  1. Just wanted to let everyone know about Ivans jet kits available online installed in my venture-actually uses smaller main jets and finally got my carbs synced right and it has more power and is smoother
  2. Finished up the 87 last Friday and got her back on the road. She seemed to be running fine but I didn't get a chance to put some miles on her until Tuesday. So, Tuesday I rode up to Dahlonega to visir RandyR and do a carb sync. On the ride up she was running great, with great acceration and no sign of the 4200rpm stumble that she had been having. But, she is still sucking gas at 28MPG (1up averageing 70mph on interstate). :doh:When we hooked the carb tune up #3 was pegging and the others were fairly close. We did the carb sync and I headed back towing my trailer. The ride back got about the same mileage (1up towing trailer averging about 60MPH and about 30 miles of stop start in traffic) I had really hoped that finding and correcting the loose main jet tube on #4 and new main jet tube orings on all four would have corrected the MPG problem but it didn't. I did notice some black soot at the exhaust tips. I'm now thinking one or more weak or faulty coils. I'm about to go out and pull the plugs to read the fuel burn conditions. I'll post pictures of the results as soon as I do. All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
  3. Hey everyone, just got my 1999 Royal Star Venture last week and the cruise does not seem to work at all. A couple of things I have discovered, please let me know if I am wrong. The main switch after being depressed to the "ON" position should spring back to the centered position??..Mine does not. Same with going to the "Off" position. It will stay in either of those positions and not spring back to a centered position. Secondly, when I turn the main switch to on, the "ON" light comes on and so does the "SET" light without touching anything else. Shouldn't that light only come on after depress the "SET/ACCEL" button? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!! Dan
  4. I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I would like to add my thoughts (feel free to correct me). My bike idles great and runs great through the entire range, but just off idle--it goes lean and backfires slightly (this seems common). I decided to richen-up the "pilot screws". I agree with several of the other members who err on the rich side (milage will not be affected much). The "pilot screws" adjust the idle mixture. The Main jet size controls the main circuit mixture. What I usually do on a muscle car is adjust the screws until the highest vacuum reading is attained. What I found with my bike is that No amount of adjustment made any difference at all! That tells me that the entire "idle Circuit" is plugged or otherwise non-functional. The reason the bike idles fine is because the throttles are probably opened-up enough to draw from the main circuit. It's time for a chemical dip.
  5. I found out something very interesting today. My 2005 Ford Escape died on the side of the road. (Yes I know what FORD stands for!) It seemed like it was being starved for fuel..but I checked and the pump and the filter were just fine. So I had it towed to the dealer. It seems the platinum plugs that are supposed to be good for over 100,000 km (60,000 miles) are NOT! In fact...what happens is as the plug wears, the gap increases. This causes the coils (one for each plug) to work harder which in turn causes radio frequency interference which fries the main computer. So...my dead truck cost me -6 new plugs at $8 each. -6 new coils at almost $100 each:mo money: Plus the new PCM or TCI or whatever they call the main computer a$1,125 (or if could try and find a used one at $750) To change the rear plugs and coils they have to remove part of the intake manifold so lots of labor and a gasket to boot. Total cost of the repair? $2,550.00:mo money: All because of worn out plugs. (my truck only has 90,000 km) The mechanic is the son of a family friend, and he suggested the main computer might not be fried....that I should change coils and plugs and try it. He said the bad parts could cause the computer to show as bad also. I might get lucky...but then again this is ME we are talking about. :mo money:I got it towed home and will try to do it myself.... Did I mention $2500????:crying: So there goes the international, :smile5:Friday the 13th, some safety chrome and a few other things like food and utilities for the next few months.
