  1. Since I'm at work & can't look it up, can someone tell me if the fuel pump is in the tank? This morning I started off to work, as usual. Got about a half mile up the road & bike starts stumbling. Oh yeah. Forgot to flip petcock yesterday back to reserve. I usually don't put it to "ON", but, just to keep things working, I turned it down. Turned it back to reserve, but, bike will hardly start, if it starts at all, then dies within 15 seconds or so. I was actually going to get gas before heading to work, as I was 14 miles into "F". Good thing from my home to where I was, is all up hill, so, I turned around & coasted back down the hill to home & took the truck to work. I've heard it's not good to run the gas down to empty if the fuel pump is in the tank because it uses the gas as a lubricant & coolant & if you're that low, it could damage the fuel pump. Is this an issue with this bike? I've never had a problem like this before & I almost always fill up with about 5.25-5.75 gallons. I now have 40K miles on it & another 7 months on the warranty, so, if it is the fuel pump, I assume it's covered. Any other ideas out there? I guess it could also be a clogged fuel filter? Thanks.
  2. Pretty simple question. Is the gas cap on a 2009 Royal Star Venture the SAME SIZE as a Royal Star Tour Deluxe gas cap...or any other Yamaha's that are the same size as the Venture. Thanks, Wally
  3. When I got to work last night I parked in the garage as normal. Several hours later I came in off the road and noticed the smell of gas. I look around my 2002 RSV and noticed a small wet spot under the left side. Well I thought it must have came from one of the overflow tubes. I decided to start her up. When I hit the start switch it turned over about three times and then just stopped!!! I hit the start switch a few more times and just got a thud. The third time I held it longer and it turned over and started shooting gas out the left side exhaust. It seem to run ok. Hope I make it home. Guess I should do an oil change in case some gas got purged passed the rings down into the crank case. Has anyone had this happen before?
  4. Have 2009 RSV with paint problems on the gas tank and fender. It is two toned red & black. It looks like you have rock chips in the paint, but paint was popping off from underneath on red only. Called Yahama to see if they were having a paint problem on the 09s of course they said no. They said to take it to the dealer that you bought it from. So I did. They said they would order me a new gas tank to replace the old one. Last Monday I got the new tank. Took them a day to get the new gas tank on. Now they have ordered the front fender. Don't know when it will get here. They didn't put the badges on the tank. I kind of like it without them. If you have any paint looking problems don't be surprised because it is popping off from underneath the paint. Especially on the newer bikes. Looked like it had the measels. LOL It looks good now. Hal
  5. ok maybe not glue but what do you use to repair cracks in the fairing and stuff? i have heard of plastic repair, pvc glue, plastic bond ect ect. i have a C shaped crack in my right side fairing where the lower the air tub goes in i think im right there? its the vent on the main part of the big side fairing that help? i dont want to have to remove the fairing and try to get to it from the inside. so can i just repair it from the out side? also is 40 mpg fair for the bike. i did find my poping its a exhaust leak down where on the right where it goes in to the collector main out side one not back one. the chrome shield is missing on that side and a little hole is in the pipe can this be welded?. i can live with it. right now. all in all with all the help i have gotten here. the bike is running well and comming along. and i did one thing i ran out of gas right in the yard but gauge showed one bar? hmmmm then parked it and nothing no bars? put it on reserve still no bar but fired up. so how much gas is in this sucker LOL i think ill just get a can and get some gas as nearest gas is 5 miles. thats what i get for playing and not paying attention.
  6. Several months after receiving my Carbtune, I finally took the time to sync my carbs. MAN what a difference. No more backfiring when letting of the gas and runs so much smoother!!! Freebird, thanks for the detailed write up!!
  7. I hate admitting to this but I need to get it fixed so here goes. Back this early summer I finally got a chance to get out and ride for three days. Weather forecast was good and I was pumped. I had been working so many hours and neglecting the bike that NOTHING was going to stand in my way of this ride. Well, I pulled the bike out the day before to wash it and get it packed. Turns out the battery was dead and it appeared it may be a battery tender issue. I jumped it and drove it for 30 minutes and it seemed to be fine. Got up the next morning and had to jump it and it started right up. Every time I tried to put it in gear it would die on me. After jumping it 3 times and it dying all 3 times I'm afraid to say I punched the gas tank. Just below the gas cap. Well my big mitts put a good dent in the tank and I can see some slight cracks in the paint. Needless to say I was ready to punch myself after this. I guess what I'm looking for can this dent be pulled out without going to a professional using a dent puller or am I pretty much screwed needing a professional? And yes, I did learn a lesson. Punch the wife next time instead. J/K.
