  1. After getting putrid miles out of the Brickstones that the bike came with, and then slightly better out a set of Pirelli Rt66's, I then went with ME 880's. I now have 15K miles on them, and have been totally happy with them. The rear tire is right at ready to be replaced, but I swear there's another few thousand left in the front. Having said that, my question is, why do I see a fairly large number of folks bashing the Metzler ME880's, and instead recommending tires like Avon Venom, Dunlop E3's, and Michelin Commander II's? The reason I want to know is, if I'm fixin to buy knew tires before the 2 week trip we are taking in September, then I need to know why these other tires are so much better than the Metzler's. I might consider them if they are way better. It's not like the Metzler's we currently have are doing light duty either. Besides the weight of the bike, I'm a pretty good sized fella too (6'6" 300lbs), and my wife adds a bit at 130lbs. Just wondering.
  2. I have an 09 Venture S I would like to run the Metzler 170 in the rear has anyone had experience with this? Thanks, Vince
  3. It is time to replace my rear tire. AS I have been looking around and planning to purchase a Metzler, I noticed there is a "stage 1" upgrade for RSV that changes the size of the tire to a Metzler 180/70hr-15. It states this goes on the same rim..... Is this true? Has anyone actually done this?? If you have done this does it make any difference good or bad? Any input would be greatly appreciated here as the tire needs to be replaced very soon. Thanks JM
  4. I have been cruising the BMW forums and notice they swear by the Metzler 880 for the K1200LT touring bike. Oh yeah they complain about the same stuff we do...like top heavy, slow speed handling and a whole other set of problems I know there is several members here that has not had good luck with the Metzler 880 on the 2nd Gen Venture. Seems they have a tendency to chunk rubber off at some point. Some members here love them and would not use nothing else even when they hear of others problems. I am kinda scared of them since more than one of our members report the chunking problem. I always thought maybe it was the weight of the bike causing some of this problem...but the BMWK1200LT is not that much different from the Venture. Running weight of the BMW is 853lbs. RSV 869lbs Is it the horsepower...Venture about 98hp-BWM 116hp. Why is it the BWM folks never seem to have problems with this tire? Any ideas? Also my son's 2010 Raider (730lb bike) has a set of Metzler 880 on from the factory...and in the owners manual they strickly recommend nothing but this tire. 120/70-21 210/40-18 Metzler 880. By the way...that 113 ci Raider is one of the most uncomfortable bikes I have ever riden...feet and arms out front...back bent over, you would never touch a back rest if you installed one...you look like a C riding it. But it will get up and go...but I do not think there is a chance it will out run BLACK BETTY even if it is BLACK, the fastest color of them all. I tell you what...that new BMW K1600GTL sound like it is gonna be something to consider. 160 HP in line 6 cylinder with 129lb/ft torque...heck who knows...you might even be able to see the engine on it... Spy photo...of what is supposed to be it.. Yamaha better tighten thier A$$ up...I just hope it comes in BLACK when it hits the street. Looks like a FJR with a Big tour pack on it. Probably runs like or better than a FJR. http://www.cycleworld.com/var/ezflow_site/storage/images/motorcycle_news/future_bikes_spy_shots/10q3/bmw_k1600gt_and_gtl_-_future_bikes_spy_shots/3472375-1-eng-US/bmw_k1600gt_and_gtl_-_future_bikes_spy_shots_image_575_346.jpg http://www.cycleworld.com/motorcycle_news/future_bikes_spy_shots/10q3/bmw_k1600gt_and_gtl_-_future_bikes_spy_shots
  5. I would like to get a quick poll on the Metzler M880 and the Avon Venom. I have narrowed my choices to these tires and would like to get a count of how many use each. I know everyone has a favorite for different reasons, but since lots of you have used either one or both of these I would get some numbers on which you prefer. If you are interested in helping me make a decision and simple M or A would be great in your response. If you would also like to say the mileage you have gotten from the tire you selected that would also be helpful. Please just note whether it was a front or a rear. Thanks for all the info so far and everyone's help... JM:bagpipes-emoticon:
  6. just looking for the recommended pressure for: front Dunlop Elite II rear Metzler 880 Thanks!