  6. Yooper just got done with 10 hour job doing the forks, now me and Mom were for a ride today visiting and i lost all elctric except the head light and four ways no monitor no nothing.Checkde the main fuse and all others i was thinking maybe i overlooked something, need advice like to ride tomorrow. Thanks, Yooper
  7. I figured I'd post here as I'm sure someone has the experience to guide me. For the last 2 days I have been getting a pungent sewer gas smell from a cabinet in my kitchen. This cabinet is not under the sink, but it is against the wall where I believe the main vent runs. It has been raining pretty bad for 2 or 3 days as well. I noticed a few things: 1 The smell (not as strong) is present in the cabinets of all bathroom sinks 2. I don't smell anything from the drain openings 3. The smell was almost gone then the wife ran the dishwasher & it got bad again! Am I correct in assuming that there must be a clog in a vent pipe? All the drains flow quickly. Could there be a clog at the main sewer trap outside the house which could cause the smell? I have never had this issue in the 5 years we've lived here. The house was built in 1993 so I know all the fixtures have P-traps and no modifications to the plumbing have been made. It is on a slab foundation. My plan is to go to the roof & snake the vents (& run some water in them) to see if it clears this out. Should I open & check the sewer main trap outside, or is that not needed since all the drains flow quickly? And to think I thought the gas smell from my gen one was annoying:bang head:
  8. I recently had my carbs apart on my 83 VR to replace the rubber plugs, gas mileage was horrible. I was looking at the main jets and they have 125 marked on them. Just for fun I looked at a parts diagram on line and it said the main should be 117.5. Which one is right? My bike has stock exhaust and intake with no modifications. When I got the bike a few years ago from the original owner he said the carbs had never been worked on. I have no reason to doubt him since it had the original screws that still looked new. Several of them were tamper resistant kind. So I can assume it came with 125 mains. Should I try the 117.5 or stay with the 125?
  9. Could someone let me know if the two rubber plugs at the bottom of the main jet body inside the flote cover need to be tight. I have the carbs of for cleaning and both plugs are loose, not sure if this is ok or not, if not where would i get new ones. Thanks Dave
  10. So I've ruled out a 20 kw generator for I can do what I want with a 10 kw portable generator. I found a TriPower generator that has 3 independent fuel system (gas/propane/natural gas). I just spoke to a sales rep and he described the switching process from one fuel system to the other. One does not need to purchase any additonal generator accessory to do this. I currently have a 500 gal propane tank to just heat my home including hot water tank. It would be nice to have both source of fuel (Gas & Propane) I hope to purchase one before this coming fall. http://www.unitedgenerator.com/proddetail.php?prod=HPS12000HE So my general plan is to move all the 30/40/50 breakers from my main panel to a sub panel and feed the sub panel with say a 125 amp breaker from the main panel with a transfer box. Then move all my 15/20 amp breakers to a sub panel and feed it with a 100 amp breaker from the main panel with a transfer box. With power management I would think that I could power all my power needs during an emergency. Opinions welcome.
  11. I've been thinking about installing a large Home backup Generators one of these years. Probably 20 KW or larger. Anyone have one or have installed one. Like to get myself educated on the pros and cons, also open to suggestions if there might be a better idea. I currently have two propane furnaces (1 for main floor and one for basement apt -rental) and a propane hot water tank all supplied by a 500 gal propane tank. When I upgrade appliances I would consider going to propane ranges and dryers. Need enough power for the following: Main floor home Basement Apt (Complete Set of appliance) Hot Tub Heat Pump(Heat and Air Conditioner) Detached garage/shop (No Welder just normal electricity needs)
  12. I hate to ask this question, but what is the order of my cylinders on a 04 RSV. I'm working on the carburetors and want to make sure the main jets are in the right location. I have found post explaining the main jets are different, but they refer to cylinder 1, 2, 3, 4. Which cylinder is 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. I have been searching and can't find the answer, so I thought I would ask. Thanks.
  13. i am going to replace the old "glass fuse" block with spade type fuses. my question is "are all circuits energized by one main positive wire, or are there different power inputs from other circuits, that energize a certain fuse"? just jt:confused24:
  14. Leaving for Daytona soon. About 10:30. Ill be at the speedway about 1 pm. JRichard should be there as well. Maybe some lunch at US-1 restaurant in S. Daytona then over to the mess on Main St. Cant believe im up this early.....
  15. I've got one for you electrically inclined. My cousin's 07 RSV ( with 7000 miles on it) would not start. Let me give you the symptoms. When he turned the key on, the lights came on, the speedometer, gas gauge, everything came up and was doing its thing like its supposed to. When he hit the start button, everything goes dead. Well, he thought it was the 30 amp main fuse cause everything went dead. He pulled the fuse, installed another one and it cranked right up. Okay, this happened a couple of more times, so he ohmed the fuse and it was okay. So, it hadn't been blowing the fuse, the fuse is good, but the only way he can get it to start is pull the main fuse, like its resetting something, put the fuse back in, and then it will start. Its still under warranty and he's going to try to get it into the dealer next week, but I thought I'd run it by you all and see what ya thought. When he takes it to the dealer, I'll let everyone know what they find out. Thanks, Glenn
  16. 2001 RSV with 55k miles. Went to start my bike and didn't wait for the 'clicking' fuel pump? to stop before I pressed the starter button. I quickly let off of the starter switch - the bike didn't have enough time to start but did briefly crank. I then set the ignition switch to off, then on, and no power at all; no fuel pump noise, no lights, no radio, nothing. Same thing after numerous attempts. What I have done: All fuses including the main checked and ok. Even replaced some including main. Battery terminals clean and wires secure. Battery checked and voltage is fine. Wires clean and secure to the starter relay. Replaced the ignition main switch with a new one because it was showing signs wear. Still no power when the ignition switch is set to on or acc. What else should I check?
