Maybe it picked up some bad habits while in Sturgis??? Careful, next thing you know it will start shedding parts...

Plus side, as mentioned above. Minus side, takes up space...

Yup!! I know EXACTLY how you feel!!!

Nothing wrong with the plug Jeff! I installed both R/R's and compared voltage with the choke on twice to make absolutely sure. Also experimented with driving lights on and off to see which R/R got dragged down worse. That aftermarket R/R now resides in the circular file...

OK I own both so I havwe the right to comment on both! As far as performance and handling, the 1st gens are far superior, but as far as comfort the 2nd gen is far supeerior. The 1st gen is a tall bike that handles like a sports bike where as the 2nd gen is a wide feeling bike and extremely top heavy. You already own a RSTD, it is virtually the same bike with a different fairing and a tour pack. 1st gens are older bikes and need routine maintenance but for the most part would not bat an eyelash at taking them across the country. 2nd gens are a little more reliable unless you get one of the early ones, then you are dealing with an aged bike. In some ways the 2nd gens were cheapened down from the 1st gens like in the front shocks not being equalized air wise like the 1st gens, and no onboard compressor or monitor for the air suspension. There is no dampener adjustment on the rear shock, and there are a few other things like that. Bottom line, if myou are mechanically inclined and enjoy working on bikes get a 1st gen and save a pile of money. If all you care about is getting on and riding in comfort get a 2nd ghen, as mentioned an '08 or newer for the 5 year unlimited miles warranty...

No, I'm looking for a plug and play unit if possible. I too have an extra one of those replacement ones that has the 2 connectors on it, bought 2 of them, one for Goldie and the other for the '85 that I gave away a month ago. I was considering it but really don't want to bucher up my wiring quite yet. Thanks for the offer Carl...

OK after fnding out my supposed better than stock R/R is worse than the stock one, only putting out 13.7V instead of the 14.0 from the stock one, and discovering the aftermarket one gets dragged down worse than the stock one, I have decided to do some research. Did a msearch here but no mention of any aftermarket R/R's!! Sooo, who knows of a good heavy duty voltage regulator for a 2nd Gen?? No, I do not know what brand aftermarket one I installed, I bought it along with the high output stator from Buckeye a couple of years ago but just got around to installing it this spring. It's in the trash right now...

tape deck does not engage

My guess would be the auto reverse is continually going thinking the tape has reached the end due to the tape itself physically not moving... -

They are probably stretched out. With the case off, plug it in and insert a tape and see of the belts move at all, chances are they don't... -
You were in the area and didn't say hi to the WNY crew?????

A few years ago there was a basd lot of Metzlers and they cast off large hunks of rubber that have resulted in blowouts and even serious injury from crashes due to the blowouts. Their quality has improved and now this has not been an issue but people are still leary of them. To add fuel to the fire, therre was a rash of poor wearing Avons a year or too ago as well! Myself I'm sold on the Dunlop E3's as they wear like iron and have always been reliable...

Glad to hear you are fixed, again!!!

OK you will probably want to "bake' your TCI. Remove it from the bike and pop the cover off. Drain any excess water from inside the case then pop it in the oven at 250 degrees for about an hour. When done remount the TCI on top of the airbox where it is more protected. You may have to break one of the mounting ears off to make it fit. The cables will reach. You may want to consider unsoldering the edge connectors and inspect the circuit board for any signs of corrosion and clean as necessary. There are also some diodes in there if you know what they are that can be replaced with better diodes from the 1N100(X) family. The stock diodes weaken with age, the 1N1001 etc diodes are stronger...
