checking, I set up my checking but I never use through paypal,, I set up my credit card as a second source on my account and when ever I buy anything I switch the funding source to my credit card. That way I have the protection guarantee of both Paypal and my credit card on every item. Of course you want your checking account listed to verify your account because it takes away monthly amount limits on the Paypal account and gives you a place to transfer money to if you sell something and the person pays through Paypal..

I understand, but was wonder why it didn't show up when it is put it in "what I ride" box. same as when people put in city, state and country. Custom title, in my logic should be for what I want it to say so I can customize my look. If I had know it was for my bike type I would have done it a long time ago.??

Solo I don't use it,, but two up, right bag is all the riding gear I'm not wearing, tools and a pair of tennis shoes. Left bag is all the riding gear my wife is not wearing, her purse, and a pair of tennis shoes. The trunk is full of my clothes, and the rack bag is full or her clothes and toiletries. So the tank bag gets to hold camera and other things you need to get to at stops. The Manta is a pretty small tank bag, about half the size of a small back pack, and has a shoulder strap. I just carry the tank bag with me when we stop somewhere so I don't have to watch it.

Some reason the what you ride box isn't made to show up in posts?? I mean, state and home country put the correct flag in posts, why not make what you ride show up, maybe even with a pic if available.

Venture 1999 to 2010 differences
hig4s replied to a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Yeah, yeah, I know you are stirring the pot, but the comment strikes a cord for me, seeing as from 99 to 2008 when compared to a comparable Harley the Royal Stars always came up getting better reviews, but now they don't, since Harley made the changes in 09 to their touring line. It seems updates are way over due. -
You assumed a short response was rude. Just because you perceived what was written that way does not mean it was really rude or uncaring. Sure is could have been better, they could have added sorry and thank you, but the words in the response alone carry no malice. Had you gone up to a service counter at a store and asked the same question, and gotten those same words in an apologetic tone of voice with a small timid shrug, you would have been happy, or at least happier. Unless of course you were just looking for an excuse to be unhappy. The fact there is no tonal quality or body language in the written word lends people to assume it, and from my experience, when the words are ambiguous, people assume the writer has the same attitude they personally have at the time they read it. Between the internet, and the county's schools system's lack of funding, and continual dumbing down of curriculum so almost every parent can feel good about their kid being in GIFTED classes, no one has time to learn to actually write anymore, and it doesn't look like reading is doing that well either.

Rebuttal. K&N or any high flow filter will allow more air flow all the time, it will be most noticeable at WOT. The size of the holes in a K&N are larger that is why they flow more air, and that in theory will allow more small dust and dirt particles into the engine. BUT!!!! the K&N is also an oiled filter and the oil traps most small dust and dirt particles. Why do you think virtually every dirtbike and off road racing truck and dune buggy uses oiled filters. And in very dusty conditions use an oiled pre-filter in front of an oiled filter. Of course on off road vehicles they come from the factory with oiled foam filters so no one changes to K&N. The theory behind the K&N oiled filter is as it starts to collect dust and dirt it builds a static charge and then collects more dust and dirt, and that is why they tell you not to clean them too often. Not sure if that theory is true or not but I have changed to K&N filters on every vehicle I have had that started with a factory paper filter for many, many years and never had an issue or wore an engine out early. I have not changed on my 07 RSV yet, mainly because I got sick last spring and have not ridden much in the last year, but will as soon as I get a round tuit. As far as being expensive, buying K&N and cleaning every 20k to 40k is cheaper than buying new paper filters every 8k, isn't it?

I just use the same Joe Rocket Manta I used on my sport bike. http://www.newenough.com/parts/luggage/tank_bags/joe_rocket/manta_magnetic_motorcycle_tank_bag.html

Debating new pipes, need opinions...
hig4s replied to Mooseduncan's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Ventures are 4s, twins will always have a bit more low end, and unless you have a Sportster, the engine is at least 1600cc, bigger engine gets more torque, and the Royal Stars engine hit peak HP right near the rev limiter (actually it may be after the rev limiter). You are never going to get the low end you have on the Harley. But to optimize, if you like your current pipes sound, take it to a shop and get it dyno'd and re-jetted. Back in 06 when tested against a Road King the Royal Star HP was 76.8 @ 6000 rpm (pre 99 carb change I believe it was about 67hp) Road King was 62.6 @ 5400 rpm. Torque was 74.1 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm and RK was 66.9 lb-ft @ 3800 rpm. But back at 2500 rpm the RK already had 65 lb-ft, while the RS had about 62 lb-ft. (and of course the pre 99 RS was probably a little less) In other words, the RS needs to be up over 3000 rpm before you are in the power. -
On trips I wear a full two piece armored textile Tour-master suit, (around town I still wear the jacket), armored sport bike gloves and a Full face helmet. But I to switched to touring boots as my sport-bike/racing boots just weren't comfortable when sitting back. I occasionally see others in similar attire. So if you are worried you will be the only one that is wear real protection on a cruiser, don't be. But I'm not sure if the cut of road race leathers will be comfortable on a cruiser. Don't they sort of force you to lean forward?