  17. Jrichard rolled up yesterday and spent the night after helping me but the bike back together (new tire). Even had a scary and embarrassing moment when we thought a needle injector for the grease gun snapped off while shooting some Moly 60 into the rear wheel bearings. After carefully prying off the rubber seal and poking through the bearing assembly looking for the needle we discovered that the needle didnt break off, only pushed back into the grease gun. Ok, I was the guilty party...so shoot me. But it was a relief that it didnt fall into the bearing basket. Got the wheel up, put the stock mufflers back on. The open HD muffs were beginning to drive me crazy. Took the bike for a ride and with the stock muffs it sure felt more responsive. Also dumped some star tron gas treatment in and mileage increased by 25 milles on the tank. Got up this Am and we all (J, Jean and myself) headed down to Daytona, riding A1A down to hook up with Coach and his wife from Ohio (Ron and Linda Wise) and their friends from NY, George and Jacki on a HD trike. We headed to US-1 Restaurant (formerly the Sly Fox) for some good eats and some good reminiscing then headed out for different venues. J and I headed to Main Street which was filling up. We parked and started walking down Main St when we saw an RSV. I asked who owned it and whether he was a member here and he looked at me funny and said he remembered me from when I synced his carbs. It was Mainiac. Small world. Gave a card to another RSV rider so maybe he will check out the site. We strolled around a little then J went off to parts unknown and we headed home, back up A1A. Stopped in Flagler Beack for some Working Cow ice cream and enjoyed the ocean view and perfect 80 temps. Couldnt have asked for a nicer day.....too bad, back to work tomorrow.....
  18. ok maybe not glue but what do you use to repair cracks in the fairing and stuff? i have heard of plastic repair, pvc glue, plastic bond ect ect. i have a C shaped crack in my right side fairing where the lower the air tub goes in i think im right there? its the vent on the main part of the big side fairing that help? i dont want to have to remove the fairing and try to get to it from the inside. so can i just repair it from the out side? also is 40 mpg fair for the bike. i did find my poping its a exhaust leak down where on the right where it goes in to the collector main out side one not back one. the chrome shield is missing on that side and a little hole is in the pipe can this be welded?. i can live with it. right now. all in all with all the help i have gotten here. the bike is running well and comming along. and i did one thing i ran out of gas right in the yard but gauge showed one bar? hmmmm then parked it and nothing no bars? put it on reserve still no bar but fired up. so how much gas is in this sucker LOL i think ill just get a can and get some gas as nearest gas is 5 miles. thats what i get for playing and not paying attention.
  19. Just went to the Sturgis Cam to take a look at the aftermath of last week. The cam focuses on the downtown area, main st. I guess. The one thing that really stuck out were all of the "oil spots" all down the middle of the road where the "you know what kind of bikes" were all parked.........just sayin:rotf::stickpoke:
  20. I have a 08 venture & would like to put a reciver type hitch on it. do all hitches for a venture lust bolt on with the 4 boults in the back or is there some other bracing that goes up to the main frame? If all I need is the frame across the back I cam make that! for now I would just like a rack on the back for more storage on long trips. trailer later?
  21. When I removed my front wheel all I needed to do was loosen the main axle bolt and remove the calipers. I mounted the new tire and put the wheel back on then torqued the bolt to 58lbs. I read on a forum about an axle clamp bolt - is there a bolt I need to tighten to secure the main axle bolt?
  22. anyone with advice on how to remove the main switch on a 08 venture for replacement key to be made? i dont see any quick and painless diagram in the manual that relates directly with this.
  23. i am trying to get a pinstriper to be at the 09 rally for a couple of days. is there anyone who is attending that would want to get some striping done on their bike. also anyone want to get a tattoo while they are there. if so i may pursue that. the main thing is the striper. i would like to get some on my wing. bill
  24. It's been a couple years since I removed the bodywork on my 87 VR and I'm just now putting the bike together. I wish I had taken photos while taking it apart but I didn't. I did bag and tag the nuts, bolts etc. In the bags for the body, front upper pieces (main faring pieces) I have one spring for each side. I don't remember where these go and I don't see the springs on the faring exploded parts view. Can anyone tell me where they should go? Thanks, Ron
