  1. Yea I forgot about the hike. You need to be in a little bit of condition to do it. One thing I regret is not taking turns walking down there and getting a picture like that. I got one of a couple of young boys out on it. Their Mom was taking a picture too. When she got done she hollered for them to get off because it was making her nervous for them to be out there. I said Its making me nervous and they aren't even my kids. When we were hiking in my friend said that when I told him about it he wanted to know more so he googled it. Turned out somebody had fallen close to the waterfall a couple of weeks before we were there and died.
  2. I don't have pictures but mine was missing the bolts and had the zip tie thing. I don't like dealing with dealers so I took care of it myself and it's been long enough I don't remember everything. I think I used some epoxy and fibreglass to reinforce the broken tabs. Then I crashed at 30000 miles and all the plastics got replaced.
  3. Where did you go in Southeast Mo? I go that way at least a couple of times a year but fro the North instead of the south like you did. I always fill up in Steeleville or Salem because after that you can go a long ways without a station if you are hitting the backroads.
  4. Petit Jean State park is very scenic with a neat story to boot. Close to there is the highest point in Ar., Mt. Magazine. It is scenic too. About any highway you chose to get to those places from the Mo border will be scenic and curvy. Could take Hwy 125 south from I44. It is considered Missouris Tail of the Dragon and has a free ferry ride after it crosses the border. I could tell you about Hawksbill krag but it would be a tough ride on a Venture although when I went a friend rode his Electra Glide. If you go to Petit Jean be sure to check out Petit Jeans gravesite at the top of the mountain. Very easy to get to and a great view.
  5. I'm not really a clean fanatic, more like a ride fanatic but one thing I have always hated is to actually clean the bike and go for a ride and get back with a layer of dust. I finally decided that it must be static causing it to accumalate so the last time I cleaned it I wiped it with static guard. It seems to be working. One other thing, the black is beautiful but I will never have another black vehicle unless it is to cheap to pass up.
  6. Oh no. It can't be. That would mean that it has been 35 years since the big 200 year birthday that seems like it was just a couple of years ago to me.
  7. I welded the nut on the right side to put a bolt in to tighten things up but discovered it was unnecessary.
  8. I made my own several years ago. No plans. Hope I don't forget anything because it's been a while. There is a brace that runs between the saddle bag frame work. I removed it and cut a couple of 7 gauge pcs the same shape as the sides. Used a transfer punch to transfer the mounting hole locations to one piece and then used that piece to mark the other on. If I remember right I tapped the mounting holes to the same thread as the original. Then I mounted the pieces where the brace used to be. Then I carefully measured the width of the cross piece and cut a piece of 1 1/2" square tubing to fit. I fitted it in where it was parallel to the ground and welded it in. If anything it needs to tilt up a little so when there is weight on the bike it is parallel. Then I cut another piece of 1 1/2" square tubing 4" long to make a reciever. The tubing needs to be 1/8" and then a 1 1/4" hitch will slip in. I remember I had to grind the internal weld down smooth to get it to go in. I actually never used a factory hitch because I built my single wheel trailer with a 1 1/4" tounge that slipped right in. I was just out looking and noticed I also had to weld 2 small tabs out the back for more mounting holes. http://i932.photobucket.com/albums/ad166/midnightventure/trailer%20hitch/CIMG1246.jpg http://i932.photobucket.com/albums/ad166/midnightventure/trailer%20hitch/CIMG1244.jpg http://i932.photobucket.com/albums/ad166/midnightventure/trailer%20hitch/CIMG1243.jpg http://i932.photobucket.com/albums/ad166/midnightventure/trailer%20hitch/CIMG1242-1.jpg
  9. That looks like a set of pads that are so far gone that the wear bars have disappered on one.
  10. I got the Ride Like a Pro CD a few years ago and did the exercises. I thought then that if somebody rode like that a lot that there would be clutch problems in their future.
  11. My bolts where missing originally too. Had the little wire tie and that was it. It's amazing how many are like that. It almost has to be the dealers employees assembling them wrong. They had put my front wheel on backwards also. I caught that after a couple of thousand miles and made them replace the tire even though I had to ride 260 miles round trip to do it.
  12. There was a point a few years ago when I thought I was going to need a big chunk of money for a family emergency. I knew I could sell my Sportster for close to what I paid for it but I would lose about 5000 dollars on the Venture. Also my wife didn't enjoy riding the Sportster so I sold it. I have a friend that is the only one I know personally that rides more than I do. He has a 2001 Electra Glide that has 188000 miles on it. He is self employed in the sign business. Lives 2 miles down a gravel road. He will hook a trailer to the bike with ladder and tools and do installations. Rides all winter and usually makes a couple of long trips a year.
  13. I had the carb backfire when my bike was brand new. After I bought my synch tool and did the job it has never back fired again. It has 89000 miles on it now.
  14. You still have me confused. What is a wingnut?
  15. How do you know they were racing to the next bar? Cruiser riders are the only ones I know that seem to think a good ride is going 5 miles down the road to a bar.
  16. I know from experience that if you tie off to the passenger grab handles that the bolts holding them on can break.
  17. They are available here. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=90 I don't know if you will have access as a trial member. Hope so.
  18. I ride two completely different kinds of bikes. On one (the Venture) the Japanese cruiser riders wave at me. On my dual sport they ignore me as bad as the Harley riders and the BMW riders. When I am riding it I don't lift a finger until I see somebody elses hand go up since I am so used to being ignored. And now days I am probably riding it more than the Venture because it is a ton of fun, gets better gas mileage and will only cost about 1/4th the Venture to replace when its wore out. Just miss that stereo.
  19. When my Venture was just a few months old and still felt terribly heavy I rode from Eldon to Empire CO, 800 miles in 14 hours at the end of July. Mid 90s. I wanted to camp in the mountains. Got off the bike and I felt like I was drunk for about a half hour until I got rehydrated and had a snack. Rode 2500 miles in 5 days and the bike has never felt heavy again.
  20. Me when I wear out my DR which hopefully won't be for another 50000 miles.
  21. I have never understood some peoples need to slap a bunch of extra weight onto an already heavy and good looking bike.
  22. Don I can do that too. I was just being lazy hoping that somebody had personal experience with it.
  23. My last rear brake pads lasted forever compared to the originals but they also wore down the rotor. Looking on ebay I saw several off of the original Royal Stars and Royal Star Tour Deluxes. It looks to me like they should work on my Royal Star Venture. Does anybody know that for sure?
  24. http://www.pashnit.com/8days/8days1.htm This is a story about a guy that put huge miles on a first generation.
  25. I read another report on this earlier that stated that the cop car pulled out in front of him to try to get him to stop. About the same as shooting him to get him to stop.
