  1. two years ago at freebirds maintance day there was a black rsv with diamond cut motor fins, anyone know who that would have been or where one might get that done at thank you steve
  2. The motor mounts for 1st Generations have been delivered to me and I will be shipping them no later than Friday, March 4, 2011. Each of you that have purchased a set have been sent an email to the address shown on your PayPal payment asking for verification of your shipping addresses. Please respond to the email address that sent the request and not to the private email here on the forum. I thank each and everyone of you who made a purchase and contributed to the discussion. If some would like to order at this time I do have "extras". For more information see : http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=55960 Again, Thank you all
  3. I have had my bike down for an electrical problem that I thought was the TCI, but ended up being a terminal coming into the TCI. I also moved the TCI, which I put on the wall beside the radio. I also had my Corbin seat recovered and am still not real happy with it. I took it to someone that was recommended, but he has struggled with this seat, and with the changes I had made to it earlier, it made it worse. The biggest thing was my son Brian had my carbs off and had put them on his bike trying to eliminate some problems he is having. He has been thru his 85 carbs several times and still is not getting the proper fuel feed. But, at least mine is running good and feels good. After running it some, it felt real good to do a couple of 1st and 2nd gear runs up to 8,000rpm's. Now, I am getting a little more motivated to tear into the 30,000 mile motor I got with the 85 and put the 2nd gen Venture transmission in it with the V-max rearend in the bike. I am also going to put the solid motor mounts in I got from SGN (Steve) and do the valve clearance check. I really hate to take the valve covers off as they have had absolutely no leaks around them. It makes me wonder if these valve covers have ever been off the motor. It is supposed tyo be about 70 degrees here today with about a 30% chance of thunderstorms later on. RandyA
  4. Have the motor out of the scooter do do a few enhancements on it and had a problem last night. I was able to get 15 of the 16 head studs out of the block, and literally the last one I went to do would not budge with a double nut setup. Put Red Loctite on nuts and let it cure over night, and still wasn't budging. A little more torque with a pipe wrench and it let go. I was getting concerned. Never used Loctite to disassemble something before. Gary
  5. With the motor cold, on its side stand, what should the Oil level be in the Glass window?
  6. hi folks since i bought my motor tike rsv a couple of weeks ago. i was wondering if anyone else had this trike kit or am i the only one ? i've looked at the hannigan and tri-wing kits. these seam to be the most popular with the rsv bunch. reguards don c.
  7. I just purchased a 4 hour DVD all about rebuilding the 1200/1300 engine. It is based on the VMAX engine but as you know it is the same basic motor. Should anyone want to borrow it I will make it available for shipping costs. Don, maybe you could make this a sticky...
  8. Hello to all. I am in a great need for some help. I live in NC and with the cold weather we have had and me starting a new job I have not had alot of time to ride my bike. I have a 2000 MM and I went out to start it up and I was letting it run since it has been cold. I went out to check on it and noticed a large cloud of smoke coming from underneath the motor and then I looked under the motor and noticed water pouring out of the bottom. I was wondering if anyone on here would have suggestions as to what the problem is. Thank you in advance for the help that I will receive with this issue. Hopefully it will not cost me alot of
  9. While fiddling with my carbs - and with a battery that is getting low, it feels as if my starter motor clutch is giving up. It could be that as the battery is low and the starter motor has always struggled, it's just not gripping tightly enough , so changing the battery and servicing the starter motor just MIGHT sort things out, otherwise I might have to invest in the starter clutch modification. While searching for bits, though I came across this chap on the US ebay site: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Starter-KIT-Yamaha-M-C-XVZ1200-Venture-XVZ-1200-1198cc-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem414ce55e63QQitemZ280462974563QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories He is selling the bits to refurbish the starter motor, but also sells aftermarket starters. He says that all models are available, so I have asked if he can match the later Royal Star starter which I'm told will fit (awaiting an answer) and wondered if anybody had experience of these.
  10. I have read all the posts about the plugs behind the fins. I pulled the fins to check the plugs and found none of them to be leaking. The drip just started as the cold weather set in, It drips just behind the kickstand pivot. The puddle is the size of a silver dollar after 24 hours. This on an '01 RSV 40K on the odo. So if it's not the cylinder plugs what else might it be? I see no seepage around the head gaskets or anywhere on top of the motor. Inspection with a mirror and flashlight of the underside of the motor shows it dripping off the shift rod, but I can't tell where it's coming from. The reserve tank is at the proper level. No overheating problems. My last few rides have been in temps of 25 to 40 degrees. I need to get this fixed before Thursday, as a pgr member we provide the parking guides for the veterans day service at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
  11. I think the starter clutch on my 1st gen is bad, what are the symptons......not engaging all the time, spinning freely when trying to start? Thats what it does, so would repairing the clutch on it be a remedy or should I change the whole thing? I will be doing this when I pull the motor to fix 2nd gear. Sure wish that motor I was given had the starter with it.............but I am extremely lucky to have it, courtesy of Master Guns.............
  12. Noticed yesterday I had some oil on the motor and today started to look for the problem. Looks like it's coming from the long upper crankcase breather cover between the cylinders. The crankcase vent mod has been done but does NOT seem to be coming from filter or connecting hose. In the service manual I cannot tell if there is a gasket or not. I see they are supposed to be tightened to only 7.2 ft lbs. Anyone know if there is a gasket before I mess with it. ALSO. For some reason my oil sight glass is BLACK, can't see through it at all. Just last week it was clear. Oil has not got many miles on it. Is there any way to check oil level on these things without using the sight glass? I looked in some older posts and some said to put Seafoam in crankcase to clean glass. How much do you add and how long do you run motor? I ASSUME it has to be drained fairly soon so it doesn't thin the oil to much. Of course the bike has been running and doing great BUT since I have somewhere to ride this Saturday it just has to act up.
