I got a large ice cream cone that says if he builds it from a picture your vocabulary will significantly increase when you try to mount it up. By that I mean, it ain't gonna fit. Getting the Marks and/or a stock one on and sealed is an adventure. I am fairly certain Marks has a fixture to make these. There are 8 mounting points on one of these that need to be at the right angle, size and location to fit. The Marks is about $320, stainless steel and solid. Down side to it is it doesn't come with gaskets or clamps & the sides need buffed to look similar to chrome. Gary

Then what does the use of Facebook accomplish if it going to be on this site. I have been getting a number of emails from the Venture facebook site. I use computer technology hourly so I am not against the computers, just don't see the bling behind the second venue. Gary

Motor noise on a MKII help needed
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You don't have to remove fairing to put aftermarket one in. The cables can be unplugged from the old one and leave it in place and put new one one top of air box. This is related to the hand size thing we discussed. I might also have a spare side stand switch if you ever want to fix that. Bike is not supposed to crank in gear with side stand down. Gary -
1987 Venture With Transmission Problems
dingy replied to jimc1031's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have a 1300 motor I am rebuilding and it had the rear bevel gear that Micarl mentioned tore up. The bevel gear on the transmission shaft looks OK, which is surprising. This bevel gear has the u-joint on the other side. It can be pulled with motor in the frame after removing rear wheel & swing arm. Any more than this and the motor needs to come out of frame. The thing about having this kind of damage is that there could be other issues that caused this condition. In the case of this motor, one of the bearings on the output tranny shaft had the cage come apart which would have been a far worse problem if not caught in time. Gary -
Excellent tech article by Playboy

Very nice write up. It takes a lot of time and planning to take all the photos to do something like this. Then the formatting and writing the text, and assembling all the pictures in a clear format. Gary -
Motor noise on a MKII help needed
dingy replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think he just changed diaphragms and checked the syncing within last couple of days. So far the one reply that sticks in my mind as being like the sound was what KIC said about the rear heat shield. It seemed to be like a rattle type sound more than an engine or lifter knock. And, the noise seemed to originate from the front of motor when I rode it and when standing by it. The valve train was a little noisier than what I thought normal, but not real bad. The motor was at operating temp when I saw it. Gary -
From what you are describing, it sounds like the reserve lighting unit (RLU) has failed. This device is a Yamaha design that lights the headlight bulb in case one has burnt out. If high beam goes it lights low beam. If low beam fails it lights high beam at a reduced voltage. There is a white indicator on the top of the dash panel that will light up only when you have a failure in the bulb circuit & the RLU is over riding. Linked next is a lengthy write up on relays and possible uses. Towards end of the PDF file there are several ways to wire up a set of auxiliary lights as either passing or driving lamps. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=68952 Below is text of tests I did on an RLU for functioning, did this several years ago. This is what I have found with the operation of a working system on an 1988 wiring setup. I have just verified this information on my bike. I have independent spade lug terminals hooking up to the headlight plug in the wiring harness, due to my projector headlights, so it is easy to simulate burnt out bulb conditions. The reserve lighting unit is located on the right side of the headlight unit. When the dimmer switch is set to LOW and low beam lamp is not functioning, the reserve unit illuminates the high beam lamp at a reduced voltage, this keeps from blinding oncoming traffic. The dash white indicator light "Headlamp" is illuminated. CMU Headlight icon is displayed. When the dimmer switch is set to LOW and High beam lamp is not functioning. The dash white indicator light "Headlamp" is not illuminated. CMU Headlight icon is displayed. When the dimmer switch is set to HIGH and High beam lamp is not functioning, the reserve unit illuminates the low beam lamp at a near normal voltage. The dash white indicator light "Headlamp" is illuminated. CMU Headlight icon is displayed. The "High beam" indicator is lit. When the dimmer switch is set to HIGH and Low beam lamp is not functioning. The dash white indicator light "Headlamp" is not illuminated. CMU Headlight icon is displayed. The "High beam" indicator is lit. When both lights are not functioning, only the CMU icon is displayed when Low beam is selected. When HIGH beam is selected, the dash white indicator light "Headlamp" is illuminated. CMU Headlight icon is displayed. And the "High beam" indicator is lit. Assuming the wiring diagrams are correct, the high and low beam run through the CMU. There is an input circuit and an output circuit for both the high and low beams. The reserve lighting unit is where the input wire from the headlight fuse goes first. I am guessing that the current on this wire is used to determine if the lamps are lit or not. Last paragraphs are based on this assumption. If the Low beam is selected at the dimmer switch, a positive voltage is sent to the CMU, which then passes that voltage back to the headlamp. If headlamp is burning, reserve lighting unit does nothing. It senses normal current on feed wire, and it is getting voltage on its low side input. If the High beam is selected at the dimmer switch, a positive voltage is sent to the CMU, which then passes that voltage back to the headlamp. If headlamp is NOT burning, reserve lighting unit senses very low current on feed wire (some current consumed in CMU), and it is getting voltage on its low side input. The reserve lighting unit then outputs reduced positive voltage on the High beam circuit, thus illuminating High beam and signaling CMU that low beam filimant is burnt out. If the High beam is selected at the dimmer switch, a positive voltage is sent to the CMU, which then passes that voltage back to the headlamp. If headlamp is lit, reserve lighting unit lights the High beam indicator lamp. It senses normal current on feed wire, and it is getting voltage on its high side input. If it is not lit, the reserve lighting unit outputs positive voltage on the low beam circuit, thus illuminating low beam and signaling CMU that high beam filament is burnt out. Gary

Uncledj is having a 'new' noise on his Venture. I can not determine what it is either. It is a somewhat metallic sound in the low end RPM ranges, seems to clear up above 4000 or so when I rode bike. I tried recording a clip of sound on each side with my Iphone, but noise is not very obvious on recording, and the right side clip sounds totally different from left side on recording which is not actual case. He has had complete exhaust system apart with nothing apparent found there. Attached are some pictures of a modified 83~85 muffler. I have been happy with removing the cone and a couple of 1/2" holes in last baffle though. The gutted set were only on my modified bike and they did run OK on it. As mbrood stated though, this much removal of baffles probably would require some carb work on a stock bike. Gary

In general, the consensus here seems to be you don't have to re-jet. The 83~85 had 117.5 mains, then the 86-93's went to 125 mains. Go slow on gutting mufflers, I have a set I pulled all the last baffle out and they are as loud as about any HD, don't use them much. Gary

There are a series of icons in two rows on the left side of the computer screen. Normally these are blank. When key is turned on they cycle through each one as part of a start up check. When flashing light comes on, are any of these icons turned on? If so, which one(s)? Gary

How have you arrived at conclusion it is a trojan, if you have not gotten any video yet? Just trying to understand process here.. For about $1500, I can send you specs on a high powered computer that GAwildcat helped me with about six months ago. It will probably be able to keep up with you. Quad core, 16 gig ram. Nice mid range graphics card. I think it mostly came from tigerdirect. Gary

Tell me someone did not steal your bike. Or are you injured. I know it can't be to lazy to walk out and measure yours !!!! 40 mm I know you sent me a message about the rotor & caliper, but I can't find it. Do you want them both ? Gary

2.5 watts is a very minimal power draw addition. I would think it would most likely be a safe addition. Gary -
83's are horizontal. The bike I have that is titled an 83, but is an early production run 84 model has the vertical lever on it, along with the other 84 changes. Blue color for one. Gary