  7. I've had it with the m/c tires . Am getting a Kumho for the rear and could use some advice on mounting it. I do not have a mounting machine and probably not the correct tools. My Metzler is missing a chunk. Sure wish I had a lift. If anyone near Dallas can help it would be appreciated.
  8. Many of you may remember my story from New Mexico on the way home from Sturgis titled "May Pop Metzler in New Mexico". In that story I was forced to mount a Dunlop Harley Davidson used rear tire in Tucumcari, New Mexico to replace a fairly new Metzler that sudden showed thread all the way around the tire on a long lonely New Mexico highway. Well that was last August and about ten thousand miles ago, when I was fortunate enough to find a used tire with some tread on it that was the only fitting motorcycle tire within hundreds of miles of my location. Back then in New Mexico I paid $20 for the used tire and $6 to have it mounted and ballanced on the wheel. I had to remove and reinstall the wheel. Yesterday I removed the wheel again to replace that tire because once again I have thread showing. I got all the goody out of this tire too (10,000 miles). I'm amazed how much Goody, In fact I got more mileage out of that used HD Dunlap then I've ever gotten out of any new tire I ever purchased except the free front Metzler I'm still running that I got in Daytona 2008 (12,000 miles). $26.00= 10,000 miles rear tire life. Not bad
  9. I have an 07 Venture that is Blue / Black. It is ready for tires and I am thinking about putting Wide Whitewalls on her. Do any of you have them on your Venture, (preferably same colors) and could post a pic or two? This way I can see how mine would look ahead of time. I am familiar with Metzler from my last Kaw 1500 Classic, but other than those I'm not sure which to choose. My dealer tells me that Metzler doesnt make them for the Venture in Whitewalls. So I thought would search a couple of forums to see which is most liked. craigr
  10. Bought a rear metzler for my 2005 tour deluxe in march of 07. 15 mos. and 10,000 miles later I have found a split between the tread. I had reservations about buying a metzler because of the comments I had read on this forum about it. I figured I would go ahead and buy one anyway knowing that I would always keep it at the metzler recommended tire press.(46-48 two up). What a piece of s... tire. I should have listened to you guys. Oh well I always learn things the hard way Leaving on a 2 week west coast trip sept.7th. glad it happened now!
  11. does anyone here know if you can put a 150/80-16 tire onthe rear of a first gen?? or a 120/70-18 on the front??? these are metzler ME880 tires.. does any body know how these handle , does this lower the bike at all... thanks..:smile11:
  12. Question is - Is it ok to mix tire brands? Not sure why I'm questioning this, but I thought I saw a post somewhere that it was a bad idea. Just bought my bike in December and the dealer I bought from put a new tire on the rear at my insistence, but I had no choice in what it was, and he put on the Metzler ME 880. Been reading all the good stuff here about Avon and also about the smaller MT90-16 tire size on the front, so now that it's time to buy a new front, I am leaning towards getting the Avon, but of course still have the nearly new Metzler on the back. Also, I can't seem to find the Metzler in the MT90-16 size anyway. Also, saw this link which looks like a best price: ($109.60 for MT90B-16) http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=33_61_72 Southwest Moto has MT90HB-16 for $111.95. Are these the same or slightly different tires? Also, I want blackwalls, not whitewalls. And these prices are close enough that if one provides better customer service, then I would go with that one. Thanks for any and all help.
  13. Well, it took about 3000 miles, but the Metzler 880 on the back finally started blowing chunks. It stranded me on m way to work this morning at 6:15 AM in the dark. Thankfully, a police officer equipped me with flares while I waited for AAA to show up and scoop the scoot off the road. The dealer only had the same tire in stock. I was in a bit of a rush and had him put it on. Metzler is referring me back to the place I bought for any warranty adjustment and said the Yamaha dealer should have taken care of it. Mine was made in Germany, not Brazil, so I figured I was to be spared the agony of the defects. Will keep you posted.

    What tires?

I'm new to the forum, but not to my '83 Venture. It's tire time again, but Metzler dropped the ME-88 that gave me such good milage. The Dunlop I have on the rear now got less than 1/3 the milage of the Metzler. What is a good tire for tire milage? I ride one-up, seldom in rain, and am always careful on takeoff and stopping. Metzler ME-88 = a little over 20,000 on the rear. The Dunlop Arrrow Max GT-501 is nearly bald after 6800 miles. Thanks for any replies.