I don't know, but my guess would be back in the early 1900s people who rode motorcycles just wore the same clothes they would have wore when riding a horse.

If you are going solo a Yamaha V-star 650 Silverado will suffice, and the V-star 950 Tourer is more than sufficient. Both feel more comfortable to me than the VTX, and both get better gas mileage. Although if I was riding solo I might get a RSTD and replace the passenger seat with a luggage rack. Or maybe a BMW GS,, or a Guzzi Breva 1200, or a Harley Crossbones, or . . . .
-
Are these valve springs really that soft? The original V-Max engine these engines are derived made peak HP at 8500 RPMs, not sure what the redline was. The new 1700 V-Max redlines at 9500.

We have a local shop here called Leather Lady,, they have good chaps for $99, tailored. I very seldom wear chaps, but Mary and I each have a pair for the occasions when going a short distance but it is a little chilly out. Going longer distances we both have full riding pants.

I'm not a fan of green on a bike either, but still a great paint job..

I was originally looking at the Yamaha FJR1300 and the wife said if I got something comfortable for her she would do trips with me. So I started looking at the Honda ST1300 as it seemed roomier, but she asked if I was kidding. So we started looking at full dress bikes. We sat on an Ultra Classic and she complained the passenger area was too cramped. She actually thought the BMW had the most comfortable passenger ergonomics, but thought both the Wing and RSV were close and plenty comfortable. I thought the RSV was the most comfortable.
-
6 cylinders vs 4,, sure it's smoother... Faster,, the RSV is de-tuned from the V-max so that can be corrected. Less top heavy,, hmm, a lot of the top heavy feel is from the extra large Brickstone front tire on the Royal Stars.. I switched from it to a 130 front and the bike handles so much better.. Even so, I road the 1800 and 1500 wings, thought the 1500 was about the same as the RSV at parking lot speeds and the 1800 felt heavier than my RSV at parking lot speeds even before I changed the tire.. Never road the Valk, not sure how much different that feels from the 1500 Wing. None of the Hondas had the leg room I have on the RSV.. And anyway, back to the subject of the thread, when I bought my RSV I test road tons of bikes, the only three I road more than once were the 1800 Wing, the BMW 1200LT, and the RSV, we all know what I picked.. But I did love the engine on the V-Rod and had they made a full dress V-Rod with comfortable ergonomics I might have gone there.

Too much whine:?
hig4s replied to GOINtoHELL's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Not sure why heavier oil would be noisier, I thought it should be the other way around, but have heard a few people say when they change to 20w-50 from 10w-40 it got louder. when I switched from dino to Mobil 1 10w_40 mine got quieter. -
I have found CRC 3-36 is much better than the 2-26.

Regular maintenance?
hig4s replied to homer's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
What is really strange is, after looking at several Royal Star manuals, all say oil filter every 8000 miles, but some say oil every 8000, some say every 4000???? I do every 8000 but I use synthetic oil.- 11 replies

hig4s replied to GOINtoHELL's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Mobil 1 20w-50 is specifically designed for air cooled twins, which have greater machining tolerances and run considerably hotter than a liquid cooled four. It is suppose to keep its viscosity to over 300 degrees. Not sure why so many people are using it. Also there have been several posts where people have gone to heavier oil and said it made the noise worse whether it was synthetic oil or not. And the manual calls for 10W-30 oil as first choice, 20W-40 as second. 10W-30 shouldn't be used in air temps over 100, and 20w-40 shouldn't be used in temps under 40. -
2008 Venture performance
hig4s replied to a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
These engines are a version of the original V-max engine,, which produced peak HP at 8500 rpms and would pull to 10000rpms, if the 8000rpm rev-limiter was disconnected. Now all years of Royal Stars are tuned milder, and I an not sure they will pull even to 8500, but I don't doubt they have no problem charging past the 5600rpms of the rev limiter if you disconnect it. I believe with the rev-limiter still connected top speed is about 90 on the speedo, probably 96 or 97 actually. I really never ride that fast anymore, and if I did the Venture would not be my bike of choice.. I would get an FJR. -
