  1. That was my first bike. Can't be this one though because I put 11000 miles on it in the year I owned it. Wrecked it 3 times too. Then went about 28 years before I had another one. Hope it's at least another 28 years before the next one. I got it up to 100 once on a real steep down hill and blew a hole ina piston. Cost about 35 dollars back then at the dealer to get it fixed.
  2. Thanks for the replies. I got it going this morning. It was 16 degrees outside. Blew out the pilot orifice. Got the pilot to light and turned the thermostat up and it took off. Then I checked the out put pressure and it was 7 WI and supposed to be 10. Used the internal regulator to adjust that. It's burning good and I believe putting out more heat than it did before. I think that I had a hard time believing that it could be plugged when it had only been installed for 2 months. Maybe a spider was working in the box all summer while I was waiting for the attic to cool off enough to work in.
  3. Here is basically what I built although I made mine neater and carefully marked the lines on my board ahead. Then you have to be real careful to get your waterline at zero. http://www.komar.org/faq/manometer/
  4. The line is only about 5' from the tank to the heater. I have the 11 wc that I'm supposed to have at the control valve on the heater. Tommorow I am going to take out the pilot line and blow out the orifice.
  5. I work for Modine and I bought and installed one of their ceiling hung heaters that was on clearance. Installed it in Sept. and it worked perfect until last week when the weather cooled off drastically. It is hooked up to a 100 lb bottle that probably has a foot of liquid left in it. The pilot went out and I can't get it to light again. I assumed it was a pressure problem. Yesterday it got into the 50s and it worked again. I figured that confirmed what I thought. Today it cooled off again. I made a pressure gauge for inches of water column from plans on the internet. Hooked it up to the input side of the valve ( a Robertshaw 720-402) and it measured exactly 11 inches just like it was supposed to. Part of my problem is that the company sent instructions for an intermittent pilot valve and mine is a standing pilot. When I hooked the gauge up to the output side it shows no pressure and of course I can't get it to light again. What does an expert think?
  6. A long time ago I said I would never have a touring bike. Just as well drive a car. In 2002 that changed. Shortly there after a friend offered to sell me a nice trailer to pull behind it. I passed and now I pull a small trailer. That probably qualifies me as an old fart. I know my wife sure rides a lot more with me now though.
  7. I read some where and right at the moment I can't say where that the places that have banned texting the accident rates have actually gone up because the the texters are trying to hide their phones.
  8. Rider had been my favorite and the only one that I subscribed to but recently they seem to be the European high dollar motorcycle magazine. After Larry Grodsky died they replaced him with a guy that doesn't make sense. Most of their ride reports are from the west coast. I think I am going to let my subscription lapse. Motorcycle magazines do make me want new bikes.
  9. I have a 10" Emachines netbook that I bought for the motorcycle. I ended up using it at home all the time so my laptop has been moved to the garage to use for a jukebox and electronic motorcycle manuals.
  10. Sounds like they are trying to figure it out like a non mechanic would. Just throw parts at it instead of diagnosing the problem.
  11. Its deer season here this week so I haven't been riding to work. Every morning there is a fresh blood patch showing that one got hit. 26 years of riding and driving 60 miles a day in deer country and I haven't hit one yet. Starting to worry me. Afraid the odds will catch up. I probably run 7 mph slower on the bike in the mornings this time of the year.

  13. On the right side there is a large Phillips screw. It's almost more a knob than a screw.
  14. That's what I do to. I don't spend much time on gravel roads but they have never been very dirty when I checked.
  15. 85000 miles and I am still runnimg the originals.
  16. Arkansas just gets more beautiful further south from Eureka Springs. I have been down there exploring 3 times this year. Once on the Venture once on the DR and once in the Trans Am. I thought Mt. Magazine had to be prettiest place in the state and when I took my wife down I stopped at Petet Jean Mountain first. It put Mt. Magazine to shame. There is a little town called Oark with an old general store that is pretty well supported by bikers. Curviest road to get there I have ever been on. Curvier than any of the paved roads in Colorado that I have been on.
  17. I know people in their mid 70s that sure wish they had waited till 65 to start drawing Social Security. Everybody has to evaluate their own health and decide what is in their best interest. I grew up dirt poor in a big family. I don't ever want to have to scrape by again.
  18. Right now it would be more like 1,000,000 times 1% per year which comes to 10000 dollars a year. It's been a long time since I had to survive on that. Let me know what bank gives 5% a month.
  19. If you reread what I wrote you should notice that I said i couldn't live the way I want to. Also I feel kind of guilty about my generation putting the next generation so far into debt so unlike the people with bumper stickers that say they are spending their kids inheritance I intend to leave my kids some.
  20. With cars I have a lot of choices. With American made motorcycles they didn't have a 4 cylinder touring bike. There aren't very many holes in the car lineup but there are lots of holes in the bike lineup. Also when I bought my Venture getting a Harley was a year wait. I think they build a fine bike and I totally support the people that ride one.
  21. My Trans Am was made in Canada. I always try to buy American and the Trans Am doesn't bother me because we have so much in common with Canadians. I am 55 and if somebody handed me a million dollars I still wouldn't feel like I could retire. If I live to 80 or more and the rates of return available now I couldn't live the way I want to when I retire. I am healthy and take care of myself so I am not one of those people that assume I am going to die by 70.
  22. I leave mine on reserve all the time. My daily 30 mile commute is mostly on curvy roads and I would hate to be passing somebody in a tight spot and start sputtering.
  23. You might want to put a little gas in just to make absolutely sure it has some.
  24. A friend of mine that I work with has 2 real nice Harleys But he doesn't like to park them at work because they get dirty sitting outside the plant. We used to get together once a week and play pool. He has a real nice pool table too. I told him I would ride my Jap bike and park it outside his house so his Harley friends would think he had bought a Yamaha. He jokingly said he'd run over it if I did. Anyway he now has a Chinese scooter and rides it to work almost every day. It was 40 degrees yesterday and I asked him if he wore a helmet since it was so cold. No helmet but all the leathers. Hard core anti helmet which is part of what he likes about the scooter because here in Missouri if it's less than 49 ccs you don't have to wear one. Any way he would have fit your example tatoos, burley armed , leathers and riding a scooter. But he does have the 2 real nice Harleys that he rides on longer trips.
  25. I also noticed that I was getting blowed around a lot more on the interstate when I had the smaller tire on. I was glad to get it wore out and replace it with the regular size.
