  1. Folks, I'm getting emails every day asking if it is possible to join or renew memberships by credit or debit card for those without PayPal accounts. Please note, you do NOT need a PayPal account in order to pay with a credit/debit card or an e-check. If you do not want to use PayPal but DO want to use your credit or debit card, you can simply click on "settings" at the upper right corner of the page, scroll down until you see "Paid Subscriptions" in the left menu. Click on that link. You will then see a page that says "VentureRider Support" with a drop down box on the right side. Click on the arrow on that drop down box and select the only option, 1 year - $12.00. The click the button that says "Order". That will open a new page. Click the button that says "Order Using PayPal". There will be a link on that page to pay using a credit or debit card without a PayPal account. In that case, they are just the credit card processor. That will open another page. From that page, you can login and pay with your PayPal account OR you can select the option that says "Don't have a PayPal Account"? Click "Continue" beside that option and you will get a page where you can use your credit or debit card or e-check without a PayPal account. In this case, I am simply using PayPal as my credit card processor. In the attached image, I have circled the part that I am talking about. Thanks, Don
  2. Recently, I was notified by Paypal that I had to verify my account because I had neared the $5,000 send limit. According to their writings, the verification process is to prove you are who you say you are. In reality, it appears to be a somewhat different ploy. My account was set up using two credit cards I have had for years, not the least of which was American Express. Both of these cards offer high levels of security. They are all I care to use on the internet, ever. The fun part of Paypal's "verification" process is that there are only two ways to get "verifyied" so you can continue to use their system. The first is to provide them with your personal banking information. The other is to apply for their credit card. Being in the accounting profession for 35 years, and owning my own practice for 25 of those years, I sometimes actually take note of things "financial". So, after researching, and trying to contact Paypal, I found no other way to get "verified", even though my own credit cards have already done that, and my Paypal account has had $4,500 pass through it without one glitch, ever. Paypal is quite straight forward about their demands. If you do not give them your banking information or apply for their credit card, your account with them is locked. In other words, no more using Paypal until you succumb to their demands. Now, all of that being said, I see absolutely no reason for why I would or should ever give Paypal or anyone else my banking information for no legitimate reason. That comes up smelling a lot like marginally legal phishing for financial information without cause. Neither do I care to apply for a credit card I do not want, or need. That is just plain old fashioned over the top aggressive marketing in any other language. So, here I am in the initial stages of letting people know that Paypal is conducting business in such a way that they try to force people into giving up personal information or creating a credit card account they may neither want, nor need with the same intent of gathering personal information on their customers without cause. Paypal is nothing special. It is a service type vendor subject to success by treating its customers fairly. This "verification" process clearly verifies that there are many serious reasons to avoid them or to close any existing accounts people may have with them. Paypal claims it is for security reasons. If Hackers can get into the FBI, CIA and most major banks and governments around the world, Paypal is not even worth mentioning. It should be a piece of cake for the hackers to steal whatever they wish from Paypal. Read the fine print and decide for yourself. But, for me, I am going back to direct involvement with selected vendors, thus ceasing doing business with Paypal and EBay. I do not need these two companies at all.
  3. Hi, Is there a way to pay to join this erstwhile group, without using Paypal? I have been looking for two days to find a way to pay with an e-check, bank account, or some other way...but all I can find is how to pay with my Paypal account....which I don't have one of, nor really know if I want one of! a little help for the engineer in Texas??