  8. WATCH OUT when approaching gas pumps!!!!!! Somebody either spilled gas or oil....put my foot down and it just slid out from under me! Came SO close to laying it over. But....no donation this time!
  9. Hey, Any iPhone users out there? (I don't know how I got along without mine!) I have been using an app called Gas Cubby to keep track of my fuel use and service efforts this season. It can do multiple vehicles and is free, sponsored by Prestone. (There's a paid for verson too with extra fancy features but I wouldn't know about them cheapskate that I am) At the pump, it would probably be quicker to write in a log book like I used to do but when it comes time to crunch the numbers, man its all done for you and you can email it to yourself to print out etc. I like it a lot. Check it out, its pretty cool. Hope this is of interest. Brian H.
  10. Not much is Free anymore. All the local gas stations now charge $1.00 to use the air machine. What happened to 50 cents. I remember when using the air compressor was a free service. Sheetz where the wife works still has free air but not many left that do.Whats next a $1 fee on the Restroom door? I drove 12 miles to the closest gas station Saturday to gas up the truck. Everytime someone borrows my truck they bring it back empty. Anyway I took the airtank with me cause my air compressor was guarded heavy by Yellow Jackets and the tractor tire was low. I got pissed at the $1 fee for air and came back without it.The gas station also charges a $1 authorization fee just to swipe your credit card at the pump. I'm going to put a sign on the mailbox. Checks Free but bills and junk mail $1 please. I could have the phone company charge for incoming calls the wife is free, all others $1.00 except the Mother In Law $10.00:whistling:
  11. Me and a couple of buddies went out and rode for several hours yesterday, during the ride we discovered my brake light was stuck on (in a different thread) and while I had the lower fairings off the bike I opened up the holes in the filter covers to let it breathe easier (still has OEM style filters) Today I took the plugs out, cleaned them, checked the gap (.035) and did just general maintance. Then I put everything back on ensureing the plug wires went on correctly. When I started the bike back up it ran very smoothly (my bike has always had a lope to it) and it revs so much more freely... just like I thought it always should. So I take off on a short test ride and the bike pulls out just fine and as long as I ease into the throttle it runs better than ever. Now... when I crank the throttle in say 3rd it sputters, hesitates and eventually clears and takes off like a bat out of hell. If I'm just cruising in 5th and give it the fuel it just sputters and hesitates without taking off. I've been building cars and modifying cars for better than 20 years and I know what little I did to it shouldnt have caused this. The only other thing I did was to make sure the clams that hold the plemium to the tops of the carbs were tight... thats it!!! I filled up on my way home but its was at the same place I always get gas in all of my vehicals (shell station) so the possibility of water crossed my mind so I used a little gas dry and some SeaFoam in it and it has gotten just a tad better but it just amazes me how quickly this started. Any ideas???
  12. And that is an understatement............Was leaving to go to church on my V Star 1300, I cleaned it up a little bit before I left, got ready for church, backed the bike out of the garage, closed and locked the garage door, got back onthe bike pulled in clutch, dropped into first, a faint pop the bike lurched and dies. Clutch cable broke at the adjustment fitting under the tank. This is the second cable that has broken, the first one broke in the same place at 12,000 miles and Yamaha warrantied it.........no 10,000 miles later it does it again. Okay no biggey, I get the Venture out and put the Star away. Venture needs gas, so I stop at a gas station I use very rarely on my way to church. Pump the gas while sitting on the bike holding it upright so I get a full tank..............got distracted for a moment and all of a sudden I feel wettnes and hear liquiid spilling on the ground.........the auto shout off didnt work as it should now I have gas all over the tank cover the engine but worst of all, I am soaked in gas and it feels like someone lit a fire to big Jim and the twins......:crying:.......OUCH Wipe all the gas off the bike and soak up the little inside the filler area, and it feels like a volcano has gone off in my nether reigons.................Its a five mile ride back to the house and I dont know if I can make it without stopping at the first pond I see and jump in..........Call the fire department....................PLEASE. Get home and cant get the clothes off fast enuff, jump into a cold shower and cool my guys off....................WHEW......AAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Luckily no permanet damage done to the area, but it sure felt like I was going to be out of commisson for a while.............Didnt really want to go to the hospital and be treated for burns down there.................. Made it to church 45 minutes late, went on our lunch ride and had a really nice day that I thought was going to be shot for me............. So. How was your day................??
