  1. I am cooler in my black mesh pants and jacket than just jeans and tee shirt. I also have the LD underpants for long trips and I believe they do make a difference. I rode my DR 660 miles over 2 days through AR Memorial day weekend with them on.
  2. If I am riding early in the morning and the temp is not going to get over 85 I wear my Aerostich Roadcrafter. Especially if there is a chance of having to ride home in the rain since it is waterproof. When the temp is going to end up in the 90s I wear my Joe Rocket mesh jacket and pants with a nylon winbreaker over it if itis still cool when I leave. Wear an open face on the Venture and a full face on the DR. The windshield on the DR is not real effective. Steel toed Redwings unless I know I am going to see water, then Joe Rocket waterproof boots.
  3. It's funny how we can love to ride but at the same time we know how dangerous it is. When I was younger I was almost a motorcycle evangelist. Taught all my sisters and my freinds to ride. Bought my son an 80cc yamaha when he was about 6. He ended up crashing and getting burnt. He still rode it but he would rather ride the gocart. Never did progress to anything bigger. When I bought the Venture Iasked him if he would like my old 650 Maxim. No interest and by then I was older and smarter and new how dangerous they really were so it didn't upset me. Now he is in China and considered riding over there. They are really crazy over there. Luckily he gave up that idea. One suggestion. Think about a Dual Sport. Much more agile than a cruiser. Since I got my DR650 I really wish that I had started on one. I rode mine 670 miles down through Arkansas and Mo this weekend.
  4. I just rode 670 miles yesterday and today through Ar. in the 70 to 95 degree heat with full mesh and full face helmet. I really think I am cooler with the mesh than back when I rode with jeans and a tshirt. I did get an early start both days. 366 yesterday and done at 4:30. 300 today and home at 1:00.
  5. I think I would go ahead and flush that tank.
  6. He is somebody that I pay attention to when he posted tech stuff. Very knowledgable.
  7. It just happens I have been chasing some of these same problems. When I was checking my AC voltage I got 27 volts between all three stator pins at the regulator connector at idle and about 70 volts at 3000 RPM. The diodes all tested ok on the R-R but I finally decided that had to be the problem. Got my new R-R yesterday and put it in tonight. Seems to have fixed the problem but I will know more for sure after I ride 30 miles to work tomorrow. Last time rode the Venture when I got there I realized the battery was almost dead and turned around and went home without turning off the bike. The radio went off and the engine started popping and cracking. Ran home in 4th gear and the voltage actually went up but was well below 12 volts when I got home. Tested at 8.5 volts in the parking lot at work but 10 when I got back home.
  8. No the first folder doesn't have to be full. Its been a while since I did one. You copy 99 or less songs to the card. Create 5 folders called CD02,CD03,CD04,CD05,CD06 on the card. Copy 99 or less songs into each folder. The player takes care of CD01 itself. Hope I haven't forgotten something.
  9. 5/18/12 I still think this is a good article but the test for the rectifier-regulator isn't conclusive. Mine tested good but I was still having problems. I went through the tests for everything else in the service manual. It doesn't give a test for the RR but after everything else is eliminated they say replace the RR so I did. Fixed the problem. The test in the article tests the diodes and looks for shorts but just because the RR passes there could still be a problem with it. If the diode tests show fail then the RR is definitely bad. original post I don't know if this is allowed but here is one of the best articles on the subject I have read. Competeing site. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002007&id=400 If this isn't allowed somebody nuke it.
  10. I really doubt that a 2009 would have bad corrosion problems already at the regulator. Digital voltmeters are so cheap now days and so valuable for diagnosing these kind of problems. My 2002 has 92000 miles on it and I had my regulator connecter loose just this morning for an inspection and I was suprised how clean it did look being mounted down low and in front like it is.
  11. A lot of better choices than the D404 out there. The tread on it wants to follow cracks and grooves in the highway. When you wear it out try the Elite 3.
  12. I am pretty sure the original seat on my DR650 would have done serious damage if I ever rode it 4 hours before I replaced it. On another note when I saw the headline I figured BMW was getting sued because of all the low mileage fork failures they have had with serious accidents resulting.
  13. I used OSB board back when it was 5 dollars a sheet. Easy to fasten things to and if I had to I could take a piece off to run a wire .
  14. I work in a plant that had a mass shooting several years ago. It happened on the overlap between 2nd and 3rd shifts and I am on days. Very traumatizing to everybody. I didn't know the shooter but I knew some of the victims. Afterwards we were told not to bother people that had been there with questions about what happened and they did seem to not want to talk about it. After about a year some of the people I regularly had contact with started talking. The shooter had been one of the best workers and was getting some of the tougher assignments. Also it became known that one of the guys shot had a history of bullying. But then at least one of the guys I did know was a real quiet nice guy. He survived but still has lasting effects. He is probably even quieter now. It turned out the guy had just bought the weapon a month before. It was a retired Hwy Patrol gun. That resulted in them changing their procedures when they bought new guns.
  15. Mine had that when it was new. After the first carb synch I've not had it anymore. 92000 miles.
  16. I too was one of the early purchasers and I also want to thank Jesus for developing this product.
  17. My wife works at Walmart and she had them order me several. Later I was walking through and noticed a bunch on the shelf and I thought that I had never picked them up so I bought them all. When I got home there were all the ones I bought earlier so I am well stocked up.
  18. Those things are just plain mean. My Dad always had about a dozen animals around when I was growing up. He drug in a Canadian goose from somewhere. It was my job to grease and change the oil in his dump truck every weekend. It was a rare week that the goose wouldn't sneak up on me while I was under the truck and attack.
  19. I put in the PCW spring alone several years ago and was happy with it. With about 90,000 miles I replaced the fiber disks and changed the half disk for a full one. Now it doesn't have as large an area of slippage which makes it a little harder to precisely control but I have gotten used to it. If I ever have to change them again I will probably go back to original with the PCW spring.
  20. When I was in my early 20s my father got drunk at a bar and got into a fight with somebody much bigger and younger than him and ended up stabbing him. I decided that I would never let myself get like that. 1 or 2 beers a year for me.
  21. And I had the impression you were an old hippie.
  22. Around here I hear of a lot more cruiser riders getting killed late at night because they were riding drunk than crotch rocket riders causing problems. That being said a friend of mines teenager was pulling a wheelie on our main drag and a lady pulled out. He brought it down to fast and crashed and slid into her and was killed. They sued but I never agreed with it because a bike pointed up in the air is not near as recognizable as one in a normal riding position. He was also going about 90 in a 35.
  23. I have recently converted to hammock camping too. For solo camping as long as you have 2 trees at the right distance it is great.
  24. Yes I did. Thanks.
