" will run TCIP4 software. Call me when you get to point of doing this and I will help you through it. My contact info is in directory on CD "Contact info". Generally home by 4:30 pm. Gary
  5. Do you have a way to hook a laptop to TCI? I could send you my module if you don't, and send me yours back. I am several weeks from needing it. I am in process of sanding body parts in order to paint it. I can get you a MAP file that doesn't have the timing curve pushed out like the one I sent out does. It isn't drastic, but might make a difference. I have don't recall ever hitting much below 25mpg with my bike the way it has been modified and on days when I was out 'testing' it. Gary
  6. 1st 3 are pictures of my 1st 1st gen. Bike was apart for some minor work & cleaning. This was an 84. I haven't came across another set of the turn signal tail light covers yet. 3rd picture shows some of the obscure chrome it had. Swing arm both stands and final drive. Last picture is something I am trying to own, different radiator side fins. Gary
  7. This is a 2nd Gen VMax collector (1700cc) bike and not applicable to the 1200/1300 V4's in our bikes. Sound quality depends on all the factors from the airbox to the exhaust tips. Cams & vboost have a large influence. Gary
  8. A VMax exhaust will not fit on a Venture in almost all cases. This is due to the VMax's do not have a monoshock like the Ventures. The collector is run through the area occupied by the monoshock. A kerker header may work, but it requires removing the centerstand. Gary
  9. Quite a few on ebay for less than $10 before shipping. Use this search string: yamaha venture headlight -gt -700 -1999 -2000 -2001 -2002 -2003 -2004 -2005 -2006 -2007 -2008 -2009 -rsv -600 -snow -star -enticer -blaster -600cc -480cc -wave -viper -vector -xenon -phazer -mountain -exciter -snow* -srx -venom -vt600 -vt480 -vt700 -sxr -carbide Gary
  10. Actually, I was testing Speedy out last fall, and somewhere in triple digits, mine blew off. So the spare I had is now on the scooter. Is there a lock screw on it, I thought it just pushed on shaft. Gary
  11. Howard, This is a 4 year old thread, I think Squidly may have it under control. Sometimes these old ones pop up now & then. This original item was the connector for the California vapor canister. Gary
  12. Does the clutch seem to be disengaged as it sets now? Put it in gear & see if wheel will rotate Just a guess, but when it was reinstalled, something in slave is hanging up, fully extended, thus disengaging clutch. This would then allow for no further fluid to be pushed into slave, thus giving a solid clutch lever. Gary
  13. There is an individual filter screen in each carb. Located just ahead of the float level valve. To bench sync, try shining a bright light from under the carbs. Look down in the throat of the carbs and you will see a sliver of light where each butterfly is open. Set #2 to with the idle screw to where the light just disappears. Then do #1 with screw on throttle linkage, then over to #3 & #4, not sure which one is 1st, but by trial & error you can get them real close this way. Gary
  14. First track point was at 9:28 am Turnaround was at 19:12 pm Less than 10 hrs elapsed. He shows as being in Edgewood NM at 21:23, this looks to be about 20% of the return leg. Appears he is doing what he set out to. Gary
  15. He also has an Ignitech TCI he put in a couple of weeks ago. It will be interesting to see what it does to his gas mileage. Gary
  16. My idea also, Could be a trailer raffle at Oberlin MD for some other worthy cause. Can't really see pulling a trailer behind Speedy, just not its style !!!! Gary
  17. Finally got a 2nd prototype made for the 6 pot brake conversion. Local High school made it on a 3D printer. Red was color in machine at time. Just a little more tweaking on the model for the height of the ledge caliper bolts to, so pads will be completely on rotor. Need to drop about .06" for this. The speedometer cable notches in left bracket need adjusted slightly. And the holes for the caliper cap screws need to be made to through holes. I have the aluminum plate for the final metal versions. Probably will get them machined next week. Gary
  18. So it wasn't the big black hose that surprised you then, Huh? Must have been the gush of that green slimy stuff coming out of it. None of us were mechanics when born, all this stuff is a lifelong learning experience. Some good, some hurt, some cost. But all lessons. Gary
  19. I, of all people hear can sympathize with you on brake upgrades. On my 4th set of brakes on the front of the 83. Stock set, dual pot MKII 4 pots 2001 4 pot R1's Now getting close with the 6 pot 2011 R1's. Just got the second rapid prototype bracket today & the piece of 6061 aluminum plate arrived from McMaster to machine the working brackets from this afternoon. This doesn't include the set of 6 pot YFZ's that I have that never made it on the bike, I got the 2011 R1's shortly after I got them. And that's only the front. Rears were: Stock set, dual pot MKII 4 pot 1986 VMax dual pot. If I can get a bracket designed & built I think I will take one of the R1 calipers and attach it in place of the under slung VMax caliper on rear now. Have fun, the Mod Monkey bites again. Gary
  20. Why is it you are changing the master cylinder? Do you bottom pedal out? Gary
  21. I thought you said you were an investigator??? Was that big hose hiding behind a 2nd gen faux air cooling cover the reason you didn't see it. Powers of observation my butt. Gary
  22. Standard radiator cover is 14 15/16" inside at mounting boss points. Ventureline radiator is 15 3/4" +/- at inside mount points. This can flex some so don't hurt yourself getting down to .005". It can probably flex an 1/8" on each side. Its bendable aluminum. Got this one from Bongo a few years ago, it has had a face lift & powder coated. Gary
  23. 83-85's are different bore than the 86-93's Gary
  24. 7.2 ft/lbs Do you have a service manual yet. All the torque specs are in the appendices. Gary
  25. Mechanically, they are the same I think, but there are some graphics differences between the years. Tach may not match. Nothing major, but they are different from an MKI to an MKII. Gary