  13. I have a first gen 83xvz1200 if I pull off the fuel line at the carbs I can see fuel pumping out but thats it just by turning the key it happens. If I put a little gas in the carbs then start it it runs till the fuel i poured in burns off. If I pour gas in carbs and leave the fuel line off while the engine burns off the fuel I poured I don't see any fuel coming out the fuel line from the fuel pump. Have no idea what to do. Seems it's not getting fuel somehow!! Thanks, Chop
  14. Well this morning, on the way to work, I was passing a gas station that is right before the entrance to the highway (I-25) The exit to the gas station exits, pretty much, right into the SB exit lane and then you go over the overpass for the NB entrance. I take the NB entrance. There's lots of construction in this location right now so it's even more of a mess than usual. So I usually am a bit more cautious and go a bit slower in this area anyhow. Anywho... I'm tooling along and I see this guy on a bike sitting facing the way I'm headed, back to me, getting ready to leave the gas station. He wasn't at the pumps, kind of on the outskirts of the parking lot. My first thought is, I wonder if he's going to just buzz right onto the road, I'm traveling on, without stopping or looking. Keep in mind this is really, really early in the morning, like 1:15 am so, in his defense there aren't a boat load of cars out at this time of the morning. So I back off of the throttle a little more in anticipation of a possible bonehead move. My suspicions were realized when he just takes off, doesn't slow down or even look and pulls out right in front of me. Man I wish I could have found the horn button faster, but I did get in a good toot to let him know he should stop and look. Moral: It isn't only cagers that pull bonehead moves that can get you hurt!!
  15. I bought an 83 with 26K miles on it back in May. It ran great for the first 1,000 miles then started missing and gas milage dropped from 38-40 to 23-26. Local dealer messed with it some but I wouldn't let them experiment on it, based on previous experience(!) with them. Ran a bunch of yamaha carb cleaner in it and it ran worse, ran some Sea Foam and it ran worse yet. Based on the exhaust I surmised it was running way to rich so I took the top off the air cleaner box and it runs better than ever! (with a lot of intake noise) It is of course running lean at times and hesitates a bit because of it but gas mileage is back and it doesn't miss & cutout. Now, I'm sure I've isolated the issue but I've no idea what to do next. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  16. I want to know what you guys think... So, I drive 500 miles/week with my work commute. Unfortunately, I'm still driving my cage while I re-build my '83 from my accident of a couple of months ago. Bummer - working on it every Saturday for 12+ hours each time. Anywho, For the past 4 months commuting in my cage, I've bought gas at one chevron station, and I try to get it at the same pump, and fill it the same way each time. I have consistently gotten 32mpg in my little Subaru Justy. Very consistent - rebuilt my Justy this past winter so everything is new. Last week, something was screwey with their credit card system - I pay at the pump at 4 to 5 in the morning - and I swiped my card 3 times, pre-approving 3 separate, $75 gas purchases (I didn't know it pre-approved for this much each time), but the pump said to see the cashier - too early, they weren't open. So, my wife calls me mid-morning at work freaking out because the Visa credit card fraud people are calling wanting personal info to verify that she is who she says she is so they can verify charges. She hangs up on them because she won't give personal info out over the phone & thinks maybe I'm spending money I don't have like crazy. So, I had gone to Maverick to get gas that morning after failing to get gas at Chevron, & since then - 3 times total. My gas mileage is 30 mpg EACH TIME at maverick all of a sudden. I just did some figuring & comparing of 5 Chevron fill-ups at about $2.94 ish/gallon, and the 3 Maverick fill-ups at $2.89ish/gallon. I've payed the same per fill-up per number of miles driven at both Maverick & Chevron (Wow, how did that happen? the Maverick gas is less per gallon!), but the Maverick fill-ups consistently say I filled up with more gas per miles driven than the Chevron fill-ups! This doesn't add up! nothing has changed except for where I'm getting gas, & I think that Maverick must be doing something fishy with their pumps. Doug
  17. Ok, before I decided to fix my original tank, I took RandyR up on his offer to sell a gas tank to me. only caveat is that it is a black tank. I just set it on the frame and took some pics, I kind of like it. opinions anyone?? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ solution B is that Jus Monkeying Around member was a big factor in fixing my original tank and that I should have it painted. He offered to pick up supplies and help me do the repair. Well at the Houston Maint Day, we did just that. We fixed the hole and another Hal is going to paint it. I will post that later as it comes along.