  4. I got this in my email at work today. I can't use the money so I'm passing it along to any one else who wishes to be a sucker...er rich. According to the email, 276.5 million minus some token amount for orphanages and less privileged children. At least in this one, the grammar and spelling is not so bad. Dear Friend, I hope that you will not expose or betray this trust that I am about to impose on you. I decided to contact you to help me actualize this business for the mutual benefit of both our families. My name is Mr. Sasha Kutah the Auditing and Accounting section manager in a bank, there is one of our customers who have made fixed deposit of sum of ($39.5)million for 7 years and upon maturity; I sent the notification to his address, but no response. After few months, I sent a reminder and finally I discovered from his business partner that he died after a brief illness in his country. We tried everything humanly possible to locate his relatives or family, but all efforts failed. The deposit is still intact with my bank and the interest is being paid into the principal sum at the end of each year. If the fund remains in the account for more months, the fund will be confiscated and transferred into the treasury of the Government as unclaimed funds. This is why I contact you for joining hands with the honesty and truth to ensure that the fund is transferred into your bank account, a bank account anywhere in the world can help the transfer. All that is required of you is to contact my bank with the information I will send you as the business associate of the depositor with this system the fund will be paid into a bank account you will provide to the bank. To be honest with you, this is totally legal and 100% risk free. But the secret must remain between you and me, I can assure you that I have worked with this bank for many years and I know all the secrets and I have carefully mapped out my perfect strategies to handle this operation successfully. The depositor is my close friend before his death that is the main reason why I'm the only one working at the bank here that knows much about the existence of this fund and the secrets and the depositor. We will also use some part of the funds to help the orphanage and less privileged children in the world, while I invest part of my share under your management. Please reply quickly enough to enable me decide how to proceed. I await your response. Mr. Sasha Kutah. P.S. I'll provide the return email address on request.
  5. Last week I received a suspicious email from PayPall saying my security needs updating. Notice the spelling in PayPall. I fordwarded this scam email to PayPal and thought all was well. I never opened the link. Decided to check my emails today and found several notices from PayPal about a new recurring 50 buck withdrawl. Went to my account and found I was hacked. Somehow they got my password and set up an automatic withdrawl. So far my bank account was charged 100 with another 100 pending. PayPal had me update my security info and put a stop on this new account and is going to issue the refund within 7 days. You guys may want to look at your accounts as well. First time I ever had an issue with PayPal and they resolved it swiftly.
  6. I have been getting constant nag screens to add security exception on Thunderbird the last few days. I am on 14.0 seems to be latest I have run Avast & Malware scans, both up to date. I can't send on my Hover.com account, but 2 other accounts on Tbird are working as usual, which seems to point to my Hover domain email account. gary (@) dinges.com Any ideas?? Gary
  7. Six weeks ago I ordered a new toilet on e-bay for our motorhome from T & S RV Parts for $155, and haven't received it. It was paid for from PayPal, using our bank account. I had followed up with several e-mail messages to T & S with no response. I also filed a dispute with e-bay's resolution center and still no results. Today, I called PayPal, which is close here in Omaha, and almost immediately I got an e-mail stating that a full refund has been deposited into my PayPal account. I think that is a terrific jesture and response on the part of Paypal. I've re-ordered from another vendor and also found the same unit for $140. I'm a happy camper now! PayPal has my vote! (About made a nervous wreck out of me though!) Owen.
  8. My wife had a platinum CapitalOne credit card, last year she paid of the balance and called on the same day to tell them to close the account. The woman she talked to, said that that was no problem, got all the security confirmation to close the account and told her to cut up the card and mail it in along with a written request confirming the phone conversation. You know where this is going, don't you? Lo and behold she gets a statement which she obviously ignored because the account is closed, right?! Apparently not, they went ahead and assessed their annual membership fee and then started charges late pay fees. By the thhe time we figure out wat is what, they are claiming she owes almost $150. So she calls and is told the account couldn't be closed because it should be in writing , we already did that I believe, but, i went ahead and wrote a nice letter requesting the account be closed, because she was told that would take care of it, the balance erased and the account would be closed. Wrong!!!!! :doh:We get a letter stating that the account needs to be closed by talking to a representative :confused07::confused07:. So I call Brenda, who is visiting her mother and tell her what they said, she calls them, explains the whole thing for the, what, fifth time and is told accounts can only be closed in writing :bang head::bang head: I think we've been there??? She talked to them again last night and was told she did not notify them to close the account in a timely manner (I guess the day you pay of the balance is not timely enough) and therefore acquired the annual fee, of course they won't close the account with an open balance either. I got three words: WTF?????