  13. the frames at the sand blaster, and i just fired up the new motor for it. i bought a new 13 hp, 389 cc, overhead valve, electric start motor, from harbor freight. that along with the cvt, comet clutch, should set a cruising speed around 65mph, top speed around 75 mph. i'm using a zx-14 rear disc and caliper for the front brake and the original drum brake in the rear. it should stop good and run with the hardleys uo to 50 mph., with it's low weight of 275 lbs.. getting excited about getting my frame back so i can start machining parts for the drive train and get the motor mounted. i'm also going to 10" polished aluminum wheels with michlein tires to improve the handling. to finish things off i am going to paint it silver and blue clear coat to match my nomad. it will look original except for the wheels, disc brake, and fancy paint job. should be a real sleeper at the cushman meets. for all you folks that had and loved cushmans when you were young , they are still very popular. there are thousands of them around. check out some of the cushman sites. it makes a great hobby. there are alot of meets, and nice people involved in them.
  14. Well Thanks to all who were helping me try to obtain that motor on Ebay, as it turns out it is to much for shipping . I thank you all:ice_thy-vi101212101 you know who you are .. Mike R.. What a great gang we have here. Any motors for sale close to Calgary? 1300 Venture..or Montana/
  15. for all you camper type riders , check this out , http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/08/buffalino-tiniest-rv-ever.php I think it is a Class A motor home on 3 wheels
  16. I have a knock coming from the lower end of the engine, on the right side, in the water pump area. It's usually heard at idle and up to around 1500 rpm. I found some other threads about a similar problem, it has been recommended to sync the carbs, I checked them and they are spot on. I have fresh Rotella synthetic in it with no change. The coolant is full as well. Is it possible that the pump needs rebuilt? The motor has 70k miles. I'm really concerned about the knock, I just bought the bike and don't want to rebuild the motor already. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Briley.
  17. a few of my buddies and I decided to help out another friend and change out his pipes on his street glide for him. We had to ride it over to my buddies garage about 6 miles away. So naturally i got to ride it to the garage to be worked on. Since I havent ever ridden a HD of any kind, here are my first impressions. Bike seems smallish compared to my tour deluxe. I love the narrower tank. I also like the fit and finish. His bike seems to idle a little high, Vibration at idle was there of course, but it didnt really bother me. I really liked the fairing, not used to the hand controls on bars, but of course wouldnt take long. I seemed to feel a little scrunched up in the seat. My feet didnt feel quite as far forward. I like the bar positioning. Feels like the bars come back toward me a little more. The seat rest and pegs are set for a guy 5' 9" and i'm almost 6' 1" so that explains the scrunched in feel. Over all i like the bike. Its a bone stock 96 inch motor, not terribly quick by any means but ok. When I pulled into the garage shut off the bike and sat on it till we got a lift under it. Right away I couldnt believe the amount of HEAT coming from the motor. That i did not like. Would I change to a glide, maybe, but in no hurry.

  19. For anyone that might be interested, there is a 1984 engine available for $199 on eBay. It's only too bad that the shipping costs almost as much as the motor! I have purchased several items from this Seller and he has been great to work with. Highly recommended! http://tinyurl.com/XVZ1200-84-engine Terry
  20. OK, accumulating too much stuff around here. I have two extra motors so I am offering up one almost complete motor off an 86. It is minus the carbs and starter. It is still installed in the frame cradle. So, if anyone would like this motor and is willing to pay shipping, it's yours. When I purchased it a couple years back, according to the fellow down Houston way that sold it to me, it ran when the bike was completely disassembled. It looks awful but it's all there and the covers can be cleaned up and recoated.
  21. A member here is letting me have a 1986 1300 motor, It is located in the Ft. Worth, Tx. area. I was wondering if anyone would be in that area would be making a trip to Houston, time doesnt matter, I can get the motor picked up in the Houston area by my son who is over there on a regular basis. My only other option is to get it shipped, which would be quite expensive and that just isnt in the budget right now........I would also need a place to have it dropped in Houston, hopefully a member local to Houston could help me out in that respect...........I know we have quite a few there, even Cupcake might be able to help.
  22. Wow! I was impressed. 38 MPG for a 27 year old motor with 34K miles! Awesome.
  23. Got my 86 back from the shop today with a new-to-her motor, an 89 that incidently is in perfect condition. All four cylinders test to stock compression and better yet, this is one heck of a quiet running motor. Got her home and assembled all the other stuff and took it on a good long ride. Whoa, I am impressed; runs like new, smooth, lots of power, and clean. Love it. I've heard these motors are bullet proof. Well they aren't. The original motor developed either a piston slap or a wrist pin knock and rather that fix a motor that had well over 100k, even though the PO said 24K, I picked up this one from hessforless. I replaced a motor in an 83 by myself about 3 years back and I'll never take that on again. Anyway, I just wanted to share this great experience with all. Now I again have two great running, great looking sleds in the garage.
  24. I had heard that the motor in the venture was a Harley design that yamaha bought from them when they were going under with AMF. Is this true?
  25. Do the carb manifolds on a second gen have the enternal metal sleeve/liner like those on a first gen?? I just took a look at those on the '99 and they are cracked a bunch. Motor runs good tho.....