  18. Hola, I ride a 2008 RSTD it has between 11 and 12k on it. The only thing I have done is replace the stock air filters with K&N's. I hit reserve at about 140. I figured my gas milage on 135 leaving a bit of fudge room incase I need a gas station. I figured I am getting 32.5 mpg. I am doing a 4K roung trip this summer and trying to figure costs. I ride 80 miles a day round trip to work and 98% of the ride is highway miles. Anyone getting better mileage and if so what have you done to increase it of have you done anything? Thanks In advance SJ
  19. the pics are not so good, but i hope you get the general idea. ok, so i go to the shop to prep my scooter to make texas maint day coming saturday. I pull off the cover and find a chip coming off the tank and a big stain on the paint. I check for leaking brake fluid, it's clean and dry - so ruled that out. I checked my cover and nothing there. I rub my finger over it and it smears a bit and smells like gas what the heck????? I think to myself. then it dawns on me - i knew from the purchase that the bike was a salvage title. the seller, of course, makes it sound like a fall over, then totaled by INS company. the leak has to be coming from the inside. oh, good grief charlie brown. what next. I drain the tank into a gas can, then i start by pulling away the chip to find body filler. the body filler is, of course, soft and easy to cut off. I find the hole that was ground, repaired, ground and then filled, smoothed and painted. now i have this mess to contend with because who ever did the repair, did not do it for longevity sake. that is my opinion cause it is now my mess. I don't do body work much less gas tank repair. I assume a repair is gonna b much cheaper than a replacement tank. Does anyone here do gas tank repair. Maybe I can get lucky and someone within driving distance ( 8 hours or so) does and wants to take my job after giving me a quote - so what do ya'll think
  20. Since they appear more aerodynamic, do the 1st Generations get better gas mileage than the 2nd Generations?
  21. 2008 RSTD Question I let bike sit for 5-6 weeks and when I got home and fired it up after turning the gas back on (I think it was off ) it fired up first time and it seem to run only on 2 cyc. and no power. Could it be cause I left it on the side stand and gas drained into the cyclinder? Now after a mile or 2 runing it and blowing it out it seems to be fine and no missing or bogging down or anything. What do you all think. Joe star4772 :confused24:
  22. I have a first gen and it won't stay running. If I put a few drops of gas in carbs and it will burn that off and wont stay running. I have ordered a fuel pump off ebay. It's like the fuel is getting cut off before it reaches the carbs. I pulled the fuel line off at the carb and turned the key and fuel is pumping but when it starts it quickly dies after the drops pf gas that i put in carbs burns off. uggg very fustrated
  23. Anybody here have experience with wire welders? I am currently looking for a welder to use around our place. I just want something to use now and then for light duty repairs. I do want a welder that uses 115 volt. I see that you can buy welders that use flux core wire and they say no need for gas. Then others use gas. I don;t know enough about these to know which is best. Of course then you have the stick welders and I guess that is a whole different type. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  24. Jeff; So not to take away from your headlight thread I started this one for the Aux Gas Tank. NO NO the rear end; as in Frame work doesn't have to come off just the tour pac and body & running boards if you have them. The rear end ( pumpkin ) it self may have to be lowered ( basically removed, and sit down with axles still attached like putting in the drive shaft ) to do the welding there, but maybe not too. That could be done with asbestos blankets laid across the rear end. As simple as it looks it was done in a sort of complicated way. Meaning for an installer, it has to come off before the kit can be installed, and they supper locktited the mounts to the tank side, and you have to bend the rubber stand offs to the point of breaking loose to get the tank out of the frame to put the kit on the bike, and then go through it again to install the tank. I was able to break loose the stand offs, and eliminate 90% of that part. I think that there has been a retro fit of a couple from this board if I remember right, but haven't heard too much about it. This board is a little slow with activity compared to other boards, but the Quality of the threads makes up for that.
  25. I'm currently in Albuquerque and after riding 1425 miles with 3 other bikes my bike's gas mileage sucks. I'm riding with a Harley Heritage Classic, a Goldwing, and a 2007 Tour Deluxe. Using a speedohealer calibrated speedometer/odometer I have only achieved more than 30 mpg on two tanks of gas. Most are in the 26 to 27 range with one as low as 24. The tour deluxe is doing slightly better. We've been hitting reserve at about 120 miles. Whenever I put in 4.3 gallons the Tour deluxe uses 3.9 and the wing about 3.3. The Harley is usually pretty close to the wing. We've been running a pretty consistent 70 mph with cruise control. The two tanks that were above 30 mpg were in a slower part of the ride. The bike runs fine and the carbs were recently synched. Is anyone else seeing this kind of mileage and what should I check when I get home. I could have driven the car and used less gas. Dennis