    Scam????

I suspect this is a a scam. A guy contacted me via e-mail to buy my 51 merc. He insists on paying via pay pal and wants me to open an account there. He will not tell me where he is and claims he does not have a chequeing account and cannot go to the bank due to the nature of his work (used car dealer) He wants to send the money then have the car picked up. I have offered to deliver it but he refuses. It does not make sense for him to pick it up due to ferry fares and tides. Your opinions?
  11. There are some links to ebay in the "Quickstep has a bike" thread for CB's that only take you to the home page. There was some discussion about this problem awhile ago.... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46616 but it didn't seem as if it ever got resolved. The general concensious was that you COULD NOT BE LOGGED IN TO EBAY on your personal account if you wanted to copy and paste the link to a speciific item. So....whats the REAL story? Is it that the poster was logged in or is it my machine?
  12. Interesting evening yesterday. I was in the hotel last night and decided to check my banking account. I do do that on a regular basis so it must have been some sort of premonition. So, I get paid twice a month via automatic deposit. Yesterday was not a payday but due to some sort of computer glitch, the company did a payroll deposit. They almost immediately caught it and then sent out a deposit reversal to all our banks. No problem right? WRONG. Then my bank made a mistake. They never credited the initial deposit to my account but were kind enough to withdraw the REVERSAL...so....my account was debited the amount of two weeks pay from my balance. It was truly by chance that I even checked the account last night. I contacted the bank and they immediately corrected the mistake and it caused no problems but you REALLY have to watch this stuff.
  13. Apparently some folks have quite a bit of time on their hands. I got an e-mail from the IT guy that runs/maintains one of the servers that I do most of my work on. Apparently 5 of our account passwords have been compromised (that is 5 people with accounts on this system), some files have been accessed and there is some stuff missing. So, apparently my 16 character password that is case sensitive including symbols, numbers, lower case and uppercase letters (and nothing that even resembles a real English word, phone number, address, etc) wasn't quite good enough - or someone just really wanted to get in. Now with that said, I'm pretty sure the joke is on them because most of the stuff in that account is either incomplete data analysis (since this particular experiment is still ongoing) and the rest is stuff that is completed and I either already have it published or it is in the process of being published - so they really have nothing to gain from accessing my junk. Anyways - I'm glad I keep my stuff backed up, so I can restore everything and not think twice about what may have been monkeyed with, but regardless it is still a little bit irritating and confusing. I just don't get some people Okay, I'll shut up and get back to work
  14. I have wanted to open a paypal account, but have avoided doing so because I don't want to give out my bank information. I've decided to open another account and maintain a modest balance in it...my question, is it a checking account required by paypal, or can it be a savings account?
  15. A friend of mine has his Tahoe financed though Wachovia Dealer Services. due to his own fault he has had to deal with the collection department. In October he authorized a draft to get caught up, which they ran on a Friday; then ran another the following Monday. Now it says he has a bounced check (on an unauthorized draft). He offered to let them draft his account to the tune of $250/wk to get caught up, which they refused, he's made three moneygram payments and paid for immediate delivery; none were posted to his account and the last one he made was not posted for a week after they received the money and only because he faxed copies of the money gram. Wachovia bank will not accept payments on the account because they have disassociated themselves from this group. Can't pay online because the account is not listed as current and they won't accept a phone pay either. And the person they say he's supposed to talk to isn't in .......... Bottom line: don't ever finance anything with these guys!!!
