  1. Considering converting my portable generator to propane. Has a Honda 13HP GX390 engine. I have googled this and found some different kits. Anyone here have any experience or input with doing this? Thanks RSTDdog
  2. My daughter just called. She's at the house her and her girlfriend share. Their furnace is apparently not heating. She said they just had the propane tank filled yesterday and it seemed to be working last night. Tank is on and showing pressure. I was trying to walk her through checking and relighting the furnace. It's an Arcoaire Deluxe 2 stage Model NTP605. I had her check for stickers on the panels for relighting directions and all they could find was one that said "Autostart", no relighting info at all. I'm not even familiar with propane furnaces so I'm gonna ask.......what the hell? Any suggestions as to what I can do from here to get them fired up? Mike
  3. I've been thinking about installing a large Home backup Generators one of these years. Probably 20 KW or larger. Anyone have one or have installed one. Like to get myself educated on the pros and cons, also open to suggestions if there might be a better idea. I currently have two propane furnaces (1 for main floor and one for basement apt -rental) and a propane hot water tank all supplied by a 500 gal propane tank. When I upgrade appliances I would consider going to propane ranges and dryers. Need enough power for the following: Main floor home Basement Apt (Complete Set of appliance) Hot Tub Heat Pump(Heat and Air Conditioner) Detached garage/shop (No Welder just normal electricity needs)
  4. At the end of last Summer there I was, scratching my head in disbelief, unable to decide whether I should laugh or be disappointed... Rewind 30 minutes... I'm puttin' along, mowing roughly 2-3 acres with my Father In Law's trusty John Deere tractor, and 72" finish mower when Crystal volunteered to use the electric Weedeater while I was mowing. "Great! Let me show you how to use it..." "Pull trigger, it cuts, keep it kinda level, make passes, and if the string gets short, give it a little 'bop' on the ground, and more will come out." Fast forward, to the beginning- still scratching my head.... Having parked the tractor, and being done with the mowing, I decide to go commandeer the weedeater, 'cause I knew if *I* hated using it, she'd hate it more... On my way walking toward the house, I keep seeing little pieces of yellow and green plastic, and I start to worry, because chances are I ran over one of the kids' toys again... Nope. I approach Crystal, who is staring at the head of the weedeater, frustrated beyond belief that the F***ing string won't come out! That's when I notice, the entire guard for the weedeater is obliterated. When 'bopping' it didn't work, it turned to 'whomping' and proceeded to 'whacking' and 'smashing.' There was a handle with a trigger, and the spinning head. That's all that was left of the weedeater. Sure enough, I tell her "Oh, it must have jammed, these things happen..." and I send her in the house to go about her business. I pull the trigger, give it a tap, and continue weedeating, as my shins are being destroyed by debris, even through my jeans. SO- Here's the real meat of my post... Needing a new weedeater, we head to Sears and come across Excalibur of Weedeaters! It's a propane powered trimmer, with interchangeable heads, yadda yadda yadda... It uses the small camping sized propane bottles, which last around 2 hours at full throttle. (Which as you may know, the small bottles can be refilled by your 15lb propane tank from your grill with an adapter from Harbor Freight) No mixing gas, no priming bulbs, no 50+ pulls to start. I had it assembled in 10 minutes, and started in 30 seconds! The only maintenance is changing the oil, and spark plug once in a while... Literally. That's it. I love this thing! It set us back about $160 for the 'bigger' one which I think weighs around 14lbs, and comes with a shoulder strap. Available in straight shaft, or curved. I opted for the curved. Just had to share the joy of my new weedeater, since I was just reminded that I have to use it tomorrow.
  5. Does anyone use an electric heater to keep the chill off their garage when you want to work? Just curious what some of you may use. I used a propane heater several times last year however I didn't really care for the odor of the propane burning mixing with the other chemicals in the garage. Thanks. Spotsy
  6. OK....I know that we have discussed various options for heating our homes but I have another question. Have any of you swapped from propane to electric heat? I know that at first, it seems like a dumb question but I've been doing some research on it and it's not so dumb as it may seem. There is a breaking point with the price of propane and the price of electricity where electricity becomes cheaper and I'm thinking I have passed that point. From what I have learned, when propane reaches $2.48 per gallon and if you are paying no more than .10 cents per KWH for electricity, then electricity becomes cheaper. I am now paying $2.50 per gallon for propane and my electricity is .07 cents per KWH so according to what I THINK I have learned, I would be better off switching to electricity. Any experts here who can show me where I've made a mistake?
  7. This was sent out to us from our safety department and I thought it was worth passing along. I just cannot believe what risks people are taking now to pursue thier love of this drug. Subject: Propane Tanks For those of you who like to grill it up during the summer, here's a safety annoucement you should be aware of. Please put this information out to ALL personnel. For those of you who exchange your propane tanks, this is something you definitely need to be aware of, especially in light of the recent news of 'Meth-labs' in our area. Meth cooks are getting propane tanks from exchanges at Wal-Mart, Kroger, etc. and emptying them of the propane. Then, they are filling them with anhydrous ammonia (which they now have a recipe for by the way). After they are finished with them, they return them to the store. They are then refilled with propane and sent back for you and me to buy. Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and weakens the structure of the tank. It can be very dangerous when mixed with propane and hooked up to our grills, etc. You should inspect the propane tank for any blue or greenish residue around the valve areas. If it is present, refuse to purchase that tank. Check out the following website for more details. They also have pictures. http://www.npga.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=529
  8. I have been exploring home heating options and have just about decided that there is no good solution. I cannot get natural gas here and propane has gotten expensive. I looked into Geothermal and had a heating contractor come out but it just doesn't make sense for me. He says that my furnace is already very energy efficient so my savings would be minimal. I already have a heat pump but the system switches to propane somewhere around 35F. So...there are just not a lot of good options. Was wondering if anybody has experience with or know somebody who is using Infrared heating? The system here looks interesting but there are no prices. I'm sure they are very expensive. http://www.redwell.us/index.php