  16. Received this E-mail last night. And being soooo scared that I might lose my E-mail access I immediately sent them the information they asked for. 18. Pictures from St. Jude/Mean Dog Memorial Ride. I am having a problem loading the rest of the pics here so I have them posted at Photobucket in the Venturerider account. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/St%20Jude%20Mean%20Dog%202009/
  19. Got hit a couple times w/ some overdraft fees recently and getting tired of it. I tried going through National City customer service and hasn't helped. Seems they are charging me for fees that they shouldn't be because there is money in the account. Seems after they hit me with the fees then I get overdrawn. And I am getting charged $34 a hit. Funny thing is another account of ours got hit once last year and it was $32. Everytime I ask them why the difference, they skirt around the issue. They won't give me a straight answer. Anything to make a buck I suppose. So looking for a new bank. What does your bank charge you (if anything)?
  20. Quick question: Say I purchase a home for $55,000, and I turn around and rent it for $550 per month. Neglecting taxes, insurance, etc, how do I calculate my annual return rate? Is it as simple as (550*12)/55000=12% ? I would appreciate the formula. Trying to figure out what rental rate I would have to charge to achieve a particular interest rate. I know that market conditions determine the rental rate, but I am an engineer, and I like numbers I want to know what rate a savings account would have to be to accomplish the same rate of return.
  21. I just moved all of my Vogel photos to the Venturerider photobucket account. They are at: http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/vogel%202009%20midrsv/ Dennis
  22. Here are a few photos from today. We rode to Helen, some tubed, some shopped, and some continued to ride. We had a good lunch with friends. I couldn't figure out how to upload to the VR Photobucket account so I just created a new one. http://s586.photobucket.com/albums/ss304/midrsv/ Dennis
  23. Got some time to upload some pics from Dons MD........... Enjoy. I will be posting the rest into the photobucket account and will post the link when completed.
  24. OK folks, this was brought to my attention by Cinderella. Many of us use PayPal but they have pretty much been the only player in the market and in my opinion, have continued increasing their fees to the point that it is getting a bit crazy. There is a new online payment processor named "Revolution Money Exchange". It was originally founded by Steve Case. If you join up now, they will pay you $25.00 for doing so. This is not a scam and if you search for "Revolution Money Exchange" you will find a lot of information about it. I just joined up and within minutes they had deposited the $25.00 into my account. So why is it better than PayPal? They charge NO fees for sending or receiving money. Here's another good thing. If you join you will get $25.00. If you join through the link that I am providing, they will also donate $10.00 to my account to be used to support VentureRider. It's a no loose situation. You get $25.00 and you also donate $10.00 to the site and it costs you NOTHING. Check it out. If you don't feel comfortable with it, that is fine but I feel good about it or I can assure you that I would not have signed up. I certainly plan to start trying it on any of my Ebay auction and etc. and to use it as an optional choice here for donations. PayPal will still be available for those who wish to use it. So, check it out if you wish. Please click on and use THIS link to ensure that the $10.00 goes to VentureRider.org FREE to register for an account FREE to add money from your bank account FREE to send money FREE to receive money FREE to request money FREE to transfer money to your bank account
  25. OK....this new Zumo 550 has really complicated my life. It has caused me to have to make more decisions and I'm tired of making decisions. So here is the latest dilemma. I presently have a Sirius radio. I actually have three of them. One in the house, one in my wife's car and one that I move back and forth between the bike and my work car. It makes no sense to me to pay for a fourth subscription to have different ones on the bike and my work car as I only use one of them at a time. I like the idea though of having the GPS, MP3 and Satellite radio in one unit and therefore not having my IPOD, Sirius AND the GPS until all cluttering up my handlebars. I've already found out that even though Sirius and XM are now the same company, they will not let you add an XM subscription to your Sirius account and therefore get it at the reduced rate. So...I would have to get a new XM account to use the XM for the Garmin. Then I would want to cancel the Sirius account for my car/bike but then would not have a unit for my work car. So..after all this...I guess my question is has anybody tried using the Zumo with the XM receiver in a car? Will the antenna pick up the stations if it is on the dash or somewhere in the car? This is ALL so dang confusing.
